Chapter 2

Madalyn

After saying goodbye to Katie, I go to the detention room. There are only a few kids there whom I obviously don't know and a teacher who is busy typing something on her phone.

I go in and sit down in a corner near the window to enjoy the beautiful view outside. I plug in my earphones and start listening to some songs to relax.

I know it's not allowed but who cares, right?

I start humming along the lines of the song "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi.

Now the day bleeds, Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug

That's when I hear someone scoff behind me. I look up and see Dylan standing there. I unplug my earphones and turn around to face him.

"What happened?" I ask confused.

"What?" he asks me back raising an eyebrow at me.

"Why did you react like that?" I ask again more specifically.

"Nothing. You won't understand," he says looking everywhere but me.

"Fine. Be like that. Push people away. Don't show your real side. Lie to others, lie to yourself." I say a bit angry as he doesn't answer the question.

What? It's not my fault. I don't like people ignoring me.

"You don't even know what it is like to be hurt. So stop acting like you know what I am going through." He snaps at me, clearly pissed off.

Shit! I pissed him off.

His jaw clenches and he clutches his arms. His eyes turn to a darker shade of blue. His eyes held an emotion in them but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Was it pain? Or was it sorrow?

Before I could identify what it was he quickly masks it by his signature smirk.

He looks at me in the eye and says,"Sometimes it's better to stay a mystery."

I don't say anything instead just turn around and look out of the window. He holds my chin and forces me to look back at him.

"Forget what I said before. I wasn't thinking straight. It's just that you won't understand what I'm going through." he says calmly.

"Why do you think I won't understand. I know what it is like to be hurt. I understand. I wasn't an easy-going person either because of ...," I trail off. Remembering the past was just too scary. Even thinking about it sent shivers down my spine.

Dylan noticed my discomfort and decided to let it go.

"But you have to get over it. I also went through a lot but then Cole helped me get through it." I say again after a few minutes.

"At least you have someone, " he mutters.

He opens his mouth to say something but closes it back as the door slams open and the teacher enters the class. I was so busy talking to him I hadn't even noticed the teacher was not in the class.

"Detention is over. You all may go." She announces.

Dylan hangs his bag over his shoulder and leaves the room. I do the same and go straight to the parking lot but, that's when I remember that I had driven to school with Katie today.

Ohh shit! It seems I have to walk all the way home.

It's not a long walk, just 20 minutes from school. I like walking. It gives me time to think about my life without anyone interrupting my thoughts.

I start thinking about my little conversation with Dylan in detention today. I just saw a different side of him today. There was something he is hiding, that's for sure. Students from our school say he's dangerous. He just has a few friends apart from Brian and Jace. But I didn't find him dangerous today. I mean at least he didn't scare me. Maybe he's not that bad after all.

My thoughts are interrupted by a car honking behind me. I turn around and see Dylan in the car. He halts the car beside me and rolls down the window.

"Want a lift?" He asks.

"Yes, please" is what I wanted to say but I decided against it. My feet are already killing me even though I had just walked just for 10 minutes.

"No, it's okay. I prefer to walk and besides it's just a 10 minutes walk from here" I say smiling politely at him.

"Oh come on. Get in already." He says.

I hesitate for a moment but get in finally.

There is silence in the car until he speaks again, "Soooo....who is Cole ?"

"Huh?" I ask, confused.

Where did Cole come from suddenly?

"Who is Cole?" He asks again.

"My best friend," I reply to which he only nods his head.

Cole and I have been friends since freshman year. Our parents are business partners and when they shifted to New York in our neighborhood a few years back, Cole and I became friends. I was really weak and timid back then. He was really easy to get along with. He helped me get through everything I was going through and soon we became best of friends. But unfortunately, his family shifted again last year to Ohio so he transferred schools again. We called each other frequently. But I haven't talked to him for a few weeks now. I'll call him today after I get home.

The rest of the ride is silent except for me telling him the directions to my house. He was too quiet. God knows what happened to him after detention. He was okay in detention.

"Thank you for the ride, " I say quickly when we enter the driveway of my house.

I open the door to get out when he suddenly grabs my wrist and turns me around to face him.

"Won't I get a goodbye kiss?" He smirks. Yes, that's the Dylan I know. I narrow my eyes and glare at him playfully.

"Okay! Okay! A hug at least?" He asks again, trying to hide his smile.

"In your wildest dreams, Scott," I say chuckling and leave the car, slamming the door shut behind me. I hear him laugh loudly at my reaction.

I remove the house keys from my bag and open the door. There was no one at home as my parents usually came home late at night. I met them only at breakfast in the morning or sometimes not even at breakfast.

I go straight to my room and call Cole but he doesn't answer. Maybe he is busy. I complete my home assignments, which was a lot of writing work, and watch some Netflix.

After a few hours, my stomach grumbles and I order pizza.

Yeah, if you haven't guessed it yet, I CAN'T COOK.

I never really liked cooking. Once when I tried, I almost burnt the kitchen and since then my mom has never actually let me cook.

A few minutes later the bell rings. I rush to open the door knowing that the pizza has arrived.

After finishing the pizza. I see if I have any new notification on my phone. And the was a text from Cole.

Cole: Hey! I'm sorry, I couldn't answer your call. I was busy.

Me: Oh it's okay. It was nothing important. We hadn't talked for a few weeks so I decided to call.

Cole: Actually, I'm still busy. I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Me: Promise?

Cole: Promise.

What must he be doing?

I started thinking until I fall asleep.
