The Morning Before the Fall
I woke up before the sun rose. I went through one of my smaller bags for the pie I baked the day before, checking that I wrapped it well and preserved.
Jack stirred in his sleep and sat up. "What's going on?"
I pulled out the pie. "I was just checking on the pie I made for your mom."
Jack put on his vest. "You made a pie for my mom."
"Yeah. You said her favorite was cherry right?"
"Yeah." Jack walked to me. "She loves cherry." He placed his hand on the rags that protected the pie. "It's not even warm."
"That's because I preserved it." I kissed his cheek. "We can rewarm it in her oven. You think she'll let me?"
Jack smiled. "I'm sure she will. It's not like your destroy her oven." He yawned and stretched. "Let's get this to her. She'll be thrilled to have it."

Jack smiled at me as we turned the corner to his house. "I'm very sad to give you this news, but, uhm..."
I blinked with a gaping mouth. "What?"
"It's my sister's turn to spend time with me."
"Oh." I lightly nudged his shoulder with mine. "I'll try not to be jealous. I want to spend time with your mom anyway."
"Trying to steal my mom from me?" Jack laughed as his sister opened the door.
"Jack!" She called and ran toward us. "Molly."
"Hey." Jack picked up his sister and whirled around. "You're excited to see me."
She held onto Jack. "I wanted you to finish telling me the story about the girl that lost her slipper."
"I thought mom would finish telling you that story." He opened the door more to his house.
"Yeah, but mom changed the names and everything. I thought you'd change the ending."
Jack laughed as he put his sister down, knowing he practically changed the entire story. He didn't even call it Cinderella. He named it the Girl Who Lost Her Slipper. "I would have. Hi, mom."
"Hi, Jack. Hi, Molly."
I waved. "Hi, Mrs. Frost. I brought your favorite pie."
Mrs. Frost wiped her hands on a rag. "Molly, you didn't."
"She did." Jack nodded.
Jack's sister gasped in excitement. "That means she brought my favorite pie too!"
I blinked, and Jack whispered, "It's the same as my mom's favorite."
"Awesome." I laughed.
Mrs. Frost smiled. "Seems they brought my favorite pie and soon-to-come grandchildren."
I was gaping as I blinked. Jack was froze with a gaping mouth.
"Oh, so you did."
"No!" Jack shook his head vigorously. "We didn't do anything like that last night! We just brought pie! No kids! We were just hanging out."
Jack's sister tilted her head. "Do anything like what? What's going on?"
"Are you sure, Jack?" Mrs. Frost looked at me.
"We didn't!" I glanced at Jack and her several times. "We didn't."
Jack nodded. "Not yet."
I froze with an obvious blush and gaping mouth.
"Jackson." Mrs. Frost rose a brow.
"What?" Jack laughed. "Our wedding is soon. That's what I mean by yet. It's going to happen."
"What's going to happen?" Jack's sister asked.
Mrs. Frost laughed. "I was only teasing, but now I know when I'll have grandchildren."
"I thought you always knew," Jack said.
She laughed again as she headed to the table with a knife to cut the pie.
"Mom." Jack's sister sat at the table. "Can Jack take me ice-skating?"
"I thought Jack and Molly were going to spend time together today." Mrs. Frost cut the pie.
"I have to make time for my favorite sister," Jack laughed.
"I'm your only sister."
"Even better. I'll take her ice-skating."
I smiled at Mrs. Frost. "And I'll help you around the house."
Mrs. Frost nodded. "Okay."
"Yay!" Jack's sister ran into her room and ran back out with two pairs of skates. "Let's go!" She gave Jack a pair and began dragging Jack out the door. He threw the pair of skates over his shoulder.
Jack laughed lightly as they got closer to the door. "See you later Molly. You too, Mom."
Mrs. Frost walked to the door. "Be careful."
Jack laughed as his sister pulled him out the door. "We will."
I stood by Mrs. Frost as the two walked away.
"He's going to make a fine father some day."
"Yes, he is."
Mrs. Frost looked at me with soft eyes. "And you're going to make wonderful pies for them."
I blinked and looked at her.
Mrs. Frost smiled. "I already tasted a piece of your pie. It's really good."
"But we didn't warm it."
"Pies a dessert. You can have it warm or cold." She smiled and tilted her head to the table. "Let's get inside."
I nodded and she closed the door behind me."Let's have some pie."
I sat down at the table, and she did the same. I served myself a slice of pie. "How have you been?"
Mrs. Frost laughed lightly. "Too relaxed. Whenever Jack is gone everything gets quiet. I complain that it's silent and I play with my daughter. She likes playing hide and seek with me. She says she feels she hides better than when she plays the game with Jack."
I swallowed my bite of pie. "You do a lot for your kids."
"As will you." She smiled. "You know, since you and Jack will get married, you can sleep here whenever you'd like."
I paused and smiled. "Thank you... for everything."
"No. Thank you for everything you've done for him and his sister."
I paused. "I... I haven't--"
"You have. She wants to be like you. She wants to be as generous and brave as you were for that boy you took care of."
"That was only once. I'd do it again, but children here don't get lost everyday."
Mrs. Frost nodded. "But it's what you did for the boy. Not many girls your age would have done the same."
I smiled as I looked at my pie. "I guess Jack really does--"
"Jack? Jack didn't tell me anything."
"His sister."
She nodded. "Who do you think he constantly wanted to play with at the fenced area?"
I took another bite of my pie.
"Every time I look at Jack and his sister, I see nothing but bright futures. It's the same with you." She smiled.
I swallowed. "Thank you." I paused. "What exactly to do you see in your children's futures?"
"For my daughter, a good husband that will protect her from anything harmful and treats her like a princess. That's mainly because I know Jack won't let her marry unless he is exactly like that."
I nodded as I took another bite.
"And for Jack..." She played with a piece of her pie as she nodded to herself, "I believe Jack is destined for something great."
