24 What the hell...
24 WHAT THE HELL..
As soon as Segun dropped to the ground, I saw the fear in Tunde's eyes. I could tell that reality had just hit him. We were all shocked and afraid but my classmates made things look too serious. "Tunde has killed somebody o" I heard a girl shout while I made my way to where Tunde stood looking down at an unconscious Segun.
"Do something!" I yelled at Tunde who was still in a state of shock.
"What do you want us to do?!" Yvonne yelled back at me, "I'm going to get a teacher" she scurried off like a wet rat.
Tunde still hadn't said anything and I had no idea what to do. I didn't even know what was wrong with him. "He's still breathing" Tunde managed to say and before I could reply, Jay approached us with a bucket of water and before I could blink, he emptied the bucket on an unconscious Segun.
Surprisingly, Segun had jolted up like someone who just woke from a nightmare same time some teachers stormed into the classroom. Segun was breathing heavily while everyone else sighed in relief.
"Thank God, you're fine" Yvonne rushed to her wet brother and embraced him.
Segun and Tunde were taken to the principal's office and everyone else couldn't keep their mouth shut. We didn't have classes that morning thanks to the chaos earlier.
At the end of the day, what I really wanted to know was the cause of the fight but unfortunately, we had other things to worry about.
"What you did was dangerous" Miss Helen scolded Tunde, "You don't just pour water on an unconscious person" she had earlier approached us to enlighten Jay on the different ways what he did could have gone wrong. With the corner of my eyes, I could see Yvonne cornered by the Government and Physics teacher. She seemed to be trying to explain something to them. No doubt it was about the fight.
"With all due respect ma, I still saved his life" Jay said to Miss Helen.
"Saved his life? Who said he was dying in the first place?" Miss Helen asked. Tunde walked into the classroom and all eyes were on him. Some students had tried to approach him but he didn't spare anyone a glance. He grabbed his bag and left the class.
I excused myself from Miss. Helen and Jay and walked towards the exit of the classroom. I could feel Yvonne's eyes on me but I didn't turn back to look at her.
I ran down the stairs to catch up with Tunde but he already left the building and I had to run after him. "Tunde" I called out same time he turned around to see who was running after him. He stopped and waited for me.
"What happened?" I asked after I'd gotten close enough. He looked angry and frustrated. "Where are you going?"
"Home" was his only response before he diverted his gaze to the floor.
"What? Why?" I asked and without saying anything he pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and gave it to me. I couldn't read it's contents but I already knew what it was. "He suspended you" I wasn't asking. I was simply stating the obvious fact.
"Two weeks" said Tunde, "Turns out the man has a bunch of suspension letters in his drawer and all he needed to do was just write my name on it" for some reason we both chuckled at that.
"What are you going to tell your mother?" I asked knowing fully well how strict his mother was. She didn't take nonsense and it only took me one visit to their house to realize that.
"They already called her and told her everything so I'm... I'm dead" he looked down to the ground. I didn't know what to say. I wanted to ask the reason for their fight but I didn't. I couldn't bring myself to do it. "Take this" he gave me a different, smaller piece of paper with a number scribbled on it, "Aisha called me. She's back with her parents and she wanted me to give you that number but I didn't know how..." he trailed off. I understood why.
"Oh my God! Are you serious?" I exclaimed with excitement.
"Yeah. I haven't had the time to go and see her but I guess now I have enough time" he said.
"I can't believe this. She's finally back" I said with glee.
"Yeah, she sounded happy on the phone" Tunde gave me weary smile. "I should go before they chase me out" he turned around and began walking towards the gate.
"Hey," I said making him turn around, "Maybe we can go and see her together"
He nodded, "Call me when you're ready"
I stood there and watched him leave and until he was out of sight, I don't turn around to leave.
Where does this leave us? I wondered. We weren't exactly the best of friends and we hadn't been for some time and yet we were going to meet Aisha. On the other hand, I was delighted, excited, happy, grateful, thankful that Aisha was okay. Although I didn't know that for sure.
I went back to class only to be summoned by the principal. I'd glared at the junior student who had come to get me but I couldn't get angry at her, she was only a messenger.
"Good morning, sir" I'd greeted the principal whose name I'd forgotten.
"There's nothing good about the morning, Rachael. The DSP nearly killed his classmate this morning" he stated before dropping his pen and finally looking up at me same time he removed his glasses. "Do you know why I called you here?"
"No, sir" I replied.
"Well, I called you for a number of reasons." he said with a smile. "Please sit down." he offered.
"Thank you." I said before taking a seat opposite him.
"First and foremost, I need you to tell your guardian that the prefect that assaulted your brother has been suspended." he said. "Mrs. Jacobs called me this morning and let's just say... She's not someone I'd like to get on their bad side. So, somehow, what happened today gave me enough reason to suspend Tunde and when he returns, we will discuss whether he is still fit for the position of DSP."
"Okay, sir" that was all I could say.
"Now, I've also come to find out that your guardian isn't the one taking care of your school fees?" the principal asked.
"Uhm... Yes" I thought of a way to put it. "A distant relative sponsors my brother and I." I informed him.
"Yes! That was exactly what I was told but then, I further got to know that the distant relative you speak of is your grandfather?" I had no idea why he was asking since he already knew everything.
"Yes, I suppose."
"Rachael, your grandfather is Graham Marshall?" he principal widened his eyes in surprise.
I gulped down, "Yes"
"Graham Marshall, as in the CEO of Marshall Industries?" he exclaimed.
"I don't know" I lied. I'd once googled him and he was right.
"How could you not know?" the principal asked. "I was surprised that you and your brother were the only students who had cleared their fees for all the semesters till SS 3 meaning you owe the school nothing!" said the principal.
"I didn't know..."
"I went ahead and made some research and discovered your fees were paid from an account with the name, Graham Marshall" the principal kept blabbing, "I kept wondering if it was the same Graham Marshall of Marshall industries because I once worked there. And you know what? You look a lot like your grandfather and so does your brother." At this point I was a little afraid and confused.
"Uhm... I don't know what to say..." I mumbled.
"I'm the granddaughter to a multi billionaire — that's what you should be saying!" the principal laughed and I fake-chuckled. It was safe to say the man had lost it.
"Sir, I need to go back to my Chemistry class..." I lied.
"Of course, you can go" he finally let me go and I nearly ran out of the office.
I walked through the empty hallway absent mindedly. I couldn't help but give much thought to what the principal had said. It made me wonder why I wasn't living a big life with my grandfather or why he never bothered to contact me directly.
My thoughts were interrupted by some hushed echoes of voices. It sounded like an argument and it was coming from the empty music room which was still under construction. Definitely, the voices sounded familiar but I couldn't put faces to those voices so I did what I could do best.
The room had no door so it was left ajar making it easy for me to peep.
"Segun, you are unbelievable!" Yvonne exclaimed, "So you were pretending?"
"Well, those acting classes finally paid off." said Segun with a smirk. He was putting on the football team jersey since his uniform was wet. "Too bad that idiot poured water on me and I had to get up."
"I can't believe this." said Yvonne. "You did this just to get back at Tunde"
"I told him to stay away from you but he wouldn't listen." said Segun before grabbing Yvonne's hand, "You are mine!" he screamed murder.
"Segun, we can't do this anymore. I thought we agreed on that" Yvonne squeaked.
"That's bullshit!" Segun explained. "Yvonne you want me and you know it" he grabbed her butt and pulled her closer.
"Segun... For the love of God... We could get caught... Dad would disown..." Yvonne was quickly interrupted by Segun's lips locking with hers. He kissed her passionately and she returned the kiss.
They were supposed to be siblings.
