Chapter 7- Margaret
I took a deep breath and released it with a small whoosh. My whole body relaxed instantly, and I felt relieved to find this place, even though it was for one night.
Thank God that Dono is well behaved, I thought while I shook my head and pursed my lips in annoyance. Who knows where I would be if he wasn't.
My horses whickered when I entered the trailer, and I bit back a tired smile, my heart growing warm and filled with love and compassion for them.
"Hi, guys," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Are you all ready to get out?"
Gallant snorted and tossed his head as far as he could because he was still hooked up to the trailer and couldn't move his head that far. He kicked the side of the trailer, and it shook with each bang, bang, bang.
I rolled my eyes and scowled, amused. "Very funny, Gal," I said while I walked over to him and rubbed his nose, calling him by one of his many nicknames. "You need to behave yourself, Stupid, and that means stop kicking the trailer."
My horse snorted again and bobbed his head but stopped kicking the trailer. He nuzzled my side and whickered, and I could tell that he was ready to get out and see where I brought him.
"Haha, very funny, Gal," I teased and rolled my eyes before I walked over to the area where I had his lead rope hanging with the others. "You still know better than to act like an ass."
My horse whickered and nodded before he pulled at the clip while the others stayed put and watched him from the corner of their eyes.
I shook my head and bit back an annoyed sigh before I grabbed the lead rope and walked over to him. "Why can't you be like the others, Gal?" I teased. "Why do you have to be such a pain?"
"Because you are one, Mags," my brother said from outside the trailer. "Animals are like their human counterparts. Isn't that right, Dono?"
Dono whined, and I had a feeling that he didn't move from his spot because of the other children around him.
"Is he behaving himself?" I asked while I clipped on the leadrope and took off the bungee cord that held him to the trailer.
"Yes, Ma'am," they chorused.
"Good," I said before I clicked my tongue and started to back him out of the trailer. "Make sure that he keeps behaving himself. Understood?"
"Yes, Ma'am," they said.
Gallant snorted and bobbed his head when he was finally out of the trailer. He breathed in and out before he snorted and bobbed his head again, looking around.
He whinnied out in greeting and bobbed his head a third time before he half reared and tucked his head closer to his chest, shaking his head, and I grabbed the lead rope tighter.
"Easy, Gal," I softly scolded while he half reared again when the others in the trailer started to whinny and move around the trailer. "Would you behave yourself?"
Gallant snorted and shook his head while he looked around, looking at everyone and everything.
"He sure is a beaut," Blake said while he stared at my horse. He cleared his throat and looked at me, looking very nervous and unsure about himself and the horse. "Are you sure that he won't be difficult to handle?"
"Oh, he will be," I said and nodded in confirmation, "but he won't do anything to you just yet." I smirked and winked while I walked over to his brother so that Bryson could hold him.
"Hmph," Blake said.
Bryson took the leadrope when I handed it to him and looked at my horse before he looked at me, looking very uncomfortable and nervous about holding him.
"Maybell, can you help with Gallant, please?" I asked and looked at her.
"Yes," May said and walked over to us. "Gally," she said, and he whickered and bobbed his head in greeting. "Hiya, Gally. Are you going to behave?"
Gallant snorted and shook his head, and I bit back a small chuckle.
"Behave, Gallant," I said and narrowed my eyes while I scowled. "There is no need to act like a butt."
Gallant turned to look at me with wide eyes as if to say, "Who me?" His ears were pricked toward me, but he didn't move toward me like I thought he would.
However, I knew that wasn't going to last and that he was going to "behave" for now until he was comfortable.
"Behave, Gallant," I said again while I scowled and narrowed my eyes further. "If not, then I will not give you any treats for a whole year. Is that understood?"
Blake bit back a small snort, and my horse nodded, giving me a wide eyed look that I knew all too well. "Does that even work?" he asked while he raised an eyebrow in question, and I nodded in confirmation.
"It does," I said while I looked at him before I looked at Bryson and offered him a tight smile. "He'll behave, now."
Bryson hesitated before he slowly nodded, still looking unsure. "If you say so..." he said while he gave my horse another sideways glance, and his brother grinned while he looked at him before he looked at me.
I chuckled, amused and shook my head. I didn't say a word while I gave my daughter a pointed look, and she rolled her eyes and scowled.
"I know, Mommy," she said with so much sass that it almost reminded me of my sister. "I will keep an eye on them both while Travis watches over Dono and the kids."
"Us both?" Bryson asked, shocked and impressed about this little girl that I called my daughter. His eyes grew wide while he stared at her, and my daughter looked at him with an innocent look on her face. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"It me-"
"Maybell," I warned, knowing full well where that sentence was going to go, and I did not want it to be said out loud. I scowled and narrowed my eyes while she looked at me with an innocent look on her face.
"Yes, Ma'am?" she asked innocently, giving me a look that I had seen too many times on my animals' faces that I had to wonder if they learned it because of her or if it was the other way around.
I pressed my lips into a thin line and narrowed my eyes while I tried to make sure that I didn't laugh or show that I was amused. "Be nice, Maybell," I warned and narrowed my eyes further while she looked at me.
Maybell grinned innocently and didn't say a word, her eyes bright and filled with fake innocence that she possessed. She looked at Gallant before she looked at the trailer where I knew that the other horses were waiting for me to get them out of the trailer before she looked at me again.
I didn't say a word and blinked, biting back a small sigh before I started to pray that she wouldn't be the cause of us having to move again with that mouth of hers.
"Don't worry, I will watch over all of them," Blake said, cheerfully while he winked teasingly at his brother before he looked at me. "Go ahead and get the other horses out of your trailer as well as your dogs, Margaret."
"And the cat," May said cheerfully, and I held back an eye roll while I pressed my lips into a thin line. She looked at Bryson and narrowed her eyes, scowling. "Will your dogs attack my cat, Mister?" she asked.
"Maybell," I softly scolded when Bryson's eyes grew wide at the hostility of this young child, and Leslie chuckled amused from where she was watching the other kids and Dono.
My daughter stopped what she was doing and looked at me with wide, innocent eyes. She didn't say a word while she looked at me innocently, and I held back an eye roll but scowled.
She cleared her throat and raised an eyebrow in question, keeping her innocent look on her face. "Yes?" she asked, sweetly. "What can I do for you, Mama?"
"Stop," I scolded and narrowed my eyes while I scowled.
"Bu-"
"No," I said, interrupting her while I shook my head. "Stop."
My daughter rolled her eyes and scowled, but she didn't say a word.
"Are you going to hold onto Sprite when I get her out?" I asked and tried to raise an eyebrow in question but both of my eyebrows went up.
"Yes," she confirmed and nodded. "I don't want to hold onto Admiral, though."
I rolled my eyes and started to make my way back to my trailer, where my other horses stood, before I looked at them again. "You don't have to hold onto him if you hang onto Speite. I told you this already. Admiral will follow Sprite anywhere, and if you have control of Sprite, then you will have control of Admiral."
My daughter sighed and shook her head. She didn't say another word, and I shook my head, unamused.
"Just hang onto Sprite?" I asked and tried to raise an eyebrow in question, but both of them went up again, and Maybell smiled innocently. "Please?"
"Fine," she grumbled before she nodded. "Just know that I don't like it, Mama."
I shook my head. "You have a strong man beside you that will help if need be," I said and gestured to Blake, and Blake grinned innocently and waved when Maybell looked at him.
She shrugged and looked at me again. She didn't say a word and pressed her lips into a thin line.
I bit back an annoyed sigh and shook my head, again. "Just behave while I get them, Maybell, please? They can help with the horses while I get the last one out, even though Bryson has and will have his hands full with Gallant." I gestured to Bryson, who was watching us with a nervous look on his face, especially since he had heard some stories about my gelding.
Maybell bit back a small snort before she rolled her eyes. "Fine," she said and gestured to the trailer. "Go ahead and go get Admiral and Sprite out of the trailer, Mama. Do you think that the dogs are ready to come out?" She raised an eyebrow in question.
I bit back a small laugh and nodded in confirmation. "Yes, I am sure," I said. "However, let's get the horses out first and put them in a paddock before we get them out... if that is ok with you." I looked at Bryson again, biting back a hesitant smile.
Bryson pressed his lips into a thin line and nodded in confirmation. "It is," he confirmed. "We can show you where to put them after you are done getting them out."
I bit back a sigh of relief and relaxed, my shoulders sagging in relief. "Ok," I said. "Thank you."
And with that, I bowed my head a little before I walked the rest of the way to my trailer, praying to God that I wouldn't have to find another place to live.
They'll be safe here...
...I hope.
