Chapter 25 | Hayden
We spent the rest of the morning goofing off together and eating delicious food that Asher's Nonna made us. And, honestly? It was a pretty fantastic time and I'm itching to spend more of it with the two of them.
When Cameron came up with the idea to stop at home really quickly and grab some more overnight essentials so that we could have sleepover round two, it really was a no brainer. I needed more of them and it was clear none of us wanted to end this high we were on.
"Just let me do it one time." Cameron pleads as he drives us down our road.
"No fucking way." I laugh, biting my thumbnail and looking in the side mirror of the passenger seat at Asher.
Asher's laughing away in the backseat, clearly enjoying this. "You're missing out, Hayd. It feels so good." He adds.
"See? I told you! You've got to try it at least once." Cameron exclaims beside me.
I quirk my eyebrow up and look over at him. "You're speaking like you know from experience."
Cameron immediately goes silent. I see a faint blush of pink creep up his neck. I hold back a laugh. Has my baby brother been taking it up the ass?
Wait, by who?
I immediately feel a shockwave of jealousy rip through me. I whip my head back to Asher. His eyebrows raise as he shoots his hands up in surrender. "Hey, don't look at me. He would've told me if him and Lex did it so...I think this was all him."
"Hey! We're not talking about me. And anyways, there's nothing wrong with exploring your own body and enjoying what you find. We have a male g-spot for a reason." He practically shouts.
I can't hold back any longer and soon we're all bursting out into laughter.
Cameron pulls into our driveway and slowly pulls to a stop once we see Mom and Dad's car parked out front. I sigh, feeling my clenched jaw already. Almost forgot about them.
"Who's car is that?" Asher says, pointing to the right of us. I turn my head to see a black Cadillac parked behind our parents garage.
"I don't know." Cameron and I say at the same time.
We all exchange looks before heading out of the car and into the house.
Immediately upon entering the house, we can hear our parents obnoxious chatter.
"That's amazing to hear. I saw a post about it in the hospital newsletter—looked impressive. And speaking of stress, are you still finding time for those weekend hikes you used to rave about?" An unfamiliar voice sounds through the hallway. We all slip off our shoes in the entry way and continue inside.
"I wish! It's been mostly catch-up on paperwork these days. But I did manage to squeeze in a short trail walk last weekend. How about you? Still hitting the tennis courts?" My mother's voice responds.
"Oh, absolutely. Keeps me sane. Although, I can't say I'm winning any matches lately. My son has started playing too, and it's humbling to see a 10-year-old out-serve you."
Dad laughs, "They're faster than us now, Patel. That's the circle of life. We just need to outsmart them."
We round the corner and walk into the living room. It's the only way to get to the staircase so there's really no avoiding it. Sadly.
"Oh! Cameron, darling! I'm so happy you're here." Mother's voice chimes as she skips over to us. I roll my eyes and begin to head up the staircase when Cameron's hand wraps around my wrist, silently begging me to stay. I feel Asher approach behind me too, pressed into my side.
"Come. We want you to meet Dr. Patel. We've been waiting for you." Mom grabs Camerons other hand and tugs him down towards her. "You remember us telling you about him. The one with the internship your father has been working on getting you a spot in." She whispers close enough to his ear.
I tug my hand away and march up the staircase.
"Hayd, wait up." Asher says, running up behind me.
I hear mom continuing to speak. "Don't worry about him. This is important." She says, wrapping her arm around Camerons shoulder and pulling him towards the living room.
I storm into my bedroom and attempt at slamming the door before Asher knocks his foot in, stopping the blow.
"Hey, come on. It's just a chat." He says, coming in after me and closing the door behind him.
I plop down in my desk chair and rake my fingers through my hair.
"You don't get it. They're doing this on purpose." I bite.
"What? Explain it to me." He says walking up to me. He crouches down by my feet and places his hands on my thighs to keep himself steady.
I lean back in my chair and look down at him. "The internship is in California. They're literally doing whatever they can to get him away from me." I shake my head.
"What the fuck?..." Asher breathes. "They can't do that. Cameron would never go for that."
"He should." I huff. "It's a good as fuck opportunity. He'd be dumb not to."
"Cam's going to do what he wants to do." Asher mutters. He runs his hands up my thighs until he wraps his arms around my waist, holding me tightly with his head against my stomach. "Have a little faith in him."
I tense at the affection. Only Cameron really holds me like this. But, looking down at how precious Asher is...how much he's trying to comfort me...he really wants to be there for me. He always has done this. Watching in the background to find a way to squeeze into my comfort zone.
I swallow harshly and run my hands along his back. Feeling him relax under my touch.
"You're right. I'm sorry, I–I trust that he'll make the right decision." I say, rubbing his back softly.
He looks up at me with his dark green eyes and I can see he's worried too. How can we lose this? We just got it.
All of a sudden, my bedroom door swings open.
"Cameron, you're not listening." My mother says, running after Cameron who trudges in my room.
Note to self: Get a lock on my door.
"I can't believe you. How could you put me in that situation?"
"Hey, how about you both take this conversation outside." Asher says standing up.
"No, I'm not leaving you two." Cameron shakes his head.
"This is the problem, Asher. Don't you see it? You've grown to close to Hayden. He's bringing you down and messing with your brain." She whines.
I can't believe my fucking ears. This is my fault, somehow?
"That's not true. I can see clearly now for the first time and I can see that I haven't had any decision in what I've been doing my whole life!" Cameron yells.
"Cameron, keep your voice down. Your father is doing some serious damage control for you right now." She hushes him.
"No, I don't care. Don't you realize that? I don't even want to be a cardiologist!" He yells.
The whole room goes quiet.
What? Even that surprises me.
"Cameron...you don't mean that. Why don't you come back downstairs and–"
"And what, mom? Continue living a lie to try and fail at hitting yours and Dad's crazy high expectations?" Cameron huffs. "I don't want to do that anymore. I'm done."
Moms eyes go red. She looks over at me and I see her fists clench at her sides. "This is your fault. If you didn't get into his brain–" Cameron steps into her line of sight.
"Don't you dare blame this on him. I can make my own decisions. I can earn my own money and I can create my own path. I believe in myself even if you don't believe in me." He says, his back standing tall.
"Cameron...you don't know what you're saying. Your father will never go for this. He won't support you."
"That's fine. I can do it. I should've been doing it a long time ago." He exhales.
Her eyes look furiously at me and Asher before returning them back to Cameron's. "We're not done with this conversation." She points her finger at Cameron's face before exiting the room.
He shuts the door behind her and lays his hand on the door for a moment.
"Woah. That was...intense." Asher breathes, breaking the silence.
"You don't want to be a cardiologist?" I ask.
Cameron tilts his head from the door towards us. Staring me right in the eyes, his shoulders slump. "Dude...I think I want to be a veterinarian." He says softly.
Silence.
We all break into laughter. "You're so random." I sigh, shaking my head. "Yeah...I've got to get out of here." I say, looking at my desk. I've always known this time would come.
"Well, let's get moving." Asher claps his hands. "We'll start checking out the houses we've got printed out and go from there."
He walks over to my desk and starts flipping through the sheets of paper in search for the documents we had handed to Cameron when we were pleading for him back.
My mouth quirks at the reminder of it all. So much has happened since then.
"Sounds great. The faster we can get out of here, the better." Cameron says, walking over to join us.
I lift my head and look back at him. "So, you're coming? No internship?" I ask.
Cameron looks at me like I'm crazy. "Did you not just witness what went down? No. I'm staying. We're sticking to the plan, I'm just changing it up a little bit." He shrugs. "Ou, let's check that one out first. It's got a backyard for Roscoe." He winks at Asher who smiles back at him.
"And how are you planning on paying your share?" I ask, nudging him in the shoulder.
"I thought my sugar daddies would pay for me." He grins.
"Yeah, no way. I can only pay for my share on my wages that I get from the pizza shop." Asher folds his arms over his chest.
"I'm joking. I'm joking." Cameron laughs. "I think I'm going to start serving throughout school. Pays well and the hours are flexible enough." He shrugs.
I look at his face. "I can see it. You're charming enough." I say.
Cameron gasps dramatically, laying his hand over his heart. I roll my eyes.
"Big brother, did you just compliment me?" He laughs, poking me in my side.
I wince. "And I take it back. Nice going."
He laughs, pulling me in, burying his face into my neck. I sigh, wrapping my arm around his back.
"You'll have to bring your guitars with you. I want to hear you playing all the time." Asher adds, wrapping his arms around my waist too. He leans his head on my shoulder and the pressure of both of their bodies feels so soothing.
I can't help but admit that these two are the cuddliest humans I've ever met and I fucking adore it. I think I breathe better or something when they touch me. It's like I'm constantly floating but when they put their hands on me, I feel like they pull me back down to earth.
"I love you." Asher breathes into my chest.
I feel my heart speed up. Did he just say that to me or Cameron? Both of us? Does he mean love or love love or love love love?
Cameron lifts his head off of my neck and looks over at Asher with a huge smile.
"Aw, did you just tell us you love us for the first time? Say it again." Cameron laughs.
"Shut up." Asher says, turning his head away from Cameron.
I pick up my hand and tilt his head up by his chin, forcing Asher to look into my eyes.
We share a couple of seconds truly looking at each other. Does he mean what he said?
"Say it again." I order, in a hushed voice.
"I–I love you so fucking much. I always have, Hayd." Asher breathes, his eyebrows pinch together as though he's terrified of what I'll say next.
I bite my lip ring, searching for the truth in his words. I think he actually means it. The way he constantly watches me. The way he searches for me in every room. The way he melts into me every time I touch him. I can feel it every moment that passes. He loves me. There's no doubt.
I think...I'm safe here. As long as I'm with them, I'm safe.
"I love you too." I breathe.
I see him physically exhale, as though he was holding his breath that whole time, awaiting my answer. He wraps his arm around my shoulders and I press my lips to his. This is a different kiss than we've ever had. Softer, sweeter and it feels like it means more in a way.
When this all started, I wasn't sure if it was more than just hooking up. Fast forward, I know it's so much more than that.
We break a part to look at Cameron who's standing there smiling at us both.
"I know you two love me, but watching this was nice." He smiles, nodding his head.
I lean in and kiss him gently too before him and Asher start kissing on their own.
The truth is, I think I love Cameron in a different way then he's meaning. I love him deeper than I'm supposed to love my twin brother. I know it's wrong but...there's no changing it now. I'm stuck and there's no denying it.
I hold them both closely as they devour each other tenderly.
How I'm ever going to get tired of this? I'll never know.
