archery lessons

Lukas's PoV

I watched as Jess set up a target board and started pulling out some arrows from the quiver. Then she stopped, grinning mischievously. "Do you want me to be the mean, scary teacher, or the stern scary teacher." I raised my eyebrows, "I'm pretty sure they're the same thing."

Jess waved a hand in my direction as she called me over to her. "Okay first things first. I'll have to teach you show to set up a bow." Jess said, brushing away a part of her raven black hair away from her face. I nodded, trying not to be distracted by Jess's beauty. She pointed to parts of the bow and recited their parts without missing a beat.

I ogled at her as she said all of the parts. I grinned when I realised that she didn't know I had stuck a pencil in her hair. "Lukas. Are you listening?" Jess asked, finally stopping her speech. I nodded. Jess rolled her eyes playfully. "Do you want a demo?" she grinned. I cheered, making her nudge my side with her elbow.

"Is my speech that boring?" she asked, taking out the parts of the bow. "Yes." Jess smirked and set up the bow without any problem. It was rather confusing but in less than a minute, she had a bow and her quiver of arrows. "How'd you do it that fast?" I asked, still shocked at how fast she took.

Jess grinned and slipped on a finger thing. "This is a fingertap. It helps to grip the bowstring better. Now watch and learn." Jess said, shooing me away. The target was at least thirty meters away, looking extremely far from where we stood.

"Jess? Are you sure-." I started to say when Jess swung out an arrow, nocked it, aimed and shot, all in less than fifteen seconds. Far away, I heard the dull thunk of the arrow hitting its mark. Jess turned to me, smirking. "I'm definitely sure." she said, a strand of hair falling into her eyes again.

I looked at her, in surprise, "How did you- what even?" I said, raising my arms. Jess laughed, her laughter sounding as beautiful as ever. "It requires practice." she said. "Now come on! I've already set up the bow so maybe you can give it a try." Jess said, pulling me over the bow.

Taking my hand, she took off the finger tap and put it on my fingers. I glanced at her but she seemed concentrated on the fingertap in my hand instead. But did she look a little red? All I know was that I was blushing like crazy.

"Okay so..." Jess looked up at me and quickly looked away, definitely red. "Wait for a moment here. I'll have to bring the target a little closer." She smiled and playfully skipped away. I rolled my eyes and ran my hand across the bow.

From the girl I accidentally tripped, and even hated, to a girl who meant the world to me.

"Just a little bit of drop to your shoulder!" Jess shouted to me as she ducked behind a tree. "I'm trying, you fool!" I laughed, making her laugh even harder.

"Instead of playing hide and seek behind that tree, why don't you come here and help me?" I shouted back, raising the bow and pulling back the string. "Fine. Just- shoot that last arrow you dummy!" Jess called from behind the tree. I closed my eyes and let go, and immediately, I heard the arrow hit the dirt. I opened my eyes and sighed.

Jess took a deep breath and trudged over to me. "I'll be the scary, mean-ass teacher." she said, grinning. I rolled my eyes, feeling like an idiot. "So. Mr Fletcher," Jess said sternly, taking out my glasses from my back pocket. "Hey!" I laughed, as she put them on. "Apparently, you're not relaxing when you're trying to shoot." she said, poking my arm.

I looked at her quizzically as she picked up the bow. "Look, you have to relax. Treat you bow as your friend." she patted the wooden bow. I snorted, since she looked ridiculous with my glasses. "Did I say you can laugh, Mr Fletcher? Detention!" she scolded, making me laugh even harder.

"Okay okay." I raised my hand, trying to gasp for breath. "Show me how you shoot, Mr Fletcher." Jess said, picking up a stick and poking my side with it. With her hair in a bun and the glasses, she really looked like a teacher. "Yes Miss Collins." I replied teasingly and held up the bow. Jess smirked and suddenly looked serious.

"So relax." she said and placed a hand on my arm. I flinched, surprised. "Relax." she said, without looking at me. I raised the bow, with her hand still on my arm. After awhile, I relaxed, when she didn't move her hand away. Jess nodded and told me to nock an arrow. "Now take a deep breath..." she said, poking my side and smiling.

I did as she said and she pointed to the board, which was near. "Now aim. Hold it for seven seconds, and shoot. Don't imagine my face there please." Jess grinned. I nodded, raising the bow again and aiming...

1. I could feel Jess standing beside me. 2. Her left hand was still on my arm. 3. I was taking archery lessons from her. 4. I couldn't seem to breathe when I'm with her. 5. I wondered is she would go out with me more often. 6. Holy shit, I had to aim, right? 7. Shit.

I let go, the arrow immediately flying forward and hitting the outside of the rings. Jess cheered and gave me a high five. "YOU DID IT!" she did a dance, making me laugh. The way she was reacting, you'd think that I just won the lottery or something. I smiled, happy that she was spending time with me.
