Kioshi is described as a very shy, quiet, and observant young girl. She doesn't easily bring herself into speaking with strangers unless it comes to trust. Following orders is what keeps her from getting caught up with expressing her emotions so she won't be criticized. Around friends, Kioshi tends to be soft-spoken and tries to learn how to express herself. Whenever she helps with the butterfly girls, Kioshi is more than willing to listen and do her best with getting a task done, but secretly fears of being criticized by making one mistake, though she hides it very easily behind her blank smile.

Shadow Breathing is derived from Mist Breathing, mimicking mostly shadows that help improve the user's agility and steady movements. It also enhances one's hearing, albeit at the possibility cost of their ears. It was originally created by Kioshi when she failed to use Mist Breathing alongside her late friend.

The user leaps highly and changing their grip on the sword before diving down and stabbing their sword into the ground, unleashing misty black clouds that is used for defense.

Dark clouds of shadows expands over the large area as drastic changes occur to the rhythm of the user's movements, temporarily leaving the target confused and vulnerable to detect. When the clouds disappear, the user appears behind their opponent, having already moved and unleashed a delayed-barrage of sharp shadow sword slashes that completely lacerates them before summoning multiple towering tidal waves and causing them to slam downwards on their enemy with tremendous force. However, the biggest downfalls of this form will cause the user to be unable to keep their breathing steady and will permanently go deaf in one ear.

Backstory
Kioshi was born the youngest daughter of the Tokoyami Family. She lived in a very wealthy neighborhood, but everyone thought she was raised by a caring family. Truth to be told, they thought wrong. She lived through harsh criticism and expectations of her harsh father, Isekai. His side of the family were powerful yet kind demon slayers for two generations, but as soon that legacy was passed down to Isekai, it was nothing but divided hatred and resentments.

Kioshi was forced to go through every training sessions every day without food and water that her arms were beginning to be littered with small scars and bruises from how much she'd failed in completing them all at once. However, Isekai wasn't just the only person who she'd hated throughout her childhood. She had an older sister named Asami. She may have looked sweet and friendly in public, but behind closed doors, she was more violent and dangerous.

Asami was more beautiful, graceful, and perfect in every training sessions that Isekai gives her. In fact, she was completely flawless in almost everything that many men in their hometown wanted to ask for her hand in marriage. Kioshi was the complete opposite. She was just an ordinary girl who can't seem to get the same love and respect Asami earned. Whenever they were alone, Asami would demand her to clean up the house, cook dinner for the family, and bottle up her emotions so nobody would notice.

However, with her mother, Kioshi was more than free to be herself. Her name was Soraya, who was both a doctor and skilled scientist. Whenever they would visit the cherry blossom forest, she would always allow Kioshi to rest her head on her lap to sleep while they would stargaze. Soraya was the only person who Kioshi considered as someone who's always there for her, but their bond never lasted long. She ended up passing away from an unknown illness that completely broke Kioshi, but she held back her feelings as she remembered what Asami told her.

Kioshi also had a best friend named Kido. He was the only one who understood her problems. They would often sneak out of their houses and meet up at the wisteria forest so they can eat tricolored dango as a late night snack while pointing out constellations together. During the day whenever she wasn't busy, Kioshi would sneak into Kido's house so he can teach her how to use Mist Breathing since they made a promise to become demon slayers in the future.

However, Kioshi's life changed even more dramatically during one autumn season. She was standing behind Asami when Isekai was telling her about the marriage he arranged for the older sister, which she found intriguing, but Kioshi only found it stupid because of her cruel and selfish personality. Unknowingly to the Tokoyami Family, there has been demons lurking around their hometown that many children went missing every midnight. Thanks to her keen ears catching the sound of footsteps, Kioshi immediately knew that something was wrong.

Before she can say anything, a demon suddenly crashed into their house and immediately slit Isekai's throat, letting him bleed out to death before beginning to devour him. Asami glared over at her younger sister before she took off running, abandoning the young girl who desperately cried out for her to come back, despite the burden and hatred. When the demon soon noticed Kioshi alone, it started to crawl closer as it reached out its claws, but before the creature can make a move, another stranger was quick enough to decapitate its head.

Kioshi watched in shock, desperately trying to catch her breath from the sudden panic attack. The stranger soon noticed her panicked state, having a sympathetic expression before calmly walking up to her and pulling the girl in a comforting embrace, catching her completely off guard before returning the hug with a complete blank expression. The stranger then introduced herself as the Flower Hashira, Kanae Kocho.

When Kanae asked for her name, Kioshi only stood incredibly silent as she stared up at the woman with emotionless eyes. After a single silent treatment, Kanae then decided to take her back to the Butterfly Mansion where she got checked up to see if she was injured or not, along with meeting her youngest sister, Shinobu. After learning to befriend the Kocho sisters, Kioshi was then taken into Kanae's mentorship where she began to grow extremely frightened from the fear of being criticized, but seeing how gentle and understanding the Flower Hashira was, the young girl felt the unfamiliar rush of comfort.

During Final Selection, Kioshi felt the rush of happiness when she was briefly reunited with Kido, but their friendship ended quickly when he'd saved her from a demon attack and told her to run as fast as she can before he ended up getting killed. Witnessing her friend's unexpected death, Kioshi created a new breathing style out of rage and began fighting her way to survival, which she named it Shadow Breathing.

Fast forward to where she'd pass Final Selection, where Kioshi silently mourned for Kido while holding his midnight blue colored haori close to her chest and began wearing it to honor him. Eventually, Kanae and Shinobu introduced her their adopted sister named Kanao, which resulted them getting along easily due to the both of them having a liking for butterflies.

However, Kioshi felt dread when the crows announced that Kanae has been brutally killed by an Upper Moon demon, resulting Shinobu being the new headmaster of the Butterfly Mansion. Ever since, Kioshi trained to improve her abilities by learning more about Shadow Breathing that she'd created for herself back in Final Selection, as long as she learns to forget about all traumas of her horrible past.
