Emotional Trauma for John
Mary and John got into their car and drove to the hospital. Alex and Sherlock had wanted to come with so they were riding in the back. Mary was shrieking in pain. John was driving with one hand and holding Mary's hand with the other. He looked pale.
"John, you okay?" Alex asked.
"Yeah, yeah." John nodded.
"How do you think I'm doing?!" Mary snapped. "Sorry, Alex, I'm just in pain!"
"It's okay." Alex said.
"Animals get through it with no problem so why can't women?" Sherlock tilted his head.
"Shut up, Sherlock!" Mary yelled.
"Which hospital are we going to?" Alex asked.
"Anything that's close." John said.
"You haven't found a hospital?" Mary snapped.
"Give me minute." Alex said, typing into her GPS. "Okay, turn left here!"
"No, I'm gonna turn right, the hospital we've been going to is this way." John said.
"John, turn left, the closest hospital is this way!" Alex said.
John ignored Alex's instructions and turned right. He was going as fast as he possibly could, and it was frightening to Alex. She was clinging to Sherlock for dear life. They were all still in their wedding clothes.
"John, slow down!" Mary said. "You're going to kill all of us!"
"You're in labor, I will go as fast as I want!" John said. "Mary, just breathe. It's going to be fine."
John pulled into the hospital parking lot. He explained the situation when they got inside and Mary was taken into the maternity ward. John went into the room with Mary. The doctor wouldn't let Alex and Sherlock in since neither of them had any immediete relation to Mary. Alex and Sherlock sat outside the room. They could hear Mary screaming in pain.
"I don't know what to do." Alex said.
"Nothing. We don't do anything." Sherlock said.
"We are the pirates who don't do anything!" Alex said in a sing song voice. Sherlock gave her a confused look. "It's a reference."
"You're a weirdo." Sherlock said.
"But I'm your weirdo. FOREVEEER." Alex said, holding up her ring. Sherlock laughed and ruffled her hair. The happy moment was cut short when Mary let out another angonizing scream. "I wish I could help some way."
Meanwhile, John was pacing by Mary's bedside. He didn't know what to do either. Mary was panting and screaming. She was pushing as hard as she could. John stopped pacing and held her hand. Mary was taking a short break.
"Come on, love, you're doing so well!" John said. "Push!"
"I am pushing!" Mary snapped. "This is all your fault!"
"I know, I know!" John said. "I'm sorry!"
"It's okay!" Mary groaned. Blood was pouring out of her.
"Mary, that is way too much blood." John said.
"I'm fine, John." Mary said.
"No, I'm a doctor." John said. "I know for a fact that that's way too much blood."
Mary glared at her husband. She squeezed her eyes shut and pushed one more time. There was a cry and John nearly passed out in relief. Mary had given birth. He took her hand. She smiled weakly at him.
"Darling, you were brilliant." He said.
"Thanks." Mary said.
"Oh, God, the cord is wrapped around her neck!" The other doctor said. "The freaking cord is wrapped around her neck, she's blue!"
"Wait-" John said. He was cut short as the doctor whisked their daughter out of the room to take care of her. (THIS FREAKING HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I WAS BORN I'M NOT KIDDING I COULD HAVE DIED AND THIS STORY WOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED)
Mary was still bleeding. She hadn't stopped. John, once again, didn't know what to do. The nurses tried to stop the bleeding, but it didn't work. Mary looked to John. She knew this could be it.
"John, I love you." She said.
"Mary, no, no, no!" John said. "Stay with me! Please...I can't lose you."
Mary opened her mouth and then passed out. John started freaking out. The nurses kicked him out of the room. Mary was just unconcious, not dead, so there was still a chance she would live. Alex and Sherlock looked up. John was panting.
"John, what is it?" Alex asked.
"The cord was around the baby's neck and she's blue and Mary passed out and I think she's dying and she wouldn't stop bleeding!" John was speaking as fast as he possibly could. Alex walked up to him, took him by the shoulders, and shook him. (So my foot's totally stuck in there right, I'm freaking out, the dog's having a seizure, and I still got half a pie left.)
"John, get a grip. Now, tell me slower. What happened?" Alex asked.
"Mary gave birth and the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. They took the baby away to get the cord off and then Mary couldn't stop bleeding. She passed out and the nurses kicked me out because she could be dying." John explained. He broke down. "I don't know what to do, Alex! I'm scared!"
"John, calm down." Sherlock said. "Look on the bright side. Twenty percent of cases like this end happily, with both the mother and the child alive and well."
"Sherlock, timing!" Alex said. It was too late.
"Twenty percent? Twenty percent?! Sherlock, shut up! This is not funny, not this time!" John said. "This isn't funny at all, so just shut up!"
"John, shh." Alex said. "You know what we're going to do? I'm going to go check up on the baby, and you're going to stay here with Mary. She needs you. Go in there, tell them you're a doctor, and stay by her side until the end."
"Okay." John nodded.
"Any details about the baby you remember?" Alex asked.
"No." John shook his head.
"I'll still find her." Alex said. "Sherlock, come with me."
They went to go find where the newborn babies were. They looked around the outside of the room since you weren't allowed to go in unless you were the parents. Alex had noticed that they played music when a baby was born and music hadn't been played since Mary had given birth. Alex knew that they were looking for the newest looking baby. She looked around and saw what looked like the newest child. She breathed a sigh of relief. She hoped that this was her brother's kid. She looked up at a worked.
"Excuse me, is this Mary and John Watson's baby?" She asked. "I'm John's sister."
"I believe this is their child, yes." The worker nodded.
"Thank you." Alex said. She turned to the glass and smiled. "Hello, little one. I'm your aunt. I know that your parents should be the first ones to meet you, but I'm all you've got right now. This is your uncle. His name is Sherlock. I'm Alex. You look so much like John..."
"She's so small." Sherlock said. Alex ignored him. She put her hand to the glass.
"I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying here until your daddy or mommy comes." Alex said.
They stayed for what seemed like hours. John was at Mary's side, waiting for her to wake up. It looked like she was going to be okay, but you never know. John was holding her hand. Mary had lost so much blood.
"Please, stay." He whispered.
Alex texted John. She wanted to tell him his kid was okay. John got the text and breathed a sigh of relief. He smiled down at Mary.
"Alex says that the baby is okay. Now I just need you to be okay." He said. "Come on, Mary, please live. The baby needs you. I need you." Mary still didn't wake up. John took a deep breath. "Mary, without you, the sun will have no warmth. The flowers, no beauty. Your love is the rain that falls upon my earth." John broke down again.
"Don't stop now. It's just getting good!" A very familiar voice said. John's head snapped up. Mary had woken up. She was smiling at him. John playfully hit her, but not too hard.
"You are terrible!" He said. "You scared me!"
"That was beautiful. Much more meaningful than your vows." Mary said. "I should fake my death more often."
"That already happened to me once with someone I care about and it sucked." John said.
"What did you say about the baby? I could sort of hear you, but I couldn't really wake up enough to hear it." Mary said.
"Alex said she's fine. She and Sherlock are with her right now." John said.
"Go tell them I'm okay." Mary said. "Then have them bring the baby in!"
"I'll see what I can do." John said, winking at her. Mary laughed.
Alex and Sherlock were still with the baby. Sherlock was getting bored. He was shifting a lot. Alex was getting worried. They hadn't heard anything from John. As if on cue, John half-jogged up to them. Alex stood up.
"That's her. That's your daughter." She said, pointing.
"Oh, she's beautiul..." John breathed. "Hello, sweetheart."
"Is Mary okay?" Alex asked.
"Yeah, Mary's fine." John nodded. "This has been the worst, yet best night of my life. I almost lost my wife and my child, but they both pulled through."
"And I got married to the best man I know." Alex said, kissing Sherlock on the cheek.
"Alex, I'm your brother, so that's just wrong. And I'm already married." John said.
"You are so conceited." Alex said. All three of them started laughing.
John requested that the baby was brought to Mary's room. Alex and Sherlock went into Mary's room. Alex was relieved to see that she really was okay. When the baby was brought in, Alex and Sherlock left to give Mary and John a moment to just be a family. After about thirty minutes, John told them that they could come back in.
"Have you decided on a name?" Alex asked.
"Yes." Mary said. She was smiling.
"What is it?" Alex asked.
"Alexandra Sherlock Watson." John said proudly. "Mary chose Alexandra and I chose Sherlock. Sherlock, you did say it was a girl's name, right? Sherlock? Oh no, Alex, not you too!"
Sherlock had stopped moving completely. It was just like when John had told him that he was his best friend. Alex had frozen too. She felt honored. John clapped his hands in her face. She blinked and shook her head.
"You named your kid after me?" Alex asked.
"Yes!" Mary said, grinning broadly.
"Wow...I didn't know I was so important." Alex said.
"Of course you are." John said. "Sherlock! Snap out of it!"
"I...You named your child after me?" Sherlock asked, still not understanding.
"Yeah." John nodded.
"Thank you..." Sherlock's voice trailed off.
"We were also going to ask you to be the godparents." John said.
Sherlock fainted.
"Sherlock, wake up." Alex said a few minutes later, trying to shake her husband awake. Sherlock came too and sat up.
"You want us to be the godparents?" He asked.
"Yeah. We don't trust anyone else nearly as much." Mary said.
"I...uh...well, thank you, I guess." Sherlock said awkwardly
"You don't have to stay." Mary said. "It's your wedding night, go home, have fun!"
"We'll check in on you tomorrow." Alex said.
"Okay." John said. "Bye."
"Bye." Alex said.
They left the hospital and hailed a cab. They went home. Alex changed out of her dress and Sherlock out of his tuxido. Alex came out of the bathroom after washing the makeup off her face. She turned to Sherlock and sighed tiredly.
"Well, Mr. Holmes, we've had a very trying night." She said.
"Yes, we have, Mrs. Holmes." Sherlock said. "I don't think I want kids anymore."
"Why not?" Alex tilted her head.
"I don't want to lose you." Sherlock said.
"Oh, Sherlock." Alex said. "That kind of thing doesn't happen very often. I think I would be fine."
"I am so tired." Sherlock yawned.
"Me too." Alex said. "Let's get to bed."
"Goodnight, Alex Holmes. I love you." Sherlock said.
"I love you too, Sherlock." Alex said, smiling at her new last name.
Alex and Sherlock fell into a deep sleep. Sherlock had a tight grip on Alex, not wanting anything to happen to her. He knew now that Moriarty, if he was truly back, would be after Alex more than ever since he would probably hear about their marriage. Moriarty would probably try to kidnap her and Sherlock was not going to let that happen. He had told Moriarty when they'd first met that he didn't have a heart, but it was now obvious that he did have one. And Alex had given it to him.
