Chapter 4
I do not own Naruto
.........................................................
"Mom, Dad, why are those people being so mean to that boy?" I asked, pulling at my Mom's hand to point towards the blonde boy which was just pushed out of a stall.
My parents turned to look in the direction which I was pointing in. Their smiles dropped and their eyebrows pulled down in concern as they exchanged glances towards each other. There was a strange look on my mother's face, she looked as if she was pained despite being completely fine physically.
"For reason's that can't be spoken of, but they are in the wrong." My Dad said, kneeling down to be at my height. "They're adults that are reacting cruelly to a child for a reason that was in nobody's control. I don't want you to take example from them, if you get the chance to be friends with that child, please do so. I'm sure he's lonely and could use a friend."
My attention drew over towards my mother who began to walk away from us. Her pace didn't slow as everyone around us began to whisper as she approached the blonde boy. Instead she offered a kind smile and knelt down while offering out her hand towards him as he had fallen when he was pushed out of the stall. Her lips moved as she told him something. He blinked up at her, glanced down at her hand, then shuffled himself away and stumbled back up before taking off. I blinked in confusion as I was sure I saw tears fall out of his eyes as he clenched his jaw and ran.
My mother staying in her kneeling position for a moment, her shoulders sagging as she watched the boy run away. After a moment she stood up, looked towards the stall owner and frown at him. Shaking her head in disappointment she turned to walk back towards us. Again her face looked pained and sad, however she quickly placed a smile on her face as she met my eyes.
Holding out her hand she took mine, her eyes looking down at my hand for a moment before she looked back at me with a small smile. "Ne, Yuki, you want to help me cook dinner?"
Immediately a big smile formed on my face as I forgot about the crying boy and I nodded my head. "Yes! Can we make sushi rolls!"
A small chuckle escaped her as she shook her head, "We can try."
.....................................................................
My eyes shot open as dread filled me, my breathing had picked up. That same day my parents and my clan had been murdered. I was just thankful I didn't have to relive the whole thing again.
With a groan I rolled out of bed and began to get ready for the day. We had our survival test with our new teacher. Thankfully I had managed to wake up at the right time.
I put on my ninja outfit, a short sleeved purple kimono that went over my lilac undershirt and black leggings, with a pink sash on my waist which was was lined with mesh netting armor. Under that I had my netting, and my ninja shoes.
Lastly I added on my weapon pouch, and my headband. Once I was satisfied with myself I took one pill. I headed for the kitchen, simply taking a apple I headed out for the training grounds. Since our teacher was a jounin I'm sure he will have put up a difficult survival test for us, hopefully Naruto will work with me.
Naruto's the only one on my team that I can really count on. While Sasuke is surely strong, I don't see myself being able to count on him to have my back anytime soon. Sakura, well I don't think she would go out of her way to help me if I really needed it.
I ended up arriving at the training grounds at the same time as my team mates. Sasuke, not surprisingly, didn't seem the slightest bit tired. I wonder if he had woken up earlier because of some bad dreams like me.
Sakura, while she was awake, was far to tired to want to start a conversation. In my case, start a fight. For that, my day was already starting off better.
Then there was my best friend. Poor Naruto appeared as if he was still sleeping. I'm positive that is a snot bubble forming in his nose. Had he slept walked here?
True talent.
......................................
We've been waiting for a few hours now, and our teacher was late. Again.
Perhaps we should have assumed he would be late, considering he hadn't tried to be on time yesterday. First impressions do matter, and if he wasn't willing to be on time then, then we shouldn't have assumed he was going to be on time now.
I looked down at Naruto, who had laid down a couple of hours ago and decided that he would just sleep. Kneeling down, I rested my elbow on one of my knees and my head on my hand. Reaching out my free arm I softly poked Naruto's whiskered face. The only response I received was a snore. In case Kakashi showed up soon I figured it was best that I at least woke Naruto up.
"Naruto-kun." I murmured, poking his cheek again. "Get up."
Thankfully this time he responded with a groan. Opening his eyes he glared at me, which I happily responded to with a smile. "Good morning, Naruto-kun!"
He looked around, taking notice of Sakura and Sasuke before looking back at me. "Hey, where's Kakashi sensei dattebayo?"
I shrugged, "He told us to be here early, but he seems to be running a few hours late." I placed a finger to my chin in thought.
It didn't take long for us to grow impatient. At least, it didn't take Naruto, Sakura, and I to grow impatient. The three of us were sitting in a circle, all of us having a irritated expression on our faces. Sasuke, it seemed, had not grown as impatient as us and was still perfectly fine with standing and waiting.
His expression of calmness only seemed to irritate me more. Glaring at him I muttered, "How can you stand for that long?"
He didn't even look at me, much less respond to me. I should have expected as much. The Sasuke that I had been friends with in my younger years wasn't the same Sasuke that is here. This one doesn't need friends, he's arrogant and thinks he's better than everyone else.
Before I could finally give him a piece of my mind, our teacher finally made his appearance. With one hand in his pocket, Kakashi raised his free hand in a simple wave. "Hello." He mumbled calmly.
Naruto and Sakura jumped up pointing their fingers at him. "You're late!" They shouted.
He didn't even pause to think of a reply, "Oh, well you see a black cat crossed paths with me. So I had to find a different rout here." He closed his eye, and it seemed to be that he was smiling at us.
"Yeah right!" Naruto and Sakura shouted together.
I nodded my head thoughtfully at Kakashi. "I believe you sensei," I answered, "You seem too lazy to go through the trouble of making up a story." It seemed as though Kakashi decided to disregard my comment completely.
"Now then, for our test." He pulled out three bells from his pocket and held it up for us to see. "It's simple really. All you have to do is take these bells from me." He paused to place a alarm on top of one of the three stumps. "Before this timer goes off at noon, of course."
I was going to ask the question all of us were thinking, but instead looked at Sakura. Who already had her mouth opened and was already asking the question. "But sensei, there are only three bells, and there is four of us."
At least she can be useful to me this way.
Kakashi nodded, "Yes, that way, one of you will be tied up to that stump and be sent back to the academy. Of course, if none of you are able to get the bells you all will be tied to the stump and watch as I eat my lunch in front of you."
He paused to hear the growls of hungry stomachs. It was clear as to why he told us not to eat breakfast now. Even with the mask, I could imagine him smirking. "Now then, you are allowed to use any weapon. Remember, you will not get the bells unless you are prepared to kill me."
"But sensei, that's dangerous! You could get hurt!" Sakura shouted in disagreement at our sensei's request. I couldn't help but stare at her in annoyance.
"Sakura, I doubt a jounin could get hurt from some little genin." I said, which caused her to glare at me. Apparently she didn't exactly agree with my reasoning, just as much as I didn't agree with hers. It was too early and I was too hungry for us to argue. She must have thought the same thing as she didn't comment further against me. I glanced back at Kakashi studying the man.
I know in fact I won't be able to get a hit on him. Which means it's probably the same as the others. I frowned in thought, how exactly does he expect us to get the bells from him? He's in a whole other league than we are.
Isn't he just setting us up to fail?
Beside me Naruto laughed loudly, "How can you dodge a attack when you can't even dodge a eraser?!"
Kakashi wasn't amused. However, instead of ignoring his comment he placed his hand on his chin. "Class clowns aren't much of a threat."
That comment only angered Naruto, who suddenly pulled a kunai and charged at Kakashi. I froze as Kakashi had already turned Naruto around, and positioned Naruto's hand that was holding the kunai at Naruto. His movements were fast and precise. He made it look effortless.
Naruto's eyes widened as well as he started to comprehend what just happened. I tensed for a moment, but relaxed again as I reminded myself that Kakashi meant no ill will on Naruto. He was our teacher, so in a way he was teaching us something. Of course, at the moment, I have no idea what that is.
Kakashi looked at Naruto, "Hold on, I haven't even said start yet." He chided. "However, since you came at me with the intention to kill, how do I say this." He paused to pretend to ponder his thoughts. "I'm starting to like you guys."
"I think the fact that you're starting to like us because of Naruto's intention to kill you is concerning." I mumbled, sighing and shaking my head.
He released Naruto and took a step back. "Start." Kakashi simply said, which had everyone jumping off to a hiding spot.
Settling in my spot on a tree branch I looked behind me to grin at Naruto, only to notice that the idiot Uzumaki wasn't there. Looking back at the clearing in front of me I noticed Naruto standing with one hand on his hip and the other hand pointing at Kakashi. Our teacher looked at the trees then at Naruto with a dull look.
"You and me right now! Fair and square!" Naruto shouted.
"You know, compared to the others you're a little.... weird." Kakashi muttered dully, not impressed with Naruto's straight approach.
"The only thing weird is your hair cut!" Naruto growled, charging at him. "I'm going to crush you, dattebayo!" I resisted to urge to run to Naruto's aid. Right now I needed to come up with a plan first.
"Lesson one, taijutsu." Kakashi reached into his pouch, which made Naruto stop in caution of what he was going to pull out. Seeing a book being pulled out only forced a sigh out of me. He really wasn't taking Naruto seriously. Which only made me wonder more, how did he expect us to get the bells when he knows we weren't going to work together due to the number of us compared to the number of bells.
"W-What? Why are you reading that book?!" Naruto shouted angrily.
"Hmm, why?" Kakashi muttered dully. "Well to see what happens of course. Not that it will batter if I fight you." He was taunting Naruto on purpose, which was starting to annoy me as well. I didn't exactly take Naruto being taunted or made fun of very well.
With a loud cry, Naruto ran at Kakashi with his hand balled up in a fist. Not taking Kakashi's speed into consideration, Naruto blinked as his enemy was no longer in front of him. Rather it seems that our sensei had easily managed to get behind Naruto, and was now forming a hand sign.
If I was correct, it was the hand sign for a fire style jutsu. However, I sensed no chakra being concentrated, I sat confused as Kakashi sat behind Naruto.
"Don't let your enemies get behind you." Kakashi chided.
"Naruto get out of there! He's going to demolish you!" Sakura shouted, who happened to be under me. Giving away my location as well as her own, she wasn't exactly as bright as she appears.
I looked down to glare at her, but quickly looked back up as I heard Kakashi. "Too late! Leaf's secret finger jutsu: a thousand year's of death!" Kakashi shouted, bring his hand forward... and shoving it in Naruto's butt. My eye twitched as Naruto went flying into the river. Did we have a perverted teacher?
If we did, do I go to the Hokage to report him?
I sighed quietly, with my location no longer hidden I needed to move and get away. Perhaps I can figure out the hidden meaning behind this test. After all, it was obvious that one single genin wouldn't be able to land a hit on Kakashi.
................................................................
When I had just gotten settled in I saw Naruto upside down in a tree. It appears that their fight was over for the moment, which left me with a chance to help out Naruto. Looking around I made sure nobody was around before quickly approaching the tree with a kunai in my hand to cut the rope.
"Yuki-chan?" Naruto grinned when he saw me. "Help me down, dattebayo!"
I only nodded, an idea coming to me as I threw the kunai at the rope cutting it. Naruto landed on his head, which was followed by a complaint of pain. "Naruto-kun, I don't think we'll be able to get a hit on Kakashi sensei if we work alone. I know there is only three bells, but if we work together the two of us might be able to get a bell."
He rubbed his head, looking at me confused before shaking his head. "No thanks! I'll be just fine, I just need to eat something, I can't think when I'm so hungry dattebayo!"
I opened my mouth to respond to him, but he was up and already running away. "Thanks for helping me out, Yuki-chan!"
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "Yeah, you're welcome." I muttered in annoyance.
"Hmm, so you decided to help Naruto." I jumped, twisting on my heel to look at Kakashi, who was still reading his book.
I nodded, "He looked like he needed it."
"Sakura didn't try to help him, so why should you have?" He asked.
"First, I'm not Sakura." I frowned at the comparison. "She's obsessed with the Uchiha. Second, Naruto-kun is my friend, I'm not going to leave him if he needs help." I slide my feet apart and tense my muscles to get ready to fight.
He noticed my change in poster. "Oh, are you going to try for the bells too?"
I shrugged, "It's worth a shot. I doubt I'll be able to really get a hit in, but since Naruto tried, I can as well."
A small sigh come from him as he continued to read. He seemed as if he was disappointed in my resolve. "Well, whenever you're ready."
I narrowed my eyes, "My mother always told me to have my enemies make the first move, sensei."
At this I noticed a small smirk. "That's a smart lesson, however it seems Mai didn't exactly teach you the most important lesson of being a ninja. I guess it will have to be me to teach it to you then, huh?"
Taking not of how he easily knew my mother's name, and the way he spoke it made me wonder. How did he know her?
