19-I'm a Super

Chapter Nineteen
I'm a Super

I didn't sleep that night. How could I? How could he? How could he! How dare he!

Last night my thoughts were full of adrenaline and mixed emotions. His sudden action caught me way off guard, and I felt both sad and angry that he would just pull away and say he regretted it.

How did I feel about it? I felt hurt and I felt rejected. Could you blame me? And what was I supposed to do the next time I saw him? This was his fault! He was the one that put both of us in an uncomfortable situation.

In the morning I was nothing but tired. No sleep gives you pretty bad results. When I looked in the mirror, even I felt sorry for myself.

I managed to pick myself up and get out of bed, but no matter what I did, I couldn't help but replay the same moment over in my mind, of his lips against mine.

I trudged my way throughout the house in search for either my brother or Audrey, because their presence could be comforting, but as I made my third loop around the small flat, I realized they weren't there.

I checked in all the rooms and looked in all the closets, but still no horny friend and brother.

I wasn't particularly worried about them, but rather the fact that now I had no one to drive me to school, which would mean I had to get a ride. So after managing to dress myself and pack my bag, I caught the city bus to school.

By the time the school came into view, I immediately knew something was wrong.

Students flooded the parking lot, and others were lined up at the doors as they took their turn being let in. Just the sight of it made my stomach turn, but I think it was because of more than just my breakfast.

All around me conversations filled my ears. I searched the huge crowd for any familiar faces when I caught sight of Owen, Noah and Sam.

I jogged over to where the boys stood, and held my bag tightly in my hands.

"What's going on?" I asked once I had reached them.

"You're late," was Noah's response.

"I hate to catch a bus here," I told him and I watched as Owen bit his nails.

"Principle Moore made an announcement that you can't be let inside unless you get a tracker," Owen shivered.

"A tracker?" I asked, "what do you mean?"

"They're injecting everyone with this tracker," Sam explained. He looked very uneasy and uncomfortable. "Principle Moore said that the Supers need to keep track of everyone because of everything that's been going on. It lets them know if someone's in trouble" Sam furrowed his brows worriedly. "There are about seven Supers standing at the entrance, injecting students before they enter the building."

Right after the words left his mouth, my eyes jumped to the front entrance and sure enough there were seven Supers standing at each door, with boxes full of some sort of injection. Amongst those seven, two happened to be my brother and best friend.

"Could you guys just wait here for a minute?" I asked them, "I'll be right back. I just have to quickly go check something."

They boys nodded and I took off in a light jog over to the entrance where Audrey stood, and I got close enough so that I was a few feet away from her.

"Luna!" I called, but she was too busy injecting a student.

"Luna!" I tried again, and this time she paused for a quick moment to turn her head my way.

"Luna!" I waved my hand at her, "it's me! Please tell me what's going on!"

She just eyed me up and down before turning her attention back to the next student, completely ignoring me.

Something was wrong. Very wrong.

I didn't bother to go see Drew. Instead I just quickly returned to where the three boys gathered.

I didn't know what to say to them. I didn't even know for sure if something was wrong.

"Guys," I tried, "we have to go."

Owen gave me a look. "Uh, why?"

"Uh," I searched my mind for an excuse. "I feel like skipping today."

"Since when do you skip?" Noah asked.

The pain in my stomach intensified, and I tried not to let anything show.

"Let's just go," Owen, said, as he grabbed Sam and Noah by the wrist and started dragging them off to the entrance.

My mind was panicking because I couldn't let my friends be injected. I quickly grabbed Sam's wrist and yanked him out of Owen's grasp before dragging him away.

"Sam" I said, "You can't go inside, somethings wrong."

He looked around and nodded. "I know."

"What do we do?" I asked him.

He put a hand up. "Okay, don't worry. Leave it to me."

"You have a plan?" I asked, "Let me help."

He shook his head. "No, Skylar just leave it to me, seriously."

"No," I shook my head too, "I doubt you even know what you're doing."

He pursed his lips in annoyance and hesitated before saying, "Seriously, I'm the one for the job. I'm the best shot we've got right now."

"What makes you so good?" I questioned as I placed my hands on my hips.

"I'm a Super."

I sucked in a breath. Those words wiped my sassy smirk right off my face. Sam was a Super. A Super. Then mind jumped right back to last night at how close we were lying, the subconscious feeling of comfort and familiarity...

"Holy shit," I whispered as I stared at him.

Sam bit his lip. "I know it's a bit to take in, but Skylar please just let me do the work. Stay here."

I slapped him. I slapped his right across his cheek.

"How dare you?" I roared at him as he winced and touched his cheek. "You had no right to just kiss me then leave!"

Sam made a face as he held his red cheek as I went to go slap him again, but his head perked him when I mentioned the last sentence. "Kiss you? I kissed you? When the hell did I kiss you?"

My hand froze in the air and I stared at him.

"Uh," I started. "Which Superhero are you?"

He winced again as he tried to shield his cheek from me, but stuck his chest out proudly as he answered. "I'm Beast."

Oh. Oh. Oh no.

"Oh," was my reply. Why did that name sound so familiar?

"Yeah" He replied, "So let me do the work, alright?"

My eyes lit up and I snapped my fingers in recognition. "Oh! You're- You're that dude! The dog whisperer!"

Sam's eyes sparked and his face quickly carried a scowl.

"What are you talking about?" He demanded. "I'm a very respected Super, and, mind you, I can actually speak to all animals, not just dogs."

I wasn't listening to his response, though, because I was too busy picturing him being the guy in the tight, green spandex.

"And you claim to be our best shot!" I slapped my knee and barked out a laugh.

Sam gave me a puzzled look. "Can I go already? I don't get what's so funny?"

I pretended to wipe a fake tear from my eye. "Honey, let me lead."

Sam was both confused and annoyed at my behaviour, and didn't have time to react as I grabbed him by the wrist and dragged him along with me up the stairs.

I reached my brother, who was silently and obediently injecting students with trackers.

I watched as one of my classmates visibly flinch as she got the chip injected, and held her arm in pain and she walked inside.

"Drew," I said, but the person my brother was objecting was the only person to look my way.

"Drew?" Sam whispered, despite not needing to. "Who's Drew?"

"Inferno," I corrected, but my brother continued his job without a trace of emotion.

I marched forward and tried to grab his shoulder, but he quickly grabbed my wrist before I could touch him.

Drew watched me intently, and I stared back. The next student to be injected watched in confusion, much like the rest of the students next in line.

"You need to stop," I demanded. "Now."

Inferno tried to let go and resume, but I quickly grabbed his hand to pull him back.

In a flash, his hand was on fire and I let out a cry as I let go.

I tried to step back, but my brother kicked at my feet and sent my tumbling over.

He tried to get another kick, but on an instinct I tried to outgrow, I braced myself and turned invisible.

I heard audible gasps from my classmates, and I very quickly switched back to visible.

My brother took another quick, and I dodged it by rolling over, but I turned to my right and saw Audrey coming at me too.

There was no doubt that I had the whole school's attention by now, but I couldn't care less because I was just about to get squished by my brother and best friend, and not to mention the quaking Super standing just a few feet away.

Just before Luna and Inferno were close enough to hurt me, the two of them were, quite literally, zapped and fell to the ground.

I frantically looked around for the source, only to find him standing a few feet away.

People starting yelling and backing away from the building. Chaos had erupted amongst the school. But the sight of him wasn't very shocking. If anything I was still quite angry. I was more shocked at which power he chose to use.

I couldn't do anything but stare as he spun around and caught sight of me. He didn't hesitate to grab hold my arm before grabbing Sam's too,

I was more startled than anything and barley had time to register the fact that he was here. Standing in front of me. Holding my arm.

Static looked as if he was about to take off, but before he had a chance to move, Inferno was up and charging at him, his face redder than ever and his hands full of flames.

Static quickly realized both me and Sam's arms so that he could bring his arms up to defend himself.

Inferno tried to swat him with his burning hand, but Static was quick to doge it. Instead, swiveled underneath his arm and lunged for his torso, causing both of them to tumble.

Before Static could give my brother the chance to burn him, he quickly rolled off of him and brought himself back into a fighting stance.

My attention was diverted from the fight due to something flying over my head. I looked up around me to find that tree had been ripped out of the grounded and low laid on the other side of the parking lot. I looked in the opposite direction for the source of the odd occurrence, to find Luna on her feet and ready to fight.

I searched my mind for something - anything - that could help me in this situation, but started to lose my balance and realized that i was slowly being lifted off the ground.

Panic rose in the pit of my stomach and I whipped my head back at Luna, who was staring at me intently, obviously implying that she was the reason for me floating.

My mind was screaming at me to do something. Make a distraction - cry for help - use my force. But I had too much adrenaline rushing through my veins to react in any reasonable way.

My eyes widened as I grew further and further from the ground. None of the Supers had yet noticed the fact that I was floating in the air. Although quite a few students in the crowd had but the most they could do was point or cower in fear.

I wanted to act, but it almost felt like the fear had stripped me of any abilities, and I was just as good as any mundane. But powers or not, that no longer mattered in the next few seconds because I was soon spiraling back down to earth, and then my vision went black.

***

... hey guys!

so i know it's been a long while since i've updated an i am terribly sorry for that. i'm incredibly mad at myself for not updating. the good news at least is that i think i'm getting the problems in my life sorted out and things are getting better!

bad news is that i'm sort of losing the motivation to write...

i love to write, don't get me wrong. i also love this story i've created and the characters i've become acquaintances with. i want to continue writing, but the difficult part is not only finding motivation, but it's the incredible temptation to start a new story.

i have considered just quitting and leaving this book, but i decided not only would that be unfair to you guys, but it would also be unfair to me after all the effort I've put into my story and how much it's helped me with plot development, description, character development and so much more.

so yes, i will continue this story but in order to keep publishing chapter more often than not, the chapters i post will have to be short. by short i mean maybe 1000 words type of short versus the usual 3000.

i hope this chapter makes you feel a bit better, and you agree with my decision.

with love,
