An Afternoon Picnic

The sun stabbed at my eyes. A soft petal brushed against my face. I blinked my eyes open to a rose petal heart carefully placed on the pillow next to me. Two roses lay in the middle of the petal heart. I knew Colbin had put them there, but after yesterday morning, and meeting Fredrich, I wasn't sure how I felt about him. What I felt around Fredrich was something completely different than what I felt around Colbin. I sighed and brushed the petals into a drawer. Then I arranged the complete roses into a vase of daisies. I grabbed a fresh dress and got ready. A knock sounded at the door.

"In a minute!" I yelled, pulling my hair into a messy bun.

"Hey, Leyna." I heard Fredrich's voice outside my door.

"Hey, Fredrich!" I called, opening the door.

"I want to take you somewhere special this morning."

He led me to the stables, where Ivory waited. She was saddled up, but undecorated. A bouquet of lilies and roses laid on her saddle.

"Did you do this for me?" I asked.

"That's not all, come on, mount up."

He led me deeper into the forest than I would have imagined even the real Princess going. The sun rose high above us as Ivory followed the silver dapple stallion Fredrich rode. He told me jokes and riddles to keep my spirits up on the ride.

"Fredrich, it's high noon. Shouldn't we stop?" I asked. The stallion turned a corner, but once Ivory turned the same corner, Fredrich had disappeared. "Fredrich, where did you go?"

A hand emerged from some foliage. "Take my hand"

I dismounted and took the hand, leading Ivory behind me. Fredrich pulled me through the foliage into a magical clearing. The sun streamed in, turning green as it pushed through the trees. A checked picnic blanket, with a banquet laid out on it, was spread out at the base of the weeping willow they stood in.

"Oh, Fredrich, this is beautiful!" I exclaimed, my eyes welling up with tears. I didn't think Colbin would ever do this for me.

"I made it just for you." he smiled.
