Then
I COULDN'T TELL anyone how long I've been sitting in this car. I think it's been days. That's how long it feels at least when I finally feel flashlights shine into the backseat.
I'm not sure who is out there, or if they're some sort of search party for us, but somehow I've made it out of the car and am face down on the cold, wet grass. It had rained about an hour ago I think. I only noticed because that seemed to be the only thing to take me away from the silence of the car. Mia stopped talking hours ago.
"Sir, can you hear me?"
I am still face down in the grass. I can't move, I can't speak. All I can seem to do is just sit here and shiver from the dampness, my mind jumping to my blood stained pants. Will the rain take the blood away? I hope so.
In seconds I feel hands pull my body onto a stiff board. I'm strapped down and being carried up what seems to be a cliff? A hill? I don't know, but it's steep. There's a bunch of red and blue lights flashing everywhere when we reach the top, the brightness seeming to almost blind me. I haven't seen light in hours. I'm so used to the darkness. To the silence.
"Oh my god!" I hear my mom shout from a distance before she is by my side. My eyes dart from her to the people carrying me. I want to speak! I want to say something, but my body just remains limp. "Oh, my poor baby. You're going to be okay. My sweet boy." Now she's practically convulsing with sobs, her tears falling onto my face.
Maybe Mia is still alive? She started to shiver after she couldn't speak to me anymore, and I managed to take off my jacket to give her. I passed it over to her, but I don't know if she grabbed it. Is she warm now? Maybe she just couldn't talk because she was scared.
I hear my mom talking to my dad I think on the phone to tell him that we're going to the hospital. She doesn't say anything about Mia. She doesn't say if she's in an ambulance behind me. She just climbs into the back by my side and grips my hand tighter than I've ever felt.
Now
I'm growing tired of spending the same nights with the same, boring individuals. It seems as if nobody has anything better to do on a Saturday night than get wasted or smoke some weed, and I'm starting to get nauseous from the clouds of smoke that are consuming this house.
Fuck. I don't honestly know what time it is, but everywhere I look it's crowded. I'm hardly able to get down the stairs from the swarms of new freshmen just dying to get a taste of what a college party is like. It's their first weekend on campus. I thought they'd want to get settled in before classes start up on Monday, but instead they're acting like a bunch of horny high schoolers.
Four boys are cheering as they watch a couple of girls go in for a group kiss. One of the girls spills her drink onto the floor, causing me to groan in frustration from the mess I'll probably have to clean up later. I am the sober one after all.
"Xavier!" Rodney shouts, raising a red solo cup up towards me. He's so shitfaced right now. "Come on, man! We're playing strip poker!"
It feels so hot in here. The leather from my jacket is sticking to my skin, the warmth rising to my neck until it reaches my face. I'm itching for a drink. I'm craving one. I want to have fun like everyone else is here, but if I allow myself to do that then I'll let myself down. It sounds stupid, but I've never stayed sober for this long.
I quickly shake my head at Rodney and watch as he rolls his eyes at me and runs his hand through his curly blonde hair. If it weren't for his sense of humor then he wouldn't even be a part of this fraternity. He's overweight, acne plastered all over his face with big, thick glasses perched on his nose.
The cool air feels incredible once I step out onto the front steps of the house. It's not cold, but the wind is enough to give me some relief from the pressure of the crowd.
I keep thinking that I'll be fine around big parties. I keep thinking that I can turn away a drink no problem. But when everyone's got a cup in their hand with the music blaring it's difficult to say no.
I should find someone to have sex with. That's what always cures this feeling. There's so many sloppy girls right now that are dying to get a taste of a seasoned college boy. So many innocent freshmen.
"What the fuck are you doing out here?" Dion closes the front door behind him and grabs a cigarette from his pocket. "It's loud as shit in there."
"You can say that again." I mutter.
I should tell him the truth; I should just let him know that I'm struggling tonight more than I have in a long time. I mean, he has been my best friend since my junior year of high school. If anyone could sense the vulnerability right now it would be him.
I decide not to tell him, sticking my hand out so that he'll give me a cigarette too. Probably not the smartest choice, but this is better than turning to alcohol, or worse...
"I'm pretty sure Rodney is actually going to get laid tonight." He smirks, blowing a ring of smoke into the air. "I swear, freshmen girls are no joke. They will fuck anything."
I let out an actual laugh as I feel the nicotine start to kick in. Being out here with Dion is already making me feel a bit better. He's getting me back to the funny asshole that I want to be tonight. How I usually am.
Before I'm able to respond, a blonde girl is stumbling up the sidewalk as her brunette friend is trying to help. It's comical in all honesty, so I tilt my head to the side and flick my cigarette as I watch the blonde's dress continue to ride farther and farther up her thighs.
"Can someone help?" The brunette asks. Her eyes meet mine but quickly dart to the pavement towards her friend when she lets out a groan. Her voice is irritated, and that only makes me smile more.
"Do we look like chaperones?" I ask. "It's not our fault your friend is fucked up."
"She's not my friend. She's my new roommate." She shoots back icily. "We just met tonight."
Dion and I begin to laugh at the two of them struggling, and we can't help but begin to laugh harder, so hard that we're holding onto our stomachs when the blonde throws up onto the grass. The brunette is having a hell of a night.
I don't think I've seen this girl around campus before. I would have remembered her if I had. She's got this tight red mini dress on that's hugging her curves in all of the right places. Her thighs look thick and voluptuous as they press together when she crouches beside her friend, and I feel my pants grow tighter at the thought of those thighs wrapped around me. Looks like I've met my conquest for the night.
"I'm guessing you two are new?" I arch my eyebrow up at her as I trace my fingertips on my jawline.
When she looks at me it seems as if she couldn't be more annoyed, and that's unusual for me. Normally girls would love to talk to me. Normally it would take only twenty minutes of conversation before my head's between their thighs.
"Nope. We had literature together last semester, Xavier." She smiles, a sarcastic one, and holds her friends hair back.
I highly doubt that I would forget her. I don't understand how I'd forget a face like that. Especially with an ass like that.
"Oh." I frown, my conquest seeming to become more difficult. "Sorry, I-"
She interrupts me silently by waving her hand and rolling her eyes. "I get it. Grade A asshole, player of the year. It's hard to remember names."
Dion starts to erupt into laughter at the girl before he stomps his cigarette out onto the pavement. I do the same as him and crunch the ashes into the cracks of the concrete, honestly unsure of how to respond to this feisty girl. The things I'd like to do to that smart mouth right now are endless.
"Grade A asshole, huh?" I smirk and crouch down beside her and her friend. I catch her eyes with mine again, and I know that she's taken back by the dark brown that's staring straight at her. Girls have always told me that my eyes are my best feature. They aren't a normal brown. They're almost black, but they're intriguing at the same time.
"Yep." She nods, seeming unfazed by my attempt to get closer to her. "Since you're down here do you think you could actually fucking help and at least get her inside instead of being a horny prick?"
"I like her." Dion grins, opening up the front door. "You can put her upstairs. Second door on the right. That one's empty." He gives me a look as if to say good luck before he steps back into the party.
My tongue seems twisted, and it's never twisted. I can almost always come up with a comeback, but this time I'm finding myself searching for words to form together.
I help her lift her friend to her feet, wrapping the blonde's arm around her shoulder and the other around mine as we lead her inside the party. Everyone seems to be too drunk to notice us, and we both have to shove people to the side in order to get up the staircase.
"Christ." She seethes, elbowing a couple making out. "This is fucking ridiculous."
I open the door to the guest room with my elbow and we finally are able to set her friend down onto the bed, who is now completely passed out.
"How long have you guys been out?" I ask.
"Literally an hour. She only had four shots and got way too drunk. I mean, she told me she didn't party a lot, but I wasn't expecting this." She waves at her on the bed.
"Sounds like you've had a shit night." I shrug.
I'm trying to be compassionate here, I'm trying to be this nice guy that cares about her problems, but unfortunately the only thing my brain is focusing on is how good her tits look in that dress. I keep my eyes on hers though to seem polite, only catching glances when she looks away.
"Is it cool if I just sleep in here with her?" She asks. "No offense, but I don't know any of you, so I'm not going to leave her passed out in a room by herself."
"Uh, that's not really our style to fuck unconscious women, but suit yourself." I reply sarcastically. "If you actually want to get some sleep, my bedroom is on the third floor, first door on the left. It blocks out most of the noise. You're more than welcome there."
I am trying so hard to be nice. I normally don't waste this much time on girls. If I didn't have my answer within a couple of minutes then I'd move onto the next. But she's the most attractive girl I've seen in awhile, and the way she's got such an attitude is turning me on in a way I can't describe. I'm not giving up just yet.
"Right." She mocks, letting out a small giggle that's cuter than it should be. "I'll keep that in mind."
"What's so funny?" I ask.
"Do you think I'm stupid? I'm not going to sleep in your room tonight. I know what you're looking for, and I'm not interested."
She's more intriguing than I thought. It's like she's becoming a competition that I have to win now or something. Why doesn't she want to sleep with me? I don't get turned down often. Hardly ever.
"Are you a virgin?" I ask and quickly regret it when it comes out. I don't try to apologize for it though.
She arches an eyebrow up and rolls her eyes. "No." She replies. "Definitely not a virgin."
So she's slept around?
"A lesbian?" I press.
"Nope. I'm as straight as can be."
She's finding this conversation funny because the corners of her full lips that are painted with red lipstick are turning up into a smile. I notice the dimples come alive on her tan cheeks, the seams of my pants growing tighter by the second. She's fine as hell.
"Okay..." I trail off in confusion. "Then why-"
"Can I just not be interested?" She interrupts me, taking a step closer. "I get it. You've probably had almost every girl on this campus, but that doesn't mean you get to be a cocky fuck and assume that all women want you. I'm not looking for a one night stand tonight." She crosses her arms over her chest.
"Then what are you looking for?"
"Me, myself and I." She grins back. "I'm happy being single."
What an odd girl...
I brush off the hit she tries to throw at my ego and straighten my shoulders again, sending her a cocky grin. "Well, if you change your mind, I think you'll be very pleased. I'll be in my room if you need me."
"Don't hold your breath, Xavier."
She sends me a half-hearted wave, instructing me to go as I stand there with the grin still plastered to my face. I'm enjoying this game that we're having. I'm enjoying the chase. I'm enjoying actually meeting a girl that makes me work for it. This is going to be fun.
"I'll try not to...?" I ponder off to learn her name as well.
"Elena." She sighs and begins to push me out into the hallway, sending me one last final grin. "Have a nice night alone."
