Afternoon Tea
The quartet of royal ladies sat silently, no one knowing what to say. Elsa was far too nervous to speak, fearful that she might slip up and freeze the whole garden. Her tea was already starting to freeze over. As far as she knew, Rapunzel was just looking for some mistake to tell her parents and the other royals so they can declare war on Arendelle. Perhaps she was simply overreacting, but every precaution is necessary.
Rapunzel and Anna weren't that far off from Elsa. Both knew very little about official tea parties. Anna had played with her dolls and mother when she was little, but it was so long ago and far from accurate formalities. Rapunzel had even less experience, having only read about them in her books and had tea with only her parents a few times.
Merida sat glaring at her still very full cup of tea. She was mad at her mother again. She knew that her mother was right, but that only seemed to make the irritation worse. Not to mention, they were supposed to talk about it later. Who knew what would happen?
At long last, Rapunzel broke the silence.
"So... Anna. How did things go with Prince Hans?"
"Oh, he was a jerk and has been banished from Arendelle from now until eternity."
"I...what?"
Elsa and Merida sat up, listening intently.
"A banishment story? Tell us!" Merida demanded.
"Well, I'm not sure if it's my place..."
"Go on," Elsa gave permission, "You're a much better storyteller than me."
"Well..." Anna was still hesitant, "It might bore you..."
"I read the same five books for eighteen years," Rapunzel said, "Nothing is more boring than that."
"Okay. So we're at Elsa's coronation -right?- I met Prince Hans earlier that day - he had run into me with his horse - which now that I think about it he really should've been watching where he was going - Of course, he probably did it on purpose... Anyway! We ran into each other at the after-party. We danced and walked through the gardens and I gave him a tour of the castle and we talk about what it's like to be the youngest and shunned by older siblings - Of course, now that I know why you did it, Elsa, I completely understand. But by the end of the night, he proposed to me."
Merida rolled her eyes, "Of course he did."
Rapunzel let out a squeal, "Why didn't you say yes?!"
"Well..."
"All you did was talk about him when you were with Eugene and I. Anna! You turned down your dream man!"
Elsa butt in, "You might want to hear how this story ends."
Anna continued, "So, he proposed to me and I DID say yes, but that was before I knew what he was planning. So we go back to the party to find Elsa and give her the news. So we find her and ask for her blessing and she said no -which, good instinct. That's why you're the queen and I'm not. So she said no, but I kept pushing and pushing and I grabbed her glove and it came off and then..."
Anna stopped, not sure how to phrase it.
"You had your... incident." Rapunzel finished, looking at Elsa. The blonde looked away uncomfortably.
"I don' understand," Merida looked between the others, "Wha' incident?"
Nobody said anything, so the redhead asked again, "Well, is somebody goin' ta tell me?"
Anna and Rapunzel both looked at Elsa; it was her secret after all. Elsa stuttered for a moment, trying to decide what was the best way to explain it. Perhaps a small demonstration would do it. She gazed around the garden for something small and meaningless, perhaps a flower. Her eyes set on a simple rose. Tentatively, she reached out and stroked the pedal, causing ice to wash over the flower. She broke the stem just before the ice could engulf the rest of the bush and pulled the flower towards the center of the table. Her confidence growing, she carefully made a simple vase and placed the iced rose inside.
The princesses all stared, wide-eyed. Even Anna, who had gotten to experience her sister's magic daily, was fascinated by the beauty. Cassandra, who had been standing just outside the pavilion, moved closer to get a better look. She gawked alongside the princesses at the magic. 'So it is true!' she thought.
"How'd ja do that'?"
"Well, I was born with magic. Ice magic mostly. I can manipulate Ice and snow. When we were little, Anna actually knew about my powers, but then..." Elsa didn't want to finish. Anna placed her hand on her sister's shoulder. Elsa was the only one with any memory of the incident and was the only one who could tell the story. "There was an accident. Anna was going to fall and I tried to catch her with my magic, but I missed... Our parents took us to the trolls and they told us that I had frozen her head. So to keep Anna alive, they erased her memory of my magic. and for the next sixteen years, I had only minimal interaction with anyone, to keep them safe."
Rapunzel gasped excitedly, "Oh my gosh! Me too!"
Of all the reactions Elsa expected, excitement was not one of them. "I- What?"
"Oh! Well, it wasn't to keep others safe. It was to keep me safe. I was born with magic hair and that's why I was kidnapped. The woman who took me raised me in a tower in the middle of nowhere and would have me use my magic to heal her and keep her young. On my eighteenth birthday, Eugene found my tower and helped me escape because I wanted to see the floating lanterns that happened to be released every year on my birthday. It wasn't until we got to Corona and back that I realized that I was the Lost Princess. And in order to get away from the woman who kidnapped me, we had to cut my hair which reversed everything I had used my magic for."
Anna gasped, "Elsa! You're not the only one with magic!"
"I suppose so."
"I turned ma mum inta a bear."
Silence.
"It's true. She wa' goin' ta marry me off ta some lord who won da tournament. I didn't wan' to. She didn't listen. I found a witch and turned her into a bear fer a few days."
"Well... I think we're going to be good friends."
