First Meetings
Kim Hongjoong held Youngseok snug against his hip, ensuring he was supported accurately as he pushed open the glass door of the apartment building with his forearm – checking that Junyoung was following close behind. Clenched in his other fist was a large, brown paper bag with McDonald's takeout, intending to be tonight's dinner. After the shit week the alpha had had, he felt the desperate need to relax on his Saturday night, which meant no cooking. It had been his first week in the big city of Seoul, having just moved there from Anyang with his two young sons. There had been adjusting to the new apartment, signing Junyoung up for school and dealing with the pup's emotional distress.
Add in the fact that he moved in next to an obnoxious neighbour – it was far from a good week.
The neighbour had been the icing on the cake for Hongjoong that morning. Hongjoong had unfortunately been unable to introduce himself to the other man until recently. He had caught a glimpse of the male through the balcony door on occasion, in the mornings. Also Hongjoong could easily smell the omega pheromones that wafted through the walls. However, when he stepped out onto his balcony that morning with the intent of introducing himself, the omega seemed far from impressed. Nor was he welcoming.
Some might even consider the other wolf to be downright rude. The blonde haired omega with a slender waist and thick thighs absolutely refused to participate in Hongjoong's flirting. He had tried his very best to compliment the omega on both appearance and his scent. But neither seemed to impress him much. Rather, he fought back with a spice of rebellion.
But perhaps that was exactly how Hongjoong liked it, especially considering he couldn't get the omega off his mind all day.
"Ah, speak of the devil," Hongjoong mumbled under his breath. Pausing slightly on the filthy staircase, Hongjoong glanced ahead of him to the next landing. Standing there in the darkened shadows was his creamsicle omega. Watching for a moment, he noted the omega struggling with what appeared to be a gym bag slung over his shoulder and several grocery bags in his hands. Licking his lips slightly, Hongjoong took the remaining steps up to the landing.
"Appa" Junyoung mumbled, reaching forward to grab at his appa's pant leg. His little fist held the fabric, a pout coming across his lips. The little boy, at the age of five, was extremely shy. He didn't like interacting with strangers – which had made starting school rather difficult.
"It's okay puppies" Hongjoong encouraged when he felt Youngseok nuzzle against his neck. Junyoung's shyness was nothing compared to three-year-old Youngseok. His youngest son barely spoke – and it had nothing to do with inability. Hongjoong had tried everything for the little one, gone to every specialist. Youngseok could talk, he simply didn't want too.
Hongjoong blamed it on their past abandonment. Try as he might to ease the pain from their early childhood, the triggers remained. He knew that once things settled down for him he'd have to locate a counsellor. Mental health was important, he knew that, and it always came first. "We are just going to offer help," he explained, setting Youngseok down on his feet and signalling for Junyoung to take his head, before stepping towards the omega.
"Need some help?" Hongjoong offered in his kindest voice. He flipped his shaggy electric blue hair that was well overdue for a haircut, out of his face. Flashing a warm smile, he hoped the omega would be welcoming.
The unnamed omega glanced upwards at Hongjoong. At first glance the omega appeared to be grateful for the offer. His expression was soft and he had released a sigh of relief. However, the moment he locked eyes with the alpha, the blonde man frowned. Letting out a deep groan, the omega straightened his back to stand proud. "No, thank you." he answered firmly. But the man was clearly struggling, stumbling with the bags.
Hongjoong raised a questioning eyebrow. "Are you certain of that?" Hongjoong pressed on. He held out a hand for a set of bags.
"What, you think I can't handle it?" Blondie argued with a frown. "The bags look too heavy for the precious little omega. I need a big strong alpha to carry the bags for me? Can't handle it myself, eh?" The omega struggled under the weight of the bags, one of the handles beginning to slip from his grip.
"Come on, darling, let me help." Hongjoong insisted.
"Excuse you?" the man hissed out. And Hong Jung released at that moment he had clearly made a mistake. The omega took a step away from the alpha. "I am not your darling. Don't call me that." Blondie made a face, scrunching his nose slightly, in distaste.
"In my defence, you never properly introduce yourself." Hongjoong argued. "So I don't exactly know your name now, do I, darling?" The urge to fight against the omega pushed against Hongjoong's mind. It was within his natural alpha instincts – as well as childhood upbringing – to compel the omega to submit. Plus, Hongjoong just wanted to push this omega's buttons – it seemed like an amusing way to pass his time.
"There was nothing proper regarding your introduction, either." Blondie shot back as a fierce reply. He shifted some of the bags to the floor, to take a break; another huff of air escaped his lips. "You checked out my ass and drank my coffee. I wouldn't necessarily call that ideal."
"Isn't it every omega's wish to be physically appealing and appease an alpha through things like making them coffee?" Hongjoong frowned slightly. Isn't that mentality part of the omega's natural personality? Are they not raised to bend to an alpha's will?
"You didn't even like the coffee!" Blondie snapped.
"Well you should have added cream and sugar!" Hongjoong fired back.
Junyoung had stood off to the side, holding tightly to Youngseok's little hand as they watched the exchange between the two adults. Their little heads going side to side as though watching a ping pong game. Based on the way the two adults talked with each other it would appear that they had completely forgotten about the pup's existence.
"How the hell was I supposed to know that's how you took your coffee?" Blondie questioned, appearing extremely unimpressed.
"Don't swear in front of children" Hongjoong criticized, feeling a confident smirk tug at his lips. This omega had been so high on his parental horse this morning, acting as though he was better than Hongjoong. Yet he hadn't even noticed the two pups standing nearby – some parent he was right?
"What?" the omega glanced around, his eyes widening when he noticed the two pups huddled together. He struggled with evening out his scent, likely ensuring he didn't stress the puppies out with an unknown scent. "I... you have two...?"
Hongjoong scoffed a little, noticing the change in the omega's behaviour. "Junyoung and Youngseok '' he nodded towards the two pups.
"Oh" the neighbour waved at the little pups. "Hello there puppies" he offered up a bright smile. "I have two pups of my own around your age."
Normally when Hongjoong heard such a comment he'd plan a playdate, arrange a meeting at the park or something. He knew his boys struggled with making friends and he often took any chance he could to encourage engagement. But not this time. Under no circumstances would Hongjoong allow his pups to get close with the ones from this omega.
"You could've asked." Hongjoong was quick to refocus the topic and get the omega to stop speaking with his children.
"What?" the other male asked, confusion laced on his face.
"You could've asked how I took my coffee" Hongjoong explained.
"And do what? Go inside and make you a custom coffee, to your taste?" Blondie asked.
"Well... yeah?" Hongjoong asked confused at the omegas reaction.
The omega rolled his eyes but he didn't appear very surprised. "What the hell kind of backwards thinking was you raised with? I am not a cute little house omega that comes when an alpha calls. You think I'm going to run off to make you coffee." His scent was spiking more, anger coming back in.
"I never said you were." Hongjoong argued in return. This omega was impossible. Hongjoong had been trying to do a nice act, offering to carry the heavy bags. And it only turned around to become an argument.
"Yeah, but you certainly implied It." Omega hissed in response.
"Look, darling," Hongjoong stated firmly, wanting more than anything to bring this conversation to a close. "First of all, I said nothing about you being an omega in terms of making me coffee. I had meant that it would've been the polite thing to do as my new neighbour. Secondly, all I did was offer to help carry your bags. I never meant to imply you were incapable because of your sub gender, or that omegas are only competent as housekeepers."
"You certainly have a poor way with your words..." the omega mumbled.
"So that's a no to the help then?" Hongjoong asked the obvious.
"It's a no.," the omega agreed. The slender man reached down to retrieve his bags from the floor. Clasping the plastic handles, he lifted.
"Alright puppies" Hongjoong directed to the two boys. "Say goodbye to the omega. We need to go have our dinner." He waved the brown bag of McDonalds to signal that their meal was ready and waiting – although he was likely going to need to heat it up cause nobody likes cold fast food.
"Bye" Junyoung said, his voice small. His gaze was locked with the omega. His scent had taken on a warmer tone, something Hongjoong hadn't smelt since they arrived in Seoul.
"Bye Junyoung '' the other male cooed at the pup, wiggling his fingers. A bright smile was plastered on his face – the first genuine one Hongjoong had noticed. And for a split second Hongjoong noticed how attractive the omega was. Yes, he was sexy, Hongjoong realized that instantly. But there was more to the male. He had softness to eyes, obviously filled with affection; his jaw was sharp but with soft round cheeks. His height would've made him appear more like an alpha or beta, but Hongjoong figured it suited the omega.
Hongjoong shrugged the thoughts away and grabbed for Junyoung's free hand "let's go puppies." and with that he started up the stairs. He hadn't intended to look back; he didn't want to give the omega the satisfaction. But when the omega released a shocking gasp, shortly followed by a tumbling sound Hongjoong couldn't resist glancing over his shoulder. Releasing a light snicker, Hongjoong looked over the omega with torn bags in his hands and discarded groceries on the floor around his feet. The carton of eggs had opened and cracked. The orange juice was pooling in a puddle, soaking the remaining groceries that had been left intact.
The omega sighed in defeat and kneeled to the ground. Carefully, he began to repack the fallen groceries into the few bags that hadn't ripped. The knees of his jeans were getting soaked from the orange juice. Slowly the omega glanced upwards to the alpha standing in the stairway. "Aren't you going to help?" he asked in a small voice.
For a moment, Hongjoong's alpha pulled at the want to assist. "Help, help the omega. Omega needs you." But Hongjoong fought hard against the words. Instead he replied with "I thought you said you didn't need my help." It was childish and Hongjoong knew it.
Blondie's gaze snapped into an intense glare, shot directly at Hongjoong. The decline for assistance seemed to piss the omega off. The tips of his ears began to glow red with anger. The omega mumbled a few words of disbelief, and possibly some swear words. "That's not a good impression to make with your pups watching," he said, shooting a glance at the two little ones watching, Junyoung with wide eyes.
Hongjoong held back a low sneaker. Maybe that'll teach the omega to be so rude to him. These things had a way of coming back to bite you in the ass. Are you rude when offered help? Well, next time you need it the help might not be available. And he had no right to bring Junyoung and Youngseok into this. It was a low blow and the omega knew it.
"My pups are doing just fine with the impressions I give" Hongjoong shot back.
Fumbling around the floor, the omega reached for something. Clasping the small product in his palm he threw with all his might tossing the item angrily in Hongjoong's direction. "Stupid jerk!" he hissed letting his hand fall in defeat.
Hongjoong quickly raised his fist and grabbed the grocery item just before it hit him square in the face. The omega had a fairly good aim. If Hongjoong hadn't had such quick reflexes it would've likely hit him with good force. Hongjoong, still standing on the step, twisted the item in his hand. "Throwing food? That's not a very good impression to make with pups watching." He let out a low chuckle as he held up the mini bottle for the omega to view. "Banana milk. My favourite." Turning back towards the stairs he began his climb, leaving the omega to collect the grocery items on his own. "Thanks for the milk!" he called over his shoulder.
The alpha was still laughing as he reached the eighth floor where his apartment was located. Distracted by guiding his two pups, "be careful where you step Junyoung," the alpha nearly walked straight into another man as he rounded the corner. Once again, Hongjoong was putting his quick reflexes to the test. He stepped aside quickly, dodging the male just in time.
"I'm sorry" Hongjoong apologized quickly. He glanced up at the slender adult with deep-set dimples and plum hair. The alpha got a slight sniff of the pine trees, like a forest. Another alpha. "I wasn't paying attention."
"It's alright," the alpha answered with a light voice. He shifted his weight slightly, lifting his arms into a better position. It was then that Hongjoong noticed the bundle of a small pup balanced on the other's hip. "You must be the new neighbour."
"Kim Hongjoong" the alpha smiled warmly and gave a small bow. "I am. I live right there" he stated, pointing over the alpha's shoulder to his door near the end of the hall. "You live on this floor too?" Hongjoong could be polite, especially towards another alpha.
"Nah" the alpha flashed a bright smile, "but I do live on the floor above here" he explained. "I'm Choi San." He gave a bow to his head, unable to offer up much more in the form of a greeting.
"Pleasure to meet you, San" Hongjoong offered another warm smile. He glanced at the sleeping little pup in his arms. "Babysitting?" he asked curiously.
"Ah," San glanced at the pup in his arms and bounced him slightly. A fond look on his face and his scent. The alpha clearly had a strong connection with the pup. Likely knew him for many years. "Yeah, for a friend. This is Sumin."
"He's my brother," a little voice sounded from behind San's legs. An equally small boy peeked his head around the alpha. He had shaggy brown hair that was tousled from a busy day of playing outside.
Getting a good look at the two boys, Hongjoong was quick to notice the pups were likely close in age with Youngseok. "Oh? Sumin is your brother?" Hongjoong asked bending at the knee to kneel by the boy. When the boy gave a firm nod, Hongjoong asked warmly "And what's your name?" He extended his arm towards Junyoung and Youngseok, encouraging the two boys to step forward as well.
The pup glanced up nervously at San. His deep eyes were wide with concern and a lack of trust. San offered an encouraging nod and smile. "It's alright" San spoke gently. "You can answer him." The alpha couldn't be any older than Hongjoong. Perhaps it would be worth making a play date with these two pups.
"Minjae'' the pup answered in a small voice. He raised his little hand and gently stuck his thumb in his mouth. A nervous habit the pup had developed recently. San had been quick to notice the action and gently patted Minjae's hand as a reminder to stop. The pup quickly removed his thumb and forced himself to stand taller – like the big boy he longed to be. Hongjoong found it interesting. Youngseok still sucked his thumb and Hongjoong found nothing wrong with the habit, so he wasn't quick to make him stop.
"Can you introduce yourselves to Minjae and Sumin?" Hongjoong asked looking at his own sweet pups.
Youngseok stepped forward, eyes sharp and head held high. He grabbed protectively onto Hongjoong. This made both adults chuckle lightly. Was Hongjoong standing too close to Minjae and his youngest was territorial?
"What's your name sweetheart?" San asked, bending down lightly, setting Sumin onto his knee for balance. He flashed a warm smile to Youngseok. But the pup only stepped further away, hiding slightly behind Hongjoong.
"Sorry about that," Hongjoong mumbled. "This is Youngseok" he introduced his youngest, smiling softly. "He's three."
"Oh" San beamed, he looked down at Minjae. "Minnie, how old are you?"
"Three" the pup answered happily, holding up four fingers.
Hongjoong chuckled lightly and reached forward to coach the pup in lowering one of his fingers gently. "There we go," he said softly. "And how old is your brother Sumin?"
Minjae lowered one of his fingers, "he's two."
"So you're his hyung" Hongjoong cooed. "How sweet. You better take good care of him right?"
"I do," Minjae nodded firmly.
"Good" Hongjoong answered amused. He flashed a smile at Junyoung. "And what about you pup? Can you tell Minjae, San and Sumin your name?"
Junyoung glanced at his appa, seeming to contemplate if he actually wanted to listen to the request or not. Softly he sighed. "I'm Junyoung'' he answered, "and I'm five years old." It felt rehearsed... because it was. Hongjoong had spent the past week coaching Junyoung on how to make friends in class. At least their lessons had paid off slightly.
"You're the oldest," Minjae beamed.
"Good job" San coached. "You know your numbers. Yes, Junyoung would be your hyung."
"Can I call you hyung?" Minjae asked Junyoung.
Hongjoong's eldest glanced towards him, asking for permission. "If you want" Hongjoong said. "Only if you're comfortable with it."
"Okay" Junyoung said, turning back to Minjae. "I'll be your hyung."
The alpha felt like his heart could burst with pride. Was this Junyoung's first friend? Of course Minjae might be a couple years younger than him, so it wasn't very helpful in terms of going to school but at least on weekends it would be nice. And maybe Minjae's bright attitude can rub off on Young Seok.
"Yay!" Minjae cheered. But something caught the pup's attention. "Banana milk?" the boy asked with wide eyes.
Hongjoong glanced down at the drink still pressed firmly in his hand. "Ah, yeah" he answered. What he said to the omega earlier wasn't actually true. It was far from being his favourite drink. Even if pups weren't a big fan – they preferred chocolate milk. But of course he wasn't going to tell the omega that. "You like banana milk?" he asked.
"Love it" Minjae answered with a soft tone. His eyes locked with the drink and watched it longingly.
The alpha held back a sigh as his heart tugged at the sight. His internal alpha started to coo at the sight "he a pup. Give him milk. Pups need milk." The paternal instincts in the alpha temporarily pulled through for a pup that wasn't his own. This was uncommon for Hongjoong. He loved Junyoung and Youngseok; he always felt a connection with them. But it was rare for him to feel something for a pup that wasn't his. "Do you want it?" Hongjoong found himself asking as he held the little bottle out to the boy.
Junyoung glanced at his appa with wide eyes.
"Unless you want it" Hongjoong hesitated, looking at his eldest.
"No appa" Junyoung shook his head. "I like chocolate milk."
"I know you do puppy" Hongjoong leaned over to press his head affectionately against Junyoung's. "So do you want it?" he asked Minjae again.
Minjae glanced happily up at the babysitter, searching for permission. San looked like he was going to deny the offer, not wanting to bother the alpha more than they already had. However when he caught sight of the little boy's eager eyes he nodded in agreement. Minjae cheered lightly and gave a small clap. "Yes, please" he answered the alpha. The pup had now stepped forward, coming out from behind San's legs.
"So polite" the alpha noted. Hongjoong was impressed with the pup's manners. His eomma had clearly been raising him well. The alpha held out the bottle for the little boy to take. The pup happily accepted it, spinning in a cute little circle of joy.
Hongjoong withheld a small chuckle from the cuteness.
"What's that?" Junyoung questioned. His small finger pointed to the children's bouncy ball on the floor by Minjae's feet.
"Soccer ball." Minjae answered, puffing his chest out proudly.
The alpha held back a little coo, feeling his heart melt at the adorableness. It was far from being a standard soccer ball. But certainly to the pup it was the ball he was bound to kick around in the park. "A soccer ball?" Hongjoong stated in excitement. He pushed himself off the floor and took a step down the hallway. "Show me what you've got!" When the pup looked at him confused Hongjoong added, "pass me the ball."
Minjae smiled and stepped forward, eager to kick the little ball. San mumbled a little nervously, glancing between Hongjoong and Minjae. "I don't know if that's a good idea..." but San didn't have much force behind his words. He wasn't the pup's parent. He didn't care as much as their appa or eomma probably would.
Hongjoong carelessly waved the concern away with a smile. "Don't worry about it. There's nothing here to break." With a quick wink the alpha added, "and if anything happens I'll take the blame for it."
The alpha appeared to be apprehensive of the entire thing, hesitating to agree. But with a deep sigh he caved and stepped back. Moving closer to the wall, he held onto the second pup. "Keep it down" San ordered, glancing down at the boy in his arms as a nonverbal cue.
"Of course" Hongjoong nodded in agreement. "Junyoung, Youngseok, do you want to play?" he asked.
"No appa" Junyoung shook his head. "I'm hungry."
Hongjoong frowned slightly, patting himself down. "Ah here we go '' he smiled, tugging a pack of chocolate pokey from his pocket. He opened it and handed it over to Junyoung. "But only a little okay? We will have dinner soon. And share with your brother if he wants It.'' The alpha straightened and stepped away from the boys.
"Appa" Youngseok's small voice made the alpha freeze mid step. Hongjoong couldn't remember the last time Youngseok spoke around strangers. With a quick sniff to the air he checked to see if the younger was in distress. Was he calling out for him because something was wrong? But much to his surprise Youngseok's milky, cream aroma was sweet, signalling his calm behaviour.
"Yes Youngie?" Hongjoong asked with a smile, wanting to appear welcoming to whatever his son was going to ask for.
"Can I play too?" Youngseok questioned.
The alpha couldn't keep his jaw shut this time. His mouth fell opened slightly as his eyes widened. Youngseok wanted to play soccer with him and another kid? Never had Youngseok showed interest in anyone that wasn't his direct family. "Yeah, yeah of course" Hongjoong answered eagerly. "Come on, lets go stand on the other side of the hallway," he instructed. Placing a hand on Youngseok's shoulder, he moved down the hallway. "Okay. Give us your best kick" he directed to Minjae.
Minjae pulled back his small leg and released it with force. Sending the ball coming towards Hongjoong, it veered to the left. It would've missed the alpha completely but he just barely stopped it in time. The pup certainly had power behind his kick. Minjae looked down to the floor with shame.
"Try again." Hongjoong encouraged. He lightly moved the ball between Youngseok's feet. "Youngie will pass it back to you." He watched as San moved to stand behind Minjae, ready to stop the ball should it go pass the boy. Junyoung followed the alpha, sticking close to his side.
"Okay kick it nice and soft Youngseok" Hongjoong instructed. Lightly, Youngseok passed the ball back towards the other. Ultimately Minjae fumbled with accepting the pass and knocked it towards the side. "That was a good pass Youngie," he praised.
With a gasp, the pup chased after the ball to retrieve it. Hongjoong watched in awe. Hongjoong watched Minjae realizing he had a determined set to his round eyes and puffy cheeks was Hongjoong's definition of cute.
However, the alpha also caught something going on in the background. Sumin appeared to have awoken and was alert in San's arms. Junyoung was glancing up at the little boy with a smile, his mouth moving as he spoke gently. Soon he held up one of the pokey chocolates for the younger. Hongjoong beamed. His little boy was sharing with Sumin, talking with the other.
Minjae came back holding the ball in his little hands. He glanced in Hongjoong's direction. There was a hint of shame and sadness on his face from missing the pass. But Hongjoong smiled comfortingly and lightly offered, "Go ahead. Try again." With a nod, Minjae set the ball on the floor. Nibbling on his bottom lip he went to give it a strong kick, but missed it completely. His leg swung and hit the empty air. The pup sighed in defeat.
"You got it," Hongjoong stated. His alpha was pulling from the inside. The vanilla and milk scent had turned sad, a clear sign of the pup's emotions. The alpha wanted to reach out and comfort him. "Pup. Pup is sad. Go help pup. Pup needs comfort. Pup needs alpha." but a hug wasn't going to fix it. Maybe it'll please the pup in the moment, but the problem would still be present next time he decided to play. It was better to teach the pup how to properly pass and kick. Hongjoong offered a warm smile. "Eye on the ball. Watch it. Kick it."
The pup sighed softly but nonetheless he followed the alpha's orders. Tilting his little head downwards he kept his gaze on the ball. Pulling his leg back, he gave another firm kick – flinching slightly in pain from the force. This time he hit the ball – sending it towards Youngseok. However the ball went towards the side again. Minjae let out a defeated whimper. Stomping his foot angrily he crossed his arms over his small chest and pouted. His large eyes grew wider as they filled with a mix of sad and angry tears.
San stepped forward, his own scent souring at seeing the pup in distress. He had been intent on comforting the child. But much to his surprise, Hongjoong had beaten him to it.
Hongjoong stepped forward quickly. He approached the pup and knelt down before him. "I bet your little toes hurt." Hongjoong spoke gently. Reaching forward, he teasingly tapped the tip of the pup's foot. The boy gave a light sniffle and a small nod of his head. "You are so strong!" Hongjoong started with excitement and pride – hoping it might cheer up the little pup. "But you don't kick a ball with your toes. That's why it hurt," Hongjoong explained. Reaching forward, the alpha ran his hand along the inside of Minjae's right foot. "Right here is where you kick the ball," he explained gently. "It'll go straight and it won't hurt."
Minjae gave a small nod of understanding. But his pout remained on his face. The tears that gathered in his eyes had begun to fall silently. "I can't do it," he said weakly. "Me no good." He let out another whimper of sadness.
Hongjoong's heart felt a small pang. This little guy was just too sweet for his own good. Gently using his thumb Hongjoong wiped away the stray tears that rolled down his cheek. "You can't do it now " Hongjoong stated softly. "But you can do it soon."
The pup looked down at his feet and shuffled lightly. "I only fail," he said in a broken voice.
"You only fail when you stop trying" Hongjoong replied to the boy carefully. Wiping away another row of tears he then moved his hands up to push back the pup's dark locks – ruffling them affectionately. "Keep trying. You'll get better" he tried to encourage again. But the pup just didn't seem to feel better. Minjae's scent was still filled with sadness. "Hey. I couldn't kick a ball either at your age" Hongjoong tried to go another route.
"But you're alpha," Minjae whispered. Finally pulling his eyes away from the floor, he locked gazes with the man. His little eyes shone with wonder and fear.
"Alpha, beta, omega, it doesn't matter," Hongjoong explained. "We all need to practice, we all need to learn and be taught." Lightly he patted Minjae on the shoulder and beamed a smile.
Youngseok approached the two, the ball clutched tightly to his chest. His little tongue poked between his lips in contemplation. He hesitated, his scent showcased his nerves. But eventually he said in a small voice, "you play good." The younger one held the ball out for Minjae.
"Give it another try. Kick right here" Hongjoong patted the inside of Minjae's foot. Standing up, Hongjoong backed away from the child. "Come on. Youngie thinks you can do it. I do too. Try. Give it a try" Hongjoong beamed brightly.
Minjae glanced between Hongjoong and the ball placed before him. The pup appeared to be deciding if it was worth it or not. Finally he gave into the temptation and lightly kicked the ball with the inside of his foot. The force wasn't there as it was before – clearly being a half-hearted kick. But it went straight. The ball came directly towards Youngseok, rolling to a stop in front of his feet. Minjae's eyes widened with surprise. He looked down at the ball before turning his face up towards the alpha.
"You did it!" Hongjoong cheered a little too loudly. Then, with excitement, he stretched out his arms. This was meant to be a sign of joy or celebration. But Minjae appeared to take it otherwise. The pup came running forward, laughing brightly. All tears had long been forgotten. Stretching out his own arms the pup jumped into Hongjoong's embrace.
The alpha barely had enough time to register the pup's want for a hug. With a deep gasp, the alpha accepted the force of the small child. Without much hesitation, Hongjoong lifted the boy into his arms and balanced him on his hip. He chuckled lightly at the sight of the boy's puffy smiling cheeks. "I did it!" the boy announced.
"Yes you did" Hongjoong answered, his hand slowly gliding up and down the child's back. He couldn't remember the last time a pup ever came running at him for a hug – in fact he wasn't certain it had ever happened before. He bounced the boy softly. Adding a gentle "and I am so proud of you."
His internalized alpha was howling with joy. The wolf was practically wagging his tag with emotions. "Happy pup. Pup is happy. We get hugs. Pup hugs the best" the wolf was bouncing around. "Vanilla and milk. So sweet. Nice scent. I like it."
Hongjoong hadn't registered the pup's actions until the wolf had made the scent comment. Hongjoong was quickly engulfed in the aroma of sweet vanilla and calming milk. It was the scent of a pup. Minjae was nuzzling his little nose against the alpha's scent glands along his neck. Unintentionally Hongjoong had responded to the action by releasing his own eucalyptus pheromones.
Youngseok discarded the ball to the side and came running towards the appa. Hongjoong was expecting a hiss or a growl. His boys didn't have much exposure to other pups around Hongjoong, and if the previous reaction was any indication, they were protective over him. But much to his surprise Youngseok came forward with his own arms out, looking to be picked up.
Bending slightly Hongjoong accepted his son into his arms, lifting him up onto his opposite hip. Balancing the two pups he could feel them both cuddle against him, breathing in his scent.
"Beach" Minjae mumbled, pulling back slightly so that he could speak. However, the pup ensured he left his head resting on the alpha's shoulder, melting into the warm embrace.
Hongjoong nuzzled his nose on the pup's head. "Hmm?" he questioned curiously. He was confused as to what the pup had meant by that.
"You the beach," the pup explained with a little giggle. "I like the beach."
Hongjoong's heart wanted to break at that moment. He couldn't remember the last time anyone other than his family had said they liked his scent. Sure, he heard the occasional comment from an omega that the scent was nice or calming – or even the odd time someone said they didn't mind it. But for someone to confidently say they liked it, he had never experienced that. Not when they recognized him as an alpha. His scent was nice, but it was nice for a beta.
"Our scent. He likes our scent. Pup likes our scent. Pup!" the alpha was jumping around again with an overwhelming amount of happiness.
"And I like vanilla" Hongjoong offered softly as a reply. Hongjoong would likely have said more. But it was in that moment that his omega neighbour had finally come out through the stairway door. With a sigh Hongjoong set Minjae down, leaving him with just Youngseok. He would rather not have another run in with the angry omega. Two arguments a day was Hongjoong's limit. "I need to go," he told the pup. When the child pouted, Hongjoong chuckled lightly. Reaching down he ruffled the boy's hair lightly. "I'll see you around," he promised. Stepping back, he went to receive his bag. "Bye Min-Min" Hongjoong gave a small wave.
"Bye Joongie" Minjae answered with a tiny wave of his own.
"Come on Junyoung" Hongjoong called to his eldest. Junyoung had since sat on the ground with Sumin, the two leaning against the wall talking lightly. Hongjoong smiled softly. If only his stupid neighbour wasn't coming. The pups could've played longer.
Hongjoong had fumbled with his keys before stepping inside his cold apartment, ushering the pups in behind him. Just as he was closing the door he heard a soft voice mumble "sorry I took so long..." the rest faded away as the alpha shut the door.
"Dinner?" Junyoung asked, glancing up at his appa.
"Yup" Hongjoong chuckled lightly. "You two go wash up in the bathroom and I'll get everything set out." Despite having raised these two pups for several years now, Hongjoong still hadn't gotten the hang of cooking. It wasn't that he was a bad cook – he just wasn't exactly good. But he could handle grabbing a cooking tray, laying out the nuggets and fries then stick it in the oven to heat up.
Leaning against the counter, waiting for his pups to return, he thought about his interactions with Minjae and Sumin. Pups had never been on his to-do list, especially not at the age of seventeen. That's how old he was when Junyoung was born. He was seventeen. And although Junyoung will always be viewed as one of his greatest blessings, he couldn't help but wonder what his life at twenty-two would be like. As a result he never considers himself to be that naturally soothing alpha, the one with domestic instincts. He was intoned with his own pups, but certainly not anyone else.
Minjae however appeared drawn to him. Hongjoong could tell the pup was paying attention to him; he was actually focused on the alpha. And Minjae made the first step forward for the hug. He could never imagine his own pups warming up to a stranger so quickly. And that was the other thing he noticed, the way his pups reacted. Youngseok spoke to Minjae, directly said a sentence to him. Junyoung seemed more relaxed too. Both welcomed the time spent with the other pups rather than begging Hongjoong to take them away.
"Done appa," Junyoung announced, coming back in with a smile on his face. His scent seemed brighter since their interaction with the two in the hallway. Almost as though it was back to normal, how it was before they moved to Seoul.
"Done too!" Youngseok called, rushing up behind his brother.
Hongjoong practically wanted to let out a cry. Both pups were smiles, seemingly content with their surroundings. Youngseok hadn't smiled in what felt like forever. Sometimes it felt like Hongjoong that Youngseok hadn't smiled in years. Their lives had been so filled with Youngseok's tears that sadness was all Hongjoong knew.
They had spent many sleepless nights, especially since arriving in Seoul, with Youngseok crying out. Sometimes it took its toll on Hongjoong. But that's what made these moments all that much more special.
"Great" Hongjoong smiled. "Dinner is just heating up. You boys can help set the table." He moved through the kitchen to grab the kid friendly, shatterproof plates. He handed three over to Junyoung and gave Youngseok a stack of napkins and three forks. Helpfully the two pups went to the table. Grabbing at an oven mitt Hongjoong retrieved the heated food. Walking with the tray he carefully served it out.
"Ketchup?" Youngseok asked, looking up at his appa with puppy eyes, as though he thought the male was going to say no.
"Of course" Hongjoong answered kindly. He wasn't sure where Youngseok developed this fear of being denied the simplest of requests, but it was something they would need to work on together. He grabbed the bottle of ketchup and joined the two at the table.
"It's good appa," Junyoung said with a mouthful of fries.
Hongjoong chuckled lightly. "I'm glad you like it, '' he answered, taking a bite of his burger.
"Can we play with Sumin and Minjae again?" Junyoung asked suddenly.
Freezing with the burger halfway to his mouth, Hongjoong gazed at his son. Did his pup just ask to play with somebody? They hated the playdates Hongjoong set up for them in the past. It was like pulling teeth to get them to engage with the friends Hongjoong tried to find for them. "The pups from the hallway?" Hongjoong clarified. Maybe he heard Junyoung wrong.
"Yes please appa" Junyoung nodded firmly. "They were fun. Sumin was cute too! He wanted my pokey."
"I did see you sharing with Sumin" Hongjoong reached over and brushed a stray hair out of Junyoung's face. "That was very kind of you. But you checked with San-ssi if it was okay right?"
Again Junyoung nodded. "I did!" he called proudly. "Sumin asked for one first but I looked at Sani for permission before I gave him one. He liked it."
"I think everyone likes pokey" Hongjoong chuckled. "It would be hard to find someone who doesn't."
"So?" Junyoung grabbed at a nugget, dipping it in his ketchup. "Can we play together?"
Hongjoong thought about it for a moment, before slowly nodding. "Yeah, I don't see why not" he answered with a shrug. "I didn't get San's number. But next time I see him I will. We can organize a play date to the park or something."
Junyoung nodded with a smile. "We could play soccer in the park," Junyoung agreed. He glanced towards his little brother. "Youngie liked playing with Minjae right?"
The alpha hadn't expected his youngest to respond, at least not with anything more than a nod. But today was proving to be full of surprises for Hongjoong, as Youngseok answered. "Minjae smelled nice." His voice was soft, hesitant. But at least it was words.
Pups didn't have much of a scent, so Hongjoong wasn't exactly sure what Youngseok would be picking up on other than the common milky aroma, but perhaps that was something there that Hongjoong had missed. The pups could easily have been scent by their parents and that's what Youngseok smelt.
"Yeah?" Hongjoong leaned forward, resting his chin in his hand to show interest. "Alright. It's official then. I will arrange a playdate for you four. It'll be fun."
Junyoung looked ready to get up from the table and locate his new friends himself. This only made Hongjoong laugh and reach over to pet Junyoung's hand gently. "But not tonight," the appa said. When the pup pouted Hongjoong continued, "you can watch a movie together after you have your bath."
That seemed to appease the pup as he gave a small nod.
Dinner finished quickly after that, a simple conversation shared between the three. With the dishes put in the sink Hongjoong directed both boys to the bathroom for a quick bath. With both boys cleaned and changed into a pair of fuzzy pyjamas they were all seated on the coach.
Hongjoong sat at the edge of the couch watching the two boys more than watching the movie, in fact he wasn't actually certain what movie Junyoung had selected. All night he had been on edge, waiting for another one of Youngseok's meltdowns. The tears almost always happened at night. Hongjoong at first had assumed it had been caused by nightmares, but Youngseok would begin crying before bedtime was announced. And worst of all, nothing provided comfort to the pup. Hongjoong had begun to think there was something wrong with his scent that failed to soothe Youngie.
So there Hongjoong was waiting for tears that ultimately never came. Youngseok remained curled up in his comforting ball, wrapped in blankets. On occasion Hongjoong would catch Youngseok smelling at himself. Had Minjae and Sumin's scents made such an impression on Youngie that he kept searching it out?
When Junyoung yawned for the third time that night Hongjoong decided it was time to put the pups to bed. Grabbing at the remote he paused the movie, earning a groan from both kids. "Bedtime" Hongjoong stated, pushing himself up, again bracing himself for distress. But instead he was welcomed with Youngseok reaching up for him. His eyes widened slightly, his arms wrapping around Youngseok to pick him up. "I got you" he whispered to the pup.
Holding Youngseok close Hongjoong could note the soft distress to the pups scent, however it was nothing compared to how it had been on previous days. He simply seemed a little nervous. Directing Junyoung to go before the, Hongjoong followed. On their first day after moving in, the alpha had set up a pair of bunk beds for his two. The boys were used to sharing a room, but back on Anyang they had a slightly larger bedroom. Here was small, only so much space, meaning they needed to stack the beds. Youngseok took the bottom bunk and Junyoung on top. Setting Youngseok on his bed, he assisted Junyoung in climbing up the ladder.
"Book?" Youngie asked, snuggling up under the covers.
"Sure puppy" Hongjoong answered, grabbing for one of their many books. His eomma had a habit of regularly buying them books. Meaning they had a wide collection. Pulling up the rocking chair he took a seat and started to read.
Perhaps Hongjoong simply was focused well today, at least not on the task at hand. Within minutes he picked up on the sound of another adult's voice.
"Pups," the voice called. "It's time for bed."
Youngseok's head snapped up with interest. Junyoung shifted in bed as well. Both turning towards the wall. Their scents spiked with curiosity. Hongjoong heard mumbling, likely from the pups that the statement was directed to.
"I know puppies" the words came again. It obviously was his neighbour speaking to these pups he spoke so highly about. But Hongjoong couldn't comprehend how the omega he met, with an attitude the size of Hongjoong's ass, could sound so sweet through the walls.
Again the response couldn't be heard but soon soft singing sounded. It was mumbled, but just loud enough to notice the sweet and gentleness. Hongjoong slowly shut the book. Both pups had curled up in bed, eyes drifting shut. Now, all distress is gone from Youngseok. This was the calmest, most content, Hongjoong had smelt from Youngie. Although it pulled at his heart, slight distaste, for the fact that this simple omega's voice through the walls provided more comfort than Hongjoong ever had.
What was wrong with Hongjoong? What was his scent lacking? Why wasn't he enough for his own pups?
Standing he tucked each boy in, kissing them on the head. Both laid with eyes closed, offering nothing but a slight mumble of response. They were so close to dreamland. Stepping away from the beds Hongjoong plugged the nightlight in before shutting off the lamp and exiting the room.
Walking into the living room Hongjoong was overwhelmed with the feeling of loneliness. It was rare, but there was the occasional night when the realization of him having nobody fell across him. And this was one of those nights. Perhaps it was the new apartment, being away from his family and friends, or maybe it was the interactions with the omega. Whatever it was Hongjoong was hyper aware of how empty the apartment felt. On impulse he pulled his phone out and dialed the number to one of the only people he knew in Seoul.
"Hey Hongjoong. Didn't expect to hear from you tonight" Eden answered his phone. "How had you been settling into Seoul?"
"Fine" Hongjoong answered with a small shrug. "The apartment is shit, Youngseok finally stopped crying tonight and Junyoung still isn't signed up for school."
"Sounds like a pretty eventful week" Eden gave a little laugh of amusement. "What can I do for my sweet mentee this evening?"
"Can you come over to check out some designs I made?" Hongjoong cut straight to the chase. He wasn't much for small talk, as he didn't enjoy it. And he needed a solid excuse as to why Eden would need to come over.
"You already have designs prepared?" Eden asked, a hint of surprise to his tone. Although he really shouldn't be all that shocked, Hongjoong was a workaholic. He had been even when he was back in Anyang, coming to Seoul likely only heightened it.
The story behind Hongjoong reasoning for coming to Seoul was an interesting one. For the past couple years the alpha had successfully been able to work primarily remotely – other than the rare occasion he would travel in for a specific project. Hongjoong would create his designs at his home in Anyang, creating sample pieces in his small workshop, before sending off the designs and samples to KQ.
Fashion had been Hongjoong's only dream for as long as he could remember, to be a fashion designer. He had dreams of going to Seoul University once he graduated, interning in New York, hell he had even been learning English to make this a reality. But when Soyoung announced her pregnancy, he knew his plans needed to change.
Gone was the opportunity to attend university in the big city, and certainly that included trips to America. He knew he wouldn't receive the training he had longed for. Although that didn't mean he needed to stop trying. Hongjoong was determined. He had set his mind on being a fashion designer.
As a result he started working several retail jobs, learning what he could in terms of styling clothing from those with more experience. Starting up social media has been a blessing. With Instagram on his side he started showcasing the clothing he reformed. Although the fabric itself wasn't personally cut and sewn by him, he had done enough alterations to the items that his personal touch showed through. On occasion he would sell a couple pieces. It wasn't much, but it made Hongjoong feel seen. He felt proud that his work was being noticed and appreciated. The first time he packaged up a jean jacket, reformed with cuts and painting on the back, he felt like he could do it. He could be a designer, even without the training.
A couple years ago Hongjoong had been reached out to by KQ Industries, a Seoul based Fashion Company. By no means well known in the fashion industry, in fact they were just starting out, nearly bankrupt. Primarily they did personal requests and orders – custom designs. And that worked for Hongjoong. All of his reformed pieces were original, so he was well aware of making individual designs. Best of all he was able to work from Anyang, sending in his designs to be processed.
However, everything went to hell a few months after signing with them. Their newest line was announced, a new designer had apparently joined the company, and an actor or idol of some kind by the name of Woobin had always been interested in modelling. Hongjoong didn't care at the time; his own line of clothing was set to come out a couple months after. He had worked tirelessly on the designs, wanting them to be perfect. But when the pictures had been sent out showcasing Woobin's clothing design, Hongjoong was shocked to see his own designs being used. The company he had trusted, to help him grow in the industry, had just taken his work and passed it off as another's, somebody with a bigger name.
Hongjoong was furious. How dare they do such a thing! He couldn't believe it. At first they denied it claiming that they were simply similar, but when Hongjoong was able to present the original copies of his work, stamped with the date and proof that it had been sent to KQ, the company had nothing to argue against. Instead they offered to buy them off of Hongjoong.
Perhaps if he was thinking more clearly, Hongjoong would've sued KQ instead, he's sure that would've given him more of a profit. But Hongjoong was a struggling artist, he had quit two of his part time jobs to work fully with KQ and best of all, Soyoung had announced her second pregnancy. He didn't have the time or finances for a lawsuit. So he accepted the settlement, although low, he was desperate.
What Hongjoong didn't account for was that KQ would get him blacklisted within the industry. It became known that they parted ways, and KQ had made it out to be Hongjoong's fault. That he had thrown a fit over the lack of funding and clientele. They had essentially made Hongjoong into the drama queen, ensuring nobody would want to work with him. So Hongjoong went back to work at retail stores, trying as he might to get back into social media, but even that had been hit with KQ's allegations against him.
He was in a worse position than when he started.
By some miracle Eden had taken pity on him. When the elder realized the mistreatment KQ gave to their designers he too had parted ways. Although this was much more dramatic and covered heavily in the news. Unlike Hongjoong, Eden was a known designer. He was a name that people would recognize, having him announce that they were parting ways made the media question KQ's work ethics, which of course Hongjoong was happy to see.
Anyways, after Eden announced he was leaving, he reached out to Hongjoong, said he loved working with the alpha in the past. He had seen the potential in him and knew that there was more he had to offer. With that in mind came an offer for Hongjoong to join EDENARY
Eden explained that he had recently arranged to rent a two-story storefront within the city. A place where the team could finally work out of, a home base. The bottom was set to be the store, selling their clothes. Their actual designs set out on the rack for anyone to buy. The upstairs would be their studio and workspace. Where the clothing itself was actually prepared.
It was everything Hongjoong could ask for. It was regular employment in the industry that he wanted and a chance to learn from professionals. However, there was a catch. Eden needed Hongjoong present in Seoul. He needed Hongjoong to work shifts in the store, meet with the models, communicate with the rest of the team.
Hongjoong considered turning the opportunity down. He didn't know if it was the right choice to uproot his kids and move them to a whole new city. They had already been in such distress since losing Soyoung three years ago, he didn't want to cause any more issues for them. But it had been his eomma that talked some sense into him. She insisted that he had given everything for those pups, recreated an entire new future for them, and built everything from the ground up with them in mind. Sometimes you need to do something for yourself. She insisted that families move all the time that the pups would adjust, although slowly, they would make do. And she promised to come visit regularly.
Within less than a month Hongjoong had them packed and moved to the big city of Seoul, unfortunately without much planning. But that was okay, Hongjoong planned one day at a time anyways.
"Okay yeah," Eden said with another laugh. "I'll be there within the hour."
"See ya soon" Hongjoong said before swiftly ending the call. Knowing that his mentor would be there shortly, the alpha had just enough time to take a quick shower and change into another set of clothing. Now dressed in a pair of black sweatpants and a white t-shirt tucked in at the waistline, he exited the bathroom to check on his pups.
Youngseok had climbed free from his bed and climbed up into the top bunk with Junyoung. Perhaps he needed to look into another option for bedding. He wasn't sure how comfortable he felt with his three year old climbing those stairs in the dark.
Stepping towards the bed he peered inside, a smile tugging at his lips. Junyoung had wrapped a protective arm around the younger one. Reaching up Hongjoong tugged the blankets higher and adjusted the plushie Youngseok was holding so it wasn't nearly suffocating Junyoung.
"I love you so much" Hongjoong mumbled to them. "I know I'm not the perfect appa for you, there is so much I can do better with" he whispered into the darkness, knowing they couldn't hear him right now. "But I promise my sweet puppies I am trying my best. Sometimes that is all appa can do. I love you puppies, appa loves you." Leaning in he gently kissed each boy on the forehead, releasing his eucalyptus scent.
With a sigh he stepped away, having heard a knock on the door. He moved away from the bed and closed the bedroom door on his way out. "Hey" Hongjoong greeted as he tugged open the front door for Eden.
"Hey Hongjoong" Eden replied stepping into the apartment, discarding his jacket.
"Hope you don't mind that I tagged along" Maddox said, coming in behind Eden.
"Of course not" Hongjoong smiled, reaching forward to hug the other. Hongjoong had gotten close to Maddox over the short time they worked together. He felt much more carefree with the elder, like he could behave as the younger he was. It also helped that Maddox was a beta, meaning his scent had a natural calm to it.
"How are the pups?" Maddox asked, moving into the apartment.
"Good" Hongjoong nodded. "They're still adjusting but that's understandable." A smile began tugging at Hongjoong's lips. "Youngseok went to sleep without crying tonight. This is the first time all week. And he willingly had a bath. I don't know what got into him, but he was so much more relaxed. Even his scent had been brighter."
"Oh that's great Joongie!" Maddox beamed, tucking his feet under himself as he sat on the couch. Eden claimed the spot on the chair, grabbing at the designs as he did so. "I told you everything would work out."
"Yeah well most things are going better," Hongjoong mumbled.
"What's wrong?" Maddox leaned forward with interest.
"My stupid neighbour" Hongjoong grumbled. "He has proven to be a real jackass. I tried to introduce myself this morning and instantly he started throwing a fit, accusing me of some high and mighty alpha parenting. Then when I saw him in the afternoon he made a crack about buying the pups McDonalds and then threw food at me! He literally threw food at me!"
"He threw food at you?" Eden glanced up from the designs.
"Yeah" Hongjoong nodded.
"Is he an omega?" Eden wondered.
"Not that it's relevant" Hongjoong answered, "but yeah he is."
"Maybe he's close to his heart" Eden mumbled, turning back to the designs.
Hongjoong rolled his eyes "that's like saying a women is moody cause of her period. His sub gender has nothing to do with it." Hongjoong hated when people were placed into these stupid stereotypical boxes cause of things like gender.
Eden shrugged in response. "These designs?"
"Yeah" Hongjoong nodded firmly. "I've been working on them for a while, but it's lacking something, I just don't know what."
The elder alpha hummed in response, slowly flipping through the pages with his eyes gazing over it curiously. "I see what you mean," Eden responded. "It's a good start, but that's all it is. A start. It lacks the needed attention, right now it's just not grabbing me."
Hongjoong knew this, it was everything he had been saying to himself, but it still hurt to hear another say it. He nodded slowly. "Yeah, I just can't seem to figure it out. I don't really think it's the clothing. It fits nicely together. But it's lacking."
Maddox held his hand out for the design. "Can I see it?" he requested.
Handing it over, Eden began talking with Hongjoong about them. "Perhaps changing the colour scheme. Black and white is done to death. It's not that the styling is wrong. It's simply common I would say. What about making the pants red?"
"Red leather pants makes a statement" Hongjoong nodded in agreement. "But that strikes me more as an idol look, or clubbing at the very least. This was supposed to be a standard everyday look."
"Yeah but it's a little too standard," Eden sighed softly. "We've seen it a dozen times before. It's predictable. The black leather looks like an alpha. Every alpha has a dozen outfits like that in their closet already. Hell, I think LEEZ has been working on a similar design."
"Why not make it to look for omegas?" Maddox asked, putting the papers down.
"You could I suppose" Eden shrugged slightly. "Change some fabrics around, make the shirt a little larger so it's not as tight. It's a real sex appeal now, make it slightly more softer and it could be great."
"Make it softer?" Hongjoong grabbed at the designs to view, although he already had them memorized. "I could make it a slender fit. The shoulders are set to be broad, primarily an alpha style, but if I thin it out it'll fall lower on the collar bone."
"If you change the white dress shirt into something pale like a yellow or pink it would go well," Eden suggested. "But I'm not sure about the leather pants."
"No," Hongjoong said, shaking his head. "I would want to leave this style."
"It doesn't fit the stereotypical omega appearance," Eden argued.
A smirk tugged across Hongjoong's lips. "Exactly. It's different, unseen before."
"It's also very harsh," Eden argued. "Omegas are usually softer. Are you sure this is the direction you want to go in?"
"Positive" Hongjoong said determinedly. "They are usually perceived as softer because that's how society has made them. But that doesn't mean they need or want to be that way. Their fashion choices are limited. Let's remove those limitations. I want to take this look, these colourings, and make it suitable for an omega.
"We should not be defined by society's standards. Especially not in terms of our gender. Colours and fabrics do not belong to an alpha or an omega. It should be available to all.
"You want something that hasn't been seen before? This is it. This will do it. It's unexpected, it's unconventional actually. This will get EDENARY noticed. A fully gender neutral clothing line. Wear whatever you want to wear. Be whoever you want to be. This is what I want to do, that's the clothing I want to put out."
Eden smiled proudly at Hongjoong. "Now that's what I'm looking for Hongjoong. That is the passion I want to see from you. I want to see you make a statement with your work. If you do that then you will have what it takes to go very far in this industry." Eden stood up from his seat and walked over to pat Hongjoong on the shoulder. "I'm going for a smoke."
Hongjoong nodded in response. A bright smile plastered on his face. He had made his mentor proud. He actually liked his idea. He couldn't let the elder down. He grabbed for his discarded pencil and started working.
"Give it a V-neck instead of a rounded cut," Maddox suggested, leaning forward to watch over his shoulder.
"That could work" Hongjoong agreed sketching it out. "I need to slender out the waistline a little. Omegas often have a different bust than alphas, so I want something that can work for both."
"Similar to a beta design" Maddox added. "Creating something down the middle."
Nodding Hongjoong glided his pencil across the paper. "The chest is set to be a little tighter. Which I hope will suit an omega."
"It shoulder be fine" Maddox shrugged. "They tend to have a more pronounced chest than alphas, but I'm sure you can work with it." Hongjoong focused on his work. Maddox took this as an opportunity to say, "so, your omega neighbour."
"What about him?" Hongjoong asked not even looking up.
"Is he hot?" Maddox cut to the chase.
"Yeah" Hongjoong answered shortly. "He's got a nice neck."
"You've been checking out his neck?" Maddox snickered.
Hongjoong's hand froze, slowly looking up at the elder. "Well I mean... It's nice for necklaces or whatever. It's slender. He wears those V-cut knit sweaters... draws the attention."
"So is he mated?" Maddox asked, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"Why would I know if he was mated or not?" Hongjoong snapped, a little harsher than he intended.
"Well" Maddox answered, remaining completely calm. "You have been checking out his neck apparently. It would be noticeable if he has a bite mark or not."
Hongjoong nibbled his bottom lip lightly. He hesitated in answering. Of course he had noticed the long since faded scar. The omegas' past were written right across his skin. Sighing softly Hongjoong responded, "he has a mark, but it's faded."
Maddox's eyes widened slightly. "A broken bond?" he gasped gently. "That's... that's rare."
"Yeah it is" Hongjoong mumbled.
"Hongjoong!" Eden called from the balcony. He had a cigarette between his fingers. Stepping in from the balcony door he continued to call out for the other alpha. "There's someone on the balcony looking for you."
Hongjoong glanced up at the elder, pencil still in hand. "There is?"
"Yup," Eden nodded. "It's an omega. A real cutie, but he's got an attitude problem. He demands to see you this instant. I was just out there enjoying my smoke and he came ready for war. He chilled out a little when he noticed I wasn't you."
Hongjoong released a deep groan. With the mention of an attitude problem he knew instantly that the specific omega was none other than his neighbour. The omega that had a chip on his shoulder and freely rode a high horse. Pushing himself up off the couch he moved towards the balcony door.
Stepping outside he glanced towards the omega before leaning against the balcony railing. "You requested my presence?" Hongjoong snorted a little. Request was a kind word to use. It was more like the omega had ordered or demanded. "How may I help you?"
"I thought I talked to you about smoking this morning, '' the omega stated. It amazed Hongjoong with the way the omega conducted him. There was nothing submissive regarding his behaviour – which would've been typical for an omega. Usually, one would cave to an alpha's will and submit to orders. Never had Hongjoong experienced an omega with this level of backbone, which stood up to an alpha and talked back. Hongjoong was impressed by it. It was feisty and sexy.
"I don't think I recall" the alpha answered back with a careless tone. "Other than you telling me it was a silent killer that destroyed my scent. Although I don't see how that's relevant right now."
"Uh, my windows are right there" the omega stated, pointing slightly behind him and the opened windows.
"That's nice" Hongjoong answered. "I'm glad you have windows. They're very important. I'm pretty sure there's legal regulations regarding fire safety."
"Your cigarette smoke keeps coming inside" the man crossed his arms over his chest and continued to stand his ground. The moon was shining a bright white light across the man's naturally tanned skin.
"And what exactly do you suggest I do?" the alpha asked. He gave a small shrug. "It's my balcony. Like I said this morning, where else should I smoke?"
"I don't know," the omega said. "But the smoke keeps coming inside."
"How about you close your windows?" Hongjoong suggested. "That way the smoke wont is getting inside."
"It's too hot with the windows shut" Blondie argued.
"Put on you're A/C" Hongjoong suggested. What was with this omega? Did everything need to spell out for him?
The omega mumbled slightly.
"What was that?" Hongjoong questioned, leaning forward slightly.
"I can't afford it," the omega admitted.
"Then that's not my problem" Hongjoong shrugged.
"Are you kidding me? You're just brushing my concerns off as though they are nothing?" the omega grumbled. Again he appeared to be getting more agitated as he continued to stand tall with force.
"I'm not brushing them off," Hongjoong explained. "They just aren't valid." Hongjoong was starting to get annoyed even more with this individual. What did the omega expect? He had pups too. But he knew better than to expose them to the smoke. He was always out on the balcony and would wash the scent off quickly. He never let it get near Junyoung or Youngseok.
"Aren't they valid? My concerns aren't valid?" the omega grumbled. His back had grown stiff and his shoulders pushed back in pride. Standing straight he forced himself to appear taller. "Smoke inhalation isn't a valid complaint?"
"Exactly" Hongjoong cheered. "A little smoke never killed anyone. Not when you can simply shut your windows and doors."
"It's not just a little smoke," the omega hissed. "It's every single night. My entire apartment is filled with the stupid smoke. For fuck's sake my blankets are starting to take on the scent!"
"I'll be sure to buy you a new blanket," Hongjoong answered with ease. "Tell you what, I'll even get you two. What kind of blankets do you like? I picture you enjoying something soft and plush, I'm certain they match your comforting personality. But maybe you're into expensive silk ones."
"The only thing I'm into is getting some damn sleep around here" the omega stated. He took a step towards the alpha, his eyes glowing with anger. The orange scent had long since lost all form of sweetness and was now completely bitter. "And for the record, smoking isn't the only concern. This balcony is not just yours. I believe I told you that once before, but clearly you need a refresher. I don't take kindly to coming out onto my balcony to find cigarette butts thrown around. Or the discarded laundry." As if to make a point the omega kicked his toe lightly against a discarded pair of Hongjoong's boxers and kicked it in Hongjoong's direction.
In Hongjoong's defence he had set out his laundry to dry that afternoon on his clothing line. He must not have realized some of his clothes had fallen.
"Not to mention" the omega continued "the fucking boxes you had blocking my apartment for the past week. I couldn't even exit through my door because you so inconsiderately blocked it."
Hongjoong found himself rolling his eyes. From his pocket he retrieved his pack of cigarettes and lighter. With the pure intention of annoying the other he held it out to him. "Here. Have a smoke. Liven up a little."
Much to the alphas surprise the omega accepted the smoke with a smile. He positioned it between his fingers and rose to his lips. Leaning forward slightly he signalled for Hongjoong to light it. With fumbling hands, surprise laced on his face, Hongjoong raised his lighter.
The omega breathed in the cigarette with expertise, he had obviously done this before. Breathing out slowly he nodded to himself. "Ah, cheap stuff. It's not that good anyways." Blondie quickly dropped the cigarette to the ground and stomped it out. It wouldn't have been so dramatic if the omega hadn't also been holding the entire pack. Without so much as a bat of his eye he tossed the pack over the edge of the railing, discarding them to the ground below them.
"What the fuck man!" Hongjoong hissed reaching for the pack, but it was too late. "That costs me good money!"
"Like I said," the omega shrugged. "It's the cheap stuff, far from worth it." The man squinted his eyes and scowled in anger. Taking a step forward he pushed his index finger into the alpha's chest. "But let me explain something to you." the omega hissed. His voice had gotten low and deep.
"This is an apartment building. People live here. And I get that you might not comprehend that yet, but this isn't some temporary stop over for some people. This is home. You can't come into someone's home and make this level of a shit show. You might come and go as you please, but not everybody does.
"There are children that live beside you. And considering your smoke keeps coming into my apartment you are exposing them to it. Not to mention exposing your own pups to your stupidity. That's not right for a child to experience Three College students living above you. They have proven to be more responsible than you are. None of them deserve to be exposed to this level of bullshit."
Taking a deep breath, the omega continued. "Beneath you are seniors. They've lived here since this damn apartment was built. It's been the only home they've known for decades. It's where they raised their own pups. Where they mated. And now their peaceful life gets ruined with cigarette butts falling through the sky to their balcony!"
"You might love this carefree lifestyle of yours, but not everyone does. This is a place filled with single parents struggling to make things work, with pups that are just barely starting to grow, students that should be studying and seniors that just want some peace. This is not the place for your youthful ignorance."
The omega gave Hongjoong's chest a firm shove as he stepped away. "Smarten the fuck up, Kim Hongjoong." Spinning on his heels, he marked the end of the conversation. Hongjoong had been taken so deeply by surprise that he was left speechless. Sliding back into his own apartment, the omega slammed his door shut leaving Hongjoong standing there in stunned silence.
