Chapter 23 - Side lines

I wake up to the sound of Abby and Scarletts alarm clock. We all groan together, not wanting to get up. I sit up and grab my crutch before I stand up and grab some clothes from my dresser. I put on some high waisted black leggings and a red crop top. I thought that because I'm not riding that I might as well dress nicely.

I walk to the bathroom and put on some makeup, before leaving with Abby and Scarlett. They start to tack up, so I grab an apple from the cafeteria. I walk back to the stables and give the apple to Dreamer. By the time I get back, there already almost done tacking up. It must have taken me a while to walk over there, due to me having a hurt leg.

This morning I decided I would watch there lesson since I have nothing better to do. I follow them when they walk towards the arena, and stand next to the fence.

I watch as they do walk, trot, Canter, and They do it flawlessly. Some other riders take a few seconds to get there horses to listen, and one even bucks. Derek sets up a vertical in the middle that looks to be about 2 ft.

He instructs the riders to jump over it. Abby and Scarlett go first, jumping over it flawlessly. The rider after them has there horse refuse to jump it and they fall off. The Dutch warm blood chestnut stallion looks scared out of its mind. This causes Derek to yell at him, and I can't help but let's put a small giggle at the lol on the boys face. He looks so frightened.

I look across the arena and see Claire and Samatha, Victoria's besties, giggling from across the arena. Surprisingly I haven't seen them in a while, and I'm glad. My face is taken up by a frown, because it's clear there making fun of him. I look back to The scene in front of me.

Derek makes him hop on the horse again, and to try it again. The horse refuses, but the boy doesn't fall off. he just try's again. The horse jumps this time, but knocks over a poll. Derek smacks his face.

"Do you even know how to ride!" He yells. "Or do I need to bump you down to the Learners?"

"Y-yes s-sir. I-I know how to r-ride." He stammers. Clearly he's new.

"Well then do it properly! Your wasting the other riders time!" Derek yells.

The boy canters around and jumps over the jump properly this time, which results in a smile from Derek.

"Good, now everyone continue one." He instructs.

I keep watching Abby and Scarlett, they go over the jump perfectly. The other riders to pretty well to. Then Derek raises the poll a bit. Abby and Scarlett jump over it like it wasn't even raised, but then the boy tries it. The horse stops in front of it, and Dereks face erupts in anger.

"Why isn't your leg on?" Derek yells. "He's afraid of the jump and so are you! Get over it and jump it!"

The boy tries again, and this time jumps it, but when he lands, the horse bucks him off.

Derek marches up to the boy. "You need to get him to jump! Do I need to ride him to show you?"

"No sir." The boy says nervously.

"Good. Now try again." Derek says sternly.

He approaches the the jump again and when he goes to jump, the horse rears. Derek bursts into anger.

"I swear! How am I supposed to make a good rider out of you! Your horse is scared of the jump because your scared of the jump! Do I need to get someon-" Derek locks eyes with me and smiles. "Calli! Care to come teach this horse a lesson?"

I smile back. "You know I can't ride right now." I say, holding up my crutch.

I look up and see Claire and Samatha eyeing me, but I ignore them.

"That's to bad." Derek says. "Come into the arena."

I open the gate and walk in with my crutch before standing next to Derek. Derek looks over at the boy.

"You see this girl turned an absolute terrible horse into an amazing one in only two weeks!" Derek says happily. "So I hope you can see that you'll be able to transform your horse into a good one eventually."

Derek walks over to the boy and puts a hand on his shoulder. "Lucas, I'll see you in learners tonight at four."

The boy sighs and grabs his horse and walks it out of the Arena.

"Now keep on jumping!" Derek instructs.

***********

When the lesson is over, I follow everybody out. I walk towards the stables and see the boy putting his horse in the stall. I decide I'll talk to him, because I was him once.

"Hey!" I say, catching his attention.

"Hey." He says, sounding sad. "Why are you coming to talk to me?"

"Just wanted to let you know I was we're you were once." I say.

His eyes go wide. "Really? But Derek was talking about you so fondly."

"Yeah, I guess, but trust me, my first lesson was way worse then your lesson today."I say.

"I don't think you lesson could have gone worse." He sighs.

"Oh it was. Try having your horse not even let you mount." I say remembering that lesson.

"Oh wow, I guess it could be worse then." He says.

"He wouldn't even trot, let alone jump!" I say laughing to myself.

"Oh, that is terrible." He replies. "Are you a learner?"

"Yes I am." I say.

"will I be seeing you at the lesson tonight?" He asks.

"Nah, I can't ride for the next week. Thanks to my stupid leg." I grumble.

"Oh what happened?" He asks, a little concerned.

"Wolf bite." I shrug. "My horse ran away and when I was helping him escape from the wolf it bit me."

"That's terrible!" He says. "I'm surprised there only giving you a week to heal."

"Well thank god for that." I say. I spot Cameron up ahead eyeing me and Lucas. When he notices me looking at him he smiles at me. "Alright well I have to go." I wave bye before walking up to Cameron.

"Why are you so grumpy?" I ask him.

He looks at me confused. "What are you talking about?"

"You we're glaring daggers at Lucas, the boy I was talking to." I say.

"No I wasn't." Cameron lies.

"Don't deny it, I saw you." I say, pointing a fingers at him.

Cameron groans. "Fine! He was just looking at you like Cupid had stuck a billion arrows in his chest!"

"Oh, your being an over protective friend." I say, rolling my eyes. "He doesn't like me!"

"I'm not being over protective!" Cameron practically shouts. "And he does like you."

I roll my eyes again. "Well you don't have to worry, I don't like him."

"Good." Cameron whispers, and it was clearly meant to be unheard, but I heard him anyways.

"So... did you come to talk to me about something, or did you just see me talking to Lucas and get mad?" I ask.

"Yeah I was trying to find you to apologize about last night..." he sighs. " ...your right, I did over react, and you knew I would."

"Yes I did." I say and he sends me a joking glare.

"I'm sorry for yelling at you and basically having a panic attack." He says apologetically.

"Well I accept your apology." I say smiling.

"Great!" He says excitedly. "But Can I just ask you one thing?"

"Sure." I reply.

"Did you plan on telling me?" He says quietly.

"Of course!" I say. "I was going to tell you today actually, but you already know."

"Oh phew." He says.

"You seriously thought I wouldn't tell you?" I say a little concerned.

"I don't know. I guess I just wanted to make sure." He says.

"Well know you made sure." I smile at him. "So now I have to go."

"You you later Cal." He says as I walk off.

I smile. "Bye Cam!"
