Chapter 41 - I Love Mondays
I never thought I'd see the day that I'd live for a Monday. I was so excited to see Brynn again. I nearly bounced out of bed. Even though I did get into trouble when I got home it turns out that the blow was softened by a phone call made by Grandma Rose. I love that woman.
I lost phone privileges for the week, but did get Brynn's text that she was home safe. I wasn't allowed to go out with Brynn this weekend but as this week is her Dad's week to see her there was no real loss there. And yeah, I can't talk to her on the phone but I'll see her in school everyday. So, it was hard to feel down when I am feeling so up.
My mom gave me a lift into school again. Not wanting me to keep using the foot as I was out all day yesterday and it swelled some from use. She let me out in front of school and reminded me to get a key for the elevator to get around today. I promised I would and leapt out of the car.
I hobbled my way to the courtyard and there she was sitting under her tree. She appeared to be drawing and as I approached she stopped, closed her book and smiled up at me.
"I was just thinking of you," she said, and I join her on the ground.
"Really? What were you think of... how adorable I am? How much fun we had together? Kissing me?" I say leaning in.
She pushes my face away and I see she's turned it towards something she was holding in her hand. "No, I was thinking... I need to give you back your wallet. It was still in the backseat when I got out of the car last night."
"Oh," I say, disappointed that was all there was to it. "Thanks!" I say taking it from her and sliding it into my back pocket. "So, what are you working on?" I ask her.
She suddenly gets secretive and holds the drawing pad against her chest. "Nothing important. Just doodling."
"Can I see?"
She looks really uncertain. Like I just asked to take a peak in her diary or something.
"Umm...?" She looks down at the book in her hand and then suddenly the bell rings for school to begin. She looks relieved. "Perhaps another time." She beams at me and offers me a hand up after jumping up easily and brushing the grass and dirt from her skirt.
I take it but before she can pull her hand away I pull her towards me and give her a quick kiss. "Walk you to class?"
"I believe our first class of the day are in different directions but I'll see during homeroom, if you can make it down to the yearbook office?"
"Deal," I take her hand and we walk in together. Brynn seemed happy but nervous for some reason.
"Is everything okay? Did you get into trouble with Gran?"
Brynn was looking around at people as we walked into the building. "No," she said although a bit distractedly. "She just said to make sure I didn't do it again. You?"
I had her full attention now. "No phone for 1 week and I can't see you this weekend."
"Well that's good because I can't see you either," she laughed.
"Yeah, I knew that but I wasn't about to clue the rents on that little detail."
"You rebel!" Brynn laughs and pushes my arm, which nearly pushes me off balance but she straightened me out pretty quick.
"It is a shame," she said, "about the phone privileges. I was hoping you'd be around to rescue me from the endless boredom of being with my Dad this weekend."
"Ah, I already thought about that. You got a laptop right?"
"Sure, have too with school. Why?"
I hand her an origami heart shaped note. "My email is written in there. We can IM each other or email if you can't instant message me."
"You think of everything," she says tucking the note into her bag.
"Well I am a planner," I tease, I reached my locker and since hers was upstairs near the library we had to say good-bye. She gave me a quick peck on the cheek and disappeared up the stairs.
I am starting to love Mondays. I can't stop smiling, thinking of an eternity of Mondays spent with Brynn.
"Guess you had a good weekend," Tyler says as he approached.
"How can you tell?" I asked shoving my books into my bag and closing my locker.
We start off for English class together.
"You've got that moony look on your face," he informs me.
"Do I?" I say but can't stop grinning. "Well I got all good news. My foot is healing. I'm right on target and Brynn came home early from her Dad's and so we got to spend the whole day together yesterday."
"Yep, that would explain it. I had a good weekend too. Thanks for asking."
"So you and Sierra got some quality time in?"
"Yeah."
"Now, who looks dreamy?" I taunt. He punches my arm.
"Guess we're two fools in love," he says and we take our seats in class.
We get our tests back on the Shakespearean Sonnets. I got a B – and could care less.
We were tasked with writing a Love Sonnet of our own and I smiled. Oh, I was so going to nail this assignment.
Homeroom came and I performed my tasks in the activities office and let them know I was needed in Yearbook, which technically wasn't a lie. I used my elevator key to get down to the cafeteria.
She was waiting by the door. "Thanks for the note," she said, "it was very sweet."
"Well I just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed yesterday. You're contagious Brynn and I'm praying there's no cure."
"Not sure if I should be flattered but I guess it's not everyday a girl gets compared to an incurable disease." She laughs.
Okay, maybe I'm not a smooth talker, but my heart was in the right place.
"So any interest in hiding out in our secret spot," I ask her.
She was about to reply but then quickly moves away from me. The two girls I had seen in the office the last time I checked for Brynn walked up.
"Finn, so glad you're here," the bubbly sophomore says taking my hand and pulling me towards the office door. I look regretful back to Brynn who wasn't looking at me but instead fell behind the second girl as we all entered the office.
"I have the pages I need you to look over right here," she said rummaging through a mountain of papers, clippings and photographs. "Jean, where did you put the pages?"
"Me? I didn't do anything with them. I gave them to you?"
"I know you did, but..." the first girl said in a huff. She still held onto my hand.
Crystal... her name was Crystal...
"Crystal, calm down. I'm sure they're here somewhere," I say taking my hand back and helping her search. The four of us searched the entire office but nothing was turning up.
"Where are they?" Crystal said, stomping her foot on the ground. "This is your fault!"
I looked up from my search to see her pointing an angry finger at Brynn. "Whoa, whoa, whoa... a second ago you were blaming Jean and now it's somehow Brynn's fault?"
"Of course you'd defend HER," Crystal said her eyes narrowing in on Brynn. I expected laser beams to come shooting out and Brynn to burst into flames. Instinctively, I stood in front of her.
"Crystal, what are you talking about? Why would Brynn take the pages?"
I couldn't help but wonder why Brynn wasn't saying anything. Why she was letting this sophomore make such outlandish accusations.
"She use to be one of us... people wouldn't bother us because you were the editor but now that she's your girlfriend, I'm guessing all bets are off, and someone took the pages to teach her a lesson."
"That's the dumbest thing..."
"No, she's right." Brynn said to my amazement.
I turned to look at her. "What are you talking about?"
Brynn just shook her head. "I was afraid something like this was going to happen. I thought it may take awhile and wasn't sure when they'd act out but..."
"Is anyone going to explain this to me?" I said in frustration with the lot of them.
It was Jean who spoke up... "High School is like a cast system..."
"Yeah," Crystal butted in, "an she is untouchable who's trying to pass herself off as one of the upper classes." She turned her back on Brynn and walked to the office door.
"You of all people should know better," Crystal said slamming the door behind her as she stormed out of the office.
Jean wore a sorrowful expression, placed a hand on Brynn's arm saying, "Sorry, Brynn. I'll go see if I can calm her down."
Brynn turned her back on me and leaned on one of the tables just shaking her head.
"I'm afraid I still don't follow?" I said coming around so I can see Brynn's face.
Brynn rolled her eyes, I'm guessing at my obvious obtuseness.
"You're popular. I'm not. Those lines in the high school world are not to be crossed. When they are it's like crossing proton streams... bad things happen."
I still couldn't believe what I'm hearing. "So, you believe that because you're dating me that someone broke into the yearbook office and stole pages from our senior yearbook?"
"Yep."
"Why are you so certain?"
"Because when I got to my locker this morning. I found this," she dug in her school bag and pulled out a note. A note made with cut out letters, no hand writing that said, "So, you think you can play our game?"
So much for loving Monday's.
"We have to tell someone about this?" I tell her.
Brynn shoves the note back in her bag. "It's nothing."
"How can you say that Brynn. Someone is threatening you, I'm not going to stand by and..."
She put her fingers to my lips to silence me... "That's exactly what you are going to do Finn Nash. If you want to continue to walk on our side of the world, you're going to have to do things differently."
I sigh. And I'm back to cryptic Brynn. "Explain, please..."
But she didn't get the chance because Crystal returned and surprisingly apologized to Brynn. "Jean's right, I shouldn't have went off like that. I was just frustrated. That was weeks of work."
"I know," Brynn says and she looks a bit at a loss.
"Can we redo them?" I interject.
"Well, yeah but it won't be easy. All the photos will have to be reprinted and the copy..."
Jean took a seat at the computer and suddenly smiled, "All still here. Whoever it was couldn't get past our passwords to delete the files. Although, it looked like they tried."
"Good," I said. "Brynn, how quickly can you get the photos printed?"
"If we print out the pages and I know what I'm looking for... a day I imagine."
"Okay, you girls print out the pages and give them to Brynn. Brynn then can reprint the photos and give them to me along with the pages and I'll take care of the rest. In the meantime, I'll make it clear to the rest of the team that passwords must be maintained and the door is to be locked whenever someone leaves the office empty. We'll start a log and sign in and out with times listed so if something like this occurs again, we can pinpoint when and then possibly who, is at fault."
Crystal and Jean smile at one another. "Sounds like a plan."
"I'll take the Master Copy home with me." I say picking it up and placing it my bag. "This way as the pages get completed I'll have the only copy that matters."
Everyone looked happy in the room... that was everyone but Brynn. The bell rings and I walk her to her art class. Keeping one on eye out for Adam for with my booted foot it's too easy for him to knock me off balance when he shoulders me and I don't like giving him that advantage.
Brynn is awfully quite and it's beginning to get to me. I stop her short of entering the room and pull her back. "You okay?"
"I am. Nothing more then I'm already use to. You?"
"Me?" The the thought hadn't occurred to me that she'd be worried about me. Why would she...
"That's what I thought." She said looking rather sad and I realize she mistook my frown as an answer to her question. She turns to walk away from me but I stop her again. "Brynn, they could burn the yearbook in effigy to spite me I don't care. So long as in the end I have you."
She still looked sad but she tried to smile at me and then walked into class. Adam it turns out was already in there giving me a death glare. I had the immature impulse to give him the finger but refrained. Somehow I need to prove to Brynn that nothing else matters. They can do their worst and I'll still be here. That I won't walk away.
Well except for right now as if I don't get my butt in gear I'm going to miss my next class.
