~Chapter Three~

"Camylle?" a groggy voice calls out. I turn my head from where I am sitting to look at Daisy. She's sprawled out on the chair with her feet dangling over the armrest and her head upside down and almost touching the floor.

"Yes Daisy?" I ask cheerfully.

"Why are you up so early?" she groans and throws a pillow at my head. I squeal and catch the pillow in my arms before setting it down next to me.

"What was that for?" I question while tossing it back.

"Well its called a throw pillow, isn't it?" she mumbles while propping her head up on it and burrowing into the chair. I shake my head and feel some movement on the couch behind me.

"Lincoln Log?" I whisper, using his childhood nickname. He opens his eyes and smiles at me and says,

"Camera?" I giggle and turn to see Daisy waddling out of the room with her llama blanket draped across her shoulders.

"Where are you going Daisykins?" Lincoln grins.

"Food," she answers over her shoulder and continues her journey to the kitchen. I stand up from the floor and stretch my back out and yawn simultaneously.

"Doesn't look like you got too much sleep last night by the looks of those under eye circles," Lincoln comments. I slap his arm playfully before sliding my feet into my cow slippers, courtesy of Daisy.

"I got plenty of sleep, thank you very much," I reply. We silently walk out of the sunroom and into the kitchen where Daisy has already helped herself to some cereal. She plops down in a chair and reaches down into the cereal box before shoving some in her mouth.

"I'm hungry, ok?" she defends herself. I grin and look through the cupboards for the pancake mix box.

"I swear this box was here yesterday," I mumble to myself as I continue my search. I close the pantry door and look back at the counters, making sure it isn't hiding in plain sight.

"What are you looking for?" Lincoln asks me.

"The pancake mix." I open the fridge and freezer on a last limb but find nothing except the normal groceries.

"Why would you make pancakes anyway? Cereal is so much less work," Daisy comments with her mouth full.

"Because I am not lazy," I joke. She rolls her eyes and continues eating her breakfast. I sigh and grab an apple from the fruit bowl, and Lincoln takes a granola bar and a banana. We shuffle outside so we can eat on the deck in the cool morning air.

"That's where the pancake mix went!" I yell as I see the huge stack of pancakes on one of the tables. My mom smiles as she unties her apron and sets the syrup down on the glass table. I hug her, thanking her for the breakfast.

"How did you make all of this this morning?" I ask as we each pull away from the hug.

"It's no biggie. I just woke up early," she says with a shrug.

"Mrs. Nevue, you spoil us too much," Daisy says with a big smile on her face as she loads her plate with pancakes.

"It's no problem. I still love spoiling my baby girls and their friends." Ava and I give each other a look of mutual embarrassment as Mom calls us her babies. We all give her our thanks before she has to leave to go to work. I curl up in a cushioned chair at the table and set my plate down.

"Your mom is such a good cook," Daisy compliments with a fork full of food halfway to her mouth.

"Well she's got to make up for my dad," I say, half joking-half serious. Lincoln shifts in his chair and Daisy looks away from me and down at the ground.

"Guys my dad has had Huntington's for over two years now. You don't need to act uncomfortable when I joke about it. It's all fun and games," I say.

"Until someone loses an eye," Matthew mumbles from a nearby table. I roll my eyes, trying not to pick a fight I know isn't worth it.

"Camylle, you have to admit it is a little morbid to joke about Huntington's," Ava mentions.

"My disease, my way of dealing with it," I snap at her.

"Well there are other ways of dealing with it you know. You could go to a counselor or-"

"Can we not talk about this at breakfast please?" Matthew breaks in. Ava gives him a look for interrupting her, and I almost snort at how evil she looks.

"Actually, let's talk about it," I announce.

"Cam-" Ava starts.

"No. No interrupting. Just hear me out," I say as I stand up in front of everyone.

"As we all know, I have tested positive for the Huntington's Disease gene, meaning I will inherit the disease whether it be early onset or just regular. I don't know when I will start showing symptoms. It's a curse. I could have fifteen years, I could have sixty. So I've decided that I should live my life to the fullest before this happens. Therefore, I have created the list."

"What are you talking about?" Ava asks. I hold my hand up to tell her to shush, and I continue explaining.

"Behold the list. The list of things I want to do before I die," I hold up the piece of looseleaf with the items written on it in colorful pens and decorated with cute doodles.

"Camylle, what is this supposed to be?" Ava questions me yet again.

"Think about it like this. I am going to die a slow and painful way. I could die sooner rather than later, or later rather than sooner. But since I don't know when I will die, I want my life to be as spectacular and amazing as it can be before I'm out of time."

"So you're creating a bucket list?" Matthew inquires.

"Basically. But it's no ordinary list. Some of the things are small that I can do in town, and some will require the help of planes and other modes of transportation." Matthew nods his head in approval, and Ava glares at him in disgust.

"How do you suppose we buy plane tickets? We don't have unlimited funds!" Ava says matter-of-factly.

"I don't know. We'll figure it out as we go."

"I, for one, think this is the most craziest, death-defying, and simply awesome idea ever!" Daisy exclaims as she gets out of her seat and stands up next to me. She does a cute little happy dance and I shake my head and laugh.

"You're seriously going to go with Daisy? She's insane!" Ava yells. Daisy stops her dance, looks Ava in the eye, and says,

"Why thank you! Although I do prefer the term crazy." Ava rolls her eyes and slumps back in her chair.

"What about you Lincoln?" I ask my other best friend. He unfolds his arms and stands up from his chair.

"I think it's a little crazy, yes. But if anyone can do it, Cami can. And she's my best friend so I kind of have to go along with her insane ideas," he answers with a laugh. Daisy and I cheer, and she grabs Lincoln's arm and pulls him toward our spot where we are standing.

"Now is your chance to decide you want to help me with the list," I say to Ava and Matthew.

"Av, I think it would be kind of fun," he comments. Ava crosses her arms over her chest and stares him down.

"You want to go with my little sister on a stupid and insane adventure so she can find peace with her life? Because that is not what I want my whole summer to be! I have a very important internship that I can't give up!"

"It isn't about you though. It's about Camylle," he attempts to reason with her. She opens her mouth to speak again but shuts it quickly.

"Ava, you're known as the sister who doesn't have the disease. The curse. The sister people aspire to be. You're a better student and person than me and you always have been. All I'm asking is for you to sort of make it up to me. If you come along on the trip I will never use Huntington's against you or argue about it. Please Ava. Just do this for me," I plead. She sits and thinks for a few seconds and I anxiously await her answer. Even though we don't get along all the time, I still want my sister with me on this adventure. We're family after all, and as much as I don't like to say it, I need her in my life.

"Fine. I'll do it. But you owe me big time."

"Thank you thank you thank you!" I yell as I squeeze her small frame and jump up and down.

"But no more of that death hug," she declares. I laugh and release my hold on her.

"Now that everyone has agreed to the list, would you like to hear what's on it?" I inquire. They all nod and I begin reading the list.
