Adira lay in her bed, watching the flashing of the lightning and listening to the clapping of the thunder and the pounding of the rain on the old shingled roof of her two-story home. She glanced at her clock. A bold red 7:03 AM blinked back at her. "Shit," She mumbled, sitting upright in her bed, barely missing the sloped ceiling. She grabbed her jacket of the lounge chair in her room and threw on some old muck boots. And hurried downstairs to the door.

The wind whipped her already soaken hair across her face, making it sting. She shivered as the cold rain sliced at her skin and through her jacket. 'Why does it have to be raining,' she thought to herself. Hurrying into the barn that smelled of horses and hay as well as a earthly scent she recognized as home. 

Annoyed by the weather Adira flung off her jacket onto the floor and walked over to the table, her sneakers squishing and squeaking on the laminate floors. 

"Adira," scolded her mother, "Pick that coat up right now and hang it to dry!"

Adira grudgingly did as she was told. "And remember to leave those sneakers in the mudroom," her mother called after her. She sat her coat upon one of the many hooks near the door of the mudroom and slipped her soggy sneakers off her feet. 

"What's for breakfast," she heard her father shout over the sounds of the storm.

"Eggs and hashbrowns," her mother replied.

Adira wrinkled her nose, she hated hashbrown, even the smell of them disgused her, "I think I'll have a bowl of cereal," she murmured to her mom, reaching into the pantry and grabbing the box of Mini Wheats. 

"God dammit," she heard her father shout, "The goddang roof is leaking again," She put her headphones in and blared her music, drowning out her father's voice, which was sure to cause another fight.
