Chapter VIII
The next few days were absolutely miserable. You don't know how Dagur chased off Vigo's men. Perhaps they decided you simply weren't worth it. Once Dagur was sure they had left, he turned his full attention to you. Making sure you ate and drank and slept. Sometimes he would mix a bunch of different leaves together and try applying them to you wound, but you hardly noticed a difference. After nearly a week, you managed to shift into your fully human form, but Dagur still refused to let you do anything for yourself.
Stuck in caves again.
It felt like the horrible cycle of your life: caves and cages. 'You can't leave.' 'It's too dangerous.' 'You're too important.' It's not like you're important to anyone while you were stranded. He could at least let you sit in the sunlight.
Days began to pass. The leaves took on a soft golden color, then orange. The change was so subtle, you could've sworn that the forest was on fire the day you noticed.
"It's autumn," he commented, "As it gets colder, the trees go into hibernation and they shed their leaves."
"It's like shedding season," you responded, thinking back to the previous spring when the Lycanwings shed their winter scales. Yours will probably grown in soon, but you'll still need a much better shelter than this cave.
"Uh... yeah. Sure."
"How cold does it get here?"
"Well," he thought about it for a moment, "We're much farther north than what you're used to. There'll probably be some deep snow."
Exactly what you were worried about.
"We'll need better shelter," you stated, "Lycanwings are cold blooded."
"Meaning...?"
"I'll freeze to death way before you will."
Perhaps you didn't mean for that to be such a shock, but Dagur was shocked that you stated it so nonchalantly.
"Haha, very funny," he was hoping it was just a joke.
"No I'm serious. I won't be able to stand anything much colder than this."
He looked you over. How had he not noticed your shivering? Why hadn't you said anything?
"Well why didn't you say something sooner?! I could've been working on something!"
You jumped at his outburst, causing him to stop.
"Sorry. I just... I want to get you home in one piece. To make it up to you for the... you know... kidnapping thing."
You smiled at him, "Thanks."
He felt soft inside.
That afternoon you formulated a plan. Over the next few days Dagur would gather supplies and you would prep and pack. When you had a reasonable amount, the two of you would leave your cave and seek better shelter. Building anything was basically out of the question. There wasn't a enough tools and strength between the two of you to build much of anything, and it would make you easy to find.
You needed to be near free flowing freshwater that wouldn't freeze on you. You needed to be secluded so if Vigo showed up, you wouldn't be just out in the open. Inland was definitely preferable. A good source of firewood would be nice too.
"I'm going to go look around for a good place," Dagur began walking away. You quickly moved between him and the door.
"You mean we're going to look around."
"No," he gently pushed you to the side, "You're better, but you're still not getting far on that leg."
"My leg is fine!" That was a lie. It was already aching from merely standing. Still, you felt like you would lose your mind if you stayed in here too much longer.
It must show, because Dagur gave you a look.
"I'll be back before sundown. Hopefully we can head out tomorrow." With that he left.
Boredom quickly took over. There was nothing to do. Everything was packed into two baskets you had weaved a few days before. Or was it weeks? How long as it been again? You rack your brain for any indication of how long it's been. At least a month. But the apex hasn't occurred again. But it must have. Maybe when you were sick. Yes that must be it. You were took sick to remember or hurt Dagur. Obviously.
You returned to being bored. At least back home you had someone to talk to. And plenty of food. Your island was near a reef filled with fish. It was much warmer, so you managed to grow human foods as well. You hadn't seen a single fruit aside from the occasional berry patch. How do the Vikings live like this?
It must be miserable. You decide to make sure Dagur is served a proper meal when you return to your island.
All this thinking of food was making you hungry. Usually at this time of year, your people have a feast to celebrate the harvest and prepare for the winter. Of course, winter on your island was barely even winter, as it was tropical. But before going into hiding, lychanwings would travel across the world, only to return to the island for special occasions. That was many generations ago, before the Vikings declared war on the dragons. When that happened, the Lychanwings were caught in the middle - human or dragon? Most wanted to side with the dragons, since the Vikings were simply driven by distrust of differences. But others wanted to abandon dragon life all together and simply be human full time, but that did not change the fact that when the apex would occur...
Once again the apex was on your mind. The apex and food.
