28 - The war of the vampires

The scream. That's all we got. The only warning. I don't know who's scream it was but I think it might have saved my brothers' lives. Though it wasn't enough I am still thankful for that scream. When I heard that I knew something was up. Something wasn't right. Something inside me told me that I wasn't safe and that I needed to get out of there but I wasn't just going to run away.

I walked down the hall to my little brothers' room. They looked up at me when I walked in. It had clearly disturbed them as much as it had for me. "Did you hear that too?" Jack asked.

I nodded, "Something is wrong..."

They looked worried. "Are mummy and daddy ok?" Jack asked.

"I'm not sure.... let's go check," I told them and they nodded.

We all quickly rushed out of the room and down the stairs. My mother and father were in the study looking out the window to the street. We walked up to them nervously. What was happening out there? Something inside me told me to dread the answer.

"What's going on?" Jake asked.

"Nothing sweetie, just take Jack and go into the basement," Mother told him.

With the worry and urgency in our mother's voice, Jake did as he was told. "Mum, what's going on?" I asked once they were out of hearing range.

"There seems to be some... army attacking people," she told me.

"What..... what do you mean?" I asked really confused. What on earth is he talking about... I heard that scream but...

I walked up to the window and what I saw was horrific and I wish I could unsee it. To this day I still remember that horrific sight. I think it would take a lifetime to forget.

There was blood all over the street, dead bodies scattered throughout it too, dead bodies of people I have known for years too. My neighbours. Worse of all were the ones who killed them. They were people with cold red eyes.... vampires. Their mouths and hands were dripping with blood from fresh victims. They charged into the homes of innocent people and ripped them to shreds, leaving blood to trickle from the broken down doorways and into the street. I had to look away. I couldn't stand to see the massacre.

"Please go protect your brothers Victoria," my father told me. I nodded and quickly ran up to my room. I searched around for my cavalry sabre. It was hidden under my bed and I quickly pulled it out from under there. I felt that I would need to use this. And I was thankful for it, it was probably the only weapon in the whole house had it could mean the difference between life and death for my family.

I walked quickly down to the basement with it. My brothers were down there hugging each other in fear. It was really dark down there, I tried to turn on a light but after flicking the switch a few times I realised the power was out. Which would make sense. I closed the door behind me. The dark doesn't really bother me because for some reason I can see in the dark now. My brothers couldn't see in the dark though.

"Victoria I'm really scared," Jake whimpered.

"Don't worry Jake I won't let them hurt you," I told him trying to comfort him, he hadn't seen what I saw though. I was still really scared, I had no idea how I could protect them. I know I can't become a vampire but I can still be killed by one. This really wasn't the time to be thinking about that. I hugged my brothers trying to comfort them. What I should be thinking about is protecting my family. I may not be a werewolf like Flame and Griffin or a witch like Kara but I'm not an ordinary human and I can use my sword.

"What about Mummy and Daddy?" Jack asked clinging onto me sounding terrified.

He was right, I couldn't just leave them up there against the vampires. Neither of them had fought a vampire before. "I'll be right back ok, I'm just going to get them," I told my brothers then I walked out of the basement. With my sensitive sense of smell, I could smell blood from far away. I just hoped that was coming from the street.

My dad was holding a cricket bat and my mother was holding a butcher knife. They were both staring at the door, they looked determined but I could smell fear in the air. And I was quite sure the vampires would be able to smell that as well.

I tried to walk over to them as quietly as I could but they heard me and looked over at me. Their eyes instantly fell to my cavalry sabre

"Where did you get that?" my father asked.

I could hear loud footsteps walking up our driveway, "It's a long story I'll tell you later but right now someone is coming, I can hear them."

They turned back around to face the door right before it was kicked down. A tall woman in a long red dress and a gun walked in. Her red eyes sparkled despite the darkness of the room.

"Vampire," I growled and drew my sword. It was time for me to use my speed as an advantage. I had to kill her before she killed my parents. As fast as I could I lunged forward with my sword stabbing her in the shoulder. The sharp blade of the sword easily cut into her skin and cut past everything in its way before sticking out the other side. She dropped her gun and cried out in pain. My father then hit her across the head with the cricket bat knocking her conscious.

"Well done dad," I told him forcing myself to smile.

The door opened again I could smell vanilla. I looked up and there was Kara in some sort of magical girl cosplay. "Hey guys I'm here to help protect you from the vampire apocalypse," she said sounding a little too happy, she then struck a magical girl pose with wind rushing all around her.

At least she would be able to help. She may be an idiot but she can use magic. I really hope magic works against vampires. Even though she looked a little ridiculous compared to the horror movie outside our house I was grateful. My parents were about to question her but suddenly a whole group of vampires burst into the house from the front windows. Shattering glass all over everything, Kara instantly sprung into action. Wind caught the glass in the air and it swirled around cutting gashes into the vampire's exposed skin before landing safely outside. The vampires all saw us and ran towards us with a murderous look in their eyes. Kara took the ones to the right. She summoned the power of a controlled hurricane. She lifted all the vampires up in the powerful wind then threw them back down causing serious damage. My parents and I fought off the ones to the left. My sword cut effortlessly through the vampires while my parents seemed to be a little hesitant to fight. I didn't enjoy all this gore I was seeing but I had to do this or my brothers and parents would be killed. There was really no choice in my mind. The newfound speed and strength I had guided the blade through their bodies with ease. None even got close.

Once we had finished with them Kara turned to me, "Good job," she smiled.

It's strange, no one would ever expect that such a happy girl like Kara would be able to kill like this. She was a complete contradiction, she even had a peaceful smile on her face and she crushed the lungs of those vampires she killed.

My mother was looking at the broken windows in horror. "Don't worry mum, the windows are the least of our concern," I told her trying to comfort her but she shook her head and pointed I looked where she was pointing. I whole wave of vampires was walking up the street. They filled both lanes of the road.

"Oh no," I whispered.

"Don't worry guys, I'm a witch I can handle this," Kara reassured us. Still, I was nervous that was way too many vampires. I wondered if Flame was fighting these kinds of odds every time he wasn't at school.

A whole group of them started to walk towards us, red eyes glowing in the dark. "Kara..." There was so much fear in my voice.

"All of you get behind me and close your eyes," she commanded sounding serious for once. My parents and I huddled behind her and closed our eyes.

I'm not quite sure what Kara did but I remembered feeling air rushing past us so fast I thought we would fly away. Then lots of screams. There was a strong scent of blood in the air and her attacks were adding to it. I was glad to have someone like Kara at my side to protect me but I felt bad for the other people who don't have anyone to protect them. What would they do? Would the vampires just murder them? They had no idea anything like this was coming and they were completely defenceless.

Just thinking about it left a bad taste in my mouth.

"Open your eyes now," Kara sang.

I opened my eyes to see ripped open dead bodies of vampires everywhere. It was like a sword had cut them but Kara didn't have any swords. Can the wind really be that powerful that it is like a blade? I felt sick looking at the bodies so I tried my best to look away. I looked at Kara's face, she had that calm smile she would have at any other time. She was so incredibly powerful no only with magic but also mentally she handled this like a superhero.

My mother, however, looked scared out of her mind. She hands were trembling she could barely hold onto the butcher knife.

My father was scared too, but being a typical man he was trying to hide it best he could. His hands were still trembling though.

That was an awful sight. To see your own parents scared out of their minds. Kara smiled sadly back at me, she didn't know what to say. I've never actually seen her parents or her house. Really I know nothing about Kara except she is a witch and a bit weird. I really should get to know her better. Especially since she was helping me right now in a way I could never fully repay her for. We could probably become pretty good friends. I forced myself to smile at her and she smiled sweetly and genuinely back. Nothing much seems to affect her. She seems to have a kind of numb innocence to the seriousness of what is going on around her. I wished I could be like that. However, the sight of the blood and the bodies of my neighbours turned my face sour.

I heard a scream coming from behind me. A little boy's scream.

The basement!

My brothers!

My mum looked at me and mouthed the word 'go'. I ran towards the basement as fast as I could. My heart was racing. I hated these vampires! They better not have done anything to my brothers. I opened the door and my youngest brother Jack was being held in the arms of a vampire. There were bites marks on his neck. Jake was screaming and hitting the vampire on the back. The vampire turned to face him. Jake fell back on his butt in surprise and fear as the vampire loomed over him like a dark cloud.

I held my sword out in front of me and ran towards the vampire. I skewered it on my sword and it dropped Jack on the ground. I removed my sword from the vampire's body and caught Jack before he hit the ground. His body was stone cold, pale and limp in my hands.

"No..." I whispers and tears formed in my eyes. I hugged his limp body tightly. Jake got up and hugged us also. I started to cry. How could someone be so cruel as to hurt an innocent little boy? Have they no soul? He did nothing to hurt anyone. The tears rolled down my face and fell onto Jack's body.

Suddenly he started to feel warm again. I looked at him. His face that was so pale had colour in it once again. Kara was standing in the doorway, "Well done Victoria, he will be ok."

"W...What d..d..did I do?" I stuttered all I did was cry and hug him.

Kara beamed at me but didn't reply. What is she hiding? How did I save him? This was all so confusing.

"Is he going to be a vampire?" Jake asked Kara.

"Nope, Victoria made sure of that," Kara answered with a smile.

I heard blood splatter against the wall.

Oh no... my parents. I pushed past Kara who was in the doorway and ran down the hallway. No this couldn't be happening. They had to be ok.

I dashed into the study. They weren't ok ....

... so much blood.
