Chapter 43 - D.E.S.H. training

I meet up with Carmen, Abby and Scarlett I front of the horses stalls. They spot me and all have a mishevious grin in there faces.

"How did it go?" Abby asks.

"Did he kiss you?" Scarlett wiggles her eyebrows.

I roll my eyes and laugh. "No of course not."

"Oh that's to bad." Carmen says. "He kinda seems like a chicken to me. "

I giggle. "Yes he is."

"Why doesn't he just make a move?" Scarlett groans.

I jokingly roll my eyes at her. "Why hasn't Will made a move?"

Scarlett crosses her arms. "He's not shy, he'll make a move sooner then Cameron."

"Bet?" I say.

"Oh I know so." Scarlett says.

"Okay then." I say. "Also I do have to tell you guys exactly what happened."

"Oh tea!" Scarlett says making us all smile.

" well he woke up a bit...crazy you know?" I start to explain.

"No..." Abby says, looking confused.

" OK well he woke up and just started talking weird." I look down shyly for this next part. " then just kept saying how much he wanted to kiss me."

"OH MY GOSH!" They squeal.

"Maybe he'll make a move sooner then I thought." Scarlett adds.

"And then what?" Abby asks.

"Oh he just started talking about how much prettier I was in his dreams, but then I told him it wasn't a dream and... uh... he just kinda maybe called me gorgeous."

This results in the largest squeal I've ever heard. There all jumping up with joy and I'm just standing here blushing and ignoring all the looks.

Just then Sherri comes walking up to us.  "Is everything ok ladies?"

They calm down. "Yep yep everything is perfectly 100% amazing right now." Abby says.

"Great." She turns to me.

"Is Cameron all good?" She asks.

"You bet."

"Alright, well just wanted to let you girls know, that we're doing D.E.S.H. again this week." This causes Carmen, Abby and Scarlett to squeal.

"When is it?" Abby asks.

"This Friday." She says. "Good luck and train hard!" She says smiling before walking away.

I look at them confused. "What is D.E.S.H?"

"It's where the Beginners, juniors, intermediates and advanced get a chance to move up." Scarlett squeals.

"Basically if you place first against all of the other people at your level you get to move up. "
Abby says.

"So since were show jumpers, we will go against the show jumper juniors." Carmen explains. "The other events are Dressage and eventing. Since that's what we also train here. Then you conpete against people your level in the same skill. It's so much fun!"

"Oh my gosh that's so exciting!" I say. "How high for we jump?"

"I think around three ft and three foot three." Abby says.

"It's literally so much fun. There's food set up every where! It's like a real competition." Scarlett says very excited.

"Oh I love food." I smile.

"The most exciting thing is you get a chance to move up." Carmen explains. " I do love the food though."

"It's literally going to be like the fair!" I squeal excitedly.

"Ya exactly!" Abby says matching my excitement.

"Mmmh food." Scarlett says and we all giggle.

"Let's tack up shall we, so we can train?" Carmen says.

"Yes let's work our hardest today guys." Abby agrees."

I walk to Dreamers stall and bring him out. I tie him to his stall and then run to grab his tack. I come back and placed the tack on their little hooks and stands. I brushed him off and then pick his hooves .I start to tack him up doing his saddle first, and then his bridal. When I'm done putting on his bridal and I'm starting to do up the buckles, he starts to lick my hand. I rub his neck in smile at him.

He's come such a long way, in such very little time. I really trust him a lot now.

I take my hand away and continue doing up his bridal, when I'm done I pull the rains over his head and start walking him towards the arena. Scarlet, Abby, and Carmen, all follow me to the gate. It looks like we've all finished around the same time.

We all mount up on the mounting block and then start walking around. We walk about five laps and then start to walk in figure eights.

Derek then starts setting up a line of small jumps. Yesss I love gymnastics.

Crap. Dreamer.

He's never done this before. Suddenly my happier ness from being back in the saddle morphs into worry. Today's gonna be one crudtacular lesson.

Derek asks us to pick up a trot and Dreamer responds to my voice and leg quickly. Acctully, I think we were the first ones to pick up a trot.

Then we work in doing extended trot through the center over some polls which Dreamer does amazingly. It's almost like we're walking in clouds.

We do this several times and soon a smile erupts on my face. We are then told to do a sitting trot around the outside which we all do.

I remember what you first found Dreamers trot so hard to sit but now I can just feel how my seat bones hit the saddle in just the right way. I sit easily and move so well with Dreamer.

It's almost like in sitting on a sofa chair, perfectly still. An even bigger smile erupts on my face when Derek calls for a halt and we do it so quickly I can't even blink.

What a dressage super star.

Derek then calls for a halt to canter transition, which I am surprised by because we don't do it that often. And for once when I ask, Dreamer has a fit. He clearly can't figure out how to move his feet from a stationary gait to a fast gait. He rears once, trying to burst into a canter. He does, and I quickly sit down in my saddle and squeeze so that I don't fall off. He bolts down the one side, and I quickly steer clear of all the other riders cantering around.

"Steaaady." I tell him calmly. Slowing him down with my seat and by using my reins.

He calms down quite quickly, going back to a nice calm canter. I can see the other riders peel there attention away from me as Dreamer settles. I do a quick half seat, just to give him a pat on the neck before returning to my regular full seat.

"Trot!" Derek calls out a few minutes later.

The transition it pretty well done when I ask for it, although at first I'm on the wrong diagonal. We only trot a bit before Derek asks for a halt and then a reverse. We do another canter transition, this time walk to canter, which Dreamer has an easier time with. He still throws his head up for a second but breaks into it easily. We trot for a moment before walking, letting all of our horses take a break.

Derek walk up and down the arena locking eyes with each one of us. "Today we will be working on grid work. There are five total jumps but we will start with three." He explains with a stern expression. "The striding is a bounce, then a two stride to a single, and when I put up the other jumps it's a one stride and then a two stride to an oxer."

Anddddd now I'm scared. We're starting of with a bounce, which I have definitely never done before. There set at some big cross rails, while the single is probably 85 centimetres. My nerves leave shiver all down my body, but I make sure that I don't get to tense.

"Alright Abby, circle a trot and then go over the exercise." Abby obviously has to go first since she's at the front of the line.

She trots the bounce easily, but her two stride is a bit short because she didn't go fast enough to the first fence. Derek corrects her using the words I just thought. She nods, and the next rider goes.

My nerves only increase as the line shortens, and soon it's my turn. Derek nods at me to start and I break into a trot. I turn a circle to get a nice set up to the first fence. But I turn to late. Dreamer didn't have a good view of the jump and spooks, refusing the fence. I sigh, circling in a trot and avoiding Dereks eyes.

I turn towards the cross rails again, this time with a much better setup. Dreamer is still unsure, and slows down to much before stopping suddenly and throwing his head in the air. He then rears away, and I can feel myself get thrown off balance. My breath hitches, and when he calms down I sit back up. I sigh again, this time stopping to get feedback from Derek.

"Your more nervous then he is. If you calm down, he will too." Derek assures me. "Take a deep breath and try again."

I nod, slowly walking off in a circle. This is so embarrassing. Everyone is waiting for me. My eyes look around my surroundings, and in front of me is Cameron with a small smile. My jaw loosens, he's been here this whole time!? Even after what happened this morning? He gestures for me to come to him, and I do.

"Hey," he smiles sadly, which means fear is definitely present on my face. "Take a deep breath, leg on, and just shake it out ok?"

I nod, before turning away and taking a deep breath. I trot a circle, taking one last deep breath and putting my game face on. Let's do this. I squeeze my legs together, and Dreamer has locked his eyes on the jump. He slows down a bit so I press my heals down and squeeze.

I feel the familiar feeling of a bounce, going into a quick two point. I land with a smile on my face and get ready to jump the single. We fly over it and I look to Derek who has a small smile.

I did it.
