Backstory
Mayume is the only child who lived in a loving and caring family. Her mother, Akiume, was the most strongest and kindest woman who was a demon slayer that she was close to becoming a Hashira. However, she couldn't earn the position since she'd unfortunately caught an illness that made her incredibly sick, so she had to retire. Her father, Suzume, was full of wisdom and compassion that he'd taught Mayume the good values of life and how it was extremely important to always stay positive for herself and others.

Other kids her age thought she was a weirdo about positivity during her childhood days, but Mayume always believed that everyone should look on the bright side and not have a reason to feel like they don't love themselves. During most childhood years, Mayume would always visit the flower garden and interact with butterflies.

However, ever since Akiume retired from the corps, demons has been lurking around the small town Mayume and her parents were currently living in, and people have went missing because those rumors were true. One spring night, Suzume was trying desperately to make a special medicine for Akiume while Mayume was watching, holding her sick mother's hand as her own way to comfort her. They weren't aware that a demon was watching them, so that foul creature broke into their house and brutally killed both adults, leaving the young girl all alone and in a sobbing mess from the intruder.

Before Mayume could even meet her own fate, a stranger was quick enough to easily kill the demon before introducing herself as the Flower Hashira, Kanae Kocho. The woman asked Mayume if she was alright, but the young girl couldn't answer due to her crying. Without any hesitation, Kanae had to take her back to the Butterfly Mansion, where Mayume was given a chance to be part of the Kocho Sisters. Shinobu didn't grew fond of the small child, but after Kanae explained to her about what happened to Mayume's family, Shinobu eventually warmed up to her from time to time.

While being trained by Kanae, Mayume couldn't help but doubt that fighting wasn't always the answer to the war against demons. She'd even remembered the good values that Suzume had taught her when he was still alive, so her main goal was now to help others. Mayume didn't have the potential when she began learning about Flower Breathing, but when Shinobu tried teaching her Insect Breathing, the young girl didn't have the skills either.

A few months later, the Kasugai Crows announced that Kanae got killed by an Upper Moon Demon, which affectively shattered Mayume's life that it reminded her of witnessing both her parents's deaths at the young age. During Final Selection with Kanao, Mayume was having major trouble with fighting against a demon, despite her lack of strength and experience with both Flower Breathing and Insect Breathing. Until, a random person quickly came by and fought it off while telling her to run, which she quickly obeyed and ran off. However, after some time of running and surviving the trial, she'd eventually found his dead body, resulting from sacrificing himself to protect her.

She may have passed Final Selection alongside Kanao, but Mayume felt like she doesnt deserve to fight because she thinks whenever she tries, another person will have to die for her. Without any reason to give Shinobu why she refuses, Mayume gave up her goal of fighting against the demons and chose to help her out in the Butterfly Mansion.

During her years in the Butterfly Mansion, Mayume focused on creating poison for Shinobu and some others in order to kill the demons while she learned to make medicine for the sick and injured slayers. She thought that it gave her a better purpose with helping others instead of violence. A few weeks later after meeting Aoi Kanzaki, she thought that the other girl was a bit intimidating because of her personality that was incredibly similar to Shinobu when she was younger, but after knowing her more, they became quick friends. However, after meeting the three younger triplets, she thought of them as her own little sisters with the same positivity.

However, when the final battle had arrived, Mayume refused to let Shinobu go because she overheard her sister's conversation with Kanao about how they must kill the one demon who slaughtered Kanae, but Shinobu only smiled and told her to stay positive. Mayume prayed for everyone's health and safety alongside Aoi and the triplets, but after the crows announced Shinobu's death, the young girl grew devastated and started sobbing, her heart aching with so much grief that she lost another person who was important to her and everyone else. Once the final battle was over, Mayume continued helping others, never extinguishing the smile that she had for years that her family loved to see.
