Prologue

"Perseto Selbus", someone yelled behind me as I ran deeper into the woods. The bushes behind me flashed in flames, in front of my eyes. I held onto my wand tighter. The woods were getting darker as we ran deeper into them. I was surrounded by trees on all sides, bushes beneath my feet, their tips tickling my ankles. It would have felt nice being here, intoxicated by the woody and muddy smell of the trees, but maybe some other time. Such a situation didn't fit the environment surrounding me.

I ran faster. Running one hundred and forty-three miles in one day, didn't exactly hurt my legs. It could never hurt. I barred my fangs at them and laughed lowly, almost scornfully. I jerked my wand, making a blue light shine on it and closed my eyes, recollecting the spells the Andeges had taught me.

Anteleto Propes.

Irabus Rico.

Postarnum Selendipedes.

YES!

"Postarnum Selendipedes!" I screamed, pointing my wand at the vampires that were chasing me. Their desperate eyes now looked horrific. The chant of the spell made fire surround the men. A thick glass wall with pointed edges caged them. Now, they were caged by fire and glass. No way to escape. Maybe, it won't kill them but it'll give me enough time to escape from their reach.

Without pausing there for another moment, I ran away from them, deeper into the woods. There had to be an end to the woods and there was. The end of the woods was the beginning to a beautiful lake that glittered under the silvery light of the moon. It looked surreal. The lake was surrounded by pine trees and many other kinds of trees on all sides. November was approaching and the smell of snow hung in the air. The misty weather and the fresh air made me close my eyes for a moment, breathing in the woodsy smell.

No smell of blood.

No thirst.

I wish I could hug nature and inhale it's scent. The perfume she used smelled so much like the one my mother used. They call her Mother Nature. If I ever get to hug her, would it feel like hugging the mom I never had? I snorted at the thought.

Silly thoughts!

Opening my eyes, I walked out towards the lake. The lake was so clear that I could see my reflection under the moonlight. I smiled at my reflection when something suddenly caught my eyes. Drops of blood tickled my forehead and I tilted my head to look up. And they were there, on the branches, in a squatting position. If any human passes by, at this time of the night, would definitely find this creepy.

Three vampires squatting on the branches of a tree, blood dripping from their lips, their intensity of thirst rising, a perfect smirk plastered on their pale faces and them slightly tilting their heads from side to side.

Damn.

"Give yourself to us", Victor, the eldest of them demanded. He said this same lame line for the thirtieth time this month. I yawned and looked at them in a bored manner. Pushing my hands deeper into my jean pockets, I tilted my head at them too. The weather was becoming cooler.

"Don't y'all have school? Or anything better to do than chase someone who y'all won't ever get?" I deadpanned. Their faces darkened and the moonlight was enough to notice it. Vampires did look scary when their faces darkened but me here, wasn't scared. They were the ones who should be scared, not me.

"Scare away enemies, but you should never look scared. Your one vulnerable look would be their advantage to erase you off the story. Never look scared, even if you're scared inside." That was what the Andeges taught us- to never look scared. Being scared is pretty natural, quite human.

Human. We weren't humans, were we? We looked like one, we behaved like one, but we weren't bloody humans. We were stronger, faster and better creatures. We were...vampires. The blood drinkers. We drank blood, indeed but that made us dangerous, creepy, not bad. We could be humans. We could be normal. We were normal, it's just that, we were made to be like this- freaking blood drinkers.

"Do what we're fucking asking you to do! Don't cross your limits, Zoel", he said through his gritted teeth.

"It's not Zoel for you, it's Zeoliette. And I won't do what you'll ask me to do. I'm not one of your bimbos who crawl at your feet. Anyway, your feet are too dirty.", I said cooly and then with a sharper accent, "I hope you're aware of the things they can do to you, Victor. Stay away from me. It'd be better for you", I added. His tilted head, slightly lowered but he quickly regained his posture.

"God, does this girl ever shut up? And what the fuck is she talking about?" Clarence, the one squatting beside Victor, asked.

"Nope", I said, shaking my head.

"I never asked you, shut your damn mouth", he said looking at me, "Why are we even chasing her, Victor?" He asked Victor, now turning his head to look at him who was shooting daggers at me. I completely ignored their presence. I was becoming impatient now. I was hungry and I had to go back to the dorm before 2:00 a.m.

"Okay, guys, so here's the thing. Uh, I'm getting late and I'm really hungry, so I'll meet y'all someday later. Bye, g'night", I said and walked out of there, putting my hands back into the jean pockets. That was such a waste of time.

Getting back to the dorms felt like getting back to where I actually belong- to the best people. It was all dark by the time I reached the dorms and... I was late. My watch read 2:05a.m. Darn it. I slowly unlocked the door, as noiselessly as I could, to my dorm room and creeped inside, on my tip-toes. I had taken just two steps inside the dark room when the lights turned on.

Well, shit.

I looked around the brightly lit room, standing in a weird position. Well, this won't be a great night.

"You're late", a deep voice protruded through the bright light.

No shit, Sherlock.
