New arrival

The next morning I ran to Jack's house. I was ready to avenge myself in tag. I wasn't going to have Jack win two games more than me. Jack was smart, but not smart enough to duck and roll from my new tactics. I knocked on the door to his house, and Jack opened the door.

"Tag!" I reached forward but couldn't reach him.

Jack grinned as I pulled my arm back with a frown. "I can't play today."

I paused. "Why not? You promised we could."

"And I wouldn't break a promise unless something else was important." Jack looked behind him then back at me. "My sister is here today."

I blinked. "What?"

Jack's father stepped into the room. "You must be Molly. Come in, please."

I slowly nodded and walked in as Jack closed the door behind me.

Jack's dad let out a small laugh. "Jack, didn't know his sister would arrive today, but then again none of us did. You can forgive him right?"

I nodded slowly, gazing at Jack's tall dad. He reminded me of santa with his brown attire. I paused and stared at Jack's father. "Is she here?"

Jack laughed. "She got here a few hours ago."

My brows furrowed. "Wait. What?"

Jack's father smiled. "Come see her. You'll see what we mean." He led us into another room where Jack's mother was lying with a baby in her arms. I paused as she turned to us.

Jack's mother smiled at me. "You must be Jack's new friend, Molly. He's told me about you."

I smiled and curtsied. "Nice to meet you."

She let out a small laugh. "Nice to meet you too. Would you like to see her?"

"I wanna hold her first!" Jack stepped forward. "I'm her brother now! I should... first." Jack looked down with a smile.

Jack's mother laughed. "Of course you can." She carefully handed Jack his new sister and sat up on the bed.

"Dearest," Jack's father stood by her side, helping her stand.

"I'm quite all right." She smiled. "I just want to get the shepherd's pie out so Jack and Molly can eat it. You forgot to do it."

Jack's father laughed.

"Th-thank you." I smiled. "For the pie."

She smiled and walked out the room with Jack's father helping her out.

"She looks like my mom." Jack grinned and stared at the baby. "She even has the beauty mark under her right eye." He laughed.

I stood beside him and looked at the infant. Her brown eyes were big and seemed glued to Jack's as she smiled with no teeth. "She has the same brown eyes as you."

Jack nodded. The baby touched Jack's hair and his eye. Jack laughed as he held her a little lower. "I think she likes me."

I laughed. "Are you going to play tricks on her like you played tricks on me yesterday?"

Jack grinned. "It's what I do best. And as a big brother, I can protect her like my dad can." Jack turned to me. "Here hold her. I want her to like you" Jack carefully handed me his new sister.

I held her and moved my head back as she lightly tugged my hair. I laughed. "I don't think she likes me."

Jack laughed. "Nonsense, that just means she wants more of you. She almost did that to me, remember?" He stared at his sister for a moment, taking her back in his arms. "My mother worked hard for the past month getting that blanket right for her."

I paused. "Really? Why?"

Jack paused and looked away with furrowed brows. He shrugged. "It's nice to give the people you love something you make. It'll be the first thing that's hers."

"But it's special when you get stuff from your mom and dad."

Jack slowly nodded. "But I've seen people who are not mothers or fathers give each other things."

"Do they love each other?" My brows furrowed.

"I guess." Jack looked at his sister. "Why else would they make something for the other person?"

"But how do you know you love someone who isn't a mother, father, sister, or brother?"

Jack paused again with furrowed brows. "Maybe... maybe they know they love each other because they smile when they see that other person."

I blinked. "Like when we looked at each other yesterday?"

Jack nodded. "Yeah, something like that. But..." Jack paused as his gaze locked with mine, "something only they know about is there, I think. I always see people smile when they see each other, and then they give each other the gift they made."

"Okay, that sounds true." I laughed. "But we're friends."

"Yeah." Jack smiled at me, and I smiled at him.

"Jack, Molly, you can come get some Shepherd's pie."

We both walked into the room with a small table. I smiled and sat where my plate was. I paused as my eyes fell on the baby. "Mrs. Frost, how long did it take you to make that blanket?"

"Oh. Well, all together, it took me about... I don't remember. It took a very long time. I'm sorry I don't remember, Molly."

A very long time?

I nodded. "It's okay. Can I take this to my home?" I pointed to my pie. "I'll bring back the plate."

Jack's mother paused. "I suppose so. Why?"

I hopped off my seat with my plate of Shepherd's pie. "I have to get started on something. It's going to take a very long time." I ran to the door. "I'll bring back the plate and everything tomorrow. I promise." I closed the door behind me and ran to my house, careful not to drop any of my pie.

My mother's eyes widened as I ran through the door. "Molly, what is the meaning of this?"

I placed my plate on the table and ran to my mother with a smile on my face. "Can you teach me how to make a blanket?"

My mother paused. Her brows furrowed. "I suppose I can. I do have more materials than I know what to do with."

My mother brought out all sorts of materials in a basket, and we began making blankets. When we were half-way through, she looked at my blue blanket. "Molly, that is very beautiful."

"Really?" My brows furrowed at the blanket. "I can't even tell that it's a fish. It's pretty small too."

She paused. "Well, everyone will think it's a beautiful ...dishrag. Why did you want to make a blanket anyway?"

I smiled as I continued making my blanket. "Jack's sister was born today. I found out it's nice to make things for other people."

She let out a small laugh. "Who is this blanket for?"

I paused, thinking of Jack. "I don't... know... Maybe for a baby brother I might have some day." I smiled at my mother.

She shook her head laughing. "Maybe someday."

Once we finished our blankets I frowned. I couldn't even tell what was on my blanket. It wasn't even big enough for a blanket. The picture was so distorted that I didn't like it. And the colors were everywhere in no particular order. I looked at my mother's blanket. It was beautiful with all sorts of colorful birds flying around on it.

I stared at her blanket for a moment longer. "Why isn't mine as good as yours?"

My mother laughed. "This is your first time making a blanket. You'll get better as you make more. Not everyone can make a blanket their first time."

The door opened and my father walked in. My eyes fell dead on his green scarf.

"Hello, Molly." He smiled.

I pointed at his scarf. "How do I make that thing around father's neck, mom?"
