Tutorial (Stage 2)
"Hello internet, and welcome to-"
"One sec, the chat can only see blue." Chris interrupted him.
"Seriously?!" Matt shouted, laughing a bit.
"I'm working on it!" Jason shouted back.
"Hashtag Blame Jason!" Matt shouted again. Jason quickly fixed the blue screen so that the chat could see Matt's face.
"There we go! Hello internet, and welcome to GTlive! Sorry Stephanie isn't here today, she's at the dentist. Here's hoping that she doesn't have any cavities. Anyway, today we're finally getting around to Kingdom Of Hate. This game has been highly requested by all of you, but the real reason why we're playing it is to satisfy our own curiosity. As pretty much everyone knows at this rate, people who play this game have been reported to go missing in the blink of an eye. There's also the fact that no one actually knows what happens when you die in this game, or even if you can. So we're just going to jump right into it."
Jason pulled up the game on screen while Chris monitored the chat, now talking about Steph's cavities, (or lack thereof,) and Matt started the game up. It immediately started a cutscene, showing the backstory of the game. An evil Kingdom, ruled by a tyranical, unseen king, where everyone except the rich lived in poverty, and it was always night. It then showed a small girl, only about 9 or 10, waking up in bed.
"Aw, she's so cute. Am I playing as her?" Matt asked the rest of the room.
"Yeah, she's the player character in all the speed runs on YouTube." Chris said. "I don't think it's ever said in-game, but her name is supposed to be Melody."
Melody was a very cute player character. She was very small and sweet looking, with one long brown braid down her back and large, innocent brown eyes. She was very young as well, apparently 10 years old according to the developers. Her idle animations consisted of her looking around with a timid look and biting her nails. You just wanted to pick her up and hug her.
"Oh, I'm playing." Matt finally noticed that he was controlling her now. "Controls are a little weird. She's a bit out of sync."
"I think it'll snap into place once the intro is done." Chris explained.
"Daddy?" Meldoy called out. "Daddy!"
"This is that Jason meme all over again." Matt said. As a joke, Chris, Matt, and Jason all started shouting "Jason!" In the same way the the character did in Heavy Rain. The chat followed their example.
Matt guided Melody down the stairs into what he presumed to be the kitchen. He shouted in shock. On the floor was a disturbing amount of blood, as well as a severed finger. "Whoa, whoa!" Matt cringed as Melody screamed and fell to the floor.
"Daddy!" She shouted. Melody looked out the window to see a large brown sack being flung onto a trolley. The game zoomed in on a finger-less hand sticking out of it.
"So the game starts off by killing my father. Uplifting." Matt said, still backing away from the screen.
Melody burst out the front door and started screaming at the two palace guards by the trolley. "You let my daddy out! Let him go!"
The guards ignored her and rode away. Clearly, Melody didn't understand what dead meant, because the control switched back to Matt. "Oh! I'm back. I have to chase after the trolley, right?" As Matt propelled his character to run forward, he talked to the others in the room, as well as the chat. "I mean, it's a good setup for getting this girl into an adventure, but it's going to be really sad when she figures out that her dad is dead."
Suddenly, one of the guards turned around. A quick time prompt appeared on screen, which Matt pressed. He paused the game. "Wait, this will let us see what happens when you die."
"Yeah, alright, so fail one of these quick time prompts and then we can see." Jason said.
"I feel really bad for killing Melody on the tutorial... but she'll come right back. Plus we're not even that far into the game." Matt pressed play, and another quick-time prompt lit up, this time Matt deliberately ignoring it.
The guard raised his sword above his head, sending Melody into a panic. "No! No!" She was sobbing. Matt cringed at his own guilt. He felt so bad. "I don't want to die! I want to live! STOP!" The game froze.
"Wait, what?" Matt moved his controller. "No wonder no one knows what happens when you die. The game's broken." He set it down.
"Um, Matt? The wifi's out." Chris said. As soon as he said that, the power went out. They were in a blackout. Everything was off. Except the T.V. The T.V was still frozen. The light of the screen started to glow brighter.
Curious, Chris and Jason abandoned their stations to get a closer look. As the light shone brighter, it engulfed them until they were gone. Seeing the light get further towards himself, Matt jumped back and ran into the kitchen. He grabbed a ripped open envelope and a pen and quickly started writing as the light came closer to him. He quickly wrote something down before the light got into the kitchen. He crawled backwards until his back hit the fridge. With nowhere to go, he raised his arms to shield his face. The light engulfed him, until he was gone.
The lights turned back on. The stream was back up. And no one had any idea where they went.
