Chapter 8
I sit at the mini table in my room and start to eat my breakfast. I turn on the news, hoping to see Spider-Man on. Unfortunately, he isn't, but I still keep the TV on anyway, just to have some sort of noise in here.
As I take a bite of my omelet, I think about Lily. I wonder why she's being so nice to me. I can't believe she's going out of her way just to buy clothes for me. Why does she care so much about me? Unless, maybe she just said that to get me to eat, so that I'm healthy and that she won't get in trouble with Nick. Maybe this is all fake, and she really doesn't want to be my friend!
About an hour later, while sitting on my bed, watching TV, I here a soft knock on my door. "Gwen, it's me, Lily!"
I get up and unlock the door. When I open it, I find Lily holding a Macy's shopping bag.
"I bought you a whole bunch of stuff!" she says, giving me the bag. "Just try them on. Whatever fits, keep. Whatever doesn't fit, just give them back to me and I'll return them."
I look inside the bag, seeing there really is a lot of clothes in there. Wow, they're all the types of things I'd normally wear.
"Lily, you didn't have to do this," I tell her looking back up from the bag.
"Yes, I did. I would go crazy too if I had to stay in a hospital gown for two whole weeks."
"Thanks. I'll pay you back as soon as I can, that is whenever Nick allows me to have money."
"No, please don't. It's on me."
"You serious?"
"Yes."
"Thank you!"
"Of course!"
"Do you want to come in for a little bit?" I ask to be polite. "Or do you have to go back to your job?"
"No, I'll hang out for a little," she replies.
"Okay," I smile letting her in my room and then shutting the door afterwards.
Lily glances over at the TV, seeing that I have Food Network on. The show that's on right now is showing how to make a mini chocolate house, which is my dream to live in.
"Chocolate house, huh?" she says. "That looks fun to make."
"And yummy to eat?" I add.
"You must be a chocolate person."
"More like the queen of chocolates! My dream is to live in a house made of chocolate."
Lily, laughing slightly, says, "Yeah, that would be pretty cool! Then you would never go hungry."
"Right?!" I exclaim laughing too.
After a moment, I ask, "So why are you doing this?"
"What do you mean?" Lily says confused.
"You know! Buying clothes for me. Making sure I eat. Wanting me to be healthy and live my life. Why do you care so much about me?"
"Why wouldn't I? Nick's being totally unfair to you. I think you deserve some kindness around here!"
"But don't you just care about doing your job and making Nick happy? I mean that's what the others seem to worry about."
"Well that's them, not me! And I'm not the only one who's on your side."
"Seems like that to me."
"Trust me! You've barely seen anyone."
"If you say so. Anyways, so do you know Peter? Have you talked to him?"
"No, I haven't. I only know him as Spider-Man, but he does seem like a nice guy."
"He's the nicest guy there is."
"I'm really sorry, Gwen. If there was any way I could help you, I'd do it. It's just, I don't think there is."
"I know. Thank you."
We're silent for a moment, not knowing what to say. I can tell she's on my side. She really wants to help. Maybe she can't get me out of here, but she can answer some questions.
"So, when I was in my coma, were you there when Peter was?" I ask
"No," she tells me. "I haven't seen him in person either."
"So you don't know who Nick told to tell Peter that I'm dead?"
"I know it was one of his assistants, but I'm not sure of the exact person."
"Okay. Do you by any chance know exactly what Peter and my family have been told?"
"Basically all I know is that they were told you died instantly and the doctors and nurses couldn't help you anymore. There was even a...." she pauses.
"A what?"
"Nothing."
"Please tell me."
Lily sighs before she continues. "They had a funeral for you."
Even though I'm not quite shocked, hearing those words come out of her mouth feels like there's a big hole in my stomach. I can't help but start crying again.
"Hey, hey, please don't cry!" Lily says in a comforting tone hugging me.
"I can't!" I say sobbing harder.
"This is why I didn't want to tell you."
"No, I'm glad you did," I say letting go. "I really appreciate you telling me this. It's great that I can count on you."
"Well I'm happy to inform you on anything, but I just hate seeing you like this!"
"I'm probably going to be like this for the rest of my life."
"Don't say that Gwen. You have to have hope. Remember your graduation speech?"
"You watched it?"
"Nick made us all watch it. He found it very inspiring."
"Good for him! He really needs hope that I'm not going to hurt him badly."
We laugh.
"Look, I'd want to hurt him too, but he's actually a good person at heart. I know you probably don't believe me. I wouldn't if I were you, but he really is. This is a very good organization. We really do help in saving the world. I have an idea! How about you change and get ready, and then I can show you around and you can see what we do? Sound good?"
"Sounds great," I tell her.
It's about time I get some answers around here!
