Lawsuit - Day II

Impa's POV

Today, it's Mipha's turn on the witness stand, then mine. The courtroom quiets down as soon as Mipha takes her seat. She looks calm but serious. AKA professional.

She states her name and takes the oath. Out of the two attorneys, Kirby is the first to question her. "Can you tell us about your relationship with Link Miyamoto?"

Mipha nods. "We've been friends since childhood. Our families are very close, so I've known him for as long as I can remember."

"And were you present on the day of the attack?" Kirby asks. He's gentle with her, probably to show the judge that this is a sensible topic and that people were actually affected by Karusa's actions.

"Yes, I was there," Mipha confirms.

"Can you describe what happened from your perspective?"

Mipha takes a deep breath, her hands tightly folded on her lap. "I remember seeing Link and Karusa arguing. It escalated quickly. Suddenly, there was a fight. Link was knocked down. When I rushed over to help, he was not breathing."

The courtroom is silent, everyone's solely focused on her.

Kirby lets the calm settle in. He wants everyone to feel the pain of those memories. After a few seconds, he asks her, "What did you do next?"

"I performed CPR," Mipha says. She is being formal with her answers, but there's definitely a lot of emotion behind her eyes. "I did everything I could to keep his organs alive until the paramedics arrived."

"That must have been tremendously difficult to bear," Kirby says and pulls a sad face to get some more sympathy points from the judge. "Did you witness the extent of Link's injuries?"

"Yes," Mipha replies, some emotion hanging onto her tone this time. Unlike Link, she does not dare to look at Karusa. She keeps her eyes on her hands. Sometimes she pauses to look up at the attorney or Link, but her eyes never settle for long. "He had severe head trauma, four broken ribs, a torn ACL, chest contusions, and internal bleedings."

"Running onto the field to help you childhood friend... What an admirable act of courage... Are you aware that you were one of the few lucky people on that field who left without a mark?"

"That is not true. I might not have been physically affected, but emotionally..." She stops herself and looks at Link again. "For a moment, nobody knew what was going to happen. It's a miracle that Link survived."

"From a medical standpoint, how grave was his condition at that moment? How close was he to losing his life?"

"It was extremely serious." Her voice catches briefly in her throat but she pushes the words out. "When I reached him, Link's heart had fully stopped. At that point, he was clinically dead." A tear rolls down the side of her face. She doesn't notice it at first, and keeps going as if nobody was staring at her flushed cheeks and tight shoulders. "If I hadn't started CPR immediately, he would have suffered irreversible brain damage or worse. Thankfully, the paramedics arrived in time to take over. Still... there were moments where I wasn't sure if he would make it."

Kirby looks emotionally affected and I can't tell if he's just acting or if this is actually hard to hear. "As someone who has spent a lot of time around athletes," he starts slowly, "would you say the level of violence Karusa used was typical of sports-related altercations, or did it seem far more dangerous?"

Having noticed the tear, Mipha quickly wipes it with the sleeve of her blouse. "I'm sorry," she whispers, but Kirby reassures her that there is no need to apologize. "It wasn't a shove or even a hard hit," she answers. "Karusa's attack was vicious... it felt deliberate. As if he had planned it. The amount of force he used—it was clear he wasn't trying to just win a fight. He wanted to hurt Link, and he did."

"Since that day, have you seen any lasting effects on Link—whether it be physical, emotional, or otherwise? How has this incident changed him?"

"Physically, Link is no longer the same, of course. His body has been through multiple surgeries, and he can't move the way he used to."

She stops herself for a sec. Her eyes are seeking and avoiding Link at the same time, and when Kirby follows her nervous looks and lands on Link, he sees an opportunity and takes it instantly. "Mipha," he pushes, "how else has the event affected Link?"

"He..." She looks back down at her hands. "Emotionally, he's been distant. I suppose. Sometimes it feels like a part of him was taken away that day."

Kirby nods. "Thank you, Mipha, for your courage to speak up and share the truth with us. No further questions."

Kirby takes his seat and the defense attorney Agahnim stands up. He looks ready to challenge Mipha the way he did with Link. After he buttons his suit, and brushes out any creases, he clears his throat and steps forward.

"You're a medical student, correct?" he asks Mipha in an almost lethal tone.

"Yes." Mipha sounds a little intimidated by Agahnim. She has lost some of her composure during Kirby's questioning and I wish the court would give her a break to recover from all the questions. I hope he'll go easy on her.

"So, you're not yet a licensed doctor?" Agahnim asks.

She nods once. "That is correct."

"Then how could you have known whether Link was in need of CPR?"

Mipha rolls back her shoulders, neck stiff as she lifts her eyes up from her hands to bravely meet his eyes. "I've been trained extensively in emergency medical procedures. When Link was unresponsive and without a pulse, I knew what I had to do."

"As a medical student, you are aware that CPR can cause additional injuries, such as broken ribs and internal bleeding, correct?"

"Yes, that is a known risk," Mipha says, "but it's necessary to save a life."

"Is it always necessary?" he asks her with an arrogant undertone.

I recognize Agahnim's technique from one of my pre-law classes. It's smart but also a bit of a dick move. No matter what Mipha answers, she'll be in the wrong. He's setting her up for failure.

"To the best of your judgment," he sets the trap, "did you break some of Link's ribs when you performed CPR?"

"That is possible, yes. But—"

"Then surely you must agree that it is possible that in your haste to help a childhood friend, you might have misjudged his condition and performed CPR when it wasn't actually needed?"

"I don't believe so. His condition seemed critical," Mipha states.

"But you're still a student, Mipha. Still learning and gaining experience. There was no medical professional at sight to determine whether Link was in need of CPR. So your intervention might have caused and worsened some of Mr. Miyamoto's injuries!"

"Objection!" Thank you Kirby for protesting this BS. "The defense's questioning is speculative and strays from the matter at hand. We are here to focus on the actions and consequences of Karusa, not to delve into hypothetical scenarios regarding Mipha's medical procedures. I request that the court disregard the defense's questions as they introduce unwarranted speculation not supported by evidence and distract from the critical issue of the defendants' liability."

"With all due respect, Mr. Kirby," Agahnim instantly fires back, "You just stated that our focus should be on the actions of Karusa. However, if Mipha's medical intervention potentially caused and worsened Link's injuries, wouldn't it be unjust to attribute the full extent of his injuries solely to my client?"

The judge takes a good look at both lawyers and then makes her decision. "Mr. Kirby, while I understand your concern about speculative questioning, it is important to address all relevant aspects that could impact the case. The defense is entitled to question witnesses on potential factors that might influence the extent of the injuries. I will allow the questioning to continue but advise both parties to stay within the bounds of what is directly relevant to the case at hand."

The defense attorney turns back toward Mipha. She looks both courageous and frightened, but most of all, she looks ready for whatever is coming her way.

"Mipha, did you fully consider the risks of performing CPR on Link?"

"I did."

"And do you believe it possible that your intervention might have exacerbated his condition?"

There it is... He's got her in his trap now, a fucking trick question. If she says no, she'll look like a liar because she already admitted she might have broken some of his ribs. And if she answers with yes, then they'll pin some of his injuries on her, making Karusa look more innocent than he deserves...

Mipha takes a quiet breath and answers, "My primary concern was to ensure he had a chance to survive."

Agahnim shakes his head. He's not satisfied until she admits to it.

"Did you, or did you not, perform an action that had the potential to worsen Link's condition? Answer the question."

Mipha breaks eye contact, wiping another tear. "Yes," she says defeated, her voice low and restrained. "I took an action that could have exacerbated his condition." She's trying so hard not to break down, it's actually hard to watch. "But my intention was to keep his brain and organs alive until professional medical help arrived."

"No further questions."

Mipha's hands grip the hem of her blouse, shoulders shaking slightly from all the emotion she is holding back. "If I hadn't acted, he would've died right there on that field. Yes, I knew I might be hurting him in the process, but doing nothing would have guaranteed his death. I couldn't let that happen."

Agahnim turns back toward her as if she had insulted him. With a dismissive look, he lifts his chin and tilts his head. "Mipha," he speaks softly now. "You are not the one on trial, so there is no need to defend your actions. Whether or not you worsened Link's condition doesn't change the fact that Karusa is the one who is facing charges. Not you. What matters—the reason why we are here—is that my client was not responsible for the extent of Link's condition."

Link's POV

The court takes a small five-minute break. I want to check on Mipha but she disappears into the restrooms before I can get to her.

"I got this," Impa says to me, marching into the lady's room. The hallway falls quiet. It's just me and Kiroh now.

At first, nobody says anything. But after a minute, he turns to face me, leaning against the marble wall next to us.

"How you holding up?" he asks me.

I shrug.

He nods. "I bet all of this can be pretty tough." He places a cig between his teeth but doesn't light it. "Mipha will be okay. Impa's good at comforting people."

He looks nervous. I can't tell why, it just feels like it. Like he's on edge or something. When the door opens again and Impa walks out with Mipha behind her, Kiroh slides the cig back into his pocket.

"Mipha's gonna head home," Impa tells us. "It's been a long day."

Kiroh and I both nod. "That's fine," I say, trying not to stare at her puffy eyes. "Thank you so much for being here today and for... you know, talking about everything that happened that day."

She smiles at me. "Of course."

"That was really brave," I add. "I mean that."

"Thank you, Link."

I nod again, not sure what else to do. Then we watch her leave. I bet she feels a bit guilty for leaving early, but I'm actually really glad that she is prioritizing her mental health. I wouldn't want her to stay in the same room as Karusa anyways.

Break is over and we head back into the courtroom for Impa's witness statement. I would be worried about her if she was any other person, but I know she's got this. If anyone should be scared, it should be Agahnim.

"Ms. Tsutaeru, please take the stand," the bailiff says.

Impa walks up with her eyes fixed on Karusa. He glares back without flinching. It's a war without words and weapons. Just a tangible amount of hate and threat that's getting exchanged by looks.

She swears to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, then she states her full name and occupation for the court.

"I'm Impa Tsutaeru. I'm a student at Hyrule University, studying law."

Kirby walks up to the stands, giving her a subtle nod. "Ms. Tsutaeru, can you tell us about your relationship with Link Miyamoto and the nature of your involvement with him during the incident in question?"

"Link and I are close friends," Impa tells the court, sounding proud of it. "He's a good person who's had our backs ever since we met him. Me and my friends that is. Karusa on the other hand has a history of provoking and harassing my friends."

Agahnim objects, "Non-responsive."

"Sustained," the judge nods. "Ms. Tsutaeru's last statement will be stricken from the record. Please answer the question as asked."

"Did I not?" She tries to argue with Karusa's lawyer, but Kirby shakes his head at her. She narrows her eyes and leans back. "Sorry."

Kirby continues to question her. "Ms. Tsutaeru, can you describe the nature of the events leading up to the altercation between Link Miyamoto and Karusa Valley on the day in question?"

"There was a lot of tension," Impa says. "Karusa was taunting Link, saying really nasty things, and trying to provoke him."

"Objection, Your Honor," Mr. Agahnim interrupts again. This guy can't wait five minutes. "Ms. Tsutaeru is speculating on conversations she could not have possibly heard from the stands."

Kirby turns towards the judge. "Your Honor, the witness is providing context based on her observations of the defendants' behavior and Link's reactions. She is also sharing with us what Link has told her."

"So now we should consider the words of a man with memory loss?" Agahnim asks.

The judge raises a hand. "Overruled. Ms. Tsutaeru, please limit your testimony to what you directly witnessed."

"I was there!" she snaps. "I saw what happened! Karusa spoke to Link, and Link did his best to ignore it."

Karusa's attorney raises an ugly thin brow. "Clearly, Ms. Tsutaeru, Link's best efforts to ignore the provocation were insufficient, considering the result was a violent altercation that led to the hospitalization of other students."

"Objection," Kirby says, "No other students were hospitalized other than Link!"

"Withdrawn," Agahnim decides before the judge can, but he is not done yet. "Let me rephrase: if these were Link's best efforts, wouldn't you agree that perhaps the school erred in revoking Link's expulsion."

"No," Impa starts but Agahnim interrupts her.

"A man who demonstrates an inability to control his aggressive behavior should be deemed unfit for continued presence on campus. Do you disagree?"

Impa's expression turns dark with annoyance. "Link only acted because Karusa left him no choice! You want to talk about hospitalizations? What about the broken leg Karusa gave him? Or the way he and his friends gang up on anyone who stands up to them? Link stood up for us when no one else would. He's not the one ruining Hyrule's reputation—Karusa and his friends are."

"Calm down, Ms. Tsutaeru," the judge advises and she has no choice but to obey... She's angry, and I get it, we all are, but she needs to keep it together in front of the judge.

Karusa looks over his shoulder, his eyes sweeping over the audience until they land on us. Thankfully Mipha isn't here anymore. Wouldn't want that bastard to do as much as look at her. Karusa's eyes stick to Kiroh for a second, then he turns back to the front and whispers something to his attorney. Agahnim quickly gets to his feet.

"Impa," he exclaims, "you say Karusa and his friends are the ones that ruin Hyrule's reputation... Then how do you justify your decision to engage in an intimate relationship with one of Karusa's friends?"

"Your Honor, I must object," Kirby says, not allowing Impa to reply to Agahnim. "This is not the appropriate time for cross-examination. Agahnim's line of questioning is not only premature but also irrelevant."

The judge raises an eyebrow, looking at both attorneys. She looks exhausted and annoyed by both of them. "Mr. Kirby is right, it is currently the prosecution's turn to question the witness. Save your questions for cross-examination."

Agahnim looks flustered but nods at the judge. "Understood, Your Honor."

The judge turns to Kirby. "You may continue with your questioning."

"Ms. Tsutaeru," Kirby tries to continue in a collected tone. "Has Link ever expressed regret or concern about the altercations he's been involved in?"

She takes a moment to focus back on Kirby, but there is fire behind her eyes and her answer comes out strong. "Yes, absolutely. Link felt terrible afterward, blaming himself for everything. He hates getting into fights and is always worried about the consequences, not just for himself but for everyone involved. He even met with Hyrule's president one on one to formally apologize for the trouble he caused."

That was a scary day. I knew if I wanted his blessing, I'd have to man up and show him I'm serious and determined. Can't believe he's really gone... I never even got the chance to ask him for his daughter's hand. I can only hope he's okay with her choice. If I could talk to him one last time, I'd tell him that I'll do my best to take care of her and treat her the way she deserves.

"In your opinion," Kirby continues, "do you believe that Link's actions that day were out of character for him, had it not been for Karusa Valley's provocations?"

"Yes, I do. Link wouldn't have reacted the way he did if Karusa hadn't assaulted his..." She notices how my eyes go wide, and stops herself from saying 'girlfriend'. "If he hadn't assaulted his friend," she corrects herself.

"And how did Mr. Valley's behavior impact the general atmosphere and safety perception among students at Hyrule University?"

Impa doesn't hesitate. "Students are genuinely scared of Karusa! When he shows up, people leave. Some students don't even go to any of our home games against Lorule anymore because they think they might get hurt. For example, next week Hyrule's soccer team will play against Lorule, and even though Karusa isn't even part of that team, some of my friends said they won't attend because of what happened at the baseball game."

"Thank you, Ms. Tsutaeru. Your testimony helps to provide context for Link Miyamoto's actions, showing that his behavior was a response to prolonged and severe provocation."

Karusa's attorney stands up and takes his turn to question Impa now. I already know it's gonna be intense, but Impa looks fearless up there.

"Ms. Tsutaeru," Agahnim says, "you claim that my client has a history of harassment. Could you please provide specific examples of such behavior?"

"He has sexually assaulted one of my girl friends, and physically assaulted Link at least three t—"

"Please provide the names of the people in question," Karusa's lawyer interrupts her.

She gives him a confused look that speaks volumes. I can just hear her mind saying, Did that jerk really just cut me off?

"The names, Ms. Tsutaeru." He waits with an expecting look on his old face. "Of the girl you say Karusa harassed."

"The girl," Impa snarls, "wants to remain anonymous."

The attorney nods satisfied, as if he knew that already. "And let's be clear, you've been friends with Link Miyamoto for how long?"

"About a year and a half," she replies, not hiding her temper. "But we've known each other for much longer than that. He saved me from a dog attack the first time we met. He didn't even know me but he jumped in front of me as if my life was worth more than his..."

"And during this time, has Link been involved in any other altercations or fights?"

"Yes," she admits after a short pause.

"I see. So there have been other instances where Miyamoto was involved in fights. Doesn't that suggest a pattern of aggressive behavior on his part?"

Screw off...

I lean back in my seat, arms crossed casually. Kiroh notices and looks at me for a sec to check on me. I look back towards the front.

"Link was provoked in those situations by Karusa and Ganon," Impa says.

"So just to be clear, the only fights Link has ever been involved in were with Karusa and Ganon? No other people? Any of his friends, for instance?"

I wonder how much he knows. No way he knows me and Ravioli got into a fight on Christmas Eve, right? Or that I shoved Russ on the mountain. I try to remember if anyone took a video that day, but it's been a year and I barely remember that trip as it is.

"He's not a violent person," Impa tries dodging the questions, but Agahnim won't let her.

"Please answer. Has Link ever gotten into fights with anyone other than Karusa and Ganon?"

"No," she lies on my behalf. I hope this won't come back to bite her.

"You seem quite certain," Karusa's guy says. "But Mr. Miyamoto has been involved in fights long before your friendship began, hasn't he?"

Is he referring to that bully back in Japan who attacked Mipha with a knife? It'd be actually kind of impressive if Agahnim somehow dug that up.

"So?" Impa asks the lawyer back with some attitude. "Doesn't change the fact that Link stands up for his friends. He would never hurt an innocent person."

The attorney chuckles. "Is that so?" He then turns back toward the judge. "Your Honor, I'd like to present video footage that offers a different perspective."

"Proceed," the judge gestures toward the TV screen.

The footage shows the baseball brawl in glaring detail. It's me lashing out, not just at Karusa who's already passed out and covered in blood, but also at a security guard. There's a moment where I come dangerously close to hitting Zelda in a fit of uncontrolled rage.

Damn... Seeing myself like that... I don't know what to feel. I can't look at it without feeling disgust and hate towards myself. I'd like to think I'm not that person anymore, but then again, when I look at Karusa's bloody face, I still feel that sense of satisfaction.

My fingers brush over the knuckles of my left hand. No open wounds, but scares of old fights mark the back of my hand. I will control myself, for the sake of my friends. And for the sake of my promise to Zelda. No more fighting. If I can keep that promise, then maybe I can keep the promise I would've made to her father.

The lawyer plays the clip again and pauses when Zelda is on the screen. "Impa, could you please identify this person?"

"That's Zelda."

"Zelda Hyrule, correct?"

"Yes."

"Could you share with the court her relationship to Mr. Miyamoto?" the attorney asks.

"Zelda is Link's girlfriend."

"His girlfriend," Agahnim repeats for emphasis. "And here Mr. Miyamoto is an inch away from striking her! Ms. Tsutaeru, to your knowledge, has Mr. Miyamoto ever physically harmed Miss Hyrule?"

"No, of course not."

Karusa's attorney presents another piece of evidence. A photo of Zelda with cuts on her legs and cheek. She looks unaware that these pictures were taken. As if some guy in the bushes waited for her to walk to her class so he could snap some pics! Like a pervert!

"These are recent photographs of Zelda. How did she receive these injuries?"

The judge leans froward. She's intrigued, closely looking at the photos of Zelda, then she looks at me. I freeze. No way the judge seriously thinks I did that to Zelda, right?

"I don't know," Impa says. "How'd you get these photos? Did she consent to it?"

That's what I want to know too!

"This was in August," the lawyer answers a question that nobody asked. "Is it true that Link Miyamoto was staying at the Hyrule's home during this time?"

"I'm not sure. Who took these pics?" Impa asks again, but I already know the Boar's attorney won't answer her question.

"So it is possible that Mr. Miyamoto caused these injuries."

"No," Impa shakes her head, but he cuts her off again.

"Because at the same time, Mr. Miyamoto got into another fight with my client. He lured him to a remote location, using Miss Hyrule's Instagram account to message Karusa, asking him to meet. He then violently broke my client's knee and threatened to take his life."

"Objection! Where is the evidence to support such accusations?" Kirby jumps in.

"I have the chat history," says Agahnim. "As well as the medical records."

Not proud of that one. But once again happy that Mipha is not here to find out about that.

Impa leans forward, muscles tense. "Can we talk about why Karusa would agree to meet Zelda alone at a 'remote place'?"

Good question, Impa! Did she learn that at law school? Kirby barely has to step in because she's got the reins in her own hands.

"Ms. Tsutaeru," Karusa's attorney continues, losing patience, "can you still maintain that Mr. Miyamoto was entirely justified in his actions?"

It's as if nothing Impa says matters unless it's exactly what Agahnim wants to hear. Just wait until she's a judge... She won't let stuff like this slide.

"Link's reaction was a result of intense provocation," Impa says for the millionth time.

"Please answer the question."

"I am. Maybe try listening. Link was pushed to his limits, but that doesn't change the fact that Karusa has a history of starting problems!"

"But earlier you testified that Link 'blamed himself for everything' and that he felt the need to apologize for 'the trouble he caused.' If he were truly innocent, why would he feel the need to apologize? Doesn't this suggest a recognition of guilt and responsibility on his part?"

"What? No!"

"Link knew he was in the wrong."

"No, Link always takes on the burden of responsibility, even when he's not at fault. He felt remorse because he cares about the impact it had on others. His biggest regret is probably not being able to protect everyone from the real monsters." She deliberately gestures at Karusa, but the attorney only tilts his head, as if her answer confused him.

"So you're saying that despite Link's violent behavior, we should view him as a hero because he felt bad afterward?"

Impa glares at him. "I'm saying that Link isn't the villain."

The attorney turns back to the judge. "Your Honor, the witness's testimony is clearly biased, painting Mr. Miyamoto as a martyr while ignoring his repeated violent actions. This should be taken into account when evaluating her credibility and the validity of her statements."

"Objection, Your Honor," Kirby comes to the rescue. "The defense is attempting to discredit the witness based on emotional appeal rather than factual evidence."

"Sustained."

Finally the judge is on our side. The lady in black nods for the defense attorney to respond. Agahnim follows the judge's directions and walks up to Impa, probably trying to intimidate her but failing once again.

"Ms. Tsutaeru, let's talk about your own record for a moment," Agahnim starts.

"Objection, relevance?" Kirby questions.

"It is relevant, Your Honor, as it pertains directly to her credibility as a witness," the defense attorney asserts.

"Overruled. You may continue, counsel."

The attorney thanks the judge and continues to question Impa. I can just picture dark purple clouds around the guy. "I hear you are a mixed martial arts fighter, correct?"

Impa looks wary, but she answers with, "Yes."

"And you are quite good at it, wouldn't you say?"

"I'm alright," she shrugs.

"Let's not be humble. In your senior year of high school you won the nationals, securing yourself a substantial scholarship to Hyrule University, where, a year later, you qualified for the state championships. I believe it's safe to say that you are excellent at the sport. A sport that, while legal, certainly underscores a propensity for violence."

She glares at him. "MMA is a disciplined sport. It's not about violence."

"Discipline or not, it's a clear indication of your comfort with physical confrontation. Let me ask you a question—"

"How does this matter?" She cuts him off. He doesn't seem fazed at all.

"Impa, are athletes permitted to consume alcohol at Hyrule University?" he asks instead of answering her question.

"No."

"But surely you participate in underage drinking."

She looks at Kirby for silent advice. He nods at her and she answers truthfully. "Yes."

"And you've been arrested before, haven't you?"

"No. I've received a warning once or twice, but I haven't been—"

"You haven't been arrested for arson?"

She pauses mid-sentence, her jaw frozen in a moment of shock. Neither of us expected Agahnim to bring up this crap from a year ago...

"I didn't set the football field on fire. It wasn't me."

The attorney raises both eyebrows. "But... You pled guilty."

"No, that's not true!"

"You didn't plead guilty?"

"I did, but not to arson!"

The attorney remains calm. "Then what did you plead guilty for?" He waits, but Impa doesn't answer. "Underage drinking and the possession of an illegal weapon, isn't that right?"

"Yes," she mumbles.

"So you DID get arrested for drinking."

"No, I got arrested for the fire, which I got framed for! It was probably Karusa or one of his friends!"

"So you lied to the court?"

Give her a break, man! Let her think about her answers! Don't corner her like that... If this goes on for much longer, Impa will lose her cool just like Mipha. It's just too much all at once.

"Your Honor," Kirby stands, "Impa took the plea deal that day, I don't see how that relates to this case."

Karusa's attorney clicks his tongue and pretends to think about the facts. Then he slowly walks to the center and speaks like a damn preacher. "Ms. Tsutaeru is studying law and understands the paramount importance of truth in these proceedings. Or at least she should. How can we trust the word of someone who admits to lying in court?" The guy speaks to the judge directly as if it'll give him sympathy points. "Your Honor, this witness has a history of dishonesty and violent behavior. She's an MMA fighter who's been arrested for underage drinking and carrying weapons, and, as she just admitted, pled guilty to those crimes. This pattern of behavior not only casts doubt on her reliability, but clearly indicates that it's Hyrule's very own students that tarnished the reputation of its institution."

"I didn't start that fire! I was framed! And do you have any idea how many kids drink in college?"

"No further questions, Your Honor."

"Also, I didn't use the nunchaku on anyone! It's just for practice!" The attorney turns his back to Impa, walking away. "Why aren't we talking about the fact that Karusa is a sociopath with zero regrets for his actions?"

Karusa seems bothered by those words. It catches my attention and makes me wonder which part bugs him—that he's a sociopath or that he feels no regret. When he notices my eyes on him, he quickly hides whatever was bothering him with a fake smile.

Impa goes on, "Let's also talk about the fact that Karusa had to face no consequences for what he did to Link!"

"Order," the judge says to her. "Mr. Kirby, do you have a response before we proceed?"

Kirby tells the judge: "The witness's past is irrelevant to her testimony about the incident in question."

"Alright." The judge thinks it over but it doesn't take long for a decision. "The court acknowledges the defense's point regarding the witness's past, but it will also consider the context provided by the prosecution."
