Carve My Name in a Tree
The sound of crickets and birds chirping was once calming to me, but now it's anything but. I flip onto my stomach and fold my pillow over my ears. Lincoln and Daisy sleep away on either side of me, and I envy their ability to fall asleep anywhere. I shift my position once again and end up on my back.
"Ok, just think of your happy place," I mumble to myself. I close my eyes and think back to the waterfall last night and how tranquil the area was. The bugs buzz louder and I sigh loudly before sitting up. "Daisy!" I whisper shout while grabbing her arm and swinging it. I give up on that and poke her repeatedly in the side.
"Hello Mr. Bear," she grumbles and flips onto her side. I grip her arms and her eyes shoot open. "Don't kill me!" she exclaims. I shush her and gesture to Lincoln with my head. "Sorry. A bear was chasing me through a marshmallow beach," she explains with a wave of her hand and I smile. "Anyways, what's up?"
"I can't sleep," I announce. She frowns and wraps me in a hug.
"Poor Cam," she squeezes me tightly. I drape my arms around her body as well.
"I was going to go on a walk and get a picture of the from waterfall last night. Or well, a couple hours ago," I suggest. Daisy nods and lets go of me and starts rummaging through her suitcase. "What are you doing?" I question.
"Sweatshirt. It's cold out." She shrugs and tosses me a sweatshirt. I pull it on over my short sleeve tee and unzip the tent a little so I can grab my shoes. I pull my white converse onto my bare feet and hand Daisy's shoes to her. She opens the rest of the tent door and we crawl out into the chilly night.
"Where are you going?" a hoarse voice asks. I whip my head around to see Lincoln sitting up in his sleeping bag with a confused look on his face.
"Walk. I can't sleep," I explain.
"Can I join you?" I nod and he follows us out into the open air of the campsite. It's almost completely dark outside, and I reach into my pocket to make sure I have my phone with me.
"Camera!" I remember and slip back into the tent. I quickly unzip my duffel, grab my polaroid, and step out of the tent again.
"Ready?" Daisy asks.
"Ready." We start our walk by taking a left out of the campsite. I realize how different it looks at night and I take my phone out and turn the flashlight on. The familiar birch trees are illuminated by the light as well as the small pond to our right. A light wind blows, kicking up the small piles of leaves on the path. I recognize the hill to my left as the one I fell down, and I smile widely. Daisy nudges me with her shoulder and grins herself.
"What's up?" she asks.
"Nothing. Just thinking," I say.
"About what?"
"The list."
"What about the list?" I giggle at her prodding and play with my camera strap.
"Just about how I'll remember every event for as long as I can. And when I'm in a care facility how you have to visit me and retell the crazy stories of our teenage years."
"I promise," she says, and I can tell she's doing her sad smile.
"Lincoln," I call. He turns around and I grin. "Do you promise to visit me and tell me stories of what we did on the list?"
"Promise," he smiled. I wrapped my arm around his shoulder and my other arm around Daisy's with my polaroid dangling around my neck.
"Hey Lincoln?" I asked.
"Yeah?"
"Does Dave think you're dating one of us?"
"Sort of," he starts. "He wants me to date one of you."
"Which one?" I nudge his shoulder playfully.
"Cami. No offense, Daisy." He glances at Daisy quickly.
"None taken," she answers with a shrug. "You're not really my type anyways." He smiles and I look down at his feet and attempt to match his stroke. "There it is!" Daisy shouts and runs towards whatever it is she found. I look up and see the waterfall in all its splendor, and I immediately take my polaroid out of its case and snap a shot of the moon reflecting off the pool. I snatch the picture before it falls to the ground and I watch as the colors came to the surface. I slowly walk over to the rocks and sit down on one of them. Lincoln joins me and we watch as Daisy wanders around the edge of the fall.
"You cold?" he asks as I wrap my arms around my thinly covered arms. I nod and he drapes his arms around my shoulders and hugs me close to his body. I snuggle into his shoulder as a slight wind blows over us and a sprinkle of water from the pool splashes our legs. I laugh and look up at Lincoln. He leans closer to my face and I turn away quickly at the sound of running footsteps.
"I found a flower!" Daisy shouts as she comes sprinting towards us. I stand up from the rock along with Lincoln and smile.
"That's great," I laugh. She grins herself and places it in her hair.
"You ready to go?" she asks, looking between the two of us. I turn around to see Lincoln looking back at me and I break the stare and nod to Daisy. She nods her head herself and leads us along the path. I sigh quietly as I feel like this ended awkwardly and don't want to go back on this note. I stare at the polaroid and play with it in my hands when I see something on the very edge of the picture.
"Wait," I call out and both of them spin around and look at me. "There's this big tree by the waterfall. I was thinking we could carve our names into it for the list?" Daisy immediately smiles and grabs my hand and pulls me back towards the waterfall. I laugh as I stumble over my feet as I run through the darkness. I hear Lincoln's heavier footsteps behind me and turn to see him right beside me grinning. He pulls my ponytail and I laugh and slap his arm playfully. Daisy drags me harder and I jog faster. We come to a halt when we approach the tree and I pant. I haven't been running like that for a while. Since Dad's diagnosis actually. I shake it off and open my hand for Lincoln's pocket knife I know he always carries with him. He hands me the tool and I open it to the knife feature.
"Ready?" I ask. They share a glance and smile and nod. I grin and start the carving with a heart then with my name written in capital block letters. I hand the tool to Lincoln and he makes a plus sign and writes his own name. Finally Daisy engraves her names in her bubbly handwriting underneath both of ours. We stand back to admire our work and grin while looking at each other. I hand my camera to Daisy for her to take a picture and I hug the tree underneath where our carving is and smile largely. The flash goes off and I hop down from the tiny mound of dirt. She hands me the photo and I beam at how cute it is.
"Hey you!" Someone yells from a few yards away. We turn around simultaneously and see a man in flannel pajamas with a very angry look on his face speed walking towards us.
"Run," I whisper. I take off sprinting and clutch on to Lincoln's hand who grabs Daisy's.
"Stop running!" He shouts, his voice echoing across the pond of the waterfall. I turn around and see him still coming after us in those ridiculous red and green polka dotted pants.
"Take a right," I instruct Lincoln and Daisy. They follow my command and spin to the right instead of the left. My hair flies in my face making it difficult to run, not to mention the pure darkness of the forest. I rely on Lincoln to guide us back to the campsite. We make two more right turns before ending up where we started. I gasp for air and my legs burn, but I still continue jogging. The nature around us whizzes by as my feet hardly touch the gravel path underneath. I recognize the sign that is about twenty feet away from our campsite, and we start slowing down as the camper and tents come into our view. I immediately stop as soon as my feet touch the grass, and Daisy leans over next to me. I hobble over to sit on the the picnic table bench and lean my back against the table while sprawling my legs out in front of me.
"Pain," Daisy moans as she sits down next to me. Lincoln walks around the table to cool down the proper way and eventually joins us.
"I'm never running again," I groan and breathe heavily.
"Never mind running. I'm never moving again. The couch will be my new home," Daisy declares. We all laugh and grab our stomachs as they are sore from the day's activities.
"Camylle!" Ava whines after unzipping her tent. "Why are you awake at four in the morning?" We all glance at each other and dissolve into a hysterical laughing fit again. "Guys!" she yells. I fold over and slap my leg and laugh harder at how bad that hurt. Daisy points at me and snorts, making us giggle even louder. Ava crawls out of the tent and grabs my hands, making us all quiet down. "Shut up. Or make breakfast. Just do something with your time." She storms away and zips up the tent in a menacing manner. I look back at Daisy and we softly giggle. Lincoln joins in and soon enough we're back at our laughing fit.
"That's it!" Ava shouts and storms out of the tent once again. "Let's make breakfast." She smiles sweetly. We stand up and chuckle before she turns around with a spatula in hand. She hands me the bowl with the boxxed mix inside, Lincoln the pan and oil, and Daisy the chocolate chips. Ava quickly rustles up Matthew from their enclosure and Daisy tosses me a chocolate chip and I catch it in my mouth. She gives me a thumbs up and I grin.
"Morning guys," Matthew greets with a yawn.
"Good morning," I chirp.
"Morning," Daisy and Lincoln say in unison.
"Yes, it's just a great morning," Ava grumbles before grabbing more supplies from the bin. Matthew raises his eyebrows at us and I shrug and rip open the box of mix and pour some into the plastic bowl.
"Cami did you measure that?" Ava inquires.
"Yes," I lie. She nods and hands Lincoln a brush for spreading the oil. He begins on that as Daisy eats the chocolate chips. Matthew opens his mouth and gestures for her to throw him some. He catches one in his mouth and she smiles. I pour water into the mix and stir it with the spoon Ava supplied me with before handing the bowl to her. She pours the batter into the large pan and Daisy sprinkles chocolate into two of the three pancakes. I stand up and grab paper plates and plastic utensils as well as spreadable butter. I set everything up on the table, leaving a spot for the pancake plate that Ava brings over. My mouth waters at the giant stack of pancakes, and I quickly grab three and plop them on my plate.
"To the list," I cheer, pointing my fork up with a piece of pancake on it. We all clank forks before taking a bite.
"So... what are you doing up so early?" Matthew asks. Lincoln, Daisy, and I all glance at each other and grin.
"That's better left unexplained," I say and smile as I dig into my breakfast.
