Chapter 3: Genomorphs
You must awaken. A voice spoke in my head. You must awaken now!
I woke up gasping for breath. "What?" KF says blinking, disoriented.
I looked around, and realized that we were all in tubes, like the ones we had found Superboy in. Our arms were shackled above us, but, thankfully, they didn't have the sense to take off my ring, so my mask was still on, shielding my green eyes from view.
Superboy was outside of our tubes, just staring at us. Creepy.
"What do you want?" Kid Flash asks rudely to Superboy. He doesn't answer, just continues to stare at us.
"Quit staring. You're creeping me out,"KF continues, obviously uncomfortable. "Shut up!" I shout to him.
"Uh, KF?" Robin calls to him. "Maybe we not tick off the guy who can fry us with a look?"
Aqualad tries to talk with Superboy, to appeal to his human side. If he has one.
"We only sought to help you."
"Yeah," KF decides to open his big mouth. "We free you, and you turn on us! How's that for grat-"
Robin cuts him off. "Kid, please, be quiet."
"I believe our new friend is not in control of his actions," Aqualad voiced his thoughts.
"What-What if I wasn't"? Superboy finally decided to speak. "He can talk?" Kid Flash asks us.
I was about to respond with yes, obviously he can talk, but Superboy beat me to it. "Yes, he can."
"Not like I said 'it'," mumbled KF.
"It's still rude," I said to Kid Flash.
"The genomorphs taught you telepathically," Aqualad guessed.
"They taught me much," Superboy explained. "I can read, write, I know the names of things," he continued.
"But have you seen them?" Robin asked. "Have they ever actually let you see the sky, or the sun?"
"Images are implanted in my mind, but no, I have not seen them." SB said sadly. Poor kid, I thought. We all looked at him with sympathy. I know what it feels like to be trapped, which is maybe why I felt like we needed to help him.
"Do you know what you are?" "Who you are." I corrected Aqualad. He looks at me apologetically. I seem to be the only one who sees him as a human being, not just an experiment.
He straightened up. "I am the Superboy, a genomorph, a clone made from the DNA of Superman, created to replace him should He perish, to destroy him should he turn from the Light." He said proudly.
"To be like Superman is a worthy aspiration," Aqualad said kindly to him. "But, like Superman, you deserve a life of your own beyond that solar suit, beyond your pod. Beyond Cadmus."
"I live because of Cadmus! It is my home!" Superboy suddenly became very defensive of his 'home.'
"Your home is a test tube." Robin deadpans. "We can show you the sun."
"Uh, pretty sure it's after midnight, but we can show you the moon," KF bribes.
"Along with the stars," I say. Stars were always the 'star' of the show in the sky, or at least that's what I think.
"And we can show you, introduce you, to Superman," Robin promises. Superboy's eyes widened, and he looked like he was considering our offer.
"No they can't." A man in a lab coat burst in the door, followed by a woman, also in a lab coat, and Guardian.
"They'll be otherwise," he searched for a suitable word, "occupied."
"Well,I have ADHD. I'm gonna need to be occupied with something." I tell the man.
"Activate the cloning process," The man says to the other scientist, obviously ignoring me. She scurries off to do as he asked, sitting down at the computer in the corner of the room.
"No thanks," Robin states smugly. "Batcave's crowded enough."
"By the way," I call over to Robin, " Tell Bats that I'm going to see that place one day, with or without his permission." I tried to point a finger at Rob, but it's hard when your hands are shackled.
He just chuckled, and shook his head at me.
"Shut up!" The male doctor hisses at me, obviously annoyed at my non-stop chattering and side comments. Hey, it's what I do. I mean, I live with Hal. Come on.
"And get the weapon back in its pod!" He shouts to Guardian. That doctor is rude. I'm gonna call him a Dicktor.
"Hey!" KF mumbles to us. "How come he gets to call Supey an it?"
"Help us!" Aqualad pleads with Superboy, in a last ditch attempt to let Superboy make his own decision.
"Yeah, Supes. Does the world really need another me?" I call to him.
Superboy looks conflicted. "Don't start thinking now," The dicktor tells Superboy.
"See, you're not a real boy. You're a weapon, and you belong to me! Well, to Cadmus, but same thing."
I roll my eyes. Typical power-hungry man. Literally all villains. Well, the ones that are men, obviously. I mean, you can get power-hungry girls, too, but..... I'm getting off track.
I tune back into the conversation.
"Now get back to your pod!" He shouts at Superboy. He lowers his head, seemingly defeated, and walks out of the automatic door.
The doctor nods to the scientists at the computer, and suddenly, these arm-like things come out of the hatches in out pods. They split into wires, and attach themselves to our chests.
They erupt into electricity, and I start thrashing around, writhing in agony.
"Agh!" I scream, the pain almost unbearable. Is this what death feels like?
The doctor said something to the other scientist and Guardian, but I was too busy trying to deal with the excruciating electricity coursing through me.
Superboy comes back through the door. "I thought I told you to get back to your-" The dicktor was cut off by Superboy punching him across the room with his left hand, and his right hand sent Guardian and the other scientist flying. "Don't give me orders." He growls out, even though the Dicktor was VERY much passed out.
"You here to help us, or fry us?" Kid Flash asks sceptically. Is the only reason he did all this, was to get in front in the line to kill us?
Superboy squints his eyes at KF, and nothing happened. "Huh," He said, deep in thought. "I don't seem to have heat vision, so I suppose helping is my only option."
"How generous." I mumble, sarcastically.
"Agh! Finally!" Robin breathes, jumping out from his pod, rubbing his wrists, obviously after picking the lock on his shackles.
"Way ahead of you, bird-boy." I smirked.
I had gotten out of mine before Superboy left, and was thinking of the greatest escape plan of all time, but Superboy beat me to it.
"Aw man!" Clearly annoyed, Robin turns to Superboy. "Lucky Batman wasn't here. He'd have my head for taking so long."
"Seriously? That's what you're worried about?!" KF butts in on our conversation.
"The whole League will have our heads after tonight."
Ignoring Kid Flash, Robin turns to me. "I'll free Aqualad. You get Kid Mouth. And Superboy, keep watch."
While I saluted, and was about to walk over to KF's pod, Superboy growled. "You don't give me orders either."
Wow, authority problems much.
I flew over to Kid Flash's pod, opened it, and created a blue lock-picker. I reached up, trying to unlock KF's wrists.
"It's okay, take all the time you need," He says seductively, or trying to be, at least, looking me up and down appreciatively. "I quite like the view."
I rolled my eyes, but even through my tanned skin, you could still see my blush, clear as day.
I finally unlocked him, and flew away as fast as I could.
"Thank you." Aqualad says to Superboy. He nods, awkward with the attention.
"You- you'll never get out of here! I'll have you back in your pods before morning." The Dicktor weakly shouts at us, trying wake Guardian up.
Ha, pathetic.
We were already through the doors, but Robin stopped, and threw four explosive discs, destroying our test tubes of DNA, so that that doctor won't be able to clone us. "That guy is not whelmed," Robin says, "not whelmed at all."
"What is with you and this whelmed thing?" KF asks the question we all wanted to know, as we keep running through the endless maze of identical hallways.
He doesn't answer, just keeps running. "We are still 42 levels below ground," Aqualad says, trying to change the subject to more important matters. "But If we can make the elevator-"
Aqualad gets cut off by the huge, white, horned Genomorphs, coming towards us. The first one immediately tries to stomp on us. KF, Aqualad, and Robin jump to the side to avoid the huge hoof-like thing, while I flew straight up to the ceiling.
I made a construct of a mallet, quite like Harley's, and smashed it against the first Genomorphs face. It reared back, more so annoyed than anything, and Superboy jumped up and punched it across the face with his super-strength.
I fly into the middle of the Genomorphs, and make a grenade. I threw it into the midst of them all, still flying at top speed, and it explodes, knocking a lot of them out.
I create a giant fist, glowing blue, just like every construct I make, and use it to push my way through the crowd of Genomorphs.
I see Kid Flash getting cornered by six of the Genomorphs, so I fly between them, and throw a javelin at one. It impales it right in the eye. It roars in pain, and falls down, blocking the path for the other G-gnomes.
I see Superboy smashing at least three of them into the wall, not realizing it was creating huge cracks in the hallway. The building might collapse.
"Superboy!" Aqualad shout from not too far away, as he shoots his water-bearers at the Genomorph closest to him, sending it flying across the room. "The goal is to escape, not to bury ourselves here!"
"You want escape?" He growls back, as he grabs an unconscious Genomorph, and tosses it at another two, blowing them out of the way. Don't want to be in front of him on Black Friday, I shivered at the thought.
He starts running towards the elevator, forcing his way through the Genomorphs, as Rob, KF and Aqualad follow him. I take up the rear, blasting the remaining Genomorphs with glowing blue energy.
Aqualad pried open the doors once again, bending the metal in the process. We look down into the dark abyss, that seems endless.
I immediately fly up about six storeys above the group, holding KF under the arms, while Robin starts to climb back up his rope.
Superboy grabs Aqualad by the waist, and jumps straight up, about thirty storeys ahead of us. We all expected him to start flying, but gravity started pulling him down.
They were falling at such high speeds that, they would surely die if they hit the floor, twelve storeys down.
I constructed a trampoline, and they bounced off it, going back into the air, giving Robin enough time to throw a Birdarang at Superboy. He caught it, and it attached itself to Robins rope.
"Superman can fly," Superboy said sadly, dissapointed that he wasn't exactly like his role model. "Why can't I?"
"Don't know, but it looks like you can leap tall buildings in a single bound," Kid Flash says with a sympathetic smile, as he tries to comfort the obviously saddened boy. "Still cool."
He nodded at KF, smiling slightly.
"Thank you." He said gratefully, and I think that's the only time he's said something sincerely.
"Uh, guys," Robin says, catching out attention, as a whirring noise sounds from above, "this'll have to be our exit."
It was the high-speed elevator, that was coming down, and would crush us if we didn't move, quick.
Aqualad and Superboy pried open the nearest metal doors, and we all rushed through, just in time. I checked the level we were on. Sub-level 15.
All the Genomorphs looked at us, attracted to the loud noises. My eyes widened. We need to get out of here.
"Left! Go left!" Superboy took the lead, seeming to know where to go. We all ran down the left hallway, following Superboy blindly.
"Turn right, right!" We run off to the right, a hallway that ends in a dead end. "Great directions, Supey," Kid Flash chastises Superboy. "You trying to get us repodded?"
"I-I don't understand....." Superboy seems genuinely confused, as if he thought something was going to be here.
"Don't apologize! This is perfect!" Robin states excitedly, as he thinks of a plan.
