Chapter 11: New mission
I ran into the main room of the mountain, still in my clothes from school. I sped through the living room, and into the kitchen where M'gann was baking something.
I hid behind the counter, stifling my laughter so that he wouldn't find me. Megan looks at me with a strange look, wondering what I'm doing.
"I pelted Wally with dodgeballs in Gym." I explained, M'gann laughing along with me. "And he just won't let it go."
The zeta tube announced KF's arrival, and I put my back against the counter, M'gann going back to cooking, pretending like she didn't see anything.
"Hey Babe, do you know where Alya is?" Wally asked M'gann, leaning on the counter, where I was almost dying holding in my laughs.
"I have no idea," M'gann puts on a fake confused expression, as she went back to pouring flour into a mixing bowl.
"I think she went to the training room."
I looked over to the side, where I saw Wally's face contort into an evil expression.
"She's dead." He punched his palm, and speeded off towards the training room.
I got up from the floor, high-fived M'gann, and walked to the living room, where Superboy was watching the TV. Well, he was watching static. I sat on the couch next to him.
"Oh! I love that show!" I said sarcastically to Superboy, him not even responding.
"Why do you watch static, when you can watch cartoons?" I asked him, tilting my head in confusion.
He turned to me, raising an eyebrow. "I like this show." He told me, and I think that was the first sentence he has spoken to me so far.
"Well, whatever floats your boat." I shrug, watching the static with him.
I eventually got extremely bored sitting there, doing nothing. I began tapping my foot against the floor impatiently, looking around.
It was obviously annoying him, as the muscles in his neck were strained in annoyance.
"Can you stop that?" He told me, trying not to lose his cool.
"Stop what?" I said innocently, suppressing a smile.
He gestured to my foot, that was still tapping the floor at a speed that would make Wally jealous.
"That foot thing. It's really annoying, especially when you have super-hearing."
I nodded with a look of realization. "Oh that. Okay." I stopped my tapping, and I heard Superboy sighing in relief slightly.
We sat in silence for a few more minutes, and it was peaceful, actually. I felt like we were actually bonding, connecting through the silence.
I knew that he was having problems with Clark, and he obviously wanted to talk about it, but I think he thought that he didn't have anyone to talk to.
"You know, being a clone isn't really that bad." I broke the silence, slightly scared of being punched. I turned away so that if he hit me, it wouldn't damage my amazing face.
When I turned back, he was looking at me quizzically, as if I was a problem that he just couldn't figure out, like how I look at a maths test.
"How would you know?" He asked defensively, crossing his arms.
"Well, I don't really." I admit, shrugging my shoulders. "But, Superman told me once, that because all of the JL have protégées, he would like to have one. So, I don't really see why he's icing you out."
"Please, what do you know about being iced out?" He scoffed, rolling his eyes.
"I wish I was iced out by my mom." I muttered, but, with him having super hearing and all, he obviously heard me.
"What do you mean?" He furrows his eyebrows, turning back to me on the couch. I put my head down, thinking back to when I lived with her.
"Well, you know how I've only been a sidekick for six months?" He nodded, as I'd already told my team some stuff about me.
"And, you know how I live with GL?" Another nod. I took a deep breath, shuddering slightly.
"Well, he's not my real dad." I tell him, sighing slightly. His eyebrows raise in surprise, but he doesn't say anything else, waiting for me to go on.
"Six months ago, I was living with my mom. She used to be amazing, always caring, and loving to me, and my dad. But, my dad was in the military, and he was killed in action." I put my head down, feeling tears gathering in my eyes, but I kept going.
"After the funeral, she became a completely different person. She'd constantly have men over, drinking and drinking until she was passed out.
She'd hit me, and not give me food for days. All I could do was wait until I was seventeen, until I could leave that hellhole. One night six months ago, when I was fourteen, I got my ring. I stopped a bank robbery, almost purely by accident, and GL found me.
He took me to Odym, the home of the Blue Lanterns, and agreed to train me to be Earths Blue Lantern. He took me in, too, and became the best guardian anyone could ask for.
And, ever since the team started, this has been the happiest I've ever been in my life."
He nodded, listening the whole time, and smiled at me. Smiled. At me. He has a nice smile, I don't understand why he doesn't show it more often.
"Thanks for telling me all that. It's made me feel better."
"Anytime." I nudged his shoulder with my elbow, both of us slightly laughing. We went back to watching the static, in comfortable silence, when Batman walked through the zeta tubes.
"Team, mission assignment." He ordered, walking towards the hangar. We rushed towards him, eager for something to do, while Megan flew behind us, bouncing in excitement.
I turned to Batman when we reached the hangar. "I'll go get Wally. He's in the training room." I told him, him nodding.
I can't believe Wally was still in the training room looking for me. He just can't give up, can he? I reached the training room, and opened the door. There Wally was, tiptoeing around the room, careful not to alert me if I was hiding.
He was checking everywhere; behind the punching bags, on top of the simulation chamber, on top of the trapeze.
I laughed slightly, causing him to look up from pushing the punching bag to the side, to see if I was there.
"Ha! I found y-" He was cut off by the punching bag swinging back towards him, knocking off of his feet. He was sitting down, rubbing his head and glaring daggers at the bag.
I was in fits of laughter, holding onto the doorframe to keep myself on my feet.
"Come on," I said through my laughter, beckoning him to follow me. "Batman has a mission for us."
I ran back to the hangar, standing next to Robin, who had appeared from nowhere, when Wally rushed into the room, suit on.
"Okay, I'm ready." He huffed, out of breath.
Batman gave him a death glare, and began.
He pulled up a photo on the computer. It was an island, with what looked like an industrial business on it.
"Isla Santa Prisca." He began, obviously talking about the island.
"This island nation is the primary source of a dangerous and illegal neurosteroid, a strength-enhancing drug sold under the street name Venom." the display changes to show the shots of the warehouse. "The infrared heat signatures indicate that their factory operating at full capacity but all shipments of Venom have inexplicably cut off. That's where this Team comes in. This is a covert recon mission only." He clarified, almost glaring at us.
"Observe and report. If the Justice League need to intervene, it will." Once again the profile changes back to the island map. "The plan requires two drop zones." The drop zones appeared on the map, one on either side of the island.
Robin steps forward, seemingly eager to ask a question. "Who's in charge?" He asked, bouncing on his feet.
Red Tornado and Batman exchange glances, before Batman turns back to Robin.
"Work that out between you." He nodded at us, and walked away with Red. Robin had a huge smile on his face as we walked to the bioship.
We get in, sit down in our now usual seats, and Megan lifts us off, flying at a very fast pace to Santa Prisca.
Dropzone one was Aqualad, going into the water and disabling the alarms on the island for us, while dropzone two was the rest of us, jumping off of the bioship, and venturing through the forests to spy on whatever was going on.
" Dropzone A in 30," M'gann told us, and Aqualad got up, adjusting his water bearers, and pressed his symbol in the middle of his chest, which turned his suit from grey and red, to navy and black. Incognito mode. Awesome.
"Putting the bioship in camouflage mode," she pressed a button, and the ship turned invisible.
I nodded at him in good luck. He nodded back, and turned to the hatch that opened on the side of the bioship, overlooking the vast blue ocean.
He jumped straight into the water, swimming quickly towards the island. After a few minutes, Aqualad gave us the ok to fly over the island.
"Dropzone B." M'gann called to us, causing us to stand, our seats disappearing into the ship.
I dimmed my glow from my suit. I had gotten better at that since the Roy mission, training at least three times a day for this.
Wally grinned at me. "Gotten better at that?"
I smiled sarcastically at him, crossing my arms. "Well, it's easier when people aren't pushing you into possible gunfire."
He laughs, and I do too. I point at his Kid Flash symbol, looking up at him.
"You gotta turn on incognito mode." I told him, him looking at me strangely.
"Okay," he nodded, and pressed the middle of the lightning bolt. His suit changed, turning from yellow and red, to black and grey.
"Woah," he mumbled, following me to the hatch, where M'gann, Superboy, and Robin we're standing, getting ready to jump.
M'gann's eyes flowed green, and two ropes morphed from the ceiling, that Kid Flash and Robin attaches themselves to.
"How cool is this?" Wally tried to impress M'gann, pressing his suit twice more.
"Very impressive," she nods, and she morphed her skirt and T-shirt into a full-length, tight black body suit, keeping he red X and her blue cape.
"Guess that's cool too," Wally mutters, turning away, while me and Robin snickered.
I turned to Superboy, knowing that he didn't want the camouflage.
"Hey Supes, it's not too late to try on the new stealth tech. Could be cool." I smirked, but he shook his head.
"No capes, no tights, no offense." He said shortly, crossing his arms.
"It totally works for you," M'gann stared dreamily at him, smiling. She realized what she said, and straightened up, smiling sheepishly.
"I-I mean, you totally do good work in those clothes." She stuttered. Smooth.
She knew that there was no coming back from that comment, so she just threw her hood over her head, and turned invisible, flying out of the ship.
Superboy looked uncomfortable, so I tried to change the subject.
"Cmon, we need to go help Aqualad."
Everyone seemed to wake up at the mention of our teammate, straightening up and getting ready to jump.
I was the first to jump out of the bioship, besides M'gann of course, free-falling for about ten seconds before flying swiftly to the ground.
Robin and KF came next, shooting down the ropes and sticking the landing. We all looked up, wondering why Superboy hadn't come down yet.
Suddenly, I saw a black figure jump out of the bioship, going downwards at such a fast pace that I thought it was a meteorite. Superboy hurtled towards the floor, colliding harshly with the earth, causing a sonic boom, and a crater in the dirt.
When the dust cleared, he was standing there proudly, arms folded smugly, and smirked at us.
"Knew I didn't need a line."
We rolled our eyes, mine more playfully than the boys'.
"And yet, creating a seismic event may not have helped much with the covert." Robin said sarcastically.
"Let's go." I ordered, flying off to the left, Wally and Robin following me, while Superboy went off to the right, where he would probably find M'gann.
