"Something Wild"

A student sat at their desk, staring down at the problems they had been working for hours blankly. They were tired of the way things had been going, in school, at home. The work had been consuming all their time an energy. They had been barely able to work on their personal projects of writing stories and drawing- things they wanted to do and had people waiting on her to do.

You had your maps drawn

You had other plans to hand your hopes on

Every road they led, you felt so wrong

So you found another way...

Finally the student threw down their pencil and leaned back in their chair, tears of stress and frustration gathering at the corner of their eyes. This was not how they had planned this year to go; it was only the first quarter and they felt overloaded. While their friends were able to go have fun or be grounded, they were stuck inside doing chores and homework and sleeping when their parents told them to go to bed- let alone do the extracurricular things such as the clubs they had to drop or go exercise like their mother had planned for them to do every day.

You've got a big heart

The way you see the world, it got you this far

You might have some bruises and a few scars

But you know you're gonna be okay.

They were a good student, taking all advanced classes. They were doing well in these classes, and they were proud of taking so many. But they were starting to wonder if the stress and workload was worth the pride and perks that were given later in their school career. The student closed their eyes and went to their happy place. Where they were free of the struggles of school and limitations of the real world and be themselves, if not for a few imaginary moments.

And even though you're scared, you're stronger than you know...

Suddenly the student didn't feel like the student, but someone much bigger than themself. They could go on adventures, feel pain and joy and freedom instead of boredom and the average routine of reality.

If you're lost out where the lights are blinding

Caught in the stars are hiding,

That's when something wild calls you home, home.

If you face the fear that keeps you frozen,

Chase the sky into the ocean,

That's when something wild calls you home, home.

They had their imaginary friends, if you will, that kept them company. The student was no longer a student, but a resident of their own little world where none of the bothers of the real world could bother them.

Sometimes the past can

Make the ground beneath you feel like quick sand

You don't have to worry

You reach for my hand

And I know you're gonna be okay

You're gonna be okay

Their team of friends held their hands out to them, and they smiled and took it. Maybe things were not going so well here either, but they all knew somewhere that in the end things were going to end out for the best. It's not the end if it's not okay, isn't it?

And even if you're scared, you're stronger than you know...

If they could fight evil and take on the adventures they could here, who says there isn't a way to figure out their homework situation at their desk in that realm? It may be a matter of mind versus tangibility, but the student was more than the student in this world. They were a fighter, a friend. Hurt and healed, with more stories than anyone in the real world could conceive.

If you're lost out where the lights are blinding,

Caught in the stars are hiding,

That's when something wild calls you home, home.

If you face the fear that keeps you frozen.

Chase the sky into the ocean,

That's when something wild calls you home, home.

The student stepped out of their imagination and back into the world where they were sitting at their desk, homework still taunting them.

Calls you home

The student picked up their pencil, filled with new perseverance and determination.

Calls you home

The simple things had caused the student to stay home from many fun things: local festivals, family outings, after school extracurricular activities.

Calls you home

The student had two homes, their imaginary world and this world. When they were unable to draw strength from one, they could always go to the other for the support.

Calls you home

What was their home? Their imaginary mindscape, or the double-edged reality?  What called them to it? The want to get away, or the need to discover themself?

If you're lost out where the lights are blinding,

Caught in all the stars are hiding,

That's when something wild calls you home...

The student was maybe lost in the blinding lights right now, where all the stars and opportunities were hiding, but they knew that if they kept going that wild something would bring them home.

If you're lost out where the lights are blinding,

Caught in all the stars are hiding,

That's when something wild calls you home.

If you face the fear that keeps you frozen,

Chase the sky into the ocean,

That's when something wild calls you home.

The student slammed down their pencil, work finished without them even realizing it. They silently thanked that something wild for calling them to their other reality for a little bit, and smiled.

-----------------------

I'm having a lot of stress with homework and school right now, so this is me half-ranting half-trying-to-console-myself.

Like, enough stress that built up really quickly from doing hours of homework and having to chose and feel guilty about skipping out on the family outings or dropping robotics club and because of the amount of homework that I literally had a small break down right before my family left to go meet some other friends at their new house.

I heard this song, and something really spoke to me. I can't describe it but... something wild really does call to me. This song is literally me right now. By chance I found this a few days ago and it spoke to me, and now it literally describes exactly how I'm feeling. It makes me want to do something with it, more than this.

But right now I can't, because I've already spent waaaaay too much time writing this real quick and not getting my damn homework done.

Meh. I'll get it done eventually. Maybe a few more frustrated screams and tears but I'll get it done. But don't be expecting too much from me in the meantime.

-Becca out.
