'I've had all of you ,most of you, some of you now none of you.'

***

NEW York City was a beautiful place to be. One foot in the city and you experience an instantaneous gravitational pull. The area was adorned with bright lights that seemed to never die out, it was truly the city that never sleeps.

The clock had just about reached ten p.m. , yet the streets were bustling,
the noise of engines and cars honking as they rushed off to God knows where at this hour of the night.

Queens was usually a busy area so it didn't come as a surprise that Ralph's Cafe was this busy so late. Customers rushed in to grab their beverages and meals before sitting down to enjoy their food or walking back out into the cold air, exiting the warm space to be met with the chilly January air.

My head turned slightly to be met with a loving couple cuddled up next to each other enjoying a slice of heavenly chocolate cake between the two, stopping ever so often to smile at one another. I rolled my eyes at the sight, slightly yearning to receive that type of love, all I ever encountered were brainless boys with a penis where their personality should have been, I was yet to come across an actual man that wasn't time-wasting.

Sighing, I stood up and left money to cover the bill and a tip before slipping my arms through my warm coat and walking out the aroma filled café and onto the side path, where I continued straight down, the illuminating lights guiding me to my apartment which was roughly ten minutes away.

The cold air nipped at my skin as I maneuvered through the streets smiling at the thought of cuddling my warm sheets.

Tomorrow would be my first day back at Rikers, I had been let off from the prison for a mere two days to sort out some legal documents for my apartment.

I wouldn't say I hated being a nurse there, but there were definitely better things to do with my qualifications. I had to do this though, I couldn't risk another person ending up like him .

I let the thoughts escape my head before climbing up the stairs and into the apartment complex I had been residing in for the past two years.

Initially I hadn't planned on finding my own place at 24, but life chose a different path for me to follow and I couldn't really complain, I enjoyed my roommates presence despite her being rather crude and straight forward. I called her unique. Plus she was my closest friend and the only person I usually interacted with.

The keys jingled in my hand as I fumbled with them in an attempt to open the door, entering to allow the smell of pizza to waft through my nose, definitely not home cooked, no, Zara had the cooking skills of a rat.

"Sup, bitch," I rolled my eyes at her choice of words, not really expecting anything less. "You want pizza?" she asked with a mouth full of cheese and sauce. I scrunched my nose at how unladylike she sounded but laughed anyways. "I'm pretty sure I left you like half a slice in the warmer, I might've gotten a bit carried away, but in my defense you can't really control yourself when eating fucking pizza."

Zara was a beautiful woman, her hair cascaded down her shoulders and stopped somewhere around her chest, light brown lowlights and her naturally wavy dark brown hair complimented each other gracefully. She wasn't really tall but you wouldn't say short either, around 5.4 but her attitude somehow made her stand taller. Born in Mauritius and raised in London, she then moved here to NYC.

"it's cool, I've eaten already." She lowered the volume of the TV where she watched some re-run of a Marvel movie. Typical.

"Oh good I wanted that slice too." Jumping over the couch, she headed to the small kitchen and grabbed the last cold pizza triangle before eating it in one whole bite.

Shaking my head, I made my way through the relatively small living space and to my room. Which over-looked the city. A major reason I chose to live here, it was beautiful and calming.

Showers were my favourite activity, I adored the warmth the water provided as it ran through my hair and all over my skin, in a soothing manner almost making me forget all the problems that stressed me.

I slipped on my silky night dress and checked my phone, setting the dreaded alarm and falling asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. Welcoming a deep sleep which I knew would be interrupted at early hours of the morning, when the nightmares wouldn't keep away.

Alarms had to have been the most unnecessary creation there ever was. All they really did was wake you up when the last thing you wanted to do was open your eyes. I tried to ignore it, covering my face with a pillow before I heard a scream from the living room.

"Amelie if you don't shut that thing off I'm coming straight in there to throw it out the God damn window."

I groaned at the sound of my roommate's voice and the alarm which somehow sounded familiar. Switching it off and cursing at the numbers that were thrown together in a blur before my sleep deprived eyes, 6:45 a.m. I wanted to scream at how early it was. Knowing I hadn't received a good night's rest.

I got up and dragged my bare feet on the cold tiles, shivering as I made my way to the bathroom, dragging my hair into a ponytail and acting out my morning routine.

By the time I got out and dressed, it was already 8:30 and I barely had enough time to drown my tiredness in a bowl of cornflakes before covering my sleepy friend with a throw-over blanket on the couch she had fallen asleep on.

The ride to Rikers only took about twenty four minutes in my car, I parked in a small parking lot reserved for staff after they ensured I wasn't carrying any weapons, I made my way to the nurses quarters and changed into the light blue uniform with my name tag sewn onto it. Hoping this would be an easy day and the inmates didn't decide to bite each other's heads off.

I usually didn't have to do much around here except attend to the men after they got into an unnecessary fight about silly stuff. I had been working here for around three months and it was exactly what you would expect for a woman working in a place where men had been deprived of any female interaction for long periods of time, they constantly made an effort to flirt with us but kept their hands at bay, knowing the consequences they would face if they didn't stand by that rule.

"Good morning Amelie." I was greeted by a fellow nurse and my only friend here, Anastasia but Ana for short. "I assume those bags under your eyes are Gucci." I rolled my eyes at her but smiled anyway pulling her in for a quick side hug. "Well of course, only the best." I played along and the echo of her laugh could be heard from down the hallway.

By now the inmates were in the mess hall and we were headed to our respective offices. Mine located on the east wing where some of the higher end criminals were held, which didn't irk me at all as I felt used to them anyway, oddly.

We headed our separate ways and I greeted the guard who stood opposite my space, in case anything was to go wrong here.

I had become accustom to Sean, he was very quiet and I loved the simplicity of his being.

I sat down on the chair in front of my desk glancing at a new inmate's file. I had received one every time an inmate of the prison was in need of a check-up which happened yearly . It made me aware of their health. Allergies, diseases, etc. we made an extra effort to have the correct tools to medicate everyone.

I made sure of it.

I opened the small booklet which read the name;

Alejandro Russo.
