Chapter 4- The Survival Test

I do not own Naruto

........................................................

"Mom, dad why do those people treat that boy so cruelly?" I asked pointing to the lonely, crying blonde boy.

Mom and dad looked to where I was pointing. They exchanged a glance at each other. My mothers face reflected sorrow, such a feeling that I had yet to understand. "For reasons we can't tell you, but he is probably very lonely, maybe someday you could try and be friends?" Dad suggested.

"Don't ever listen to what other people say about him, there is nothing wrong with him. People are just cruel." My mother paused, looking at the boy with a fondness. I didn't see the feeling under the fondness. "Even then you never see him give up, he just keeps getting back up and dusting himself off. Follow his example Yuki, don't ever give up."

I watched my mom go over to the blonde boy, despite the looks she was receiving from others and help him off the ground where he was just pushed. She offered a friendly smile, saying something to him that I failed to hear. He looked at her slightly shocked before he took off, tears flying as he run away from the crowd of people.

I looked from him to my mother, who's smile faded from her face. Once again, the look of sorrow crossed her face. I looked up at my dad, who was looking at my mother with sympathy and understanding. I tilted my head, but didn't say anything as I didn't want to upset them any further.

She returned to dad and I. She quickly covered up her upset and sorrow filled look as she smiled at me. She held her hand out to me, "Ne, Yuki, you ready to go home?" I smiled at her and nodded, letting her larger hand wrap around my smaller one. I looked up at my father, holding out my other hand. He smiled at me, ruffling my hair before taking my other hand.

Once we were home dad leaned down to me. " Yuki, do you remember that one promise we made the first time you saw that boy?" He asked.

" You told me you want me to try to be friends with him," I answered, but puffed out my cheeks. "But every time I try to talk to him he is either eating ramen, ignoring me, or he runs away from me."

He smiled at me, "That's okay, just keep trying. I also have another promise I want you to make. I just want you to try your best and always make me proud."

I smiled back at him and nodded," I will d-" I was cut off by my mother.

"Teno!" She shouted, pulling him from the door before it crashed down to the ground. I jumped at the loud crash, looking up at the two figures that stood there. My father's calm and loving look disappeared as he glared at the intruders. My mother held her arm out, seeming to form crystal from the air, without any handsigns. My parents stood in front of me, trying to block me from the view of the two intruders

"Mai Okami, a crystal user, very skillful ninja too. Teno Okami user of the Tensai, a rare kekkai genkai. Then their daughter Yuki Okami, unknown, so far shows no special ability." A gruff voice said chuckling, his voice sending chills down my spine.

"Why must you always say background information before we kill our prey?" Another voice said annoyed. I looked around my parents slightly to see two men one with a sword the other slouched looking bored.

My eyes widened as my mother's protective crystal formed aorund me, I knew this jutsu to be her crimson fruit. I pressed my hands on the crystal, my eyes wide from fear. "M-Mommy..." I whimered.

"Damn it." She cursed, "I let my guard down."

"I like to know my prey before I simply kill them off. These two are worthy opponents, yet so easy." The first man said pulling out his sword. Mom charged at the man with the sword. She ducked under his swipe and made a stab at his stomach. Her moves were graceful, and made with accuracy. The man cursed as she was able to draw blood.

I looked frantically over at my father, who was side stepping all slashes from his opponent. "It's rude to break into a person's home." My father narrowed his eyes.

Twisting his body around, my dad's eyes changed from their brilliant emerald green to a bloody red with three comma's. The man looked down, as to not allow any genjutsu to be casted on him. When my dad made another move to attack, he was surprised by the sword that went up.

However, he managed to jump back with only a small cut on his cheek. He narrowed his eyes when the man seemed to smile and looked up at my dad again. Then, as if realizing what happened his eyes widened, his eyes returning back to normal and his body quivering.

"Paralysis poison." The man muttered, not taking another thought to knock my father to the ground and stab him in the chest. However, that didn't seem to be enough as he pulled out and this time stuck his sword all the way though my father's heart.

"Daddy!" I shrieked, listening to the awful bubbling sound as blood filled his mouth. His eyes glazed over, and the blood that had filled his mouth ran over the side of his mouth. My body shook as my legs gave out from under me.

My outburst cause my mom to turn to see dad on the floor, dead. She completely froze, her own eyes wide as she looked at him. "T-Teno?" Her voice was raspy as she tried to swallow the lump in her throat.

Only mom got careless and forgot her one, most important rule, never set your eyes off your enemy. As soon as she turned her enemy knocked her to the ground and stabbed her in the stomach. She cried out, causing me to shriek again. Her eyes widened as she looked at me.

Tears collected at the corners of her eyes. Then, in a matter of seconds, she tried to smile at me. "Don't worry, Yuki..." She tried to reassure me, but I knew what was going to happen. "My special little girl..."

"M-Mommy?" I whimpered, not seeing the sword pull up from her. She closed her eyes, keeping a smile on her face, all to try to make me feel better. As soon as she closed her eyes, her tears had escaped, and the sword embedded itself into her heart.

The crystal that had been protecting me shattered into millions of pieces. I looked at the still body's of my parents. More tears swelled in my eyes as I stared at them, my body shaking more.

The two men chuckled at me. I suddenly felt the sharp pain kick in, realization had dawned on me, I had forgotten to take my medication like mom told me to. I put both my hands on the floor, ignoring my parents blood and I coughed up more blood to add to theirs.

Both men looked down at me. "Look at her, we didn't even land a single hit on her and she's already coughing up blood, she's weaker than we thought! No point in wasting our energy, if she dosen't die tonight she'll die another." One of the men looked at me as if disgusted. "To think two great ninja's gave birth to this weak excuse of a person. Lets go finish up the job." With that the two men left, but what followed was the screams of the rest of my clan

Tears fell down my face as blood ran down my mouth, I looked at my lifeless parents.

"Mommy? Daddy? H-hey g-guys get up, i-it's not f-funny." I cried shaking their shoulders in denial.

Soon the truth found its way into my head. I sobbed, ignoring the pain of my illness, as it had been replaced by the pain of losing my parents. My illness once again sent another shot of pain, I fell over in fits of coughing, landing in pools of blood. I continued to sob until ninja's found me, slowly dieing from my illness. They separated my from my dead parents to bring me to the hospital, where I had been cleaned from mine and my parents blood, alone with getting my medication.

........................................................................

I sprung up from my bed, in a cold sweat. Panting, and shivering I felt tears slip down my face. The same thought I had every time I had that dream came into my head. 'If I had been stronger, maybe they would have lived.' Once again I shook that thought out of my head. My parents had been the best ninja in our clan, if they could not defeat them there is no way I would be able to.

I wiped away the sweat and tears on my face before going to the bathroom. I brushed my hair and teeth, putting my hair up in the pigtails.

I put on my ninja outfit, a pink kimono, with a blue sash on my waist, the sleeves going down to my wrist. Under that I had my netting, and my ninja shoes. Since it was spring I left out my blue scarf. (look at title picture for outfit)

Lastly I added on my weapon pouch, and my headband. Once I was satisfied with myself I took one pill. I headed for the kitchen, simply taking a apple I headed out for the training grounds. Since our teacher was a jounin he would have put up a difficult survival test for us, hopefully Naruto will work with me.

Arriving there at the same time, I tiredly looked at my team mates as they seemed to arrive at the same time. Sasuke didn't seem to be even the slightest bit tired. Sakura, thankfully, was too tired to try to start up any kind of conversation or argue with me. Naruto seemed like he was still asleep. I stared at him for another moment, did he sleep walk here?

"Morning Naruto-kun." I greeted yawning. Glancing at my other two team mates I only nodded at them.  Naruto didn't reply.

.......................................................

Sakura ignored me, not that I mind. I ignored her as well, along with Sasuke. Turning my attention to my blonde friend I saw him on the ground sleeping. I knelt down to him and softly poked his face. He didn't seem fazed by me poking him, he only snored.

"Naruto-kun." I murmured, poking him in the cheek again. "Get up."

This time, he responded with a groan. Opening his eyes he glared at me, which I returned with a big smile. "Good morning Naruto-kun!"

He looked around, taking notice of Sakura and Sasuke before looking back at me. "Hey, where's Kakashi sensei dattebayo?"

I shrugged, "He told us to be here early, but he seems to be running a few hours late." I placed a finger to my chin in thought.

It didn't take long for us to grow impatient. At least, it didn't take Naruto, Sakura, and I to grow impatient. The three of us were sitting in a circle, all of us having a irritated expression on our faces. Sasuke, it seemed, had not grown as impatient as us and was still perfectly fine with standing and waiting.

His expression of calmness only seemed to irritate me more. Glaring at him I muttered, "How can you stand for that long?"

He didn't even look at me, much less respond to me. My eye twitched in annoyance as I clenched my fist. It felt like the Uchiha felt he was better than me.

Luckily for him, our sensei finally decided to make a appearance. With one hand in his pocket, Kakashi raised the free hand in a simple wave. "Hello," He muttered calmly.

Naruto and Sakura jumped up pointing their fingers at him. "You're late!" They shouted.

He didn't even pause to think of a reply, "Oh, well you see a black cat crossed paths with me. So I had to find a different rout here." He closed his eye, and it seemed to be that he was smiling at us.

"Yeah right!" Naruto and Sakura shouted together.

I nodded my head thoughtfully at Kakashi. "I believe you sensei," I answered, "You seem too lazy to go through the trouble of making up a story." It seemed as though Kakashi decided to disregard my comment completely.

"Now then, for our test." He pulled out three bells from his pocket and held it up for us to see. "It's simple really. All you have to do is take these bells from me." He paused to place a alarm on top of one of the three stumps. "Before this timer goes off at noon, of course."

I was going to ask the question all of us were thinking, but instead looked at Sakura. Who already had her mouth opened and was already asking the question. "But sensei, there are only three bells, and there is four of us."

Kakashi nodded, "Yes, that way one of you will be tied up to that stump and be sent back to the academy. Of course, if none of you are able to get the bells you all will be tied to the stump and watch as I eat my lunch in front of you."

He paused to hear the growls of hungry stomachs. It was clear as to why he told us not to eat breakfast now. Even with the mask, I could imagine him smirking. "Now then, you are allowed to use any weapon. Remember, you will not get the bells unless you are prepared to kill me."

"But sensei, that's dangerous! You could get hurt!" Sakura shouted in disagreement at our sensei's request. I couldn't help but stare at her in annoyance.

"Sakura, I doubt a jounin could get hurt from some little genin." I said, which caused her to glare at me. Apparently she didn't exactly agree with my reasoning, just as much as I didn't agree with hers. I glanced back at Kakashi, 'I know in fact I won't be able to get a hit on him. Which means it's probably the same as the others.' My thoughts paused, and my eyebrows pulled together. 'How exactly does he expect us to get the bells from him?'

Beside me Naruto laughed loudly, "How can you dodge a attack when you can't even dodge a eraser?!"

Kakashi wasn't amused. However, instead of ignoring his comment he placed his hand on his chin. "Class clowns aren't much of a threat."

That comment only angered Naruto, who suddenly pulled a kunai and charged at Kakashi. My eyes widened as Kakashi had already turned Naruto around, and positioned Naruto's hand that was holding the kunai at Naruto. Naruto's eyes widened as well as he started to comprehend what just happened. I tensed for a moment, but relaxed again as I reminded myself that Kakashi meant no ill will on Naruto. He was our teacher, so in a way he was teaching us something. Of course, at the moment, I have no idea what that is.

Beside me Sakura gasped in shock and I noticed Sasuke tense. Kakashi looked at Naruto, "Hold on, I haven't even said start yet." He chided. "However, since you came at me with the intention to kill, how do I say this." He paused to pretend to ponder his thoughts. "I'm starting to like you guys."

He released Naruto and took a step back. "Start." Kakashi simply said, which had everyone with the exception of Naruto, jumping off to a hiding spot. At the moment though, I had thought Naruto had followed me.

Settling in my spot on a tree branch I looked behind me to grin at Naruto, only to notice that the idiot Uzumaki wasn't there. Looking back at the clearing in front of me I noticed Naruto standing with one hand on his hip and the other hand pointing at Kakashi. Kakashi looked at the trees then at Naruto with a dull look.

"You and me right now! Fair and square!" Naruto shouted.

"You know, compared to the others you're a little.... weird." Kakashi muttered dully, not impressed with Naruto's straight approach.

"The only thing weird is your hair cut!" Naruto growled, charging at him. "I'm going to crush you, dattebayo!" I resisted to urge to run to Naruto's aid. Right now I needed to come up with a plan first.

"Lesson one, taijutsu." Kakashi reached into his pouch, which made Naruto stop in caution of what he was going to pull out. Seeing a book being pulled out only forced a sigh and sweatdrop out of me. He really wasn't taking Naruto seriously. Which only made me wonder more, how did he expect us to get the bells when he knows we weren't going to work together due to the number of us compared to the number of bells.

"W-What? Why are you reading that book?!" Naruto shouted angrily.

"Hmm, why?" Kakashi muttered dully. "Well to see what happens of course. Not that it will batter if I fight you." He was taunting Naruto on purpose, which was starting to annoy me as well.  I didn't exactly take Naruto being taunted or made fun of very well.

With a loud cry, Naruto ran at Kakashi with his hand balled up in a fist. Not taking Kakashi's speed into consideration, Naruto blinked as his enemy was no longer in front of him. Rather it seems that our sensei had easily managed to get behind Naruto, and was now forming a hand sign. If I was correct, it was the hand sign for a fire style jutsu. Sensing no chakra being concentrated, I sat confused as Kakashi sat behind Naruto.

"Don't let your enemies get behind you." Kakashi chided.

"Naruto get out of there! He's going to demolish you!" Sakura shouted, who happened to be under me. Giving away my location as well as her own, she wasn't exactly as bright as she appears.

"Too late! Leaf's secret finger jutsu: a thousand year's of death!" Kakashi shouted, bring his hand forward... and shoving it in Naruto's butt. My eye twitched as Naruto went flying into the river. Did we have a perverted teacher?

I sighed quietly, with my location no longer hidden I needed to move and get away. Perhaps I can figure out the hidden meaning behind this test. After all, it was obvious that one single genin wouldn't be able to land a hit on Kakashi.

.......................................

When I had just gotten settled in I saw Naruto upside down in a tree. It appears that their fight was over for the moment, which left me with a chance to help out Naruto. Looking around I made sure nobody was around before quickly approaching the tree with a kunai in my hand to cut the rope.

"Yuki-chan?" Naruto grinned when he saw me. "Help me down, dattebayo!"

I only nodded, an idea coming to me as I threw the kunai at the rope cutting it. Naruto landed on his head, which was followed by a complaint of pain. "Naruto-kun, I don't think we'll be able to get a hit on Kakashi sensei if we work alone. I know there is only three bells, but if we work together the two of us might be able to get a bell."

He rubbed his head, looking at me confused before shaking his head. "No thanks! I'll be just fine, I just need to eat something, I can't think when I'm so hungry dattebayo!"

I opened my mouth to respond to him, but he was up and already running away. "Thanks for helping me out, Yuki-chan!"

I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "Yeah, you're welcome." I muttered in annoyance.

"Hmm, so you decided to help Naruto." I jumped, twisting on my heel to look at Kakashi, who was still reading his book.

"He looked like he needed it." I responded.

"Sakura didn't try to help him, so why should you?" He asked.

"I'm not Sakura, she's obsessed with Sasuke. Also, he's my friend, I'm not going to leave him if he needs me." I responded, sliding my feet apart in a fighting stance.

He noticed my change in poster. "Oh, are you going to try for the bells too?"

I shrugged, "It's worth a shot. I doubt I'll be able to really get a hit in, but since Naruto tried, I can as well."

I noticed a small sigh come from him as he continued to read. "Well, whenever you're ready."

I narrowed my eyes, "My mother always told me to have my enemies make the first move, sensei."

At this I noticed a small smirk. "That's a smart lesson, however it seems Mai didn't exactly teach you the most important lesson of being a ninja. I guess it will have to be me to teach it to you then, huh?"

Taking not of how he easily knew my mother's name, and the way he spoke it made me wonder. How did he know her? From the way he said her name, there was more feeling to it than just another comrade.
