A Piece of You
BEFORE THE HERSHEY MELTS, you have to return.
Grace Jimenez is a class topper.
But everytime she receives a medal, the writer in her, dies.
So when she heard about these chocolates that allow you to change something in your life, Grace decided to give it one try.
"Ano'ng flavor, hija?"
Napatingin siya sa kaherang palagi na lamang siyang inuusig ng tingin. "'Yung… original na lang po siguro."
As soon as she received it, she sat by the table and started eating the chocolate.
What if I never come back?
She was frustrated. Grace stood up and decided to throw the Hershey's away, thinking that the myth couldn't be true at all.
But the moment she stepped out of the store, her environment changed.
Leaving the Hershey's behind, she saw her younger self work hard for all the achievements she would soon be rewarded.
Her college self never restrained from anything and thinking this was their last phase in studying, she kept working and aiming for excellence.
She rejected all leisure invitations and spent time in cafeterias only to study for their upcoming board exam in which she aced it.
Later on, Grace was there — standing in front of her.
She was astounded when her other self began to shrink… until she aged back to six, when Grace was still fond of drawings and coloring books.
Her younger self walked up to her, crossing the boundary between them… and hugged her tight as if her present self needed that care.
"I'm so proud of you," she spoke to herself.
Then younger Grace went back to her study and continued to scribble the notes she will be needing for her first story draft.
"I see…" she spoke. "I have always wanted to become a writer."
Tears began to cascade down her cheeks until her shoulders started shaking.
"I love you," she spoke in a very low manner. "No one really told you that, so I'm telling you now..."
She was given the chance to change one thing in her life, but she chose not to tamper with her past.
She closed her eyes and whispered. "Please, take me back."
And when she opened them, she was facing the old lady from the counter with her melting Hershey's on the table.
Her grandmother who is also the cashier to that convenience store, spoke to her in such a way that she laughed.
"I cannot believe you actually believed those lies…" she said.
"You told me this store was selling chocolates that—"
Her grandmother held her hand and smiled. "Why didn't you chase your dream back then?"
She shook her head and lowered her sight instead.
"It's never too late," her grandmother said. "Write for me, hija…"
Grace was given a canvas and a pen by the only person who believed in her, so she took them and stared at her. "What am I supposed to write?"
"Write me a piece of you," she said. "Let me read something, before the Hershey melts…"
