Shower In A Waterfall

"We're here!" Lincoln exclaims as we turn onto the road with a sign for the campsite. I quickly grab my Polaroid and snap a picture of the sign. I smile as I place it next to the stolen fox postcard. I feel something tap my shoulder and I turn around.

"What did he say?" Daisy asks, one earbud dangling in her hand.

"We're here, silly goose," I respond with a shake of my head.

"Yay!" she yells and tears her earbuds out of her ear and turns her phone off. She looks out the window intently and I turn my body around. Lincoln pulls the car into the parking lot and parks it by Matthew's truck. I unclick my seatbelt before jumping out of my seat. My bones ache as I lean forward and stretch out my back and legs.

"Piggy back ride!" I pop my head up and see Daisy(looking like a spider may I add)hop onto Lincoln's back. I laugh and wish I could have captured that very strange looking moment on camera. He grabs the back of her legs to make sure she won't fall off, and he takes off sprinting in the parking lot. I run after them and attempt to jump on Daisy knowing it won't work. She slips off as Lincoln lets go and I catch her in my arms.

"My savior!" she exclaims as she stands up and falls back into my arms to hug me.

"You've been needing quite a bit of saving lately," I mention, thinking back to when she fell into the trunk of my car before we left.

"What can I say? I'm a clumsy duck," she says with a shrug of her shoulders as she begins walking backwards to the car. I smile before jogging after her. We all grab our bags, swinging backpacks on our shoulders and holding duffels or tents. Tires squeal on the pavement as a car comes speeding in the lot. I turn around and set my bag down with a quizzical look on my face.

"Hey," Matthew yells out the window of the car. Ava grumbles and rolls her eyes like usual.

"Hi," I greet, walking up to car. I place my arms on the open window as he talks to me.

"Where should I park?" he asks, gesturing to the fairly packed lot.

"I guess just next to us. You can help us carry the tents too." He nods and I step away before he drives away in order to turn around and park close to my car. I grab my duffel bag from the spot I'm assuming he will pull into and put it on top of my shoulder. I see Lincoln has finished pulling the chairs out of the trunk, and I grab one in my arms and hand one to Daisy. Matthew and Ava grab their things and soon we are off walking on the path to find Dave, Lincoln's "dad". He left Lincoln's mom soon after he was born when he found a better, younger, prettier wife. He is required by law to visit him once a month until he's 18.

"You sure you're up for this, Linc?" I whisper to him after tapping his arm with my chair. I had only met Dave once very briefly even though I've been Lincoln's friend since birth practically.

"Yeah. It should be good," he said with a small smile. I smiled to myself. I always admired his positivity.

"Ok." I slowed my pace and looked over my shoulder at Daisy. She was grinning and almost skipping as she was listening to music through her earbuds. I looked around at the nature, taking in the bright green leaves against the contrast of the deep brown trunks of the trees. Ahead of me, Matthew had picked a small purple flower and was putting in Ava's hair. She sheepishly smiled and hid her face from him. I grinned to myself. I knew this was going to be a good idea. I took my polaroid out of my duffel bag and snapped a picture of Ava and Matthew holding hands. You could faintly see the flower in her hair, the only sign of color in the picture. I tucked it inside my camera bag once it was done developing.

"Hey hey hey!" Daisy greeted as she came up to me on my right side and hugged me as well as she could with a camping chair in her arms.

"Hi!" I exclaimed before quickly taking a picture of Daisy goofily smiling at me. She laughed and jumped up and down happily. I handed the polaroid to her and she grinned. The picture ended up being blurry, but you could still see the outline of her face when she threw her head back and her big smile.

"I love it," she commented and handed it back to me. I nodded and put it with the other picture I had just taken. We walked on for a while together, chatting during some parts and staying silent in others. I looked up at the sky and noticed that it was getting darker. Just as I was about to say something, Ava turned around to look at me.

"Does anyone even know where we are going?" she asked, flopping her hands against her legs in exasperation.

"We should be there soon," I commented, looking towards Lincoln to help me out.

"Yeah, the map says we're only a few yards away." He looked up with confusion written on his face at the path in front of us.

"Camylle," Ava started, stopping in her path. I rolled my eyes and dropped my stuff.

"Don't 'Camylle' me. We're almost there so suck it up," I commanded. Lincoln bit his lip and looked toward me.

"I'm not so sure we're that close. We may have taken a wrong turn somewhere," he warily announced. Ava looked at me with a I-told-you-so look on her face and I sighed.

"It's okay. We'll find the campsite sooner or later," Daisy piped up from behind us all.

"I'd rather it be the former," Ava mumbled and sat down on a nearby bench. Matthew followed behind her like a puppy, and I sat down on the ground. Lincoln began pacing(what he does when he's trying to think) and Daisy plopped down next to me. I got my phone out and saw that there was no service. Daisy sat up and took out the ponytail in my hair. I shook my hair out and let her happily braid it. Lincoln stopped in his tracks, and I smiled knowing that he was close to figuring it out. I took my notebook out of my backpack and slipped the pencil out of the spiral. A wind blew fallen leaves toward me, and I snatched one and set it underneath my paper to do some rubbings.

"I think I've figured it out," Lincoln announced to the group.

"Finally," Ava sighed and stood up from the bench with Matthew. I let the leaf float away and gently slip my sketchbook back into my bag and throw it over my shoulder.

"We just need to turn around, walk until we see the sign for the Oak Leaf Trail, and turn onto that path. After that we should be there in less than half a mile," Lincoln proudly said. We nodded and gathered our things before beginning the revised walk.

...

"Lincoln!" His little sister came running over from where she was playing with a stick and engulfed him in a hug. He scooped her up and swung her around in a circle before setting her back down gently.

"Hi Livy!" I greeted.

"Cam cam!" She exclaimed and latched onto my leg. "And Dandelion!" she looked up at Daisy.

"Daisy," she corrected Livy. Livy giggled and ran back into the tent. A tall man stepped away from the fire he was tending and began walking towards us.

"Hi," Lincoln forcedly said.

"Hey, son." Dave grinned and patted him on the back. Lincoln put on a fake smile but stiffened his body.

"Where's Ben?" I butted in, trying to lighten the mood.

"Back in the tent," Dave answered. "Ben, come see your brother!" The tent rustled and a boy with very similar hair to Lincoln's and dark eyes stepped out. His eyes widened and he trotted over to us and hugged Lincoln.

"How have you been?" He asked his younger brother. I let them talk for a bit and wandered around to find Livy sitting on a picnic table with her short legs dangling off. Ava and Matthew had found a spot by the fire, and Daisy followed shortly behind them.

"What are you doing?" I asked Livy, sitting down next to her.

"Daddy told me not to get in between Ben and Lincoln. He said I'm not really related to them so I should leave them alone." I frown. I always knew Dave was a bad father, but why would he keep Lincoln's sister--I mean I know they are half-siblings, but still--away from him.

"Well that's not true. You are just as equally related to each of them as they are to each other." She looks up at me with a confused look and I smile and hug her. "Point is, you are both of their sisters and you can talk and play with them however much you want."

"Really?" she asks. I nod and she grins as big as she can. "Lincoln Lincoln Lincoln!" she shouts as she jumps off the table and sprints full force towards her brothers. I sigh happily and lean my elbows on the back of the bench Daisy is lounging on.

"Want to set up the tents?" I ask. She turns to face me and smiles sheepishly.

"Do I really want to set them up..." she ponders. I gently slap her hand and grab it to drag her over to where we set our bags down.

"Now let's find the instructions..." I trail off, digging in the bag to attempt to find something telling me how to put this tent together.

"Cam Cam!" a little voice shouts, and I turn around to see Livy skipping toward me. "Roast me a marshmallow?" I smile and scoop her up in my arms and rest her on my hip.

"I have to put up this tent Livy boo," I say sadly while bopping her on the nose.

"I'll do that while you get me a marshmallow," she compromises. She slides out of my arms and grabs the cloth part of the tent in her arms and plops it down on the gravel. Lincoln comes running towards us, and he lifts his sister up into the air and spins her around like an airplane.

"Lincoln!" she squeals. He positions her so she is sitting on his shoulders and she holds on to his hair like a horse's mane.

"We were going to set up the tents," I say to Lincoln.

"Cool. We can go on a hike after if you want," he suggests. I nod while attempting to unfold the tent with Daisy's help. He walks away with Livy giggling on his back, and I grab one of the poles and put it in the top of the tent. After a while, we've finished putting up our tent and surprisingly, Ava and Matthew have set theirs up too.

"Are you teenagers going on a walk?" Dave asks with a grin on his face. Ben and Livy are playing inside their tent, and the rest of us are gathered around the fire.

"Yeah. We can head out now," Lincoln says. I look around the circle and see everyone nodding in agreement, and we stand up and start on a path. I pull the sleeves of my sweatshirt farther down on my wrists and cross my arms across my stomach. A light breeze flutters over us, and I'm pretty sure I visibly shiver. Us Californians are spoiled by our warm weather that whenever it gets cold, we all freeze. A warm arm collects me in an embrace and I turn to my left to see who it is. Lincoln smiles at me, rubbing his hand up and down my arm as an attempt to warm me up. I look ahead and see that Daisy has stopped to tie her shoe, and I lean down and tap her on the arm.

"You're it!" I yell, running as far away from her as I can while still holding Lincoln's hand in mine. She pops up with a determined look on her face and sprints toward us. "No tag backs!" I shout behind me. She stops in her tracks before turning around and running back to where Ava and Matt are lagging behind.

"You're it!" Daisy screams and takes off running back our way.

"I'm not playing!" she shouts back with an angry expression.

"Too bad," I announce. "Everyone's playing." She does a little stomp with her foot and tags Matthew half heartedly.

"You're it," she mocks with a roll of her eyes. He runs forward and the three of us scatter around the woods, jumping over logs and hiding behind thick trees. I even see Ava attempt to camouflage herself into a pile of leaves. Matthew catches Lincoln, and he sprints toward me, and I know I'll never be able to outrun him but I still try to anyway. I hop over some brush and back onto the solid earth path and jog away, my heart beating incredibly fast. He slows his pace as he sees me doubled over, and he sets his hand on my back.

"You okay?" he asks. I stand up a little to look at him and see a concerned look on his face.

"You're it!" I yell, tossing a pile of mud I had picked up since all the soil was wet at him. He stands there dumbfounded before coming to his senses and grabbing a handful of mud and throwing it back at me, of course, with better aim than me since he does play baseball. I shriek as it splatters across my back and I run to try to escape his deadly throws. I turn around to see if he's coming, but my foot slips and I go tumbling down a slight hill. I shriek as the trees flash across my vision and dirt and grass fly into my mouth, not to mention the mud I was rolling through. The hill levels out, and gradually I stop moving in circles. I sit up and brush my hair back from where it is stuck on my face.

"Ugh," I comment as mud from my arm rubs off on my face. I glance at my surroundings and see that I've rolled into a giant swamp area that is practically all mud.

"I think she's down here!" A voice I recognize as Daisy's yells. She comes into my view as well as the rest of the group, and Lincoln immediately rushes down the hill and runs through the mud to me. He engulfs me in a hug, and I wrap my arms around him after a while. Over his shoulder I see the others make their way down carefully.

"I thought you were gone," he whispers in my ear, and I smile for a second before frowning. Does he think I'm that fragile? At least he cares I guess.

"I'm okay," I answer. He pulls back and everyone else gathers around me.

"Should we go back to the campsite?" Ava suggests, staying out of the way of the mud. An idea pops in my head, and I grin to myself.

"Hang on a minute. I think I lost my shoe," I announce.

"What shoe?" Daisy asks as she knows pretty much my whole closet.

"A brown leather boot." I turn to my left and grab some mud in my hands and look over my shoulder. I fling the mud at Ava who's bent over at the edge of where the mud starts. She immediately pops up and turns to face me with her mouth wide open. I grin and she picks up a some mud herself and hurls it at me.

"Mud fight!" Matthew screams from the sidelines, and he jumps into the mud and rubs it on Daisy's leg. She retaliates and plops some on his hair while he throws some at me. I shriek as I attempt to run out of the way but start falling over. Ava tries to help me steady myself, but my momentum pulls her down with me and we fall on top of each other. She pushes me off with a vengeance and I go sprawling towards Lincoln. I grab his hand and pull him to the ground along with Daisy who is next to him. Mud is spread all over my face, and I wipe it off my eyes and fling it at Daisy. She turns to face me and jumps on me. She grabs my arms and wrestles against me. I flip her over and climb on top of her, but she shoves me to the side. I stand up and turn around just in time to see Ava hurdling mud at my head and I duck. I pop back up and more mud splatters on my back. I spin on my heels to see all four of the others staring at me with handfuls of mud. I lean down and grab two myself.

"Go!" Lincoln announces. They all throw their mud at me at the same time, and I fall backwards into the swamp. I attempt to toss some back at them, but they run over to me and I grab Lincoln and Ava's arms and pull them down alongside me. Matthew and Daisy run to try to rescue them, but I grab Daisy by the ankle and she comes tumbling down with Matthew next to her. I laugh as they sit up in the thick mud and soon the others start laughing as well. We all are completely covered in mud, from head to toe. Daisy giggles loudly and plops back down in the mud and I lie down next to her.

"This is going to take forever to get out of my hair," she grins. I smile too and feel my own hair. I cringe at the sticky feeling of it. I turn to face the boys and see Matthew trying to restyle his hair with the mud in it. I chuckle and realize that it is getting dark quickly.

"Hey guys," I say to get the attention of everyone. "It's pretty dark out already."

"Well we can't go back to the campsite with all this mud on us," Ava explains.

"We could rinse off in a waterfall. After all it is on the list," Daisy suggests. Everyone nods in agreement and I stand up from the mud.

"Let's do it!" I exclaim. Everyone shouts happily and we begin the walk up the hill. After we've made it up the slope we find a map on the pathway that shows us where a waterfall is. The mud on my skin begins to harden and crack as we make the journey to the waterfall as well as everyone else's. I peel a chunk off of my face as it begins to itch and finally we've found the waterfall.

"Yes!" Daisy shouts for joy as she hops into the pool of water. I giggle and follow after her. The cold water refreshes my skin, and the mud instantly rinses off in it. I pop up from underneath the pool and float over to the actual waterfall part. It's a relatively small cascade of water, nothing compared to Niagara Falls, but it's still beautiful. Daisy is over here washing her hair and I can see some of her bright blonde peeking through the dark brown mud. I walk up behind her and grab her shoulders gently.

"Hi!" I yell. It echoes across the water and we giggle.

"Hey," she greets back. The water pounds against my head and I can see the mud rinsing off my hair and into the water. I hear a loud laugh from across the way and I turn to see Ava riding on Matthew's back through the waterfall. I smile. She looks happier than I've ever seen her. I dive underwater and swim up to Lincoln. I tap his leg and he turns around surprised. I come up and gesture to Matthew and Ava. He grins himself, turns around, and leans down for me to hop onto his back. I step onto his lower leg and climb onto his back. With my arms wrapped around his shoulders, he walks behind the other chicken fighters. I push Ava's back and Matthew swings around quickly. Both of their eyes narrow and I grin.

"Chicken fight!" Daisy calls from the waterfall and imitates a horn. I hear a splash and assume Daisy is coming to proctor this match. I immediately shove Ava by her shoulders but Matthew holds onto her legs tightly. She comes back at me by grabbing my hands and forcing me backwards. Lincoln clenches my legs and digs his nails into my calves, and I thrust forward. She lets go of my arms and swings her own in the air.

"Looks like Ava is a bit of a chicken! Bawk bawk!" Daisy comments like a sports announcer. I laugh but keep my focus. I tap Matthew with my feet to signal him to go forward, and I latch onto her shoulders. We push against each other for a while before Matthew kicks Lincoln's leg and he stumbles a bit. Ava catches me in a weak moment and releases my hands but shoves my chest backwards. I go sprawling off of his back and fall into the pool. I hear yelling and more splashing as I surface from the water. I wipe it out of my eyes and slick my hair back before seeing Daisy on top of Lincoln's back now.

"Take that!" Daisy yells as she gets her leg out of Lincoln's hold and kicks Ava's arms off of her. Daisy then pushes her shoulders. Ava falls backward and takes Matthew with her.

"Wooo!" Daisy cheers. Matthew begins their victory lap around the pool and I swim after them. He leans forward and sets Daisy down on the sandbar by the waterfall. She reaches for my hands and jumps up and down with me while shouting happily. We laugh and plop down in the water and quiet down. I faintly hear crickets in the background as while as the slight waves of the pool. I roll over onto my back to float and Daisy joins me.

"Cami?" she asks.

"Yeah?" I answer.

"Would you ever consider having kids?" I look up at the sky and notice the first few stars coming out.

"I've considered it. I would love to have kids but I don't want them to have to deal with my condition," I gulped. It was one of the hardest factors of Huntington's I had to face.

"You're such an inspiration to me. If the roles were flipped I would want kids no matter what. I'm just selfish I guess." I reach over to grab her hand and squeeze it.

"You're not selfish, Dais. I've gone over it in my head almost every day since I was diagnosed. I've had more time to think and I actually have to face the situation one day when for you it's only hypothetical." I can tell she's nodding by the way the water ripples next to me.

"If you had kids what would you name them?" she questions after a period of silence.

I listen to the sounds around me as I think. The bugs buzzing in the night air, the water flowing over rocks, the light brush of plants as the wind blows them against each other. But most of all the birds. The beautiful sound of the wren singing low and high in a rhythmic pattern stands out to me.

"Wren," I answer. "For a girl." I hear the water splash lightly as she rolls over and looks at me, and I turn onto my side too.

"I like that. Can I copy you and say Robin? I always saw them when I visited my grandma in Wisconsin."

"Sure. Wren and Robin," I conclude.

"Wren and Robin." I smile and look back up at the moon.

"We should probably head back to camp," I suggest. She nods and we both stand up in the shallow water. Lincoln is by the edge of the pool checking to see if our jackets and shoes and socks are dry, and Matthew and Ava are close by, doing a little kissing of course. We wade up to Lincoln and sit on the rocks next to our clothes.

"Ready to go?" he asks with a smile.

"Yeah," I answer with one last look at the waterfall in the moonlight. I have slight goosebumps on my arms from the entrance to the cool air from the water temperature I was used to. Matthew and Ava walk up to us and we all put on our shoes quietly. I cringe at the slight sogginess of them and Daisy and I laugh together. After we've gathered all of our stuff we start the short journey back to the campsite, but I stop for a second to glance back at the waterfall. The moon reflecting on the pool makes it shimmer different shades of blue and silver, and the plants around it frame it like a picture frame. I wish I had my camera with me. I sigh to myself but also smile at the memories we had tonight and will have for the rest of my life.
