Chapter 44 - Bareback
"You really came to watch my lesson?" I ask, my brows pinched together.
Cameron grins. "Why of course. I wanted to make sure you'd be up for our bareback ride tomorrow."
My eyes widen, I totally forgot we made that deal. "And I'm guessing your answer is no?"
"The opposite actually," he still holds the grin on his face. "You have to go, you need to get some quality bonding with him."
I groan. "Noo, not after the disaster that happened today."
He rolls his eyes. "Oh come on it wasn't that bad." He places both hands on my shoulders. "Trust me, you handled it very well."
I glare at him. "Sureeee I did." I roll my eyes at him. "Every other rider had a perfectly good time with the gymnastics."
"Yes well, they've all had there horses for a while, and yours is very green." He tries to assure me. I open my mouth to retort put he places him finger on my mouth, shushing me. "And you did very well at the end, he had no hesitation afterwards."
I sigh, pushing his hand away. "Fineeee."
"Great!" Cameron clasps his hands together. "I'll see you tomorrow after lunch."
I sent him one last joking glare. "Bye Cam."
He winks as he walks away. "Bye Cal."
Dreamers all brushed and his Bridal is on. I'm making my way towards Blues stall, and my nerves are growing by the second. I spot Cameron leading a saddle less Blue with a smile on his face. Oh I am so not ready for this. And the thing is I've done tons of bareback before, but for some reason doing it with Dreamer is really scary.
"Alright Cal, are you ready?" Cameron has a proud grin on his face from getting me to do this.
"No." I reply, the butterflies in my stomach flying at a million miles per hour.
"Oh don't worry, it will all work out." Cameron assures me. "We're doing it in the arena, so nothing bad can happen."
"Mmh, sure." I nod slowly and sarcastically.
He walks to one of the arenas opening the metal gate for me. He smiles at me, pretending to bow, but I don't even find it funny. I'm just scared. I can see Cameron frown at my worry as he closes the gate. He then quickly uses the fence and thrusts himself onto Blue, who isn't startled at all. I lead Dreamer to the mounting block in the center, pausing to take a deep breath.
I climb up the two small step and place the reins over his head, and then placing my hands on his withers. He lets out a small snort, so I take one last breath and swing myself on. He lifts his head a bit, surprised by what I'm doing but other then that there's no reaction.
I smile, giving him the biggest pat on the shoulder. "Good boy."
Cameron's grinning, pride plastered on his face. "I told you so."
I shoot him a glare. I don't know why I was expecting Dreamer to do anything, I've cantered on him bareback before, that one time with the wolves. I guess that was a much more threatening time for both of us though.
"Ok I did it." I look towards Cameron's grinning face. "Can I get off now?"
Cameron chuckles. "No, your cantering today."
This results in a groan from me. "Please no, I'll try a trot and that's it." I ask Dreamer for a walk, and he's perfectly ok with it.
Cameron walks Blue up beside me. "You are aware to join them pre Olympic riders you have to be able to jump a course bareback right?"
My eyes widen, and I shake my head. "No."
"Yes, actually it quiet cool to watch." Cameron explains. "The top three times get to move up."
I nod, listening to him. "Oh great." I say sarcastically. "Also, that reminds me, can I come watch one of your lessons?"
He smiles. "Of course."
My brows wrinkle together, just remembering a question I thought of a while ago that if forgot to ask. "What do you even do in the other levels?"
Cameron scratches his forehead for a second, thinking. "Well the intermediates focus more on training the horse to do difficult things. Like slicing and practicing a lot of rollbacks." He explains. "I also know that the beginners work on mastering the basics, juniors is getting your horse in shape so grid work and courses, and advanced you work more on courses, and pre Olympic is mastering everything."
My eyes grow wide with each word he says. "Well that's a lot of stuff to remember."
"You also have to remember that once you hit intermediate, they can kick you out if your not promising a good future as an Olympian." Cameron states, clearly a little scared of that fact.
My eyes only widen more and the butterflies that vanished have now returned. "Since when can they do that?"
Cameron shrugs. "Since forever?" He raises a brow. "Not everyone can become and Olympian, but I'm sure you will." He winks at me smiling.
I nod slowly, very scared of what he's saying, and not paying attention to his compliment at all.
He then asks Blue for a trot, and starts circling around me in a sitting trot. "Shall we get on with it then."
I groan. "No..." I lie, steering Dreamer to follow him. I shoot him a glare. "I hate you."
"Mmh," he smirks. "We will see about that. Now try a trot."
I rolls my eyes. "Fine." I squeeze Dreamer a bit, getting prepared to trot. "But if I die it's your fault."
I squeeze him a bit more, and he transitions into the comfiest trot. I look down at his neck, and only then realize I didn't put a neck rope on. Oh well to late now. I sit comfortably on Dreamer, and it's nice that his withers aren't to high. He trots along happily, and I smile at the fact that he hasn't done anything. We trot a few circles to, testing my leg strength, and ow my legs are gonna be sore.
I do a few more laps, some of them posting too, and I stop to take a quick break. Cameron walks beside me with the hugest smirk on his face. He's giving me the 'I told you so look' and I glare at him for the longest time.
He turns Blue infront of me, blocking me to stop. "Are you ready to canter?"
"Probably not." I reply. "But I know your not gonna let me off this horse till I try."
I steer away from him and head towards the fence line. Ok, here we go. I ask for a trot again, and I wait until I'm past the corner before I ask for the canter. He speeds up for two trot stride before I feel his right leg goes forward and I fall into sync with his canter. We get the lead and I'm so in love with his canter. It's smooth and I can't help but smile. Other then the fact his head is raised a bit, he's completely fine. Wow, I'm really overreacting.
"Stick out your arms!" Cameron calls out.
"Are you crazy?" I yell back.
"Just try it!"
I roll my eyes and once I pass the corner I slowly stick my arms out. Dreamer turns to look at me for a second, before carrying on. I smile the biggest smile and it feels like I'm floating. The wind brushes through my hair and I'm not even listening to my surroundings, just enjoying this feeling.
I pick my reins up once I reach the corner, and do a few more laps with the reins. This is so much fun I'm so mad at myself for being scared of this. After a bit my legs get a bit sore so I stop him , and I walk towards a grinning Cameron.
"See?" He raises a brow. "I told you. I knew you could do it."
I smile. "Thank you Cam." I'm grateful that he's helping me. "You can canter and then we can walk out."
He nods. "Sure, but we're going on a trail ride to cool them out." He winks and canters off before I can get a word in.
He's just pushing his luck isn't he.
He canters a few laps and even does a lead change before walking and opening the gate. He lets me go through first and he follows. We go down a hill towards the cross country course., that is not the old one we found in the woods. Dreamer walks at a more fast pace so Cameron pulls Blue up to walk beside me.
"So where to?" I ask.
"Just around the cross country course." He replies. "Then we can head in."
I nod, looking to Dreamer who's looking at all his surroundings. "Hey are we aloud to use these?"
"The jumps?" Cameron asks. "Well I can, but you can't just yet. Would you like to try them?"
I nod. "At some point yes, when Dreamer and I are ready."
"Are you kidding you just cantered tackles, I think your ready."
"Thanks." I reply with a smile.
A silence fills us, not knowing what to talk about. Cameron though seems to have a question hiding, just waiting to roll off his tongue.
I sigh. "What is it?"
He hums. "Mmh?"
"You want to ask something, what is it?"
He shakes his head. "No I don't."
"Yes you do."
"It's just a little more personal." He sighs. "I just wanted to ask what your life is like at home, because I see you have to do your own stall, unlike the rest of us."
I let out my breath. "Yeah we're pretty poor after my dad left, but not that poor you know?" I explain. "I had to work for lessons and stuff, and that's why I've never had a horse before, although I did get to work with a lot of horses."
"Oh, well that's not great, I'm glad you still made it here." He gives me an assuring smile. "What about friends?"
"I had one close one, everyone else always called me a horse girl." I almost laugh at it. "But I never cared."
"And boyfriend?"
My smile falls from my face a bit. Now that's a bit more personal. "I had one, but we broke up because it was to embarrassing for him to be with a horse girl."
"Oh I'm sorry." It looks like Cameron's trying to frown, but is a little happy.
I laugh. "Don't be. We weren't together very long and it wasn't a sad break up."
"Oh, well I'm glad." He seems a bit happier then glad.
Is it because he wants to date me?
Who am I kidding we're just friends. Even though I literally have a crush on him. Only then do I realize we're back at the stables and are ready to head off in our own directions. We both dismount, flipping the reins over our horses heads. I walk past Dreamer so I am on the side Cameron's on.
"I guess I'll see you later." He has a small smile on his lips.
I watch as his eyes flicker to my lips for a second and I decide I'll test this 'we're not just friends' thing. I walk over and stand on my tiptoes, kissing him on the cheek. "Thank you for everything Cam." I try not to let a blush creep up o to my cheeks.
His smile widens to a grin. "Anytime."
I walk off with Dreamer for a few seconds, before turning around to see him grinning every wider, his fingers grazing his cheek were I kissed him.
I guess we will test the boundary's some more.
Hey y'all,
So sorry this chapter took like two weeks, I got mild writers block in the middle of it. I have nooo ideas for my next chapter so the next update might take a little longer.
I also realized that I REALLY need to re-read this book, because I forget a lot of minor things that happened, so that will take some extra time.
I went back and read a few chapters and OMG I really added some clique stuff in here I'm so sorry 😅
So this week I might also edit some of my old chapters while I read, so if you get the notification of an update just ignore it.
And as always HOLY COW 6.2k READS!!!!!! Thank you so much, it's so cool to see the numbers keep going up thank you so much for reading. I'm almost embarrassed so many people are reading my gross writing from a year ago, but as always thank you so much!
I'll try and update ASAP
