Chapter 3: Succulent Covenant
[Camden / Ravendale district. 15:52]
Light 'pitter patter' of rain turned into wet thuds as icy water raced to meet the ground. What used to be a lovely sunny morning with small chances of humidity has completely engulfed with overhung blankets of grey clouds. However, it didn't stop the Police to work on their current search for a deviant AX400 - 'Kara'
Hank signaled at (L/n), "Listen, the bus driver saw the Android last at... 2:30. Then it was seen at the convenience store."
Connor, as an obedient machine, kept silent and observant on the district. Drops of water trickled down his face as he stood there frozen, hearking what Hank Anderson congregated from the patrolling police officers, regarding deviant's latest tracks. But inconspicuously, the Android would send glances towards Dr.(L/n) who was seemingly shaking from the cold.
"It stole wire cutters. There must be a reason." - Conner spoke.
"Wire cutters? The fuck are you talkin' about?"
"I checked the CCTV while you were questioning the clerk. The Android was caught stealing them. It was looking for a place to hide... Maybe it didn't go too far."
Hank's mouth slightly gaped before he nodded understandingly, fathoming that the Android had a point. "Maybe...All right, then keep an eye on any suspiciousness. I'll tell Collin to keep officers within this area."
As the lieutenant conveyed, he left Connor to do what he requires to do - investigate deviant trail, thus leaving him with Dr.(L/n) once more.
Suddenly, Connor felt the rain above him stop, despite the water droplets beginning to grow larger and fall frequently. Above him was an umbrella. Drops cascade from it rims as pretty as any waterfall. Turning around, he saw (Y/n) raising her umbrella higher to his side, trying to block the rain from reaching him, familiarly to how Connor did to her in the Park earlier. "Well? We got to sweep this whole street."
For a moment Connor's eyes beamed. "Yes, Dr.(L/n)"
[Camden Street. 16:14]
Roving on each local part of the street, a female, and her android searched through any clues for the deviant's whereabouts as it was obligated for them. Indubitably, searching for a deviant in a vast area brimming with residents proved to be a hassled task with fruitless results - thus, as an engineer, Dr.(L/n) turned her voice controls towards RK800 for a solution :
"Connor, initiate analysis on our current location."
Connor's LED blinked, inquiring the voice command reflectively - "There are several locations within this district. 24-retail store, Eastern Motel, a parking lot, an old squat along with several bus stops."
Theorizing that the android's actions were, indeed, uncalled - AX400 and YK500 could be anywhere now, petrified. The two began approaching a metal fencing which stood in front of an old squat. Although the place seemed trashed and abounded - Connor decided to check it, his back facing Dr.(L/n) "It seems deviants get overwhelmed with emotions and make irrational decisions."
"Would you look at that, just like humans!" - the female scoffed, "But fine, if AX400 ran away out of fear that the authorities might take them, then it didn't kidnap Mr.Williams' daughter as he described, but rather went into hiding with her?"
"Perhaps it took the child to escape from deactivation," Connor added as he kneeled on the floor, scanning the torn fence. For a moment, he detected a small portion of Thirium on the fence, mixed with rain. "...There's Blue Blood. An Android passed this fence."
Hereupon, (L/n) and RK800 knew their next clue - the old squat. The outside of the house was covered in a kind of tile that had been ripped away in places to expose the bricked skeleton beneath. Though in this neighborhood, it wasn't the only building in such condition. With assistant from RK800, (Y/n) swiftly got under the fence opening with Connor behind her.
"It seems deviancy has a keyword - emotions. It doesn't explain why these recurring errors even develop within Androids - But another corrupted AX400 model? Heh...Déja-vu."
A sudden shift in tone caught Connor's attention, her words puzzling him - another AX400? "Dr.(L/n), have you encountered a similar deviant model in the past?"
"...yes, I did." - she said, serenely. But her eyes held the contrary. "Years ago, back when we first started creating the AX400 model. I was still a newbie in Cyberlife back then, so I never encountered a deviant before that."
Upon the umbrella was the rhythm of the rain, each drop a clear beat upon the cerise fabric. Being under it with (L/n), made Connor's software stability more perplex and steady. "Did it happen at work?"
"We were testing it. I was there, and Kamski, along with other engineers who tested it's... fidelity." - A rush of fear gripped onto her as she remembered that specific day "So we were taking final tests, ready to sign it as a successful model. But it, um, diverged. Like the realization that it was a merchandise hit it hard and fast."
Neglecting the squat, Connor stayed calm, his eyes locked into Miss(L/n)'s narrowed ones. She spoke so softly, that his sensors told him to linger for a little while longer just to listen to her voice - "What happened to it specifically?"
"Kamski told to modify the model's main-drive. As in for that specific Android..." - she gulped, pressing her lips together. Connor understood very well what it meant.
What was a short second of placid silence between Him and Dr.(Y/n), was comparable to being in a perpetual haze for Connor. He desired to confront her, however, a blatant yet muffled crash was heard from the squat's nearby entrance, bringing the duo out of their stance. Someone was, indeed, there.
Connor and (Y/n) exchanged glances. "Stay behind me."
With a swift movement, Connor barged into the building; his movements fleet and calculated, meanwhile (Y/n) apprehensively took cover behind him. "Anybody home? This is Detroit City Police. We came here for questioning."
Inside the house, the walls stood firm, the window frames lumbered from the outside's heavy rain. When (Y/n)(L/n) peered from Connor's shoulders at the surrounding - she saw an Android. A lonesome, debilitated humanoid machine was presented in the middle of, what seems, a deficient dining room.
Both the Android and the house were amiss: "Yes. Ralph is here alone."
"We're in here for investigation and- Oh my stars!" - (Y/n) didn't have the time to explain her arrival as she gasped in anguish, catching both the male Androids off guard. "What happened to your physical features?!"
Dr.(L/n) rushed towards the Android - a WR600 model.
"W-what?" Although he stood still, with his hands held tight together, he kept tremblings. His hands looked like worn leather, but most trepidatiously was the huge gash of a scar across his left cheek that reached all the way to his eye. (Y/n) was bummed. She found her hand reaching to his face automatically causing Raph to finch. "Don't touch Ralph!"
"Um, I apologize - don't be alarmed, we won't harm you." (Y/n) Drew her hands shyly. "I'm a doctor."
"A... a doctor?"
Connor stood aside, his LED flashing yellow as he scanned WR600's behavior. It gave him a great discomfort seeing how close (L/n) got to the stranger. "Dr.(L/n), please take precaution-"
"It's all right," - she waved Connor off "All I want to do is ask you for analysis to make sure that everything is in place. Okay?"
Ralph kept his eyes down, terrified to gaze up at the lady in front of him. "Yes - Ralph is okay. Ralph's swell."
"Okay... Ralph," - and thus, the Dr.(L/n) straightened her posture "Freeze all motor functions."
Upon hearing the voice command, a Cyberlife Android shall freeze within a second and cancel all its actions - no excuses; and that's what Ralph was obligated to do, though his trembling didn't ease. "State your model."
"WR600 - #021... 7-7 53 034" - He talked in a cadenced voice, as rhymeless mumbles.
"Access your latest configuration." - tilting her head aside, she kept her eyes on WR600's facial motions. But he resisted on being silent. "We're looking for an AX400. Have you seen it?"
"Raph's seen nobody."
"Are there any androids here? There's blue Blood on the fence."
"Other androids?" - The damaged Android responded with a distant voice. "No, Ralph scratched himself coming through. That's Ralph's blood."
The two sat knee deep in silence. The air is so brittle it could snap, and if it doesn't, Ralph thought he might. (Y/n) kept looking on Ralph's suspicious stuttering, as she glanced at Connor every now and then. It was obvious - Ralph's stressed.
"Connor," - (L/n) finally spoke, "Search this place."
Heeding Dr.(L/n)'s bidding, the machine silently proceeded to scan his surrounding. Connor kept peering between rooms, his scanners directing clues to search for more - but his mind kept engaging onto (Y/n)'s interaction with the blistered Android.
Miss(L/n) would run her finger over the scar's ridges and around its jagged edges. They were callused and raw, caused by burning, probably deliberate. Every pinprick touch felt unfeeling for Ralph.
"This is grotesque." - unobtrusive, (Y/n) examined Ralph's thin, blue-jowled face. "How did you get shaken up so badly? What happened?"
The machine named Ralph admitted being previously abused by former residents who used to pass by - he spoke of them in small words, as if scared of mentioning the delinquents. Still hesitant nonetheless, Ralph stood still, letting Dr.(L/n) lightly touch his facial features with her soft hands. "You must excuse Ralph. Ralph didn't know the lady had a gentle touch."
Connor had only a glimpse of the upstairs rooms before Hank's rambling voice boomed from outside, diverting his and (Y/n)'s attention: "(Y/n), Connor! What's taking you two so long?"
"We're coming, Lieutenant." - signaling for the lady to come with him, Connor felt somehow satisfied that she to leave Ralph's domain. Just before he could step out - Connor, for the first time, raised his eyes and looked directly into Ralph's face, making him tremble.
AX400 'Kara' was not here.
