expect the unexpected

Lukas's PoV

"We found Jess when she was only four," Fred said, looking up from his thick leather-bound book. "We didn't know who her parent were, but we didn't hesitate to take care of her." Romeo said quietly, glancing at Xara, who sat in front of me.

"I know this is a shock," Xara continued as I looked at the three of them, speechless. "But Jess thought it would be better if no one knew she was adopted." I shrugged. "Yeah, I'm cool with it." I said briskly. Romeo smirked. "He's not cool with it." he said.

And I started freaking out. "This is so weird but so cool! How long has it been? Have you been calling her Jess for a long time? How did you even come up with her name? I mean it's an amazing name and all but-." Fred held up a hand to make me stop my rambling. I grinned, feeling excited.

"You guys are practically related to the founders of our town!" I squeaked, trying to contain my excitement. It was true, since it was stated in the newspapers that Fred Brookes, Romeo Haven and Xara Collins were related to the founders of BeaconTown! Fred grinned. "You're a fanboy aren't you?" he said sarcastically, making Xara thump him on the head.

"Yeah, we're not related you know," Romeo said, sitting back on the couch, "Our parents were just friends. Do you get it?" he asked, looking at me this time. "It's still cool!" I exclaimed. Xara smiled a little and stood up. "I think you can see Jess now." she said as Fred and Romeo waved goodbye.

"Isn't it weird to be in charge of a while town?" I asked Xara, who was climbing the stairs with me towards Jess's room. "Kind of. Fred, Romeo and I got used to it anyway. And..." Xara looked at Jess's door, which was painted in beautiful shades of blue and purple so it looked like a galaxy.

"That's why Jess was so worried when you said you were going to move." I said, piecing the pieces together. Xara nodded, "Yeah, if I had to move and relocate my candy shop somewhere else, or even close it, I'd have to move to another house. Away from Fred and Romeo." Xara whispered, knocking on Jess's door.

"But if you're in charge of BeaconTown, why are you working in a candy shop?" I laughed, and Xara rolled her eyes. "Times up for questions. Now you can talk to her." Xara nudged me into Jess's room, which was illuminated by a desk lamp, where Jess was sitting.

Xara closed the door, making me wonder how much did the three of them trusted Jess and I. Quite a lot. "Hey Lukas," Jess closed her book and stood up, "You okay now?" I asked dumbly. Of course she was awake, dummy. She's standing up and practically walking towards you right now- wait. What?

Jess looked at me, one hand on her arm. "Thanks. For saving me." she said sheepishly. I waved a hand at her, as if to say don't bother. "I'd save you anytime Jess." I blurted out, and mentally kicking myself for saying that.

Don't blush don't blush don't blush. I told myself as Jess turned away to look out the window, where the moon was barely visible. "If you didn't come along..." Jess trailed off and opened the door to her balcony. "Why didn't you say that the Founders of BeaconTown were practically our parents?l" I exclaimed, excited. I wandered around her room as Jess paced around.

"Well, who would want to be friends with someone who's three parents could revoke their free Sunday ice cream privileges if you make me upset?" Jess smirked. I looked at her incredulously. "There's free ice cream on Sundays? And me. I'm your friend!" I said, grinning.

"Nah I was just kidding about the ice cream, but yeah, thanks Lukas." Jess said and yawned a little, but managed to fake it into a cough, to which I smiled at. "Go to sleep Jess." I said, making my way to the door.

I looked back to see Jess, lying on her bed and curled up next to a cat which I noticed that it was Cookie. "Night, Jess." I smiled and turned to go.
