1: Hide the Knives
Omniscent
"She's coming! Hide all sharp objects!"
Mateo was confused as to why a man had just run in to the room screaming his head off. He was also confused as to why everyone around him was scurrying in a panic. People started stashing pencils, scissors, anything with a point into drawers. Heels could be heard clicking down a hallway getting closer and closer. Not even five seconds later, everyone sat back down and a woman who reeked of authority walked into the room like a model. The room suddenly dropped 10 degrees.
Gucci sunglasses that hid her snake eyes. A rich perfume called, "I Eat Fear for Breakfast." Hair in a bun that meant no bullshit. Heels that demanded attention. And worst of all, red matte lipstick that said, "I love the taste of human blood." Her name. Emilia Jade.
No one dared to look her in the eyes. She stopped in her tracks and look down at her left. The woman she was staring at didn't even look up. Emilia brushed the woman's hair out of her face so she could get a better look at her features.
"You're quite pretty," she said barely above a whisper.
"Thank you, Miss Jade," the small woman responded quietly. She still didn't dare look in Emilia's eyes.
Emilia moved her fingers from the woman's hair and placed her hand on the desk. "What's your name?"
"Lily."
"Okay, Lily. Has anyone ever bullied you?"
Lily looked up at the intimidating woman above her, careful not to meet her eyes. She wanted to answer correctly, but she didn't know how. "Umm..."
"It's a simple yes or no question," Emilia was getting impatient.
"Yes."
"Do you want to know why?" Lily didn't respond. Emilia leaned down to Lily's ear so no one else could hear what was said. "You reek of insecurity," she whispered. "How are you supposed to represent a brand all about confidence when you can't even fake it?" The passive aggressiveness in her tone was evident.
Emilia looked into Lily's eyes which didn't meet her own. She slid her glasses down the bridge of her nose and tilted Lily's chine to stare into her brown orbs. "It's unfortunate. No one will see your beauty if you won't show it off. Fix it or your fired."
She adjusted her glasses back to their original resting place and walked towards her office. Lily let out a breath she didn't know she was holding in.
Right before Emilia opened her private office door, she turned around to look at the room full of people who feared her every move. Whistling to get the rooms attention, she commanded, "Stop hiding sharp objects like I'm a serial killer. Don't cross me and you won't be murdered." Flashing a cold smile, she turned back around and walked into her office, slamming the door behind her.
The whole room returned to its normal, bustling state without Emilia Jade in its presence. Mateo looked at the closed door of his new boss's office. He had heard the rumors of Emilia being a crazy boss. But, if this was what they meant, the tabloids were exaggerating.
There was a tap on Mateo's shoulder. He turned around to see the woman who employed him smiling back at him. "Hi, Mateo."
"Julie, right?" He flashed an award-winning smile. Julie, Emilia's agent, swooned, but tried to contain herself in the workplace.
"Yes," she giggled. "Umm- that woman who just walked behind that door," she pointed across the filled room, "that was Emilia Jade. She's the woman you'll be working for."
"I assumed so," Mateo responded.
Julia brought her voice down to a whisper. "I should warn you, she has quite the temper."
"So, I've heard," he chuckled. Julie found it attractive, but she was too shy to ever admit that out loud.
"Her last couple of PAs only lasted a week, at most. Based on your resume and interview, you seem to have thick skin."
"I've been told that I'm a quick learner and a pretty likeable guy. I also have a lot of patience so, I don't think I'll want to quit anytime soon."
"Oh, no. The other ones got fired." Mateo mouthed an "oh". "Hopefully you'll last a bit longer." The frail young woman really hoped that he would last longer. It wouldn't hurt to have a bit of eye candy around. "In a month, Miss Jade has the opening of a new office in Paris. You'll need to go with her and set up her schedule and hotel room. Make sure they remove anything sharp or made of glass in advance. This weekend she has to go to the Stephen's Annual Winter Gala. She's dreading it, which means she's going to get bored. When she's bored, she gets... interesting." Mateo nodded as he tried to retain all this information so he could write it down later. "I'll email you all of this information later. Now, I'll show you your desk."
She led Mateo behind the door Emilia had previously walked through. Behind it was a private elevator. They used it to reach the top floor. After exiting the hallway, they strolled down a straight hallway. At the end of it was a pair of double doors.
Julie pointed at the door on the right side of the wall. "That will be your office." She extended her index finger and the double doors in front of them, "This is Miss Jade's office. I'll introduce you to her before leaving you here." Mateo nodded in response.
Julie knocked on the doors, but nothing could be heard. She decided to just go in. The pair took in the strange sight as Emilia toyed with a needle. She pricked her finger with it and smirked as blood drew out. Julie cleared her throat causing Emilia to slowly look up at the two standing in front of her. She looked back down at her now red stained finger and pressed it to the blank document in front of her.
"Umm- Miss Jade..."
"I told you to stop saying, 'umm'. It's annoying." Emilia didn't bother looking back up. She was too fascinated with the way the thick, maroon liquid spread on her paper like a wildfire.
"Right. Miss Jade, this is your new personal assistant, Mateo."
She took a brief glance at the man who stood before her. Her features remained expressionless. She didn't need to examine him much to know he was pretty, and she wanted him sexually. Mateo, on the other hand, was confused. He didn't know if the glance was a good or bad thing. He decided to walk up to her and hold out his hand for her to shake.
"I don't shake hands with people I just met." Lie. "I don't know where your fingers have been." I want them in my mouth. Emilia rested her elbows on her desk and leaned forward. She slid her glasses off her face and looked the tan figure in his glossy, dark brown eyes.
Mateo retracted his hand back and stared at the interesting woman. He examined all of her features. Her long, dark brown hair with golden highlights. Her plump lips formed in a straight line. Her light brown eyes that perfectly complimented her fair skin tone. Her Asian heritage was clear in her facial attributes. Her beauty was clear in her... everything.
Both parties felt like they'd been staring at each other for hours. But the 22 seconds they had been staring at each other, was enough to make Julie uncomfortable.
"Um- I think I'm gonna go now." Mateo finally broke eye contact with his new boss and turned to face Julie. "Mateo, if you need anything, I'm one floor below. My name tag is next to my office. Or you can call me. My number is on your desk." A shy smile appeared on her face.
"You're dismissed, Julie" Emilia chimed. Julie faced her, blushed, and swiftly moved out of the room closing the door behind her. "I wanted a caramel iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts and spicy chicken sandwich from Chick-Fil-A."
"Uh-"
"You have fifteen minutes starting-," she looked at her rose gold, Michael Kors watch, "now."
"Yes ma'am." Matteo swiftly rushed out of the room.
Emilia couldn't help but think about how she wanted to be under him. No. She wanted him to be hers.
The first chapter!!! Yay! That's it.
