The Imposter Princess
I blinked open my eyes. I was in a stone cellar with barred windows. My pink dress that had belonged to the princess hung in a corner. I sat up and rubbed my eyes, struggling to remember what had happened. Then I remembered. "Who kissed me?" I asked the shadows."I did," A boy stepped out of the shadows."We need you, Princess."
"Who's we?" I asked, fuming.
"My brother, Toby, and I."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Colbin, Princess."
"Why do you keep calling me Princess?"
"The king is offering a reward for anyone who finds the princess. She's dead, but you could be her twin." He inched toward my face.
"So?" I asked. "What do you want me to do? Pretend to be her?"
"Exactly." His teeth shone in the lamplight.
"But I could die!" I said indignantly. I could feel the heat of his breath on my face.
"We won't let you die." He pulled me into a kiss. I relaxed into his arms. I vaguely heard him humming something. This won't be so bad. I thought. I can do it.
"Ok, I'll do it." I heard myself say.
"I knew you would." His smile was almost malicious, but I knew he only wanted the best for me. I wanted to serve him for the rest of my life.
When he left, I shook myself out of my trance and got to work. I pushed aside my pink dress and found a cracked mirror behind it. A white table with a hairbrush and makeup set patiently waited under the mirror. A washboard and wash pan sat next to the table.
I took the dress down and attempted to scrub the giant ink stain that had been there when I bought it out of the skirt, like every other time I washed it. The stain faded but stubbornly stayed on the fabric.
"Well, I guess I'll have to be a klutzy princess." I told myself.
I donned the dress after it was dried and brushed my hair free of snarls, wincing when the brush caught a snarl. With my hair braided down my back, I stared stupidly at the makeup.
"Maybe she never put makeup on?" I fabricated.
A knock sounded at the door. "Princess?" Colbin asked.
I breathed in deeply, preparing for my new life. "You may come in."
"Princess, are you ready to hear your escape story?" he entered.
"Regail me," I sighed, flipping my hand like I would assume a princess did.
"You escaped on a lifeboat and didn't know how to sail, so you spent six years trying to get back to this area. I met you in Azul."
"And what if someone recognizes me? Like from the orphanage?"
"No one will recognize you! You're a lonely orphan!"
I tipped my head. He was right. "So what shall we do first?"
"We meet your long-lost father."
