Backstory
Kaede is born the youngest daughter in the Momiji Family. She may live in a poor household, but she is beloved by her family who are very caring and loving, though she's currently living with both her parents.

Her mother, Tamiko, works at a local bakery in their hometown since she was known for making her best apple pies. From where she grew up, Tamiko had a lot of apple trees that she would harvest for fresh apples during autumn season, which had easily became a family tradition.

Her father, Hayate, was known for being a doctor for compounding medicine for the sick and injured. He may have some struggles in some aspects of creating medicines, but he hasn't lost faith and never gave up on himself. His bright smile and carefree spirit was the only reason why everyone in town had relied on him.

However, with the relationship between Kaede and her older sister, it was rather complicated. Hinagiku has been mostly far away from home for three years due to her being a strong demon slayer. She'd hardly visited the family since she has been working every day with protecting other people from demons, though she's more than generous enough with having her crow send letters to both Hayate and Tamiko to let them know that she was safe.

Kaede also has a best friend named Ichika. They did everything growing up together. Kaede taught her how to make Tamiko's apple pies every autumn season while Ichika showed her how to do arts and crafts, like origami for example. She didn't want to admit it, but Kaede saw her only best friend as a best sister figure. However, her road of happiness has been shattered during one winter night.

Rumor has it that a demon lurked in the hometown where Kaede lived and many local children and animals from the farmlands have been missing. While Hayate and Tamiko were fast asleep, Kaede slipped on her apricot orange cloak and snuck out of her house to meet up with Ichika at the maple forest. By the time she got there, Kaede only froze in fear when she found a horrifying demon, devouring her.

Not having any time to react, Kaede soon found herself pinned down by the demon and cried out for someone to help, but the foul creature was too strong for her to hold back. Before she can even meet her demise, another stranger was quick enough to kick off the monster and easily decapitate its head with no effort. While the demon was disintegrating, Kaede rushed towards Ichika and tried desperately to pick her up so she can take her back to town for help, but her only best friend was already gone.

Kaede sobbed and mourned for her lost friend, but when she looked over the savior who saved her life, her eyes widened in shock when she saw Hinagiku had arrived. After a brief reunion, Hinagiku was kind enough to bury Ichika's body in front of a large maple tree, which was the only spot where she and Kaede would always spent time together almost every day.

A few months later, Kaede was then taken into Hinagiku's mentorship where she began looking on improving with her body movements. Hayate and Tamiko would stand by and watch, but they couldn't help but worry for the younger girl when they noticed she no longer had a bright smile. Kaede has been training nonstop since the death of her best friend had unexpectedly set her heart ablaze, which made her more focused.

After completing training, Hinagiku gave Kaede a new orange flower pin for her cloak as a good luck charm before the young girl was sent off to Final Selection while their parents waving and shouting their goodbyes. During the seven-day nights, Kaede was having major struggles with fighting a lot of demons, but with the strong concentration, she was able to use at least one form of the breathing style that was personally created by Hinagiku; Autumn Breathing.

After passing Final Selection, Kaede became the new demon slayer and had to leave her home since Hinagiku had named the young girl as her new Tsuguko. After sharing a bittersweet farewell with their parents, Kaede took hold of her sister's hand and walked off to another place, which is now the Autumn Estate near the Demon Slayer headquarters. Ever since, Kaede and Hinagiku worked together as a team to protect other humans from enduring a traumatic fate, as well as catching up on what has happened in their lives since they haven't interacted much.
