Stuart

One month after their runaway, Wednesday morning

"Can I ask you something?"
Stirring with the spoon, the loud clinking of the metal and the glass, made my lip curl, as I placed it under my teeth.
Raising an eyebrow, Stone handed me a cup of coffee.
"You already have. Care to ask another?" Laughing at me, I buried my face into the steaming heat of the mug; deeply embarrassed.
"When did your nightmares start? Did something traumatize you as a child? You tend to mess up the house, and startle me while I'm sleeping. I don't know whether or not you may need my help. So I stay awake until you settle down, last night I thought I'd be brave; but you said that you're dangerous.
I don't believe you are Stone Avils. I believe you're kind, and honorable, you're no monster."
Smiling he let his head down, modestly. "Well, uh, well they started after the very first time my mother's and my father's family met. It was no holiday, just my grandmother's birthday. And she wanted us all to live in harmony, and forget about the color differences.
Even her wishes weren't kept. That night it was just the men in the family, sitting by the fire. Iven, and Levi were inside, as I sat with Perry and Auston, my mother's nephews.
They were rather kind to me, but yet as the night progressed their true personalities did as well. Stuart, my father's son born of a different mother, came to say goodbye to me.
We said our farewells, and randomly, heartlessly, they pushed him into the fire.
I'd rather not repeat what they said to him as he desperately tried to get away from the flames. As he was my brother I attempted to save him, but they battered me with their fists; and their feet, prohibiting me from doing so.
By the time my mother got to us, Stuart had already died. And before they were taken away they whispered to me, the only reason why I didn't burn, was because I was half of them.
That I should thank my mother and God for the blessing of being white.
And they smiled, and they laughed. They killed my brother with a smile etched on their faces.
I fought my sleep for a few nights, but I couldn't fight it off any longer, the first time I slept fine. And so did the third. It was the fourth time, and the fifth time, continuing on.
That night made me aggressive my mother believes. I'd pick fights with my brother's and speak harshly towards her."
Taking a bite out of his scone he shrugged.
"I suppose she was right. My nightmares just seemed so real, that I reacted to them strangely. I'd be asleep, but I'd speak, and move as if I were not. My mother was so afraid she sent physician after physician to try to cure me.
You can't cure a man that needs no cure. I'm fine is what I told them countlessly, but my mother wouldn't have it. She just doesn't know when to leave well enough alone. My mother she..."
I backed away from the kitchen bar, slowly. His anger was erupting furiously, "But that's enough about me, today is Wednesday, which means you're going to lose."
Laughing, I jumped out of the chair, Stone already made it out of the doorway.
"You're a cheater Stone Avils!"
"I am no such thing!"
His voice was close, he was right next to me as I reached the open air, "Ready?"
"Of-,"
Dashing right in front of me, he ran, blowing a breath roughly I sprinted after him. He was a quick one, but I'll beat him.
