Chapter 10: School

I walked into Biology with Wally, who conveniently took that class too.
I went in the door, and was greeted by a tall, skinny man, with a wispy mustache that looked like he glued it on. He was wearing a blue turtleneck and jeans. He noticed me, and his eyes lit up strangely.

"Ah, you must be our new student. What's your name?" He asked way too enthusiastically, practically bouncing towards me, almost going nose-to-nose with me.

"Uh, Alya," I answered, a little taken aback by his bubbly attitude. It was nine in the morning, hoe could he be so energetic? I'm ADHD, and I still can't function properly this early.

"Well, Alya, since you seem to know my boy Wally over here," He slaps 'his boy,' on the back, who was grimacing at the nickname, pulling away from the teacher slightly, "You can be his lab partner. I'm Mr. Harris by the way."

I nodded, and was about to follow Wally to my seat, which was luckily in the back, but Mr. Harris held an arm out before me, stopping me from moving.

"Why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself, Alya." He asked, but it sounded more like an order. I couldn't say no anyway.

I took a deep breath, and looked to the pupils in front of me, my classmates, that seemed to be sizing me up, looking for weaknesses.
I stood a little straighter, narrowing my eyes slightly. Don't show weakness.

"I'm Alya Vivani. I'm from Coast City, and I'm fifteen." I deadpanned, and raised an eyebrow at Mr. Harris, silently asking him Was that enough?

He nodded slightly, and turned to the class. "Any questions for Miss Vivani?"

I felt my stomach turn. I wasn't socially awkward, it's just having everyone stare at me is nerve-wracking.
And now having to answer questions.
About three people raise their hands, peering cautiously at me over their desks.

He points to a boy with white-blonde hair. He leaned forward, looking at me inquisitively.
"Why do you come to school here, if you live in Coast City?"

That seems like an invasive question.
'Because I can Zeta tube anywhere I want to go, and I randomly chose this school.'

"My... Dad wanted me to go here." It felt strange calling Hal my dad. He was fine by me calling him by his name, but for all intents and purposes, he was my Dad.

Also, I didn't want to announce to the whole world that I was adopted. Not that I was ashamed of it, but I don't really want people to judge me straight away.

Mr. Harris points to a girl this time, with brown hair tied into a braid. "Are you a fan of Green Lantern?" She asked, referring to my shirt.

"Yeah," I said, shrugging. "He's good. But I prefer Blue Lantern, if I do say so myself. She's awesome."

I could hear Wally snort from the back of the room. Nobody paid attention to him though, this probably was normal for Wally.

A girl speaks up from my right, without being called on. She has bleached blonde hair, and crystal blue eyes. She seems like one of those rude populars at my old school.

She looked at me boredly, looking me up and down, obviously trying to find something wrong with me.

"Did you dye your hair? What are you, emo or something?" She spoke with a Brooklyn accent, her rough tongue cutting into my ears. I winced slightly, before answering her question.

"Nope, I was born with my hair. Were you?" I smirked at her. I didn't want to make enemies, but she was asking for it, and I just couldn't help myself.

The whole class gaped at me, and a few started snickering. Wally's reaction was the best.
He practically fell off of his seat laughing, slapping his hand on the table.

"Y-you can sit down now, Alya." Mr. Harris said nervously, gesturing to my seat, next to Wally.

I walked with a new confidence down the aisle, feeling the girls stare, and everyone else's, burning into the back of my head.
I sat down next to Wally, who was still laughing, and high-fived the hand he held out.

"That was amazing," He whispered to me, wiping stray tears out of his eyes. "Best thing I've seen all year."

"I aim to please." I laughed with him, and tuned back into Mr. Harris' lesson, already bored out of my mind with public school.

————————————————————————

Last class of the day, I thought as I got changed for my Gym class. We were allowed to wear our own running gear, so I chose an orange tank top, and black spandex shorts, with my grey running shoes.

As I tied up my hair back into a slick ponytail, a girl sat down next to me in the changing room.
She had long, wavy hair reaching her waist, and piercing blue eyes.
She smiled at me timidly, barely making eye contact. We sat there awkwardly for a while, neither of us talking, before she decided to break the silence.

"It was cool, the way you stood up to Sierra," she said, not even looking me in the eyes. Sierra, huh? She looks like a Sierra.

"I'm Alya," I decided to re-introduce myself. "And I don't take kindly to people who insult me." I smirked, laughing at the thought.

She smiles, finally looking me in the eye. "I'm Faun." She extends her hand for me to shake.

I do, and we hear the coach blow his whistle at us, screaming for us to 'Get a move on!'

"Cmon, Coach Daniels doesn't like late people." She walked out of the changing rooms, me following behind quickly.

We sit on the bleachers, where the rest of our class are. Coach blew his whistle, causing all of us to stop talking.

"Alright! Today we're going to play dodgeball!" He smiles crazily, and I look at Faun unsurely.
She just shrugs, and I turn back to Coach.

"So, who wants to be captains?" He asked, everybody but me and Faun raising their hands eagerly.

He spots me slowly sinking down, trying not to be seen, and it does the opposite of what I intended.
He points to me, and beckons me out of the stands.

I walk as slowly as possible, turning to face the class with a small frown on my face. He claps my shoulders, and only now seems to realize that he doesn't know who the hell I am.

"What's your name, New Girl?" He shouts into my ears, spit sticking to my face.
"Alya." I answer, wiping it off with my forearm.

"Alright Alya, and who will be the other captain?" He turns to the bleachers, about to point to another person, but Sierra, who was in this class too, slinks off of her seat, and stands opposite me, fire in her eyes.

"Okay Sierra! Since you're so eager, you can be the other captain! Now, choose your teams."

She turns to me, smiling fairly. "You can go first, Alya." She said my name with such venom that you would assume I had run over her favorite Chanel bag.

I nod, matching her searing glare with a cold gaze of my own. She brings the heat, but my speciality is ice.

I turn to the class, who are watching the whole thing nervously, and call Faun over straight away.
It seemed like she didn't have any friends here, and I felt the need to be her friend. I didn't really have any friends here either, except Wally, who was looking at me in outrage, offended he wasn't picked by me.
Faun walks meekly toward me, her red hair swishing in the ponytail she had kept it in.

Sierra scoffs at my choice of team member, and points at Wally, who's eyes nearly bulge out of his head. He almost sprints to her side, completely ignoring me.

I ended up with about ten more team members, none of whom looked very promising. I know it's not supposed to be that competitive, but Sierra has been pushing my buttons this whole day, and I wanted to show her that I wasn't backing down.

I lined up with my team on one end of the gym, Sierra's team on the other side. The balls were in the centre of the gym, gleaming in the sunlight.

I glared at Sierra, raising an eyebrow in challenge. She narrows her own, and the whistle blows. Both teams sprint toward the balls, and pull them to their respective sides, nobody threw one yet.

A boy on Sierra's team made the first move. He threw it at a girl on my team with such force, it sent her flying to the floor, clutching her stomach.

He laughed gleefully, obviously happy about the poor girls pain. Sociopath.
Sierra chuckled slightly, crossing her arms.

That's when the gym erupted into war. Balls were flying everywhere, knocking people down left and right. I dodged one that was sent my way, then sliding under another that was thrown blindly. I picked up a ball, looking up and choosing my target carefully.

I hit a girl with bright green hair, who honestly didn't look that interested, and she walked off to the bleachers, where she picked up a book and began reading.

I kept dodging, maneuvering my body left and right, my Blue Lantern training kicking in. Pretty soon there were about five of us left. Me and Faun on my side, and Wally, Sierra and the sociopath boy on her side.

Faun hadn't thrown the ball she had gotten at the start yet. She had basically hid in the corner for the whole game, making sure she wasn't hit. She plucked up the courage, and threw the ball at Sociopath Boy.

He didn't expect the ball to be thrown with such force, and it hit him on the shin, sending the boy hopping around, in obvious pain.
The bleachers erupted into laughter, while Faun finally cracked a smile.

"Good work, Summers!" He shouted to Faun, who was practically glowing with glee.

I swore I heard Sierra growl, and she threw a ball at me. I didn't move, waiting for the right time.
Just as the ball was about to sail past my ear, way away from me, I did something she didn't expect.

I caught it.

I smirked at her as Faun started clapping, and whooping for me, the people in the stands joining in. I laughed, basking in the glory, before I decided enough was enough.

My eyes hardened, and I threw the ball, with no mercy, at her. It hit her straight in the forehead. Her head snapped backwards, her nose already beginning to drip blood.

"Your gone, Sierra!" The Coach pointed at Sierra, who just screamed, stomping her foot.

"This isn't over, Vivani." She sneered at me, walking to the bleachers, where her loyal followers tended to her.

Me and Faun turned to Wally, who surprisingly hasn't thrown a ball at me yet.
"Ugh, Alya? Faun? Maybe we can talk about this." He said, backing up slightly, as we had all of the balls on our side, each of us holding two.

I smiled evilly at him, Faun cackling. We looked at each other, and shrugged.
At almost the same time, we sent all of our balls hurtling toward Wally, who didn't have enough time to dodge it, without it looking suspicious.
He was pounded viciously, ball after ball, hitting him anywhere we could.

"Alright! Alright!" He screamed as another one hit him in the back of the head. "You got me! I'm out!"

Me and Faun high-fived each other, pleased with our work. Our team rushed into the floor, cheering. I felt like these people never won anything before.

We got changed back into our clothes, and I walked to my locker, placing the books I didn't need inside.

"Did you really need to pelt me with that many dodgeballs?" A voice called from next to me. I turned around, and Wally was standing there, leaning against the locker next to mine, raising an eyebrow at me.

I laughed, closing my locker door, and shouldering my bag. "Yes, it was absolutely necessary." I told him as we walked through the doors leading outside.

"Well, you hit really hard!" He moaned, rubbing his shoulder where I hit him with a particularly rough shot.

"C'mon, lets get to the zeta tubes." I sprinted ahead of him, as he called after me, running quickly to catch up.

I reached the old, rusty telephone booth before he did, and ran inside, closing the clear door as he banged on it, groaning. I giggled, waving at him, as the computer announced my name, and I was zeta'd off to the cave.

Hey guys! Woah! Another chapter! I'm really trying to go fast with the writing. It's nearly summer where I am, woohoo! No school for three months!
