1-Don't Wet Your Spandex!
Chapter 1
Don't Wet Your Spandex!
"Help!" I spun around to face the burning house once more. Gold and I had already rescued the mayor himself, as well as his wife and two children. But as I recalled, there was still one child left inside.
"Gold!" I yelled as he started to rid his cape of ashes. I've reminded my boyfriend many times before that a cape was a safety hazard and that he shouldn't wear one, but he still insisted, claiming that it wouldn't makes sense if he wasn't to wear a cape because of his name. Gold Cape.
He stopped what he was doing and whipped around to face me. "Yeah?"
"There's still someone left!" I exclaimed, pointing in the direction of the house. I could hear sirens wailing in the distance, but they were much to faint for help to be there anytime soon.
"There is?" He questioned, his face confused as he turned back to the house. Once more, I could hear a small voice calling for help.
"Oh, there is!" Right away, he dashed back into the house with me hot on his trail.
"Why does Static have to be such a pain?" I muttered. Static - the city's newfound Super who, unfortunately, had to be a villain. A very cruel villain, may I add, causing trouble for not only the humans but his fellow Supers. But what scared me the most is that no one knew a thing about him.
By now, the main floor was full of smoke, which stung my lungs. I covered my mouth as I heard Gold coughing from just a few feet before me.
"GG, can you shield us?" I nodded, opening my fists and forcing a blue wave to escape my fingers, forming a bubble around the two of us and blocking the smoke from entering our lungs.
"That's better," I could hear the smirk in his voice as I quickly followed him up the stairs.
"Help!" I heard another cry coming from the end of the hallway. I followed after Gold as he kicked down the door, revealing a small girl, 7 years at the most I presumed, sitting on her bed and clutching her sheets tight.
Her dark and heated face lit up at the scene of us. "Gold Cape! Gone Girl!" She cheered, looking between the two of us.
"Hey sweetie," I greeted her with a smile, "what's your name?"
"Margret," she told us proudly, sticking out her chest. I smiled at her childishness.
"Alright, don't worry, we'll get you out of here." She nodded enthusiastically as Gold picked her up in his arms and covered her with her blankets.
We turned back around and faced the burning hallway. "I'm scared," Margret said just before we stepped out of her room, her smile now gone. Gold and I both shared a look before giving her a comforting smile.
"I know you are, Margret," I told her, "sometimes us Supers get scared too. But the only thing you can do now is be brave, okay?" She nodded worriedly.
"We gotta go," Gold said and I turned my shield back on. We turned around to run back down the stairs, but the floor in front of us had suddenly collapsed. I couldn't help but feel like Peter Parker.
"You've got to be kidding me," I heard Gold mutter as he shifted Margret in his arms so that she couldn't see what just happened.
"Fly yourself and Margret down. Try not to hit anything," I told Gold.
"What about you?" He asked me worriedly.
I smiled at him. "I'll find a way, don't worry about me."
Hesitating, he leaped down to the floor below and looked up.
"Be safe," he told me.
"You're paranoid," I laughed, as he ran off, "don't wet your spandex!"
"That was one time!" He called, his voice fading.
I laughed and looked around for an escape. I knew I couldn't take the stairs because the floor in front of me was no more, and I couldn't jump down because I have horrible mobility so I'd probably land on scorching hot coals, but I could always jump out the window.
The window it was.
I returned to Margret's room without getting burnt, and looked out the window. Below me there was an ambulance with paramedics caring for Mayor Mark Harrison and his family, and a police cruiser pulled up to the curb. They must have arrived while I was up here.
I hoisted myself up onto the ledge, and got ready to jump by steadying myself and taking a deep breath because, like I said, I've got horrible mobility.
I heard more sirens getting louder and louder, so I looked up to see a fire truck driving up the road. Finally.
I was just about to jump when I heard something crack behind me. I whipped my body around to see a crack forming in the roof. Oh no.
Now, Skylar! You need to jump now!
I shifted my attention back to the ground, and I spotted Gold helping the paramedics with Margret.
Still sitting in the ledge, I took one last breath before I pushed myself off just as the roof fell. I landed hard on my feet, sending a jolt of pain up my legs but I shook it off.
From the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a gold cape, so I looked up to see Gold jogging over to me.
"Now, would you look at that?" He smiled at me and crosses his arms, "you made it out alive."
I shrugged sheepishly and pointed to myself, "What can I say? I'm just that good."
He was about to say something when he froze at the sight of something behind me. I turned around to see what caught his attention, and watched as cop made his way over to us. I sighed in annoyance.
"We better get going before the police start to question us, or whatever the heck they usually want." I nodded in agreement. He was just about to pick me up in his arms when the officer called out to us.
"Wait! Gone Girl! Gold Cape!"
I looked to Gold in alarm, and he quickly picked me up and took off, leaving the officer yelling at us from the ground.
I laughed as I felt the air hit my face. I love flying. I wouldn't trade the feeling of freedom for anything. Gold knew I loved it, so he took me flying whenever I wanted, which I really appreciated. Its a bit unfortunate that out of all my powers, flying is one I don't have.
The moment was soon interrupted as I lost the safe feeling of Gold's arms, and I found myself dropping back down to the ground.
I screamed, my arms flailing all over. What happened? Where'd he go?
But his arms wrapped back around me as quickly as they left. I looked up to him in disbelief as I found him laughing down at me.
"Grayson!" I scowled and hit his chest, making him laugh harder. "You know I hate when you do that!"
"Oh shush," he told me, still laughing, "Don't say my name out loud."
"It's not like anyone's gonna hear it up here," I gestured to the sky surrounding us and he just shook his head with a smile. I sighed.
"Don't you think we should at least be more appreciated for what we do?" He suddenly asked, his smile fading. "I mean, we put our lives at risk everyday and the least they could do is thank us," he muttered.
"That may be true," I said, "but that's not why we do this. We do it for the people - to make this world a better place." I felt him nod against me. I leaned back into his chest, enjoying the rest of the ride.
Simultaneously we both got the queasy feeling in our gut, signalling trouble. I heard Gold let out a sigh.
"It's on the other side of town," he muttered.
"Just drop me off here," I told him, "I'll walk home."
"Are you sure?" He asked, "will you be okay with walking? What if I need your help?"
"Don't worry," I waved my hand to dismiss it. By now we were simply hovering in the air. "I can walk from here. Plus, I'm pretty sure there's already a few Supers on their way."
"Alright then." Gold flew us down to the empty road below. I knew the area we were in, it was about five blocks away from my house.
"Thank you," I told him with a smile which he returned.
"Have a good night, Skylar. Be safe." he kissed my cheek and flew off.
"You already said that!" I yelled at him, already making my way down the sidewalk.
I'm not very scared about getting hurt or anything like that. It's almost like my Super Suit gives this sort of confidence and courage to do things I normally wouldn't do as me. Maybe it was because no one could see behind my mask, so I didin't need to really think about what the public would think of me. Although, Gold and I were one of the two most known and reliable Supers in this city.
Speaking of masks, they're the second most important thing about being a Super, powers being first. Your mask is the only thing separating your normal life to your Super one. You need to rely on your mask, since that thin layer of fabric which you tie around your head is the only thing sealing your identity.
Most Supers are unaware of each other's identities. It can still be hard to trust other Supers, even though I work with them. The only identities I knew were Gold's, my best friend Audrey - or Luna, her alter-ego - and my brother Drew whose alter-ego is Inferno.
Turning the corner, I listened to the silence of the night. With no car in sight, I continued my probe but I was suddenly thrown violently into an alleyway at my side.
I let out a groan as I landed on my hip. I looked up to see three figures coming my way, and at first I felt a bit annoyed that some dirty and bored teenagers thought they could beat up a Super, but then I realize that they were Supers. Not Supers that I recognized, though.
What caught my attention was that all three of them were wearing capes. Actual capes. The only Super I know that wore a cape was Gold, and these three were clearly not Gold, because they were dressed head-to-toe in black. Just black.
My small wave of courage soon vanished as the three Supers slowly approached me. I put up one hand in defence, using the other to help me keep my balance as I backed up.
"What are you doing?" I asked them, trying not to let my fear show. I tried to back my butt further, but felt the pressure of a wall against my back. Great. Just great.
I watched as the boys stopped about three feet away from where I sat. I slowly stood back up and watched as the one in the middle cracked his knuckles for a dramatic effect.
"Eliminating do-gooders like you," he growled before pouncing on me.
I let out a yelp as he rammed me into the wall, knocking the wind out of me. The two others grabbed my arms, pinning them against the wall.
I struggled in their grip, and the guy that rammed me brung his fist up, to punch me in the gut most likely.
I screamed as his fist hit my stomach, knocking the wind out of me again. As a reflex, I tried to bring down my arms to hold my stomach but found them still held against the wall.
They're Supers, I remembered. Super strength. Right.
You're a Super too, dummy.
Oh, right, I'm a Super too! I should probably, you know, use my powers.
The idiot that punched me brung his fist up again, and just before he hit I sent out my shield, deflecting his punch and sending him flying backward.
The two holding me back were taken by surprise, and I quickly slipped out of their hold and turned myself invisible before they reached out to grab me. I smiled at their shocked and fearful faces.
"Gone Girl living up to her name," the big guy growled, getting up from the ground and brushing off dirt.
They clearly did't know what to do now, so I took the opportunity to punch the two of them. I whipped around to see the big guy charging at me even though he had no idea where I was, so just as he neared me I let out my shield once again, sending him back to the ground.
I spun on my heals to face the other two who seemed to be even more enraged as they stood up. One hesitated, looking for where I could possibly be standing, so during that time I kicked him in his delicate area, and he grabbed his crotch before falling to his knees where I punched him in the face one last time, letting him fall to the ground.
I turned to face the last of the three, but to my enjoyment I watched as he hurriedly ran out of the alley.
Smiling, I wiped my hands on my spandex and was about to leave when I saw another Super leaning against the alley wall, his arms crossed and a smirk on his face.
I frowned at him and put my hands on my hips. "You think this is funny?" I demanded.
He just nodded, his smile getting bigger by the second.
"They could have killed me and all you do is watch." I scowled at him, and he let out a laugh.
He shrugged, "I was about to help you, you know," he reassured me with another smirk, "but you seemed to have it under control."
I watched as he pushed off the wall and walked a bit closer to me. I could see him better in the dim light, and I noticed he was wearing a tight, blue spandex, matched with a black mask. My eyes widened in realization.
"You're Static?"
"The one and only," he gestured to himself.
"What are you doing here?" I asked with no sincerity found in my voice, but in my mind I couldn't help but fangirl a little. I mean, I was talking to the Static. I was the only one who knew what he looked like, as far as I knew.
"Oh, you know, looking for trouble." He smirked again.
"You should leave," I said it as a demand rather than a suggestion, "I don't welcome you in this side of town."
He put his hands up in defence, "Alright, alright, Miss Bossy. I'm going." With that I watched him fly off.
Muttering a string of curses, I walked down the street to the front of the apartment building where I live with my brother.
Inside, I tried not to make a noise or draw attention to myself in case anyone freaked at having a Super in the building. I did this every night. If only I could just fly to our balcony.
I took the elevator upstairs and found myself in front of our door. I didn't bother to unlock it because neither my brother or me usually lock it in the first place.
I walked in quietly, trying not to wake my brother in case he was home already from fighting crime. I eventually made the short distance to my room where I let out a breath.
Sliding the very tight spandex off me, I changed into my pyjamas. The annoying thing about spandex is that these outfits are custom fit, so they're meant to be extremely tight which makes it both painful and time consuming when putting them on every night.
I got into bed and buried myself in my blankets, waiting for sleep to finally come after the long day.
"Would you look at that? A Super without her mask."
I shot straight up in my bed and faced the direction in where the voice came.
There sat Static, spinning around in my office chair like a child.
