Chapter 12 - Bucked off

I make it to the arena, and see Derek standing there, checking his watch.

"Your late." He says angrily.

"Sorry." I reply, looking down.

"Mount up." Derek instructs.

I go up to the mounting block, and put my foot in one stirrup and Dreamer walks off. I jump off of him and bring him around again. This time I swing my leg over immediately while he's walking off. I make him stop, and then I make him back up to the mounting block. I make him wait there for about ten seconds before I walk off. I look over at Derek and see him look disappointed, even though today he didn't buck or rear.

I walk around a bit and Dreamer listens. I see Derek set up a cross rail in the middle. Derek looks back up at me.

"Trot."

I squeeze a little bit and hold my reins tight. Dreamer doesn't blot, but he bucks and bucks. I squeeze my heals in, and he stops bucking, but then bolts. I shorten my reins and start doing half halts. He slows down to a weird collected canter, which is no where near a trot.

"Slow him down." Derek says. "Tighten up those reins and tell him to trot."

"Trot." I say and pull back on the reins a bit, and also trying to change into a trot rhythm.

He slows down almost to a trot, but still not quite there.

"Give him a jerk and tell him to trot!" Derek yells.

I don't get the time to, because Dreamer bolts around the arena.

"Make him stop!" Derek yells, which only makes Dreamer go faster.

I pull hard on the reins, and Dreamer stops in a couple of strides.

"Come here." Derek says and I walk into the middle of the arena.

I stop him right infront of Derek, and Dreamer pins his ears.

"What's his back story? Breed?" Derek asks, frustrated.

"He was abused, and uh, I don't know his breed." I answer.

"I see. Well I'll  have the specialist that will tell you what breed he is." Derek says.

"Thank you." I reply.

"I want to try him, I can handle it." Derek says.

I look at him wide eyed. "You want me to dismount?"

"No, I'm going to ride when your on the horse." He says sarcastically.

I dismount, and hand him Dreamer. "Good luck." I say.

"I won't need it." Derek says, and take the reins.

He walks toward the mounting block. And puts one foot in the stirrup. Dreamer starts to move, but Derek pulls on the reins and stops him. He swings his other foot around, and asks Dreamer to walk, which he does.

"See?" Derek says.

I stand in the middle of the arena, suppressing my awe. Dreamer hasn't listened to me when mounting yet. Then I remember he hasn't gotten to the hard part. Trotting.

"You must get your horse under control." Derek tells me. "In order to do that, you must get respect and trust from your horse."

I nod my head, almost grinning because I know what Derek is going to do next.

"Watch and learn." He says. He asks Dreamer to trot, and...he bolts.

Derek immediately pulls on the reins. "Woah!" He says.

Dreamer doesn't stop, and I try to hide my amused face. Now he's realizing how hard this is.

Derek pulls on the reins hard and asks Dreamer to stop again, which only makes him slow down a bit before bolting again.

"Bad boy!" Derek yells and gives Dreamer a jerk.

For a second, Dreamer stops, and just stands there. Derek lets out a sigh.

He starts to talk out of breath. "See that's how you do-"

Dreamer starts bucking. He kicks his leg out side ways before doing full on big bucks around the arena. Derek surprisingly staying on, and is handling it.

"Woah!" Derek says pulling on the reins.

Dreamer stops again before starting to rear over and over again. Derek kicks Dreamer, and  Dreamer starts to buck again. I can tell that Derek is starting to get tired, based on how he's flying out of the saddle. Derek kicks again, and Dreamer bolts around.

Dreamer reaches a very fast gallop and steers towards the cross rail in the middle. He flies over it, and when he lands, he bucks like crazy.

Derek wasn't expecting that, so on the fourth buck, he flies off the saddle. He lands on his side on the ground next to Dreamer.

Dreamer stops bucking immediately and then stares at me, before looking down to Derek.

I run up to Derek, who I can tell is some what fine.

"Derek?" I ask, worried.

He slowly sits up, rubbing his side. "I'm fine."

"Oh good." I say, and help him up.

He looks at me. "That horse is difficult."

I nods my head, not saying a word.

Derek continues. "He's going to need a lot more work..."
