Chapter 10

Author's note: I know it's late and I know it's not that long. I have reasons why but the most important on right now is that it's just gone midnight and I have to get up early tomorrow to go to a turkey farm... IDK either...

I call Chad from outside Jordan's room, having only just realised that no one back on campus knows about the accident yet. The phone rings three times before a very stressed voice answers.

"Erin! Where are you? You said you'd be around early to help and there is still so much to do!" I hear a loud shatter followed by muttered curse words. "Looks like we'll be needing more glasses... Where are you?"

I sigh and bite my lip. "I'm at the hospital." Silence booms through my ears. I can feel his smile dropping from his face and I am so disappointed in myself for ruining yet another person's happiness.

A full minute has passed when Chad finally stutters, "Wh-wh-why? What's happened?"

I gape my mouth, expecting some sort of explanation, any type of reason to answer him. Nothing. I press my lips together to force out words but it doesn't work. He sniffles loudly down the line.

"There was an accident." My lips are dry and chapped, my voice coarse and thick. "The guy walked into the way of the van. We stopped too fast. Jordan, he-he-he.." I can't carry on. The tears are blurring my vision. I guide myself to a chair and put my head in my hands.

"Erin- are you both okay?" His voice crackles through the speaker. I need to tell him about Jordan's condition but my voice is caught in my throat. But I need to do this. I force myself to speak with so much effort that I can feel bile raising.

"Coma!" The words spit from my lips, piercing the air around me. I have finally admitted it- Jordan is in a coma. Because of me. "He-he-he can't move Chad! It's all my fault!" Within seconds I hang up the call and skid the phone across the polished floor. It hits the wall with a satisfying crash.

I turn to go back into Jordan's room when it vibrates again. Chad's face illuminates the screen, a bright selfie outside class with my arm casually around his shoulders. Jordan is walking out of shot in the near background, a new game clasped tightly in his hands. We seemed so happy, it was only yesterday. Now I'm broken. My heart is missing a piece, the piece that Jordan is clinging onto.
