Intro

Behind the bustling city of New York, the sun was slowly setting, casting it's light across a cloud filled sky to produce a rather lovely sunset and making the city's skyline seem almost surreal in a way. It seemed so calm from a distance, and hid the fact that something extraordinary was about to happen. On the ground, in a gap between two skyscrapers, two blurs of glowing lights, one blue and one green, made an appearance, their speed so great that they left behind trails of light that were quick to fade away.

Both blurs were quickly followed by a third, this one leaving behind a red trail of light. The red blur, belonging to a speeding aircraft of some sort, fired upon the blue and green blurs, which were currently making their way up the side of a skyscraper. Here, one began to notice something about these strange anomalies.

The blue colored one seemed to travelling directly against the side of the building, while the green one seemed to be airborne, propelling itself along with platforms of green colored magic that showed up in a rhythmic fashion before quickly fading away. The green blur's movements were also much more sporadic, and often made much sharper turns when compared to the smoothed out ones from the blue anomaly. Banking hard around the building, all three blurs made it back to the ground, and picked up their speed in a straight line road, all while the blue and green anomalies did their best to avoid more fired off shots from the red blur.

Coming closer to them, one could to make out what seemed to be the source of the strange high speed blurs. The blue one, the one that stayed on the ground, belonged to what appeared to be a running blue anthropomorphic hedgehog of some kind with large red and white shoes, white gloves, a small satchel, and glowing blue eyes. The airborne green blur belonged to what appeared to be a black dragon like creature with glowing green eyes, white stripes on it's side, a grey underside, and messy grey fur along it's spine.

The dragon creature was also wearing clothes, something the blue hedgehog didn't have, but that didn't really matter.

Making a sharp right turn, both creatures veered from side to side, avoiding the explosions that were caused from shots landing on everything except for their intended targets. Darting across an intersection, another explosion had the hedgehog jumping off of the side of a car, while simultaneously forcing the dragon creature to perform a hard barrel roll to the side to avoid any debris.

Alright, we know what you guys are thinking. Why is that incredibly handsome hedgehog-

Not to mention the rather attractive looking dragon?

Uh, whose telling this intro? Hush for a moment

Ugh, rude.

Anyway. Why are these good looking creatures being chased by a madman with a mustache from the civil war?

After the hedgehog landed on it's feet while the dragon pulled itself out of the barrel roll, the two shared a look with each other before looking back at the aircraft. More specifically, the man perched inside it's cockpit as he let out an evil sounding chuckle. Both creatures looked ahead, and the blue one began swerving all over the road to avoid the incoming traffic.

Well, to be honest, it feels like we've been running, or in some cases flying, our whole lives.

The hedgehog jumped over an incoming car, and the dragon quickly dove down towards the other side of the street to avoid yet another fired off shot from the aircraft behind them.

Is this too much? Am I going too fast?

Yes.

Well, hey, it's kinda what I do. You know what? Let's back things up.

That's the first time I've ever heard you say that

-A long while back-

The sun rose steadily into a partially cloudy sky over the horizon of an unknown ocean, casting it's bright morning rays on a massive island shrouded in mist and covered in waterfalls, green grass, open plains, massive rocks stacks, a couple of mountains, and thick luscious forests.

This is where we're-

Hey!

Oh heck no! You got the intro, it's only fair that I get the actually storytelling part here! You show hogger.

Ugh, fine. And I'm not a show hogger.

Pfft, yes you are. Anyway. This is the island where my brother and I are from.

Zooming across what appeared to be a curving artificial path, much younger versions of the dragon and hedgehog stayed side by side with each other, their voices high pitched with youth as they tossed playful insults at each other.

It had everything, like sandy beaches, huge waterfalls, and it also had one of the best things ever. Loop-d-loops! Of course, they were never much a problem for me, considering the fact that I could simply fly through them.

The young dragon let out a yelp of laughter as it zoomed after the small blue hedgehog, flying through a loop-d-loop while the other went around the inside of it. The creature of flight maintained it's lead for maybe one or two seconds before it over taken by the hedgehog, who zoomed up a ramp. An action that sent the creature high into the air while the dragon merely headed straight for the the ramp that was positioned on an adjacent island.

Both hedgehog and dragon made contact with each other there, and continued on their way.

And best of all, we never had to take a bus to school. Especially since this guy could cross the entire island in two seconds flat while pulling me along at the same time.

Aand proud of it!

And besides, there wasn't a school to begin with, which was absolutely great. Pretty cool island, right? Right. Glad we can agree.

Letting out a whoop, the little hedgehog balled up itself up, and put on an extra burst of speed, zooming ahead of the young dragons and ignoring any protests from the creature of flight to slow down.

We were both born with incredible powers that no one else seemed to have, and we were warned to keep those powers and abilities secret. But, of course, being young and stupid, we did the complete opposite.

Huffing a bit, the little dragon put on it's own burst of speed, and managed to catch up to the hedgehog right as it went into some kind of cottage. Both creatures went rolling and bouncing, and collided with the armoured chest of a large owl, who gave a chirp as it was startled awake on it's wooden perch. The hedgehog and the dragon rolled to a stop, letting out giggles as they fell into a pile of tangled limbs and bodies.

And that owl, is Longclaw. She took care of the two of us, even though I'm fairly certain we got on her nerves quite a few times.

She's basically Obiwan Kenobi! If Obiwan Kenobi had a beak and ate mice.

Longclaw shook herself, and her feathers, which had first been perked up from being startled, began to smooth over and lay themselves flat. She gave both the dragon and the hedgehog before her a reprimanding look.

"Sonic, Drift, someone could have seen the both of you" she gently chided, leaning forward as she spoke.

The blue hedgehog, Sonic, gave a huff of laughter as the little dragon disentangled itself from him.

"Pfft, no one saw us. We're too fast!" it gloated as it quickly in placed. Sonic's voice, though high pitched, indicated a male.

The little dragon, Drift, took the chance to jump into the conversation as it stood up on it's hind legs.

"Besides, we wanted to get you something. Go on Sonic! Show her" it said, it's voice a few octaves higher than Sonic's, which indicated a female.

Sonic, at his sister's request, reached a small gloved hand into the quills in the back of his head, and pulled out a rather beautiful sunflower. Longclaw looked surprised, then let out a small pleased sigh, her expression switching from one of reprimanding to one of gratefulness as she reached a wing forward to take the flower. However, the sound of a branch or twig snapping made the owl freeze, and caused one of the dragon's ears to twitch and flicked backwards.

Even Sonic, as sporadic as he was, was alerted to the noise, and all three creatures turned their heads to find the noise's source. Drift's ears, which had been perked straight up with alertness, now fell back to the side of her head as she took in the sight of red furred warriors perching in the trees beyond the doorway, bows in hands and arrows in the drawstrings. Longclaw, despite her size, could move quite fast when she wanted, and this was one such moment as she practically flung herself at the youngsters.

"Get down!" she cried, enveloping the dragon and the hedgehog in her wings as she kicked the door closed.

Arrows that had already been fired protruded through the wood, allowing small amounts of light to flood the room. A couple of newly fired arrows broke through the window, barely missing the owl and instead embedding themselves into the wooden floorboards.

As it turns out, with great powers like ours, it often brought around bad people who were power hungry. And me and my brother had led them straight to us.

Drift let out a fearful whine as one of the warriors brandished a net, and shifted her body closer to Sonic's, slowly moving her tail to wrap it around him. The feeling of Longclaw shifting her grasp had the two focusing on her instead of the warriors, and the owl wrapped her talons around them both, firm enough to ensure that they wouldn't come free, but gentle enough the she wouldn't risk hurting them.

"Longclaw?" Sonic asked, confusion clouding his fear filled eyes.

"Hold on" was all the owl said before she gave a great flap of her wings.

Bursting through a different window, she took off flying, holding both dragon and hedgehog close to her body as she rose above the canopy of forest, tilting her body this way and that to avoid the arrows that came flying at the trio. However, a particular arrow that had been fired off slammed itself into the owl's side, and she gave a cry of pain as she began plummeting to the forest floor. Shifting Drift and Sonic from her talons to her chest, Longclaw held them both there with the help of her wings, and together, the trio hit the ground hard, bouncing and rolling to a stop.

"Longclaw!" the young dragon cried, ears pinned against her skull and her eyes brimming with tears as she caught sight of the arrow, now splattered with red, that stuck out of the Guardian's side.

"I'll be alright, my dear" Longclaw reassured her as she got to her feet to set both kids down, but the pain in her voice said otherwise.

"...Listen carefully Sonic, Drift. You both have powers unlike anything I've ever seen. And that means someone will always want it. The only way to stay safe, is to stay hidden" she said.

Reaching into a small tan leather pouch that was tied to her armour, Longclaw pulled out a small golden ring, and tossed it into the path ahead. The ring began spinning, and grew in size until someone as big as the owl herself could pass through it. Inside the ring, there was a dark forest, and it was presumably night time in whatever world that forest belonged to.

"This world is on the far side of the universe. You should be safe there" she stated, beckoning both kids to come closer with one of her wings.

"We don't want to go without you!" Sonic protested, jutting out his bottom lip a bit.

Longclaw wasn't going to be swayed by that this time.

"You must" Longclaw told him.

Untying the pouch with the rings, she handed it off to Drift, who took it with shaky hands.

"Remember, these rings will be your most important possession" she told the two.

A sudden shout from behind made everyone spin around, and trio perceived with terror the group of warriors dropping down from the trees and running full speed at them. Longclaw forced the two kids to look at her.

"If your ever discovered, use one. Keep each other safe, and rely on one another. And most importantly, never stop running" she commanded as she guided them both towards the spinning ring portal.

For a moment, both kids simply stood and stared with tear filled eyes and pinned back ears.

"Now go!" Longclaw ordered, giving them both another push before turning to face off against the warriors.

Holding the bag with her mouth, Drift finally wasted no time in leaping through the portal and taking off with Sonic following a split second after her. In a matter of seconds, the two had already managed to get a considerable distance away from the portal. But of course, that was the moment when Sonic chose to look back.

"Longclaw!" he cried, skidding to a halt before darting back the way he came, arms and hands reaching for the owl guardian even though she was too far away for him to grab or hold.

"Sonic!" Drift cried, sliding to a halt herself before dropping the rings and going after her brother.

Longclaw looked back at both of them, a sad smile etched in her face as the ring began to close.

"Goodbye Sonic. Goodbye Drift" she said, her voice full of sorrow.

"No!"

"Longclaw!"

The guardian turned away, and their cries fell upon deaf ears. Right as Sonic reached the portal, the ring dissipated. Taking with it the chance from both kids to ever see their beloved Longclaw again.

"No!" the blue hedgehog cried, slowing to a stop once more.

Drift had come to a halt herself, and was now clasping her pawed hands over her nose and mouth as she struggled to not let the tears drop. She couldn't let that happen. Not now.

Sonic needed someone to fall back on, and even though she was devastated herself, Longclaw had said to look out for each other, so, swallowing her own tempest of emotions, Drift approached the blue hedgehog, her arms reaching out and her hands outstretched. He was quick to fall into them, sobbing while muttering Longclaw's name like it was a mantra that would bring her back in some way shape or form. Slowly crumbling to the ground, the dragon rested her head on top of her brother's and curled her tail around the both of them while closing her eyes, ignoring the feeling of her own tears slipping out.

It wouldn't hurt her to carry her pain in silence this once...
