8: I
"Okay my youthful students! The Hokage has given us multiple tasks to complete! Who's ready to get started? Is that even a question though- I know my young grasshoppers are ready to brawl!" yells Guy-Sensei with excitement.
"Oh yeah! I'm ready to fight Guy-Sensei!" screams Rock Lee as he flashes a smile.
"But wait Sensei, I thought we were going to do some taijutsu training, but with weapons and other types of jutsus," you say.
"Well, The Hokage decided to give us these missions earlier than expected. Anyways, I'm going to split you four in groups," begins Guy-Sensei. "Whoever completes their tasks first get to leave ten minutes early for tomorrow's training."
"Ten minutes!" yells Tenten with shock.
"You're right Tenten! I'll make it five!" says Guy-Sensei as he smiles and gives a thumbs up.
Tenten pinches the brim of her nose and shakes her head in disappointment.
"I hope Tenten and I are partnered up," you think to yourself.
"Well, Neji and (y/n), you two will be partners while Tenten and Rock Lee are partners," says Guy-Sensei as he hands sheets of paper to each group.
You had cursed under your breath when Guy-Sensei announced that you and Neji were partners. You felt that Guy-Sensei was doing this on purpose, so that you and Neji could possibly make up. After being handed five sheets of paper, you noticed that there was a task front and back. Not realizing that Neji was looking over your shoulder, you turn quickly to show him the papers, but instead you end up being face to face with him. You felt your cheeks become warm at the closeness of Neji's face. Everything was still. It was as if the universe had stopped to let this moment happen. You back away as soon as you snap back into reality.
"Let's work as fast as we can Neji," you mumble as you and Neji begin to run in the direction of Ichiraku's Ramen Shop, not noticing the fangirl and fanboys staring.
"Heh, they're totally gonna start dating one day," grins Tenten.
"Yeah, even if it takes a million years!" yells Rock Lee.
"The two would make a decent couple- I mean, scurry off you two! You don't want Neji and (y/n) to receive the reward!" yells Guy-Sensei.
"Yeah yeah Guy-Sensei," mumbles Tenten as she and Rock Lee begin to run in the opposite direction of Neji and (y/n).
. . .
You analyze the first page and say, "Okay, so Ichiraku Ramen Shop needs us to help wash dishes due to the owner's daughter being sick."
"Oh, that should be easy!" exclaims Neji. "We should have it done in no time!"
When you and Neji arrive to Ichiraku Ramen Shop, you notice a certain blonde eating away with his sensei.
"Uh-oh," you mumble.
Neji asks what's wrong and you explain to him that the certain blonde is an academy student named Naruto that's your new friend and that he has a huge appetite.
"Tch, no worries at all (y/n)! Like I said, we'll be done in no time!" exclaims Neji.
You find Neji's optimistic behavior abnormal, but let it slide for now since you two had a job to do. You and Neji enter Ichiraku Ramen Shop through the back and are given towers of bowls to wash from the owner, who introduced himself as Teuchi. You and Neji carefully wash the greasy bowls thoroughly. An hour passes and a quarter of the bowls are only washed. Naruto eventually left, but ended up making a new tower. You step back from the sink and look at your wrinkled hands. You touch your face with your hands and enjoy the coldness from them. Half a minute passes after you stop feeling your face and you take a deep breath, ending it with a loud sigh.
"Do you think we should split up?" questions Neji.
"No Neji," you reply shaking your head. "The idea of this mission is to work on our teamwork. Guy-Sensei put us on a team for a reason."
Taken aback by your response, Neji finally replies with, "I understand."
"Stand back Neji, as much as I love being patient, we need to finish this up now," you state.
"What are you doing (y/n)? What if you break some dishes?" questions Neji.
"They say that patience is the best remedy for every trouble; however, even the nicest person's patience has a limit," you answer as you turn the sink on full blast.
Afraid of what you might do, Neji stands back, yet he prepares himself when he must dive for bowls. You lift both your arms and aim them at the sink. You glare at the water, making it seem like you and the water were having a staring contest. Then, all of a sudden, the water begins to float in the air. It seems as if water could defy gravity; however, the thought is only apart of a fantasy.
"Neji, I want you to squirt soap in the water to make it soapy," you say. (A/N: Yes, I did purposely use the word squirt. :3)
Neji agrees to follow your instruction as he walks over to the sink to get the bottle of soap. Once he gets a hold of the bottle of soap, he squeezes the bottle, squirting the white fluid into your floating bubble of water. (A/N: I'm sorry, but I had to.) You carefully move your arms in the direction of the bowl towers. The water follows your movements, leading to the many bowls to be submerged in water.
"I need more water Neji, but I'm afraid that if I move one hand, then the floating bubble of water will dissipate. Could you use a clean bowl to fill up with water and pour it into my bubble?" you ask.
"Sure," agrees Neji as he grabs a clean bowl and fills it up with water from the running sink.
Neji pours water into your floating bubble of water three times after the first, causing your floating bubble of water to expand. As soon as the water was big enough, you bring your hands in a little, not letting them touch, to make the shape of a sphere. This movement causes water to shift the bowls in better places. You make your forefinger from your dominant hand move in a rotating motion, causing the water to make the bowls spin and glide with the water. You were careful enough to not sling any bowls around; although, Neji did have to catch a few when they happen to sink, but it was no big deal according to Neji. Within twenty minutes after wasting an hour on cleaning bowls, you two were finished with the first task out of ten.
You had Teuchi initial the box next to the task you two completed for him. Of course Teuchi thanked you and Neji and you both replied with you're welcome. Teuchi asked if you two wanted some ramen on the house at the moment, but you insisted that you and Neji would come back later in the day to collect your treats from him.
"I don't know if we're going to finish all these tasks before Tenten and Rock Lee," you state as you look at the next task.
"Come on (y/n)! I think we can win since you're a creative thinker," says Neji.
You find the compliment that he threw at you abnormal for Neji, since he was always rude towards you at the academy, but decide to let it slide for now.
"We have to go to the Hokage's office and help him file a few pages," you state as you shove the pieces of paper into your back pocket.
You and Neji make it to the Hokage's office and introduce yourselves. You learn that The Hokage's actual name is Hiruzen.
"So Hiruzen-can I call you that?" The Hokage nods as he grins. "Thank you, anyways, what needs to be filed sir?"
"Well, what if I told you two that no filing is needed, but the other tasks will not be completed?" asks Hiruzen.
"I'd laugh," you boldly say.
"I see," says The Hokage as he stands up to look out his window.
"Besides, we need to complete our mission first, Hokage," states Neji.
"Neji's correct, Hiruzen," you say as you pull out a kunai from your ninja pack, discreetly hiding it behind your back, feeling a strange presence.
"You both are intelligent genin, which makes me wonder if one or both of you two will become Hokage one day," says Hiruzen.
"So, what files need to be filed, sir?" you ask, gripping your kunai.
"Oh, you may start with the ones in the back," answers The Hokage.
"Thank you," you mumble.
As you turn, you see a kunai coming for your head in your peripheral vision. You quickly turn to hit the kunai away from your head with your own kunai.
"Get under me (y/n)!" demands Neji as you listen and slide beneath him.
"Eight trigrams, sixty-four palms. Two palms, four palms, eight palms, sixteen palms, thirty-two palms, sixty-four palms!" yells Neji as he hits multiple kunai and shuriken away.
"Well done, that'll be enough filing my dear young ones," smiles Hiruzen.
"Huh?" you mumble as you stand up.
Neji takes many breaths due to fatigue.
"I see you have mastered it Neji," notes Hiruzen as he sits in his chair.
"Not... Yet..." Neji takes a deep breath. "I still experience fatigue."
"Your parents would be proud Neji," states Hiruzen with a smile.
Neji frowns and says, "I'll wait outside."
Neji says good-bye to The Hokage and leaves the room to wait in the hallways of The Hokage's building. You hand Hiruzen the folded piece of paper for him to initial.
As Hiruzen initials his task's box, he asks, "So Miss (l/n), what do you inspire to be when you're older?"
"Well, I wanna be a great shinobi like my parents!" you exclaim.
"Anything else?" questions Hiruzen as he looks up to make eye contact with you.
"Well, I'd like to be myself and have a lot of friends too!"
"Well, I hope you accomplish everything," says Hiruzen as he hands you the sheet of paper back.
As you fold the sheet of paper once again, you say, "May I ask you a question, Hiruzen?"
Hiruzen straightens his back and nods as his eyes close.
Assuming that you have his full attention, you ask, "Is there something... Not right with me?"
Most would not tell, but you happen to notice Hiruzen when he froze for a bit.
"No, why do you ask?" blurts out Hiruzen quickly as you stuff the folded paper in your back pocket.
"I believe you know what I'm talking about sir," you say as your eyes narrow.
Hiruzen laughs, "Why don't you and Neji hurry up and complete those missions? You have eight more to go."
You sigh and begin to walk towards the door. You pause at the door with your hand on the handle.
"I really enjoyed that test with the kunai and shuriken, Hiruzen. It really makes me wonder, was that even supposed to be a test... and did you think Neji and I would split up, leading to me coming here alone?"
"Of course it was a test, why would I try to kill someone apart of the new generation?" questions Hiruzen.
"Ya know, maybe I'm paranoid or uneducated, but I thought that when you initialed something, you'd put the first letter of your first and last name, but I only saw one letter, Hiruzen. I didn't imagine The Hokage being lazy-"
"Well, I suppose I forgot due to being old," says Hiruzen.
"Or perhaps you don't even know your own last name due to poor research and not being The Hokage!" you yell as you turn to throw a wet kunai at Hiruzen's face.
At the last moment, you shift your dominant arm up, causing the wet kunai to shoot up into the ceiling. A young man dressed in clothing from head to toe dodges the kunai by falling out the ceiling.
"Who are you?" you ask as the wet kunai returns to you.
"I see that you figured out how to manipulate water, Miss (l/n)."
"Who. Are. You?" You ask once again.
"We'll be in touch (y/n). Don't worry, I won't harm you, although I can't promise that the others won't if you decide to not do what we want you to do."
"Answer my question!" You yell angrily.
The young male shatters a window with the help of his own kunai.
Before the young male jumps out the window, he says, "Call me I."
Hiruzen wakes up as soon as the young man disappears and questions what happened. Due to the noise of the windows shattering, many people came rushing into the Hokage's office. You and Neji are taken to another room and dismissed from any given missions due to being interrogated.
