*Shadow's POV*
"I'm sorry, Shadow. Why don't you just tell Sonic to meet you here?" Vanilla said as she walked to the front door. I grabbed the coffee and handed it to her since she almost forgot it.
"I will." I nodded at her. As much as I didn't want that guy in this house or knowing anything about my life more than he knew from school. The project was due on Tuesday, and Faker had already told me he had stuff to do on Monday. We had to finish the project today.
"Thank you, Shadow. I will be back as soon as I can." She gave me a warm, soft smile like she always did then left.
"Can we play?" I turned to look at Cream, who was still in her pajamas.
I spent the morning trying to explain to Cream that one of my classmates was going to come over and for her to try and not say anything to him, I was hoping she would listen. But Cream was too nice to everyone.
*Sonic's POV*
"Hey, Shadz." I walked in, greeting him as I carried my backpack. "Nice house." He didn't seem as angry or annoyed as he looked like the day before, even after calling him the nickname he hated so much.
"Hello!" My ears perked up, and I looked down when I was suddenly hugged. A rabbit, who looked so much like Ms. Vanilla was holding me, giggling and smiling brightly.
"Uh. Hi!" I smiled and crouched down. "Nice to meet you. What's your name?"
"My names Cream! You must be Mister Sonic! I am Shadows' little sister." My ear twitched a couple of times at hearing that. I looked up to see Shadow with his arms crossed and glaring at me. His expression quickly changed and softened when Cream turned around to face him. "I'm hungry. Can I make pancakes?"
"It's 1 in the afternoon, and you just ate." Shadow talked, calmer than I've heard him talk before. Something tells me I am not leaving this house alive. "Grab some snacks and go to your room. We can make pancakes later."
"Okay!" Cream ran to the kitchen, grabbed a bag of chips bigger than someone her age should eat and left running.
"Sister?" I asked Shadow once Cream had gone inside her room and closed the door.
"A word about any of this, and you're dead." Shadow instantly threatened me. I raised my hands in response as I stood up correctly and walked to the table, glancing around a few times, which seemed to anger Shadow. Especially when I spotted a picture of Cream standing beside Ms. Vanilla. Just the two of them alone.
"I won't say a word." I said calmly. "So you're adopted?" I asked.
"That's none of your business." He sat down, grabbing his stuff and placing it on the table. "Are you done with your part?"
"Not yet." I answered, Shadow grabbed a laptop and turned it on. We had to start working on putting all our research on a presentation now. "You can start putting in your part. But I needed help finding this."
"What?" Shadow leaned closer to see what I was pointing at. His ear touched my muzzle from how close we were to the other. Somehow, my mind went back to the day I was asked who I was into. Could I change my answer now?
Shadow and I worked on our project for a little less than an hour before Cream ran out of her room laughing. "Are you two thirsty?" She asked politely.
"Sure." I smiled at her, seeing how Shadow was trying to concentrate on the work but was also trying to be nice to Cream yet hide he was being soft with her from me. "Let me help you." I stood up, pushing the journal closer to Shadow so he could continue.
I walked with Cream to the kitchen, helping her grab some cups and watched as she poured orange juice on the cups. She was craving orange juice, so I went along with her. Before she finished pouring the last cup, she accidentally spilled some on my shirt, making me tense up and shiver from the cold liquid now touching my torso.
"I'm sorry!" She apologized and quickly grabbed napkins. I heard as the chair moved, and Shadow walked to us. I looked up as I tried to clean up the mess on my shirt.
"It's okay, Cream. Here." Shadow grabbed some towels and gave it to her for her to pick up the spill from the floor, then he grabbed my wrist.
I gasped when he tugged on my arm and took me to his room. He let go once we were inside, and he walked to his closet. A few seconds later, a new shirt was thrown at my face. My ears perked up, and I took off my shirt without realizing Shadow was about to walk out of the room. He tensed up and quickly shut the door with him still inside.
"Could have waited for me to walk out." He rolled his eyes as I put on the shirt.
"It's just changing shirts." I chuckled and shrugged. "Thank you." I said while looking at him. He walked closer and grabbed my shirt out of my hands.
"I'll wash this for you and return it later." He said calmly. He was acting very different here than when we were at school or at the park.
"Thank you. But you don't have to do that." I smiled and glanced around. His room was pretty normal size. He had a queen size bed, black bed sheet covers and red pillows. Matching his own style but his room was a cream color matching the rest of the house. He had a big dresser sitting a TV and an office desk on the corner of the room where he had a computer and a lot of school supplies there. There was also a bookshelf filled with books, but my attention landed on a single picture frame sitting on top of his nightstand. He stood beside a young girl.
"Who's that?" I asked as I reached for the picture, but Shadow growled and turned the picture before I could get closer.
"No one." His glare was worse than the ones he usually gave me. Yet he also looked hurt.
"I was just -" I reached closer, but Shadow pushed me away. I gasped and grabbed to his shirt, causing him to fall beside me on the bed. His hand on my chest as he pushed himself up, but when he did so, he bumped into the nightstand, causing the picture to fall.
My ears quickly perked up, and I acted without thinking. I pushed Shadow out of the way and caught the picture before it hit the ground, sighing in relief once I saw it didn't break. Somehow, I knew this picture meant a lot to him.
"Here. I'm sorry." I handed it back to him. "Why don't we go back to finish our project?" I gave him a soft smile, I wouldn't force him to tell me anything. I could tell Shadow was a lot more broken than I originally thought.
