Of Apples and Constellations
Virgil wakes when his hunger pangs had gotten to the point where his stomach feels like it was practically stabbing him.
He groans, awake but not fully coherent. All he wants to do is fall back to sleep but his body has different ideas.
"Here", the Lightbeam was handing him an apple.
"Thanks", he mumbled as he grabbed it and sat up against the tree. The dormant Reaper groaned. It felt as if the small movement of sitting up literally drained him. Gods he felt like he was going to pass out.
"Hey, are you ok?"
He opened his eyes to see a blurry image of the Lightbeam in front of him.
When did he close his eyes?
Virgil tried to nod but he barely managed that, his head felt so heavy and the motion caused everything to spin.
"Are you sure?" the Lightbeam came closer.
Gods the Reaper wanted to drown in the Other's warmth, but he forced himself not to move, it took too much energy anyway.
"...'m fine...jus' tired...", his tongue felt like lead, to make matters worse, his stomach growled loudly, enough to cause a minor cramp, "...'nd really, really hungry 'parently"
His eyes closed.
-----
Roman frowned, his Shadow looked so exhausted. But he knew the Other wouldn't be able to sleep, especially with his stomach growling that loudly. When was the last time he ate? He didn't even eat the apple.
Hearing the exhaustion in the Shadows voice made him wonder if he even could. Did the Blue Shadow, Logan if he remembered correctly, did he hurt his apparent apprentice?
Frowning he took back the apple and conjured a knife, cutting it into slices.
The Shadow stirred, eyes barely opened,"..'t're you doin'?..."
Roman took the apple slices and held them up to the prone Shadow. "Here, chew slowly, it should at least sate your stomach so you can go back to sleep"
His Shadow frowned, but then he sighed, accepting defeat and opening his mouth to accept the apple slice.
Slice after slice, the Shadow ate slowly, almost falling asleep at times.
When that happened, Roman would gently tap his cheek until his woke and ate the next slice.
He didn't even realize how close he was sitting to the Other until the Shadow's head fell on his shoulder. He blinked, as much as he wanted to let his Shadow rest; there was only one piece left.
"Hey, come on-"
The Shadow groaned.
"It's the last one, then you can sleep, I promise"
His Shadow groaned again but still took the last slice. Almost immediately after, he finished the apple, he fell asleep, body all but falling limply on to Roman.
Roman moved quickly to catch him and lower him to the soft grass, but the Other had other ideas. He clutched tightly onto Roman's tunic, practically attempting to bury himself in his chest.
Sighing, Roman, resigned himself to being a pillow for the second time. He groaned internally remembering how difficult it was to escape the Shadow's imposible grip.
Seeing as he couldn't really do anything about it, Roman rested against the tree. Taking one of the nearby apples, from the small pile he had brought, he reconjured the knife and cut it into slices before eating it.
----
An hour later, if the direction of the sun said anything, the Shadow's stomach growled and he stirred with a pitiful whine.
Roman simply shushed him, cut up another apple and fed it to him, a bit tricky at first to manage considering his Shadow was laying on his chest. But once he got it, an easy rhythm was formed.
----
After the fourth apple, somewhere in the mid afternoon, Virgil stirs properly.
He still feels tired but now he can move his body and actually think without his surroundings spinning or his stomach threatening to eviscerate him.
He sits up with a yawn, stretching and rubbing his eyes
"Ah, I see you're feeling better!"
The Reaper jumped slightly, only just registering the Lightbeam beside him.
He nods, not trusting his voice at the moment.
His Lightbeam smiles, bright and happy, "that's good! I was a bit worried, um...do you want the last apple?" The Other offers the red skinned fruit whole and for some inane reason Virgil frowns.
The Lightbean jolts, "I-I can slice it up for you, no problem, here!"
Quick as a whip he pulled a knife from midair and cut the apple into slices. The knife dissapears and he holds the slices out to Virgil, but unlike the previous times, he gentle deposits them in the Reaper's palm.
Virgil thanks the Lightbeam, commenting on how impressive his apple slicing speed was.
"Well, I had four other apples to practice with", he chuckles.
Virgil blushed all the way to the tips of his ears, only now truly recalling that the other practically hand fed him like a child.
Thankfully, the Deer chose that moment to reappear, from wherever it had gone, and it settled itself right onto Virgil's lap. Absolutely content with laying there.
The Reaper couldn;t help but chuckle, gently he pet the clingy creature until it fell asleep and even then.
-----
The sky looked absolutely beautiful, hues of pinks, purples and oranges, decorated the sky.
The two polar opposite beings sat beside one another under the tree, both in peaceful silence simply looking up at the sky.
All too quickly the light petered out, leaving nothing but inky darkness and the glow of millions and millions of stars.
"They're beautiful aren't they?" The Lightbeam breaks the silence first but his companion doesn't seem to be bothered at all.
"Yeah", whispers the Shadow, " I used to talk about the constellations with a friend of mine, but...I forgot them, I can't tell which star is which anymore"
The Lightbeam frowned, his Shadow sounded so sad, well that wasn't going to cut it, his new friend deserved to smile! "I still remember them, maybe I can teach you the stars again so that when you see your friend, you know exactly which constellation they were talking about!"
The Shadows eyes widened, "really? You'd teach me them?"
"Sure!" With that the Lightbeam was pointing up at the sky. "See, look over there, if you connect that star on the right and on the left then straight down, what does it look like?"
"Um", the Shadow tried to follow but he was a bit confused at what he was looking at, "is...is it a tail? And the two at the top arms?"
"Yep! That's Scorpio, the scorpion. Pretty easy name right?"
The Shadow smiled, small but true and the Lightbeam felt his heart soar.
"Hey, what's that one over there?"
The Lightbeam followed the Shadow's hand and then broke into a wide grin. "That's Orion's belt! Did you know there are stories about constellations like this one? Tales of heroes so amazing that their image is placed in the stars for all to see!?"
"I didn't know that, which constellations have stories?"
"There's a lot of them, but I can tell you all the ones I know. See that one over there? That's Artemis...:"
-----
The Lightbeam carried on with his tales, telling of the constellations and the Gods that had put them up in the sky.
He had carried so invested, that he almost missed the Shadow drifting off on his shoulder.
"...hey..", yawned his Shadow, "do you know about the bear?...I...I know there's a bear...", he mumbled, sinking further and further onto the Ligthtbeam. He rubbed his eyes but they kept closing, " ... I don't know anything about it...but there's a bear.."
The Lightbeam smiled, the other truly looked adorable, even more so with the Deer curled up on him. "There's two bears", he said, "Ursa major and Ursa minor. The Big bear and the little bear..."
The Shadow had fallen asleep before he could finish the tale, maybe he could tell it again tomorrow? This the Lightbeam didn't know. But what he did know is that the Shadow was sleeping peacefully with a rather serene smile on his face.
The Lightbeam couldn't help but smile as well.
The stars watched over them as three very different beings slept under the blessed tree.
